Sets computing the symmetric tensor rank

Let n_d denote the degree d Veronese embedding of a projective space P^r. For any symmetric tensor P, the 'symmetric tensor rank' sr(P) is the minimal cardinality of a subset A of P^r, such that n_d(A) spans P. Let S(P) be the space of all subsets A of P^r, such that n_d(A) computes sr(P). Here we classify all P in P^n such that sr(P) < 3d/2 and sr(P) is computed by at least two subsets. For such tensors P, we prove that S(P) has no isolated points.

Embeddings of general curves in projective spaces: the range of the quadrics

Let $C \subset \mathbb {P}^r$ a general embedding of prescribed degree of a general smooth curve with prescribed genus. Here we prove that either $h^0(\mathbb {P}^r,\mathcal {I}_C(2)) =0$ or $h^1(\mathbb {P}^r,\mathcal {I}_C(2)) =0$ (a problem called the Maximal Rank Conjecture in the range of quadrics).

On Buchsbaum bundles on quadric hypersurfaces

Let $E$ be an indecomposable rank two vector bundle on the projective space $\PP^n, n \ge 3$, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. It is well known that $E$ is arithmetically Buchsbaum if and only if $n=3$ and $E$ is a null-correlation bundle. In the present paper we establish an analogous result for rank two indecomposable arithmetically Buchsbaum vector bundles on the smooth quadric hypersurface $Q_n\subset\PP^{n+1}$, $n\ge 3$. We give in fact a full classification and prove that $n$ must be at most 5. As to $k$-Buchsbaum rank two vector bundles on $Q_3$, $k\ge2$, we prove two boundedness results.

Decomposition of homogeneous polynomials with low rank

Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial of degree $d$ in $m+1$ variables defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and suppose that $F$ belongs to the $s$-th secant varieties of the standard Veronese variety $X_{m,d}\subset \mathbb{P}^{{m+d\choose d}-1}$ but that its minimal decomposition as a sum of $d$-th powers of linear forms $M_1, ..., M_r$ is $F=M_1^d+... + M_r^d$ with $r>s$. We show that if $s+r\leq 2d+1$ then such a decomposition of $F$ can be split in two parts: one of them is made by linear forms that can be written using only two variables, the other part is uniquely determined once one has fixed the first part. We also obtain a uniqueness theorem for the minimal decomposition of $F$ if the rank is at most $d$ and a mild condition is satisfied.

Symmetric tensor rank with a tangent vector: a generic uniqueness theorem

Let $X_{m,d}\subset \mathbb {P}^N$, $N:= \binom{m+d}{m}-1$, be the order $d$ Veronese embedding of $\mathbb {P}^m$. Let $τ(X_{m,d})\subset \mathbb {P}^N$, be the tangent developable of $X_{m,d}$. For each integer $t \ge 2$ let $τ(X_{m,d},t)\subseteq \mathbb {P}^N$, be the joint of $τ(X_{m,d})$ and $t-2$ copies of $X_{m,d}$. Here we prove that if $m\ge 2$, $d\ge 7$ and $t \le 1 + \lfloor \binom{m+d-2}{m}/(m+1)\rfloor$, then for a general $P\in τ(X_{m,d},t)$ there are uniquely determined $P_1,...,P_{t-2}\in X_{m,d}$ and a unique tangent vector $ν$ of $X_{m,d}$ such that $P$ is in the linear span of $ν\cup \{P_1,...,P_{t-2}\}$, i.e. a degree $d$ linear form $f$ associated to $P$ may be written as $$f = L_{t-1}^{d-1}L_t + \sum_{i=1}^{t-2} L_i^d$$ with $L_i$, $1 \le i \le t$, uniquely determined (up to a constant) linear forms on $\mathbb {P}^m$.

Postulation of general quintuple fat point schemes in P^3

We study the postulation of a general union Y of double, triple, quartuple and quintuple points of P^3. In characteristic 0, we prove that Y has good postulation in degree $d\ge 11$. The proof is based on the combination of the Horace differential lemma with a computer-assisted proof. We also classify the exceptions in degree 9 and 10.

Higher secant varieties of $\mathbb P^n \times\mathbb P^ 1$ embedded in bi-degree $(a,b)$

In this paper we compute the dimension of all the higher secant varieties to the Segre-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n\times \mathbb{P}^1$ via the section of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}(a,b)$ for any $n,a,b\in \mathbb{Z}^+$. We relate this result to the Grassmann Defectivity of Veronese varieties and we classify all the Grassmann $(1,s-1)$-defective Veronese varieties.

Meromorphic Line Bundles and Holomorphic Gerbes

We show that any complex manifold that has a divisor whose normalization has non-zero first Betti number either has a non-trivial holomorphic gerbe which does not trivialize meromorphicly or a meromorphic line bundle not equivalent to any holomorphic line bundle. Similarly, higher Betti numbers of divisors correspond to higher gerbes or meromorphic gerbes. We give several new examples.

Minimal decomposition of binary forms with respect to tangential projections

Let $C\subset \mathbb{P}^n$ be a rational normal curve and let $\ell_O:\mathbb{P}^{n+1}\dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ be any tangential projection form a point $O\in T_AC$ where $A\in C$. Hence $X:= \ell_O(C)\subset \mathbb{P}^n$ is a linearly normal cuspidal curve with degree $n+1$. For any $P = \ell_O(B)$, $B\in \mathbb{P}^{n+1}$, the $X$-rank $r_X(P)$ of $P$ is the minimal cardinality of a set $S\subset X$ whose linear span contains $P$. Here we describe $r_X(P)$ in terms of the schemes computing the $C$-rank or the border $C$-rank of $B$.

Weakly uniform rank two vector bundles on multiprojective spaces

Here we classify the weakly uniform rank two vector bundles on multiprojective spaces. Moreover we show that every rank $r>2$ weakly uniform vector bundle with splitting type $a_{1,1}=...=a_{r,s}=0$ is trivial and every rank $r>2$ uniform vector bundle with splitting type $a_1>...>a_r$, splits.

On the X-rank with respect to linear projections of projective varieties

In this paper we improve the known bound for the $X$-rank $R_{X}(P)$ of an element $P\in {\mathbb{P}}^N$ in the case in which $X\subset {\mathbb P}^n$ is a projective variety obtained as a linear projection from a general $v$-dimensional subspace $V\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+v}$. Then, if $X\subset {\mathbb P}^n$ is a curve obtained from a projection of a rational normal curve $C\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+1}$ from a point $O\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+1}$, we are able to describe the precise value of the $X$-rank for those points $P\in {\mathbb P}^n$ such that $R_{X}(P)\leq R_{C}(O)-1$ and to improve the general result. Moreover we give a stratification, via the $X$-rank, of the osculating spaces to projective cuspidal projective curves $X$. Finally we give a description and a new bound of the $X$-rank of subspaces both in the general case and with respect to integral non-degenerate projective curves.

Non-vanishing theorems for rank two vector bundles on threefolds

The paper investigates the non-vanishing of $H^1(E(n))$, where $E$ is a (normalized) rank two vector bundle over any smooth irreducible threefold $X$ of degree $d$ such that $Pic(X) \cong \ZZ$. If $ε$ is the integer defined by the equality $ω_X = O_X(ε)$, and $α$ is the least integer $t$ such that $H^0(E(t)) \ne 0$, then, for a non-stable $E$ ($α\le 0$) the first cohomology module does not vanish at least between the endpoints $\frac{ε-c_1}{2}$ and $-α-c_1-1$. The paper also shows that there are other non-vanishing intervals, whose endpoints depend on $α$ and also on the second Chern class $c_2$ of $E$. If $E$ is stable the first cohomology module does not vanish at least between the endpoints $\frac{ε-c_1}{2}$ and $α-2$. The paper considers also the case of a threefold $X$ with $Pic(X) \ne \ZZ$ but $Num(X) \cong \ZZ$ and gives similar non-vanishing results.

Canonical curves with low apolarity

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and let $C$ be a non--hyperelliptic smooth projective curve of genus $g$ defined over $k$. Since the canonical model of $C$ is arithmetically Gorenstein, Macaulay's theory of inverse systems allows to associate to $C$ a cubic form $f$ in the divided power $k$--algebra $R$ in $g-2$ variables. The apolarity of $C$ is the minimal number $t$ of linear form in $R$ needed to write $f$ as sum of their divided power cubes. It is easy to see that the apolarity of $C$ is at least $g-2$ and P. De Poi and F. Zucconi classified curves with apolarity $g-2$ when $k$ is the complex field. In this paper, we give a complete, characteristic free, classification of curves $C$ with apolarity $g-1$ (and $g-2$).
