Compressible magnetohydrodynamics as a dissipative system

We consider the complete system of equations governing the motion of a general compressible, viscous, electrically and heat conductive fluid driven by non-conservative boundary conditions. We show the existence of a bounded absorbing set in the energy space and asymptotic compactness of trajectories. As a corollary, the set of all entire globally bounded solutions is identified as a natural attractor. Examples of boundary conditions giving rise to unbounded solutions are also discussed.

$Γ$-convergence for nearly incompressible fluids

We consider the time-dependent compressible Navier--Stokes equations in the low Mach number regime in a family of domains $Ω_ε\subset R^d$ converging in the sense of Mosco to a domain $Ω\subset R^d$, $d \in \{2,3\}$. We show the limit is the incompressible Navier--Stokes system in $Ω$.

Statistical solutions for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

We show a general stability result in the framework of strong solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible viscous and heat conducting gas. As a corollary, we develop a concept of statistical solution in the class of regular solutions "beyond the blow up time".

On the motion of a large number of small rigid bodies in a viscous incompressible fluid

We consider the motion of $N$ rigid bodies -- compact sets $(\mathcal{S}^1_\varepsilon, \cdots, \mathcal{S}^N_\varepsilon )_{\varepsilon > 0}$ -- immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid contained in a domain in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$. We show the fluid flow is not influenced by the presence of the infinitely many bodies in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ and $N=N(\varepsilon)\rightarrow\infty$ as soon as \[ {\rm diam}[\mathcal{S}^i_\varepsilon ] \to 0 \ \mbox{as}\ \varepsilon \to 0 ,\ i=1,\cdots, N(\varepsilon). \] The result depends solely on the geometry of the bodies and is independent of their mass densities. Collisions are allowed and the initial data are arbitrary with finite energy.

On the motion of a small rigid body in a viscous compressible fluid

We consider the motion of a small rigid object immersed in a viscous compressible fluid in the 3-dimensional Eucleidean space. Assuming the object is a ball of a small radius $\varepsilon$ we show that the behavior of the fluid is not influenced by the object in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$. The result holds for the isentropic pressure law $p(\varrho) = a \varrho^γ$ for any $γ> \frac{3}{2}$ under mild assumptions concerning the rigid body density. In particular, the latter may be bounded as soon as $γ> 3$. The proof uses a new method of construction of the test functions in the weak formulation of the problem, and, in particular, a new form of the so-called Bogovskii operator.

Taylor-Couette flow with temperature fluctuations: Time periodic solutions

We consider the motion of a viscous compressible and heat conducting fluid confined in the gap between two rotating cylinders (Taylor-Couette flow). The temperature of the cylinders is fixed but not necessarily constant. We show that the problem admits a time--periodic solution as soon as the ratio of the angular velocities of the two cylinders is a rational number.

Nonuniqueness of weak solutions to the dissipative Aw-Rascle model

We prove nonuniqueness of weak solutions to multi-dimensional generalisation of the Aw-Rascle model of vehicular traffic. Our generalisation includes the velocity offset in a form of gradient of density function, which results in a dissipation effect, similar to viscous dissipation in the compressible viscous fluid models. We show that despite this dissipation, the extension of the method of convex integration can be applied to generate infinitely many weak solutions connecting arbitrary initial and final states. We also show that for certain choice of data, ill posedness holds in the class of admissible weak solutions.

The Oberbeck-Boussinesq system with non-local boundary conditions

We consider the Oberbeck--Boussinesq system with non--local boundary conditions arising as a singular limit of the full Navier--Stokes--Fourier system in the regime of low Mach and low Froude number. The existence of strong solutions is shown on a maximal time interval $[0, T_{\rm max})$. Moreover, $T_{\rm max} = \infty$ in the two dimensional setting.

On the motion of a nearly incompressible viscous fluid containing a small rigid body

We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $Ω\subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial Ω$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.

Improved error estimates for the finite volume and the MAC schemes for the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We present new error estimates for the finite volume and finite difference methods applied to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The main innovative ingredients of the improved error estimates are a refined consistency analysis combined with a continuous version of the relative energy inequality. Consequently, we obtain better convergence rates than those available in the literature so far. Moreover, the error estimates hold in the whole physically relevant range of the adiabatic coefficient.

Convergence and error analysis of compressible fluid flows with random data: Monte Carlo method

The goal of this paper is to study convergence and error estimates of the Monte Carlo method for the Navier-Stokes equations with random data. To discretize in space and time, the Monte Carlo method is combined with a suitable deterministic discretization scheme, such as a finite volume method. We assume that the initial data, force and the viscosity coefficients are random variables and study both, the statistical convergence rates as well as the approximation errors. Since the compressible Navier-Stokes equations are not known to be uniquely solvable in the class of global weak solutions, we cannot apply pathwise arguments to analyze the random Navier-Stokes equations. Instead we have to apply intrinsic stochastic compactness arguments via the Skorokhod representation theorem and the Gyöngy-Krylov method. Assuming that the numerical solutions are bounded in probability, we prove that the Monte Carlo finite volume method converges to a statistical strong solution. The convergence rates are discussed as well. Numerical experiments illustrate theoretical results.

Time periodic motion of temperature driven compressible fluids

We consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid in a container with impermeable boundary subject to time periodic heating and under the action of a time periodic potential force. We show the existence of a time periodic weak solution for arbitrarily large physically admissible data.

Compressible fluid motion with uncertain data

We propose a suitable analytical framework to perform numerical analysis of problems arising in compressible fluid models with uncertain data. We discuss both weak and strong stochastic approach, where the former is based on the knowledge of the mere distribution (law) of the random data typical for the Monte-Carlo and related methods, while the latter assumes the data to be known as a random variabble on a given probability space aiming at obtaining the associated solution in the same form. As an example of the strong approach, we discuss the stochastic collocation method based on a piecewise constant approximation of the random data.

Approximating viscosity solutions of the Euler system

Applying the concept of S-convergence, based on averaging in the spirit of Strong Law of Large Numbers, the vanishing viscosity solutions of the Euler system are studied. We show how to efficiently compute a viscosity solution of the Euler system as the S-limit of numerical solutions obtained by the Viscosity Finite Volume method. Theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations of the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability problem.

Penalization method for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

We apply the method of penalization to the Dirichlet problem for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system governing the motion of a general viscous compressible fluid confined to a bounded Lipschitz domain. The physical domain is embedded into a large cube on which the periodic boundary conditions are imposed. The original boundary conditions are enforced through a singular friction term in the momentum equation and a heat source/sink term in the internal energy balance. The solutions of the penalized problem are shown to converge to the solution of the limit problem. Numerical experiments are performed to illustrate the efficiency of the method.

Compressible Navier--Stokes system with transport noise

We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system driven by a physically well-motivated transport noise in both continuity as well as momentum equation. We focus on three different situations: (i) the noise is smooth in time and the equations are understood as in the sense of the classical weak deterministic theory, (ii) the noise is rough in time and we interpret the equations in the framework of rough paths with unbounded rough drivers and (iii) we have a Brownian noise of Stratonovich type and study the existence of martingale solutions. The first situation serves as an approximation for (ii) and (iii), while (ii) and (iii) are motivated by recent results on the incompressible Navier--Stokes system concerning the physical modeling as well as regularization by noise.
