Transceiver Design for Cell-Free Unsourced Random Access

We propose a low-complexity, energy-efficient solution for cell-free unsourced random access (URA), in which multiple distributed access points are connected to a central processing unit via a fronthaul. Assuming that each user transmits a pilot sequence followed by a polar codeword whose symbols are placed to the data part of the frame according to an on-off pattern, we utilize iterative decoding, including orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP)-based pilot detection and channel estimation, symbol estimation using a linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) solution, symbol combining, single-user decoding, and successive interference cancellation (SIC). We also present finite blocklength (FBL) performance and detailed complexity analyses. Numerical results demonstrate that the FBL analysis properly characterizes system performance and that the proposed cell-free URA scheme offers superior performance compared to existing low-complexity schemes. Namely, it offers a superior performance of up to 4.5 dB and can accommodate up to 1800 active users.

Group-Connected Riemannian Manifold Optimization for Reciprocal BD-RIS

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) provide a flexible means of engineering wireless propagation channels through configurable multiport scattering networks. Among their architectures, group-connected beyond-diagonal RISs (BD-RISs) offer a practical tradeoff between scattering flexibility and hardware complexity by partitioning the surface into inter-connected groups. In reciprocal and lossless implementations, each group scattering block must be symmetric and unitary. In this paper, we investigate sum-rate maximization for reciprocal group-connected BD-RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under such structural constraints. In particular, we build on a recent result where the feasible space determined by the symmetry and unitary constraints was characterized as a Riemannian manifold, extending it into a product manifold of symmetric-unitary block manifolds, thus expanding the approach to manifold phase optimization in the group-connected setting. As a consequence, the proposed group-extended framework performs tangent-space projections and Takagi retractions block-wise, while preserving the coupling among all groups through the common MIMO equivalent channel. The formulation naturally includes single-connected and fully connected reciprocal BD-RIS architectures as special cases and enables a flexible performance-complexity tradeoff through the group size.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for PA Distortion-Aware M-MIMO OFDM System

Maintaining high energy efficiency (EE) in wireless networks is crucial, particularly with the adoption of massive MIMO technology. This work introduces a resource allocation framework that jointly optimizes transmit power assigned to each user and the number of active antennas, while explicitly accounting for a nonlinear Power Amplifier (PA). We consider a downlink MU-MIMO-OFDM transmission with zero forcing (ZF) precoding, Rayleigh fading channels, and soft-limiter PAs, with both ideal and realistic PA architectures. In contrast to existing formulations, our optimization framework avoids imposing an explicit transmit power constraint, since the nonlinear distortion inherently limits the feasible operating region. To solve the resulting non-convex problem, an alternating optimization approach is adopted that, by exploiting properties of the EE function, guarantees convergence to a stationary point. Extensive simulations demonstrate consistent performance gains over distortion-neglecting and power-only optimized baselines. In a scenario of a 5 km radius cell serving 60 randomly distributed users, the median EE gains over the distortion-neglecting allocation reach 40% for ideal PAs and 20% for Class B PAs, confirming high impact of the proposed solution.

The manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices: characterization, Riemannian optimization and application to BD-RIS design

This paper proposes and analyzes Riemannian optimization algorithms on the manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices, denoted ${\cal {U}}_s$, which naturally models the scattering matrices of passive and reciprocal devices such as beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RISs). Despite its relevance, the geometry of ${\cal {U}}_s$ has remained largely unexplored, and existing BD-RIS optimization methods either ignore the symmetry constraint or rely on costly Takagi-based parameterizations. We first provide a rigorous geometric characterization of ${\cal {U}}_s$, deriving its tangent space, a simple retraction, and closed-form expressions for geodesics. Building on these results, we develop two Riemannian manifold optimization (MO) algorithms tailored to ${\cal {U}}_s$: a line-search (LS) based scheme and a phase-optimization (PO) update along geodesics. We then apply the proposed framework to BD-RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) links, addressing sum-gain maximization, rate maximization, and minimum mean-square error problems, where they outperform existing approaches. Furthermore, we show that when the number of BD-RIS elements exceeds the total number of antennas, the optimal scattering matrix is low-rank, which motivates and enables efficient low-rank variants of the proposed algorithms.

Resource Allocation and Beamforming in FIM-Assisted BS and STAR-BD-RIS-Aided NOMA: An AIW-Meta-Learning Approach

This paper investigates a flexible intelligent metasurface (FIM)-enabled wireless communication system that integrates simultaneously transmitting and reflecting beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-BD-RIS) with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The considered system consists of a multi-antenna FIM-assisted base station (BS) supported by dual-sector BD-RIS. The FIM is composed of low-cost radiating elements capable of independent signal transmission and dynamic vertical reconfiguration (morphing). The objective is to maximize energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the BS beamforming, STAR-BD-RIS configuration, NOMA-related variables, and the FIM surface shape under practical power constraints. Due to the highly non-convex nature of the problem, an adaptive inverse-weighted Meta-Soft Actor-Critic (AIW-Meta-SAC) algorithm is proposed. Unlike conventional Meta-SAC approaches, the proposed method employs an adaptive weighting mechanism to effectively incorporate system constraints into the reward function, thereby improving learning efficiency and convergence behavior. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed AIW-Meta-SAC significantly outperforms the Meta-DDPG baseline. Furthermore, the FIM-assisted STAR-BD-RIS architecture achieves notable energy efficiency gains compared to conventional benchmark schemes.

Optimal symmetric low-rank BD-RIS configuration maximizing the determinant of a MIMO link

Beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RISs) significantly improve wireless performance by allowing tunable interconnections among elements, but their design in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has so far relied on complex iterative algorithms or suboptimal approximations. This work introduces a simple yet powerful approach: instead of directly maximizing the achievable rate, we maximize the absolute value of the determinant of the equivalent MIMO channel. We derive a closed-form symmetric unitary scattering matrix whose rank is exactly twice the channel's degrees of freedom ($2r$). Remarkably, this low-rank solution achieves the same determinant value as the optimal unitary BD-RIS. Using log-majorization theory, we prove that the rate loss relative to the optimal unitary BD-RIS vanishes at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or when the number of BD-RIS elements becomes large. Moreover, the proposed solution can be perfectly implemented using a $q$-stem BD-RIS architecture with only $q=2r-1$ stems, requiring a minimum number of reconfigurable circuits. The resulting Max-Det solution is orders of magnitude faster to compute than existing iterative methods while achieving near-optimal rates in practical scenarios. This makes high-performance BD-RIS deployment feasible even with large surfaces and limited computational resources.

Riemannian optimization on the manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices with application to BD-RIS-assisted systems

In this paper, we rigorously characterize for the first time the manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices, deriving its tangent space and its geodesics. The resulting parameterization of the geodesics (through a real and symmetric matrix) allows us to derive a new Riemannian manifold optimization (MO) algorithm whose most remarkable feature is that it does not need to set any adaptation parameter. We apply the proposed MO algorithm to maximize the achievable rate in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS), illustrating the method's performance through simulations. The MO algorithm achieves a significant reduction in computational cost compared to previous alternatives based on Takagi decomposition, while retaining global convergence to a stationary point of the cost function.

A Hands-On Molecular Communication Testbed for Undergraduate Education

This work presents a hands-on molecular communication (MC) testbed developed for the undergraduate Communication Engineering lab course at the Institute for Communications Technology (IfN), TU~Braunschweig. The goal of the experiment is to provide students with an intuitive and reproducible introduction to MC concepts using a low-cost and accessible fluidic setup. The system employs a background water flow into which three dye colors are injected and symbols are detected by a multi-wavelength photosensor. A zero-forcing--based estimator is used to separate the spectral components and reliably identify the transmitted colors. The experiment is designed to be completed independently by students within a single laboratory session and requires only basic prior knowledge from introductory communication engineering courses. A detailed script accompanies the experiment, guiding students through channel characterization, color detection, pseudoinverse computation, and simple data transmission using on-off keying. In pilot trials, students successfully reproduced the entire communication chain and achieved stable data rates of up to 0.5~bit/s over a 15~cm channel. The proposed testbed demonstrates that fundamental principles of MC can be taught effectively using a compact and inexpensive experimental setup. The experiment will be integrated into an undergraduate lab course.

Spectral-Energy Efficiency Tradeoff of Nearly-Passive RIS in MIMO URLLC Downlink: Diagonal vs. Beyond Diagonal

This paper investigates the spectral and energy efficiency (EE) tradeoff of nearly-passive (NP), both locally and globally NP (GNP), reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), considering diagonal and beyond-diagonal (BD) implementations in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) broadcast channels designed for ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). We demonstrate that while all RIS architectures enhance the spectral efficiency, GNP BD-RIS achieves the highest gains. However, its EE is highly sensitive to the static circuit power consumption since BD-RIS has many more circuit elements than diagonal architectures. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the benefits of BD-RIS over diagonal RIS diminish as the number of data streams per user increases due to enhanced channel diversity in MIMO systems.

6G Resilience -- White Paper

6G must be designed to withstand, adapt to, and evolve amid prolonged, complex disruptions. Mobile networks' shift from efficiency-first to sustainability-aware has motivated this white paper to assert that resilience is a primary design goal, alongside sustainability and efficiency, encompassing technology, architecture, and economics. We promote resilience by analysing dependencies between mobile networks and other critical systems, such as energy, transport, and emergency services, and illustrate how cascading failures spread through infrastructures. We formalise resilience using the 3R framework: reliability, robustness, resilience. Subsequently, we translate this into measurable capabilities: graceful degradation, situational awareness, rapid reconfiguration, and learning-driven improvement and recovery. Architecturally, we promote edge-native and locality-aware designs, open interfaces, and programmability to enable islanded operations, fallback modes, and multi-layer diversity (radio, compute, energy, timing). Key enablers include AI-native control loops with verifiable behaviour, zero-trust security rooted in hardware and supply-chain integrity, and networking techniques that prioritise critical traffic, time-sensitive flows, and inter-domain coordination. Resilience also has a techno-economic aspect: open platforms and high-quality complementors generate ecosystem externalities that enhance resilience while opening new markets. We identify nine business-model groups and several patterns aligned with the 3R objectives, and we outline governance and standardisation. This white paper serves as an initial step and catalyst for 6G resilience. It aims to inspire researchers, professionals, government officials, and the public, providing them with the essential components to understand and shape the development of 6G resilience.

Optimal Distortion-Aware Multi-User Power Allocation for Massive MIMO Networks

Real-world wireless transmitter front-ends exhibit certain nonlinear behavior, e.g., signal clipping by a Power Amplifier (PA). Although many resource allocation solutions do not consider this for simplicity, it leads to inaccurate results or a reduced number of degrees of freedom, not achieving the global performance. In this work, we propose an optimal PA distortion-aware power allocation strategy in a downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) based massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) system. Assuming a soft-limiter PA model, where the transmission occurs under small-scale independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) Rayleigh fading channel, we derive the wideband signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) and formulate the power allocation problem. Most interestingly, the distortion introduced by the PA leads to an SNDR-efficient operating point without explicit transmit power constraints. While the optimization problem is non-convex, we decouple it into a non-convex total power allocation problem and a convex power distribution problem among the users (UEs). We propose an alternating optimization algorithm to find the optimum solution. Our simulation results show significant sum-rate gains over existing distortion-neglecting solutions, e.g., a median 4 times increase and a median 50\% increase for a 64-antenna and 512-antenna base station serving 60 users, respectively.

A Scalable Machine Learning Approach Enabled RIS Optimization with Implicit Channel Estimation

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as a key enabler of the next-generation mobile radio systems. While attracting extensive interest from academia and industry due to its passive nature and low cost, scalability of RIS elements and requirement for channel state information (CSI) are two major difficulties for the RIS to become a reality. In this work, we introduce an unsupervised machine learning (ML) enabled optimization approach to configure the RIS. The dedicated neural network (NN) architecture RISnet is combined with an implicit channel estimation method. The RISnet learns to map from received pilot signals to RIS configuration directly without explicit channel estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms baselines significantly.

STAR-RIS-aided RSMA for the URLLC multi-user MIMO Downlink

Rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is intrinsically amalgamated with simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to enhance energy efficiency (EE) of the finite block length (FBL) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink. An alternating optimization-based algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming matrices, STAR-RIS configurations, and rate-splitting parameters. STAR-RIS attains 360-degree full-plane coverage, while RSMA provides a prominent gain by efficiently managing interference. Numerical results reveal a strong synergy between RSMA and STAR-RIS, demonstreating significant EE gains over reflective RIS and spatial division multiple access (SDMA).

Rate Splitting Multiple Access for RIS-aided URLLC MIMO Broadcast Channels

The performance of modern wireless communication systems is typically limited by interference. The impact of interference can be even more severe in ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) use cases. A powerful tool for managing interference is rate splitting multiple access (RSMA), which encompasses many multiple-access technologies like non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), spatial division multiple access (SDMA), and broadcasting. Another effective technology to enhance the performance of URLLC systems and mitigate interference is constituted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). This paper develops RSMA schemes for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) RIS-aided broadcast channels (BCs) based on finite block length (FBL) coding. We show that RSMA and RISs can substantially improve the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of MIMO RIS-aided URLLC systems. Additionally, the gain of employing RSMA and RISs noticeably increases when the reliability and latency constraints are more stringent. Furthermore, RISs impact RSMA differently, depending on the user load. If the system is underloaded, RISs are able to manage the interference sufficiently well, making the gains of RSMA small. However, when the user load is high, RISs and RSMA become synergetic.

A Framework for Fractional Matrix Programming Problems with Applications in FBL MU-MIMO

An efficient framework is conceived for fractional matrix programming (FMP) optimization problems (OPs) namely for minimization and maximization. In each generic OP, either the objective or the constraints are functions of multiple arbitrary continuous-domain fractional functions (FFs). This ensures the framework's versatility, enabling it to solve a broader range of OPs than classical FMP solvers, like Dinkelbach-based algorithms. Specifically, the generalized Dinkelbach algorithm can only solve multiple-ratio FMP problems. By contrast, our framework solves OPs associated with a sum or product of multiple FFs as the objective or constraint functions. Additionally, our framework provides a single-loop solution, while most FMP solvers require twin-loop algorithms. Many popular performance metrics of wireless communications are FFs. For instance, latency has a fractional structure, and minimizing the sum delay leads to an FMP problem. Moreover, the mean square error (MSE) and energy efficiency (EE) metrics have fractional structures. Thus, optimizing EE-related metrics such as the sum or geometric mean of EEs and enhancing the metrics related to spectral-versus-energy-efficiency tradeoff yield FMP problems. Furthermore, both the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and the channel dispersion are FFs. In this paper, we also develop resource allocation schemes for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems, using finite block length (FBL) coding, demonstrating attractive practical applications of FMP by optimizing the aforementioned metrics.

Optimized Frequency-Diverse Movable Antenna Arrays for Directional Secrecy in Wireless Systems

Movable-antenna (MA) arrays are envisioned as a promising technique for enhancing secrecy performance in wireless communications by leveraging additional spatial degrees of freedom. However, when the eavesdropper is located in the same direction as the legitimate user, particularly in mmWave/THz bands where line-of-sight (LOS) propagation dominates, the secrecy performance of MA arrays becomes significantly limited, thus directionally insecure. To address this challenge, we employ a joint design that combines an MA array with a frequency-diverse array (FDA) at the transmitter to secure the transmission across both range and direction. Specifically, we derive closed-form expressions for the optimal antenna positions and frequency shifts, assuming small perturbations in both parameters from a linear frequency-diverse MA configuration. Furthermore, we compare the worst-case secrecy rate under this minor perturbation assumption with that obtained under a general constraint, where simulated annealing is employed to numerically determine the optimal parameters. Simulation results confirm that the proposed optimized frequency diverse MA approach significantly enhances secrecy performance in the presence of an eavesdropper aligned with the direction of the legitimate receiver.

Energy Efficiency Optimization of Finite Block Length STAR-RIS-aided MU-MIMO Broadcast Channels

Energy-efficient designs are proposed for multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BC), assisted by simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) operating at finite block length (FBL). In particular, we maximize the sum energy efficiency (EE), showing that STAR-RIS can substantially enhance it. Our findings demonstrate that the gains of employing STAR-RIS increase when the codeword length and the maximum tolerable bit error rate decrease, meaning that a STAR-RIS is more energy efficient in a system with more stringent latency and reliability requirements.
