Weak solutions to problems involving inviscid fluids

We consider an abstract functional-differential equation derived from the pressure-less Euler system with variable coefficients that includes several systems of partial differential equations arising in the fluid mechanics. Using the method of convex integration we show the existence of infinitely many weak solutions for prescribed initial data and kinetic energy.

On weak solutions to the 2D Savage-Hutter model of the motion of a gravity driven avalanche flow

We consider the Savage-Hutter system consisting of two-dimensional depth-integrated shallow water equations for the incompressible fluid with the Coulomb-type friction term. Using the method of convex integration we show that the associated initial-value problem possesses infinitely many weak solutions for any finite-energy initial data. On the other hand, the problem enjoys the weak-strong uniqueness property provided the system of equations is supplemented with the energy inequality.

Stability of the isentropic Riemann solutions of the full multidimensional Euler system

We consider the complete Euler system describing the time evolution of an inviscid non-isothermal gas. We show that the rarefaction wave solutions of the 1D Riemann problem are stable, in particular unique, in the class of all bounded weak solutions to the associated multi-D problem. This may be seen as a counterpart of the non-uniqueness results of physically admissible solutions emanating from 1D shock waves constructed recently by the method of convex integration.

On the low Mach number limit of compressible flows in exterior moving domains

We study the incompressible limit of solutions to the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes system in the exterior of a bounded domain undergoing a simple translation. The problem is reformulated using a change of coordinates to fixed exterior domain. Using the spectral analysis of the wave propagator, the dispersion of acoustic waves is proved by the means of the RAGE theorem. The solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is identified as a limit.

Robustness of strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We consider the Navier-Stokes system describing the time evolution of a compressible barotropic fluid confined to a bounded spatial domain in the 3-D physical space, supplemented with the Navier's slip boundary conditions. It is shown that the class of global in time strong solutions is robust with respect to small perturbations of the initial data. Explicit qualitative estimates are given also in terms of the shape of the underlying physical domain, with applications to problems posed on thin cylinders.

Uniqueness of rarefaction waves in multidimensional compressible Euler system

We show that 1-D rarefaction wave solutions are unique in the class of bounded entropy solutions to the multidimensional compressible Euler system. Such a result may be viewed as a counterpart of the recent examples of non-uniqueness of the shock wave solutions to the Riemann problem, where infinitely many solutions are constructed by the method of convex integration.

Nonisothermal nematic liquid crystal flows with the Ball-Majumdar free energy

In this paper we prove the existence of global in time weak solutions for an evolutionary PDE system modelling nonisothermal Landau-de Gennes nematic liquid crystal (LC) flows in three dimensions of space. In our model, the incompressible Navier-Stokes system for the macroscopic velocity $\vu$ is coupled to a nonlinear convective parabolic equation describing the evolution of the Q-tensor $\QQ$, namely a tensor-valued variable representing the normalized second order moments of the probability distribution function of the LC molecules. The effects of the (absolute) temperature $\vt$ are prescribed in the form of an energy balance identity complemented with a global entropy production inequality. Compared to previous contributions, we can consider here the physically realistic singular configuration potential $f$ introduced by Ball and Majumdar. This potential gives rise to severe mathematical difficulties since it introduces, in the Q-tensor equation, a term which is at the same time singular in $\QQ$ and degenerate in $\vt$. To treat it a careful analysis of the properties of $f$, particularly of its blow-up rate, is carried out.

Maximal dissipation and well-posedness for the compressible Euler system

We discuss the problem of well-posedness of the compressible (barotropic) Euler system in the framework of weak solutions. The principle of maximal dissipation introduced by C.M. Dafermos is adapted and combined with the concept of admissible weak solutions. We use the method of convex integration in the spirit of the recent work of C.DeLellis and L.Szekelyhidi to show various counterexamples to well-posedness. On the other hand, we conjecture that the principle of maximal dissipation should be retained as a possible criterion of uniqueness as it is violated by the oscillatory solutions obtained in the process of convex integration.

Front propagation in nonlinear parabolic equations

We study existence and stability of travelling waves for nonlinear convection diffusion equations in the 1-D Euclidean space. The diffusion coefficient depends on the gradient in analogy with the p-Laplacian and may be degenerate. Unconditional stability is established with respect to initial data perturbations in the Lebesgue space of integrable functions.

Inviscid incompressible limits under mild stratification: A rigorous derivation of the Euler-Boussinesq system

We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular regime of small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on an unbounded domain in the three dimensional Euclidean space with a compact boundary. We perform the singular limit in the framework of weak solutions and identify the Euler-Boussinesq system as the target problem.

On the weak solutions to the equations of a compressible heat conducting gas

We consider the weak solutions to the Euler-Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible heat conducting gas. Employing the method of convex integration, we show that the problem admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any choice of smooth initial data. We also show that for any initial distribution of the density and temperature, there exists an initial velocity such that the associated initial-value problem possesses infinitely many solutions that conserve the total energy.

Multiple scales and singular limits for compressible rotating fluids with general initial data

We study the singular limit of a rotating compressible fluid described by a scaled barotropic Navier-Stokes system, where the Rossby number, the Mach number and the Froude number tend to 0 in a particular mutual rate while the Reynolds number tends to infinity. The inviscid planar Euler system is identified as the limit problem. The proof is based on the application of the method of relative entropies and careful analysis of oscillatory integrals describing the propagation of Rossby-acoustic waves.

Scale interactions in compressible rotating fluids

We study a triple singular limit for the scaled barotropic Navier-Stokes system modeling the motion of a rotating, compressible, and viscous fluid, where the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter, while the Reynolds number becomes infinite. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab bounded above and below by two parallel planes, the limit behavior is identified as a purely horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid fluid, the evolution of which is described by an analogue of the Euler system.

Evolution of non-isothermal Landau-de Gennes nematic liquid crystals flows with singular potential

We discuss a 3D model describing the time evolution of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory, where the natural physical constraints are enforced by a singular free energy bulk potential proposed by J.M. Ball and A. Majumdar. The thermal effects are present through the component of the free energy that accounts for intermolecular interactions. The model is consistent with the general principle of thermodynamics and mathematically tractable. We identify the a priori estimates for the associated system of evolutionary partial differential equations and construct global-in-time weak solutions for arbitrary physically relevant initial data.

Compressible fluid flows driven by stochastic forcing

We consider the Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible barotropic fluid driven by stochastic external forces. Our approach is semi-deterministic, based on solving the system for each fixed representative of the random variable and applying an abstract result on measurability of multi-valued maps. The class of admissible driving forces includes the (temporal) white noise and the random kicks, considered recently in the context of incompressible fluid models.
