On the Performance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with MIMO VLC

This paper centers around a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system, where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) benefits from a light emitting diode (LED) array to serve photo-diode (PD)-equipped users for illumination and communication simultaneously. Concerning the battery limitation of the UAV and considerable energy consumption of the LED array, a hybrid dimming control scheme is devised at the UAV that effectively controls the number of glared LEDs and thereby mitigates the overall energy consumption. To assess the performance of this system, a radio resource allocation problem is accordingly formulated for jointly optimizing the motion trajectory, transmit beamforming and LED selection at the UAV, assuming that channel state information (CSI) is partially available. By reformulating the optimization problem in Markov decision process (MDP) form, we propose a soft actor-critic (SAC) mechanism that captures the dynamics of the problem and optimizes its parameters. Additionally, regarding the high mobility of the UAV and thus remarkable rearrangement of the system, we enhance the trained SAC model by integrating a meta-learning strategy that enables more adaptation to system variations. By defining energy efficiency as a trade-off between the data rate and power consumption, simulations verify that upgrading a single-LED UAV by an array of 10 LEDs, exhibits 47% and 34% improvements in data rate and energy efficiency, albeit at the expense of 8% more power consumption.

Rate Analysis and Optimization of LoS Beyond Diagonal RIS-assisted MIMO Systems

In this letter, we derive an expression for the achievable rate in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) when the channels to and from the BD-RIS are line-of-sight (LoS) while the direct link is non-line-of-sight (NLoS). The rate expression allows to derive the optimal unitary and symmetric scattering BD-RIS matrix in closed form. Our simulation results show that the proposed solution is competitive even under the more usual Ricean channel fading model when the direct link is weak.

Interference Minimization in Beyond-Diagonal RIS-assisted MIMO Interference Channels

This paper proposes a two-stage approach for passive and active beamforming in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels (ICs) assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS). In the first stage, the passive BD-RIS is designed to minimize the aggregate interference power at all receivers, a cost function called interference leakage (IL). To this end, we propose an optimization algorithm in the manifold of unitary matrices and a suboptimal but computationally efficient solution. In the second stage, users' active precoders are designed under different criteria such as minimizing the IL (min-IL), maximizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (max-SINR), or maximizing the sum rate (max-SR). The residual interference not cancelled by the BD-RIS is treated as noise by the precoders. Our simulation results show that the max-SR precoders provide more than 20% sum rate improvement compared to other designs, especially when the BD-RIS has a moderate number of elements ($M<20$) and users transmit with high power, in which case the residual interference is still significant.

ODMA-Based Cell-Free Unsourced Random Access with Successive Interference Cancellation

We consider the unsourced random access problem with multiple receivers and propose a cell-free type solution for that. In our proposed scheme, the active users transmit their signals to the access points (APs) distributed in a geographical area and connected to a central processing unit (CPU). The transmitted signals are composed of a pilot and polar codeword, where the polar codeword bits occupy a small fraction of the data part of the transmission frame. The receiver operations of pilot detection and channel and symbol estimation take place at the APs, while the actual message bits are detected at the CPU by combining the symbol estimates from the APs forwarded over the fronthaul. The effect of the successfully decoded messages is then subtracted at the APs. Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed scheme can support up to 1400 users with a high energy efficiency, and the distributed structure decreases the error probability by more than two orders of magnitude.

Meta-Learning for Resource Allocation in Uplink Multi-Active STAR-RIS-aided NOMA System

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) is a novel technology which enables the full-space coverage. In this letter, a multi-active STAR-RIS-aided system using non-orthogonal multiple access in an uplink transmission is considered, where the second-order reflections among multiple active STAR-RISs assist the transmission from the single-antenna users to the multi-antenna base station. Specifically, the total sum rate maximization problem is solved by jointly optimizing the active beamforming, power allocation, transmission and reflection beamforming at the active STAR-RISs, and user-active STAR-RIS assignment. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, a novel deep reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed which integrates Meta-learning and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), denoted by Meta-DDPG. Numerical results reveal that our proposed Meta-DDPG algorithm outperforms the DDPG algorithm with $19\%$ improvement, while second-order reflections among multi-active STAR-RISs provide $74.1\%$ enhancement in the total data rate.

URLLC Networks enabled by STAR-RIS, Rate Splitting, and Multiple Antennas

The challenges in dense ultra-reliable low-latency communication networks to deliver the required service to multiple devices are addressed by three main technologies: multiple antennas at the base station (MISO), rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) with private and common message encoding, and simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS). Careful resource allocation, encompassing beamforming and RIS optimization, is required to exploit the synergy between the three. We propose an alternating optimization-based algorithm, relying on minorization-maximization. Numerical results show that the achievable second-order max-min rates of the proposed scheme outperform the baselines significantly. MISO, RSMA, and STAR-RIS all contribute to enabling ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC).

Rate Region of RIS-Aided URLLC Broadcast Channels: Diagonal versus Beyond Diagonal Globally Passive RIS

We analyze the finite-block-length rate region of wireless systems aided by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), employing treating interference as noise. We consider three nearly passive RIS architectures, including locally passive (LP) diagonal (D), globally passive (GP) D, and GP beyond diagonal (BD) RISs. In a GP RIS, the power constraint is applied globally to the whole surface, while some elements may amplify the incident signal locally. The considered RIS architectures provide substantial performance gains compared with systems operating without RIS. GP BD-RIS outperforms, at the price of increasing the complexity, LP and GP D-RIS as it enlarges the feasible set of allowed solutions. However, the gain provided by BD-RIS decreases with the number of RIS elements. Additionally, deploying RISs provides higher gains as the reliability/latency requirement becomes more stringent.

Optimization of the Downlink Spectral- and Energy-Efficiency of RIS-aided Multi-user URLLC MIMO Systems

Modern wireless communication systems are expected to provide improved latency and reliability. To meet these expectations, a short packet length is needed, which makes the first-order Shannon rate an inaccurate performance metric for such communication systems. A more accurate approximation of the achievable rates of finite-block-length (FBL) coding regimes is known as the normal approximation (NA). It is therefore of substantial interest to study the optimization of the FBL rate in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which each user may transmit and/or receive multiple data streams. Hence, we formulate a general optimization problem for improving the spectral and energy efficiency of multi-user MIMO-aided ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) systems, which are assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We show that an RIS is capable of substantially improving the performance of multi-user MIMO-aided URLLC systems. Moreover, the benefits of RIS increase as the packet length and/or the tolerable bit error rate are reduced. This reveals that RISs can be even more beneficial in URLLC systems for improving the FBL rates than in conventional systems approaching Shannon rates.

An Achievable Rate-Distortion Region of Joint Identification and Sensing for Multiple Access Channels

In contrast to Shannon transmission codes, the size of identification (ID) codes for discrete memoryless channels (DMCs) experiences doubly exponential growth with the block length when randomized encoding is used. Additional enhancements within the ID paradigm can be realized through supplementary resources such as quantum entanglement, common randomness (CR), and feedback. Joint transmission and sensing demonstrate significant benefits over separation-based methods. Inspired by the significant impact of feedback on the ID capacity, our work delves into the realm of joint ID and sensing (JIDAS) for state-dependent multiple access channels (SD-MACs) with noiseless strictly casual feedback. Here, the senders aim to convey ID messages to the receiver while simultaneously sensing the channel states. We establish a lower bound on the capacity-distortion region of the SD-MACs. An example shows that JIDAS outperforms the separation-based approach.

Identification via Gaussian Multiple Access Channels in the Presence of Feedback

We investigate message identification over a K-sender Gaussian multiple access channel (K-GMAC). Unlike conventional Shannon transmission codes, the size of randomized identification (ID) codes experiences a doubly exponential growth in the code length. Improvements in the ID approach can be attained through additional resources such as quantum entanglement, common randomness (CR), and feedback. It has been demonstrated that an infinite capacity can be attained for a single-user Gaussian channel with noiseless feedback, irrespective of the chosen rate scaling. We establish the capacity region of both the K-sender Gaussian multiple access channel (K-GMAC) and the K-sender state-dependent Gaussian multiple access channel (K-SD-GMAC) when strictly causal noiseless feedback is available.

Energy Efficiency Comparison of RIS Architectures in MISO Broadcast Channels

In this paper, we develop energy-efficient schemes for multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channels (BCs), assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). To this end, we consider three architectures of RIS: locally passive diagonal (LP-D), globally passive diagonal (GP-D), and globally passive beyond diagonal (GP-BD). In a globally passive RIS, the power of the output signal of the RIS is not greater than its input power, but some RIS elements can amplify the signal. In a locally passive RIS, every element cannot amplify the incident signal. We show that these RIS architectures can substantially improve energy efficiency (EE) if the static power of the RIS elements is not too high. Moreover, GP-BD RIS, which has a higher complexity and static power than LP-D RIS and GP-D RIS, provides better spectral efficiency, but its EE performance highly depends on the static power consumption and may be worse than its diagonal counterparts.

MIMO Capacity Maximization with Beyond-Diagonal RIS

This paper addresses the problem of maximizing the capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS). We maximize the capacity by alternately optimizing the transmit covariance matrix, and the BD-RIS scattering matrix, which, according to network theory, should be unitary and symmetric. These constraints make the optimization of BD-RIS more challenging than that of diagonal RIS. To find a stationary point of the capacity we maximize a sequence of quadratic problems in the manifold of unitary matrices. This leads to an efficient algorithm that always improves the capacity obtained by a diagonal RIS. Through simulation examples, we study the capacity improvement provided by a passive BD-RIS architecture over the conventional RIS model in which the phase shift matrix is diagonal.

Optimal Parametrization of the Gale-Shapley Preallocation Method for Combinatorial Auction-based Channel Assignment

Algorithms based on combinatorial auctions show significant potential regarding their application for channel assignment problems in multi-connectivity ultra-reliable wireless networks. However the computational effort required by such algorithms grows fast with the number of users and resources. Therefore, preallocation-based combinatorial auction represents a promising approach for these setups. The aim of the preallocation is to constrain the number of bids submitted by participants in the combinatorial auction process, thus reducing computational demands and enabling numerical feasibility of the auction problem. Reduction of bid number is achieved via limiting the number of items (channels) considered by auction participants (tenants) in their bids. Thus the aim of preallocation is to non-exclusively assign channels to tenants. This assignment serves as a basis for the later bid generation in the auction procedure. In this paper we analyze the optimal parametrization of the many-to-many Gale-Shapley preallocation method and formulate recommendations for optimal performance. Numerical assessments illustrate that the appropriate preallocation has significant impact on the performance and computational demand.

SLIPT in Joint Dimming Multi-LED OWC Systems with Rate Splitting Multiple Access

Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems with multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have recently been explored to support energy-limited devices via simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT). The energy consumption, however, becomes considerable by increasing the number of incorporated LEDs. This paper proposes a joint dimming (JD) scheme that lowers the consumed power of a SLIPT-enabled OWC system by controlling the number of active LEDs. We further enhance the data rate of this system by utilizing rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). More specifically, we formulate a data rate maximization problem to optimize the beamforming design, LED selection and RSMA rate adaptation that guarantees the power budget of the OWC transmitter, as well as the quality-of-service (QoS) and an energy harvesting level for users. We propose a dynamic resource allocation solution based on proximal policy optimization (PPO) reinforcement learning. In simulations, the optimal dimming level is determined to initiate a trade-off between the data rate and power consumption. It is also verified that RSMA significantly improves the data rate.

Maximizing Spectral and Energy Efficiency in Multi-user MIMO OFDM Systems with RIS and Hardware Impairment

An emerging technology to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems is reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is shown to be very powerful in single-carrier systems. However, in multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, RIS may not be as promising as in single-carrier systems since an independent optimization of RIS elements at each sub-carrier is impossible in multi-carrier systems. Thus, this paper investigates the performance of various RIS technologies like regular (reflective and passive), simultaneously transmit and reflect (STAR), and multi-sector beyond diagonal (BD) RIS in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM broadcast channels (BC). This requires to formulate and solve a joint MIMO precoding and RIS optimization problem. The obtained solution reveals that RIS can significantly improve the system performance even when the number of RIS elements is relatively low. Moreover, we develop resource allocation schemes for STAR-RIS and multi-sector BD-RIS in MIMO OFDM BCs, and show that these RIS technologies can outperform a regular RIS, especially when the regular RIS cannot assist the communications for all the users.

Optimization of Rate-Splitting Multiple Access in Beyond Diagonal RIS-assisted URLLC Systems

This paper proposes a general optimization framework for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) in beyond diagonal (BD) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) systems. This framework can provide a suboptimal solution for a large family of optimization problems in which the objective and/or constraints are linear functions of the rates and/or energy efficiency (EE) of users. Using this framework, we show that RSMA and RIS can be mutually beneficial tools when the system is overloaded, i.e., when the number of users per cell is higher than the number of base station (BS) antennas. Additionally, we show that the benefits of RSMA increase when the packets are shorter and/or the reliability constraint is more stringent. Furthermore, we show that the RSMA benefits increase with the number of users per cell and decrease with the number of BS antennas. Finally, we show that RIS (either diagonal or BD) can highly improve the system performance, and BD-RIS outperforms regular RIS.

Maximization of minimum rate in MIMO OFDM RIS-assisted Broadcast Channels

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. By optimizing the RIS elements, the performance of the overall system can be improved. Yet, in contrast to single-carrier systems, in multi-carrier systems, it is not possible to independently optimize RIS elements at each sub-carrier, which may reduce the benefits of RIS in multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. To this end, we investigate the effectiveness of RIS in multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM broadcast channels (BC). We formulate and solve a joint precoding and RIS optimization problem. We show that RIS can significantly improve the system performance even when the number of RIS elements per sub-band is very low.

NOMA-based Improper Signaling for MIMO STAR-RIS-assisted Broadcast Channels with Hardware Impairments

This paper proposes schemes to improve the spectral efficiency of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with I/Q imbalance (IQI) at transceivers by employing a combination of improper Gaussian signaling (IGS), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and simultaneously transmit and reflect (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). When there exists IQI, the output RF signal is a widely linear transformation of the input signal, which may make the output signal improper. To compensate for IQI, we employ IGS, thus generating a transmit improper signal. We show that IGS alongside with NOMA can highly increase the minimum rate of the users. Moreover, we propose schemes for different operational modes of STAR-RIS and show that STAR-RIS can significantly improve the system performance. Additionally, we show that IQI can highly degrade the performance especially if it is overlooked in the design.
