The dual geometry of Hermitian two-point codes

In this paper we study the algebraic geometry of any two-point code on the Hermitian curve and reveal the purely geometric nature of their dual minimum distance. We describe the minimum-weight codewords of many of their dual codes through an explicit geometric characterization of their supports. In particular, we show that they appear as sets of collinear points in many cases.

On the duals of geometric Goppa codes from norm-trace curves

In this paper we study the dual codes of a wide family of evaluation codes on norm-trace curves. We explicitly find out their minimum distance and give a lower bound for the number of their minimum-weight codewords. A general geometric approach is performed and applied to study in particular the dual codes of one-point and two-point codes arising from norm-trace curves through Goppa's construction, providing in many cases their minimum distance and some bounds on the number of their minimum-weight codewords. The results are obtained by showing that the supports of the minimum-weight codewords of the studied codes obey some precise geometric laws as zero-dimensional subschemes of the projective plane. Finally, the dimension of some classical two-point Goppa codes on norm-trace curves is explicitly computed.

On the minimum distance and the minimum weight of Goppa codes from a quotient of the Hermitian curve

In this paper we study evaluation codes arising from plane quotients of the Hermitian curve, defined by affine equations of the form $y^q+y=x^m$, $q$ being a prime power and $m$ a positive integer which divides $q+1$. The dual minimum distance and minimum weight of such codes are studied from a geometric point of view. In many cases we completely describe the minimum-weight codewords of their dual codes through a geometric characterization of the supports, and provide their number. Finally, we apply our results to describe Goppa codes of classical interest on such curves.

On the geometry of Hermitian one-point codes

In this paper we study the algebraic-geometry of any one-point code on the Hermitian curve. Moreover, we characterize the minimum-weight codewords of some of their dual codes and describe many their small-weight codewords.

On the typical rank of real polynomials (or symmetric tensors) with a fixed border rank

Let $σ_b(X_{m,d}(\mathbb {C}))(\mathbb {R})$, $b(m+1) < \binom{m+d}{m}$, denote the set of all degree $d$ real homogeneous polynomials in $m+1$ variables (i.e. real symmetric tensors of format $(m+1)\times ... \times (m+1)$, $d$ times) which have border rank $b$ over $\mathbb {C}$. It has a partition into manifolds of real dimension $\le b(m+1)-1$ in which the real rank is constant. A typical rank of $σ_b(X_{m,d}(\mathbb {C}))(\mathbb {R})$ is a rank associated to an open part of dimension $b(m+1)-1$. Here we classify all typical ranks when $b\le 7$ and $d, m$ are not too small. For a larger sets of $(m,d,b)$ we prove that $b$ and $b+d-2$ are the two first typical ranks. In the case $m=1$ (real bivariate polynomials) we prove that $d$ (the maximal possible a priori value of the real rank) is a typical rank for every $b$.

Stratification of the fourth secant variety of Veronese variety via the symmetric rank

If $X\subset \mathbb{P}^n$ is a projective non degenerate variety, the $X$-rank of a point $P\in \mathbb{P}^n$ is defined to be the minimum integer $r$ such that $P$ belongs to the span of $r$ points of $X$. We describe the complete stratification of the fourth secant variety of any Veronese variety $X$ via the $X$-rank. This result has an equivalent translation in terms both of symmetric tensors and homogeneous polynomials. It allows to classify all the possible integers $r$ that can occur in the minimal decomposition of either a symmetric tensor or a homogeneous polynomial of $X$-border rank 4 (i.e. contained in the fourth secant variety) as a linear combination of either completely decomposable tensors or powers of linear forms respectively.

Real and complex rank for real symmetric tensors with low ranks

We study the case of a real homogeneous polynomial $P$ whose minimal real and complex decompositions in terms of powers of linear forms are different. We prove that, if the sum of the complex and the real ranks of $P$ is at most $ 3°(P)-1$, then the difference of the two decompositions is completely determined either on a line or on a conic or two disjoint lines.

Reflexive and spanned sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$

We investigate the reflexive sheaves on $\PP^3$ spanned in codimension 2 with very low first Chern class $c_1$. We also give the sufficient and necessary conditions on numeric data of such sheaves for indecomposabiity. As a by-product we obtain that every reflexive sheaf on $\PP^3$ spanned in codimension 2 with $c_1=2$ is spanned.

Tensor ranks on tangent developable of Segre varieties

We describe the stratification by tensor rank of the points belonging to the tangent developable of any Segre variety. We give algorithms to compute the rank and a decomposition of a tensor belonging to the secant variety of lines of any Segre variety. We prove Comon's conjecture on the rank of symmetric tensors for those tensors belonging to tangential varieties to Veronese varieties.

On higher rank globally generated vector bundles over a smooth quadric threefold

We give a complete classification of globally generated vector bundles of rank 3 on a smooth quadric threefold with $c_1\leq 2$ and extend the result to arbitrary higher rank case. We also investigate the existence of globally generated indecomposable vector bundles, and give the sufficient and necessary conditions on numeric data of vector bundles for indecomposability.

Embedding Suzuki curves in $\mathbb{P}^4$

Here we study the projective geometry of smooth models $X_n \subseteq \mathbb{P}^4$ of plane Suzuki curves $S_n$. The knowledge of a system of generators for the Weierstrass semigroup at the only singular point of the curve is shown to have relevant geometric consequences. In particular, here we explicitly count the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{P}^4$ containing $X_n$ and provide a geometric characterization of those of small degree. We prove that the characterization cannot be extended to higher-degree hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{P}^4$.

Grassmann secants, identifiability, and linear systems of tensors

For any irreducible non-degenerate variety $X\subset \mathbb{P}^r$, we give a criterion for the $(k,s)$-identifiability of $X$. If $k\leq s-1 <r$, then the $(k,s)$-identifiability holds for $X$ if and only if the $s$-identifiability holds for the Segre product $Seg(\mathbb{P}^k\times X)$. Moreover, if the $s$-th secant variety of $X$ is not defective and it does not fill the ambient space, then we can produce a family of pairs $(k,s)$ for which the $(k,s)$-identifiability holds for $X$.

On the typical rank of real bivariate polynomials

Here we study the typical rank for real bivariate homogeneous polynomials of degree $d\ge 6$ (the case $d\le 5$ being settled by P. Comon and G. Ottaviani). We prove that $d-1$ is a typical rank and that if $d$ is odd, then $(d+3)/2$ is a typical rank.
