Error analysis of the Monte Carlo method for compressible magnetohydrodynamics

We study random compressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic flows. Combining the Monte Carlo method with a deterministic finite volume method we solve the random system numerically. Quantitative error estimates including statistical and deterministic errors are analyzed up to a stopping time of the exact solution. On the life-span of an exact strong solution we prove the convergence of the numerical solutions. Numerical experiments illustrate rich dynamics of random viscous compressible magnetohydrodynamics.

Local existence and conditional regularity for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system driven by inhomogeneous boundary conditions

We consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with general inhomogeneous Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. We propose a new approach to the local well-posedness problem based on conditional regularity estimates. By conditional regularity we mean that any strong solution belonging to a suitable class remains regular as long as its amplitude remains bounded. The result holds for general Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions provided the material derivative of the velocity field vanishes on the boundary of the physical domain. As a corollary of this result we obtain: Blow up criteria for strong solutions, Local existence of strong solutions in the optimal L^p-L^q framework, Alternative proof of the existing results on local well posedness.

On the collective effect of a large system of heavy particles immersed in a Newtonian fluid

We consider the motion of a large number of heavy particles in a Newtonian fluid occupying a bounded spatial domain. When we say "heavy", we mean a particle with a mass density that approaches infinity at an appropriate rate as its radius vanishes. We show that the collective effect of heavy particles on the fluid motion is similar to the Brinkman perturbation of the Navier-Stokes system identified in the homogenization process.

On the long time behaviour of solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system on unbounded domains

We consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system on an unbounded domain in the Euclidean space $R^3$, supplemented by the far field conditions for the phase variables, specifically: $ρ\to 0,\ \vartheta \to \vartheta_\infty, \ u \to 0$ as $\ |x| \to \infty$. We study the long time behaviour of solutions and we prove that any global-in-time weak solution to the NSF system approaches the equilibrium $ρ_s = 0,\ \vartheta_s = \vartheta_\infty,\ u_s = 0$ in the sense of ergodic averages for time tending to infinity. As a consequence of the convergence result combined with the total mass conservation, we can show that the total momentum of global-in-time weak solutions is never globally conserved.

On thermally driven fluid flows arising in astrophysics

We consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson system driven by an inhomogeneous temperature distribution on the boundary of an exterior fluid domain. We impose the finite mass constraint, positive far field condition for the temperature as well as the no--slip boundary conditions for the velocity. The existence of global--in--time weak solutions and the weak-strong principle are proved.

Monte Carlo method and the random isentropic Euler system

We show several results on convergence of the Monte Carlo method applied to consistent approximations of the isentropic Euler system of gas dynamics with uncertain initial data. Our method is based on combination of several new concepts. We work with the dissipative weak solutions that can be seen as a universal closure of consistent approximations. Further, we apply the set-valued version of the Strong law of large numbers for general multivalued mapping with closed range and the Komlós theorem on strong converge of empirical averages of integrable functions. Theoretical results are illustrated by a series of numerical simulations obtained by an unconditionally convergent viscosity finite volume method combined with the Monte Carlo method.

On the effect of a large cloud of rigid particles on the motion of an incompressible non--Newtonian fluid

We show that the collective effect of $N$ rigid bodies $(\mathcal{S}_{n,N})_{n=1}^N$ of diameters $(r_{n,N})_{n=1}^N$ immersed in an incompressible non--Newtonian fluid is negligible in the asymptotic limit $N \to \infty$ as long as their total packing volume $\sum_{n=1}^N r_{n,N}^d$, $d=2,3$ tends to zero exponentially -- $\sum_{n=1}^N r_{n,N}^d \approx A^{-N}$ -- for a certain constant $A > 1$. The result is rather surprising and in a sharp contrast with the associated homogenization problem, where the same number of obstacles can completely stop the fluid motion in the case of shear thickening viscosity. A large class of non--Newtonian fluids is included, for which the viscous stress is a subdifferential of a convex potential.

The Oberbeck--Boussinesq approximation and Rayleigh--Benard convection revisited

We consider the Oberbeck--Boussinesq approximation driven by an inhomogeneous temperature distribution on the boundary of a bounded fluid domain. The relevant boundary conditions are perturbed by a non--local term arising in the incompressible limit of the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system. The long time behaviour of the resulting initial/boundary value problem is investigated.

Convergence of numerical methods for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system driven by uncertain initial/boundary data

We consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system governing the motion of a general compressible, heat conducting, Newtonian fluid driven by random initial/boundary data. Convergence of the stochastic collocation and Monte Carlo numerical methods is shown under the hypothesis that approximate solutions are bounded in probability. Abstract results are illustrated by numerical experiments for the Rayleigh-Benard convection problem.

Unconditional stability of equilibria in thermally driven compressible fluids

We show that small perturbations of the spatially homogeneous equilibrium of a thermally driven compressible viscous fluid are globally stable. Specifically, any weak solution of the evolutionary Navier--Stokes--Fourier system driven by thermal convection converges to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity. The main difficulty to overcome is the fact the problem does not admit any obvious Lyapunov function. The result applies, in particular, to the Rayleigh--B\' enard convection problem.

On the incompressible limit of a strongly stratified heat conducting fluid

A compressible, viscous and heat conducting fluid is confined between two parallel plates maintained at a constant temperature and subject to a strong stratification due to the gravitational force. We consider the asymptotic limit, where the Mach number and the Froude number are of the same order proportional to a small parameter. We show the limit problem can be identified with Majda's model of layered ``stack-of-pancake'' flow.

Rigorous derivation of the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation revealing unexpected term

We consider a general compressible viscous and heat conducting fluid confined between two parallel plates and heated from the bottom. The time evolution of the fluid is described by the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system considered in the regime of low Mach and Froude numbers suitably interrelated. Surprisingly and differently to the case of Neumann boundary conditions for the temperature, the asymptotic limit is identified as the Oberbeck--Boussinesq system supplemented with non--local boundary conditions for the temperature deviation.

Thermally driven fluid convection in the incompressible limit regime

We consider a scaled Navier--Stokes--Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible, heat-conducting, viscous fluid driven by inhomogeneous boundary temperature distribution together with the gravitational force of a massive object placed outside the fluid. We identify the limit system in the low Mach/low Froude number regime for the ill prepared initial data. The fluid is confined to a bounded cavity with acoustically hard boundary enhancing reflection of acoustic waves.

Glimm's method and density of wild data for the Euler system of gas dynamics

We adapt Glimm's approximation method to the framework of convex integration to show density of wild data for the (complete) Euler system of gas dynamics. The desired infinite family of entropy admissible solutions emanating from the same initial data is obtained via convex integration of suitable Riemann problems pasted with local smooth solutions. In addition, the wild data belong to BV class.

Mathematical theory of compressible magnetohydrodynamics driven by non-conservative boundary conditions

We propose a new concept of weak solution to the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics driven by large boundary data. The system of the underlying field equations is solvable globally in time in the out of equilibrium regime characteristic for turbulence. The weak solutions comply with the weak-strong uniqueness principle; they coincide with the classical solution of the problem as long as the latter exists. The choice of constitutive relations is motivated by applications in stellar magnetoconvection.
