Measure-valued solutions to the complete Euler system

We introduce the concept of dissipative measure-valued solution to the complete Euler system describing the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid. These solutions are characterized by a parameterized (Young) measure and a dissipation defect in the total energy balance. The dissipation defect dominates the concentration errors in the equations satisfied by the Young measure. A dissipative measure-valued solution can be seen as the most general concept of solution to the Euler system retaining its structural stability. In particular, we show that a dissipative measure-valued solution necessarily coincides with a classical one on its life span provided they share the same initial data.

Convergence of a mixed finite element finite volume scheme for the isentropic Navier-Stokes system via dissipative measure-valued solutions

We study convergence of a mixed finite element finite volume numerical scheme for the isentropic Navier-Stokes system under the full range of the adiabatic exponent. We establish suitable stability and consistency estimates and show that the Young measure generated by numerical solutions represents a dissipative measure-valued solutions of the limit system. In particular, using the recently established weak{strong uniqueness principle in the class of dissipative measure-valued solutions we show that the numerical solutions converge strongly to a strong solutions of the limit system as long as the latter exists.

Local strong solutions to the stochastic compressible Navier-Stokes system

We study the Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid driven by a nonlinear multiplicative stochastic force. We establish local in time existence (up to a positive stopping time) of a unique solution, which is strong in both PDE and probabilistic sense. Our approach relies on rewriting the problem as a symmetric hyperbolic system augmented by partial diffusion, which is solved via a suitable approximation procedure using the stochastic compactness method and the Yamada-Watanabe type argument based on the Gyöngy-Krylov characterization of convergence in probability. This leads to the existence of a strong (in the PDE sense) pathwise solution. Finally, we use various stopping time arguments to establish the local existence of a unique strong solution to the original problem.

The inverse of the divergence operator on perforated domains with applications to homogenization problems for the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We study the inverse of the divergence operator on a domain $Ω\subset R^3$ perforated by a system of tiny holes. We show that such inverse can be constructed on the Lebesgue space $L^p(Ω)$ for any $1< p < 3$, with a norm independent of perforation, provided the holes are suitably small and their mutual distance suitably large. Applications are given to problems arising in homogenization of steady compressible fluid flows.

Regularity and Energy Conservation for the Compressible Euler Equations

We give sufficient conditions on the regularity of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler and the compressible isentropic Euler systems in order for the energy to be conserved. Our strategy relies on commutator estimates similar to those employed by P. Constantin et al. for the homogeneous incompressible Euler equations.

Incompressible limit for compressible fluids with stochastic forcing

We study the asymptotic behavior of the isentropic Navier-Stokes system driven by a multiplicative stochastic forcing in the compressible regime, where the Mach number approaches zero. Our approach is based on the recently developed concept of weak martingale solution to the primitive system, uniform bounds derived from a stochastic analogue of the modulated energy inequality, and careful analysis of acoustic waves. A stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes system is identified as the limit problem.

Dissipative weak solutions to compressible Navier-Stokes-Fokker-Planck systems with variable viscosity coefficients

Motivated by a recent paper by Barrett and Süli [J.W. Barrett & E. Süli: Existence of global weak solutions to compressible isentropic finitely extensible bead-spring chain models for dilute polymers, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci., 26 (2016)], we consider the compressible Navier--Stokes system coupled with a Fokker--Planck type equation describing the motion of polymer molecules in a viscous compressible fluid occupying a bounded spatial domain, with polymer-number-density-dependent viscosity coefficients. The model arises in the kinetic theory of dilute solutions of nonhomogeneous polymeric liquids, where the polymer molecules are idealized as bead-spring chains with finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) type spring potentials. The motion of the solvent is governed by the unsteady, compressible, barotropic Navier--Stokes system, where the viscosity coefficients in the Newtonian stress tensor depend on the polymer number density. Our goal is to show that the existence theory developed in the case of constant viscosity coefficients can be extended to the case of polymer-number-density-dependent viscosities, provided that certain technical restrictions are imposed, relating the behavior of the viscosity coefficients and the pressure for large values of the solvent density. As a first step in this direction, we prove here the weak sequential stability of the family of dissipative (finite-energy) weak solutions to the system.

Dissipative measure-valued solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We introduce a new concept of dissipative measure-valued solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes system satisfying, in addition, a relevant form of the total energy balance. Then we show that a dissipative measure-valued and a standard smooth classical solution originating from the same initial data coincide (weak-strong uniqueness principle) as long as the latter exists. Such a result facilitates considerably the proof of convergence of solutions to various approximations including certain numerical schemes that are known to generate a measure-valued solution. As a byproduct we show that any measure-valued solution with bounded density component that starts from smooth initial data is necessarily a classical one.

Weak solutions for Euler systems with non-local interactions

We consider several modifications of the Euler system of fluid dynamics including its pressureless variant driven by non-local interaction repulsive-attractive and alignment forces in the space dimension $N=2,3$. These models arise in the study of self-organisation in collective behavior modeling of animals and crowds. We adapt the method of convex integration to show the existence of infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any bounded initial data. Then we consider the class of \emph{dissipative} solutions satisfying, in addition, the associated global energy balance (inequality). We identify a large set of initial data for which the problem admits infinitely many dissipative weak solutions. Finally, we establish a weak-strong uniqueness principle for the pressure driven Euler system with non-local interaction terms as well as for the pressureless system with Newtonian interaction.

A rigorous justification of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations with geometric effects

We derive the 1D isentropic Euler and Navier-Stokes equations describing the motion of a gas through a nozzle of variable cross section as the asymptotic limit of the 3D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in a cylinder, the diameter of which tends to zero. Our method is based on the relative energy inequality satisfied by any weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes system and a variant of Korn-Poincare's inequality on thin channels that may be of independent interest.

$\mathcal{A}$-free rigidity and applications to the compressible Euler system

Can every measure-valued solution to the compressible Euler equations be approximated by a sequence of weak solutions? We prove that the answer is negative: Generalizing a well-known rigidity result of Ball and James to a more general situation, we construct an explicit measure-valued solution for the compressible Euler equations which can not be generated by a sequence of distributional solutions. We also give an abstract necessary condition for measure-valued solutions to be generated by weak solutions, relying on work of Fonseca and Müller. This difference between weak and measure-valued solutions in the compressible case is in contrast with the incompressible situation, where every measure-valued solution can be approximated by weak solutions, as shown by Székelyhidi and Wiedemann.

On asymptotic isotropy for a hydrodynamic model of liquid crystals

We study a PDE system describing the motion of liquid crystals by means of the $Q-$tensor description for the crystals coupled with the incompressible Navier-Stokes system. Using the method of Fourier splitting, we show that solutions of the system tend to the isotropic state at the rate $(1 + t)^{-3/2}$ as $t \to \infty$.

Compressible fluids driven by stochastic forcing: The relative energy inequality and applications

We show the relative energy inequality for the compressible Navier-Stokes system driven by a stochastic forcing. As a corollary, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness property (pathwise and in law) and convergence of weak solutions in the inviscid-incompressible limit. In particular, we establish a Yamada-Watanabe type result in the context of the compressible Navier-Stokes system, that is, pathwise weak--strong uniqueness implies weak--strong uniqueness in law.

On the motion of viscous, compressible and heat-conducting liquids

We consider a system of equations governing the motion of a viscous, compressible, and heat conducting liquid-like fluid, with a general EOS of Mie-Grueneisen type. In addition, we suppose that the viscosity coefficients may decay to zero for large values of the temperature. We show the existence of global-in-time weak solution, derive a relative energy inequality, and compare the weak solutions with strong one emanating from the same initial data - the weak strong uniqueness property.

Error estimates for a numerical method for the compressible Navier-Stokes system on sufficiently smooth domains

We derive an a priori error estimate for the numerical solution obtained by time and space discretization by the finite volume/finite element method of the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations. The numerical solution on a convenient polyhedral domain approximating a sufficiently smooth bounded domain is compared with an exact solution of the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations with a bounded density. The result is unconditional in the sense that there are no assumed bounds on the numerical solution.

Analysis of a diffuse interface model of multispecies tumor growth

We consider a diffuse interface model for tumor growth recently proposed in [Y. Chen, S.M. Wise, V.B. Shenoy, J.S. Lowengrub, A stable scheme for a nonlinear, multiphase tumor growth model with an elastic membrane, Int. J. Numer. Methods Biomed. Eng., 30 (2014), 726-754]. In this new approach sharp interfaces are replaced by narrow transition layers arising due to adhesive forces among the cell species. Hence, a continuum thermodynamically consistent model is introduced. The resulting PDE system couples four different types of equations: a Cahn-Hilliard type equation for the tumor cells (which include proliferating and dead cells), a Darcy law for the tissue velocity field, whose divergence may be different from 0 and depend on the other variables, a transport equation for the proliferating (viable) tumor cells, and a quasi-static reaction diffusion equation for the nutrient concentration. We establish existence of weak solutions for the PDE system coupled with suitable initial and boundary conditions. In particular, the proliferation function at the boundary is supposed to be nonnegative on the set where the velocity ${\bf u}$ satisfies ${\bf u}\cdotν>0$, where $ν$ is the outer normal to the boundary of the domain. We also study a singular limit as the diffuse interface coefficient tends to zero.

On singular limits arising in the scale analysis of stratified fluid flows

We study the low Mach low Freude numbers limit in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the transport equation for evolution of an entropy variable -- the potential temperature $Θ$. We consider the case of well-prepared initial data on "flat" tours and Reynolds number tending to infinity, and the case of ill-prepared data on an infinite slab. In both cases, we show that the weak solutions to the primitive system converge to the solution to the anelastic Navier-Stokes system and the transport equation for the second order variation of $Θ$

Vanishing dissipation limit for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

We consider the motion of a compressible, viscous, and heat conducting fluid in the regime of small viscosity and heat conductivity. It is shown that weak solutions of the associated Navier- Stokes-Fourier system converge to a (strong) solution of the Euler system on its life span. The problem is studied in a bounded domain in the three dimensional Euclidean space, on the boundary of which the velocity field satisfies the complete slip boundary conditions.
