The magnetization-driven random field Ising model at T=0

We study the hysteretic evolution of the random field Ising model (RFIM) at T=0 when the magnetization M is controlled externally and the magnetic field H becomes the output variable. The dynamics is a simple modification of the single-spin-flip dynamics used in the H-driven situation and consists in flipping successively the spins with the largest local field. This allows to perform a detailed comparison between the microscopic trajectories followed by the system with the two protocols. Simulations are performed on random graphs with connectivity z=4 (Bethe lattice) and on the 3-D cubic lattice. The same internal energy U(M)is found with the two protocols when there is no macroscopic avalanche and it does not depend on whether the microscopic states are stable or not. On the Bethe lattice, the energy inside the macroscopic avalanche also coincides with the one that is computed analytically with the H-driven algorithm along the unstable branch of the hysteresis loop. The output field, defined here as dU/dM, exhibits very large fluctuations with the magnetization and is not self-averaging. Relation to the experimental situation is discussed.

Influence of the driving mechanism on the response of systems with athermal dynamics: the example of the random-field Ising model

We investigate the influence of the driving mechanism on the hysteretic response of systems with athermal dynamics. In the framework of local-mean field theory at finite temperature (but neglecting thermallly activated processes), we compare the rate-independent hysteresis loops obtained in the random field Ising model (RFIM) when controlling either the external magnetic field $H$ or the extensive magnetization $M$. Two distinct behaviors are observed, depending on disorder strength. At large disorder, the $H$-driven and $M$-driven protocols yield identical hysteresis loops in the thermodynamic limit. At low disorder, when the $H$-driven magnetization curve is discontinuous (due to the presence of a macroscopic avalanche), the $M$-driven loop is re-entrant while the induced field exhibits strong intermittent fluctuations and is only weakly self-averaging. The relevance of these results to the experimental observations in ferromagnetic materials, shape memory alloys, and other disordered systems is discussed.

A simple Lattice Model for hysteresis loops with exchange bias

A simple lattice model that allows hysteresis loops with exchange bias to be reproduced is presented. The model is based on the metastable Random Field Ising model, driven by an external field, with synchronous local relaxation dynamics. The key ingredient of the model is that a certain fraction $f$ of the exchange constants between neighbouring spins is enhanced to a very large value $J_E$. The model allows the dependence of several properties of the hysteresis loops to be analyzed as a function of different parameters and we have carried out an analysis of the first-order reversal curves.

Statistical properties of pinning fields in the 3d-Gaussian RFIM

We have defined pinning fields as those random fields that keep some of the magnetic moments unreversed in the region of negative external applied field during the demagnetizing process. An analysis of the statistical properties of such pinning fields is presented within the context of the Gaussian Random Field Ising Model (RFIM). We show that the average of the pinning fields exhibits a drastic increase close to the coercive field and that such an increase is discontinuous for low degrees of disorder. This behaviour can be described with standard finite size scaling (FSS) assumptions. Furthermore, we also show that the pinning fields corresponding to states close to coercivity exhibit strong statistical correlations.

Diluted 3d-Random Field Ising Model at zero temperature with metastable dynamics

We study the influence of vacancy concentration on the behaviour of the three dimensional Random Field Ising model with metastable dynamics. We focus our analysis on the number of spanning avalanches which allows for a clean determination of the critical line where the hysteresis loops change from continuous to discontinuous. By a detailed finite size scaling analysis we determine the phase diagram and prove numerically the critical exponents along the whole critical line. Finally we discuss the origin of the curvature of the critical line at high vacancy concentration.

Zero Temperature Hysteresis in Random Field Ising Model on Bethe Lattices: approach to mean field behavior with increasing coordination number z

We consider the analytic solution of the zero temperature hysteresis in the random field Ising model on a Bethe lattice of coordination number $z$, and study how it approaches the mean field solution in the limit z-> \infty. New analytical results concerning the energy of the system along the hysteresis loop and first order reversal curves (FORC diagrams) are also presented.

Exact calculation of the energy contributions to the T=0 random-field Ising model with metastable dynamics on the Bethe lattice

We analyze the energy terms corresponding to the spin-spin exchange and spin-random field coupling of the zero temperature random-field Ising model on the Bethe lattice driven by an external field with metastable dynamics. Exact results are calculated as a function of the standard deviation of the disorder and the coordination number z, and compared with numerical simulations on random graphs for z=4, for which a disorder-induced transition takes place.

Hysteresis and avalanches in the T=0 random-field Ising model with 2-spin-flip dynamics

We study the non-equilibrium behavior of the three-dimensional Gaussian random-field Ising model at T=0 in the presence of a uniform external field using a 2-spin-flip dynamics. The deterministic, history-dependent evolution of the system is compared with the one obtained with the standard 1-spin-flip dynamics used in previous studies of the model. The change in the dynamics yields a significant suppression of coercivity, but the distribution of avalanches (in number and size) stays remarkably similar, except for the largest ones that are responsible for the jump in the saturation magnetization curve at low disorder in the thermodynamic limit. By performing a finite-size scaling study, we find strong evidence that the change in the dynamics does not modify the universality class of the disorder-induced phase transition.

Driving rate effects in avalanche-mediated, first-order phase transitions

We have studied the driving rate and temperature dependence of the power-law exponents that characterize the avalanche distribution in first-order phase transitions. Measurements of acoustic emission in structural transitions in Cu-Zn-Al and Cu-Al-Ni are presented. We show how the observed behaviour emerges within a general framework of competing time scales of avalanche relaxation, driving rate, and thermal fluctuations. We have confirmed our findings by numerical simulations of a prototype model.

Spanning avalanches in the three-dimensional Gaussian Random Field Ising Model with metastable dynamics: field dependence and geometrical properties

Spanning avalanches in the 3D Gaussian Random Field Ising Model (3D-GRFIM) with metastable dynamics at T=0 have been studied. Statistical analysis of the field values for which avalanches occur has enabled a Finite-Size Scaling (FSS) study of the avalanche density to be performed. Furthermore, direct measurement of the geometrical properties of the avalanches has confirmed an earlier hypothesis that several kinds of spanning avalanches with two different fractal dimensions coexist at the critical point. We finally compare the phase diagram of the 3D-GRFIM with metastable dynamics with the same model in equilibrium at T=0.

Long range Ising model for credit risk modeling in homogeneous portfolios

Within the framework of maximum entropy principle we show that the finite-size long-range Ising model is the adequate model for the description of homogeneous credit portfolios and the computation of credit risk when default correlations between the borrowers are included. The exact analysis of the model suggest that when the correlation increases a first-order-like transition may occur inducing a sudden risk increase. Such a feature is not reproduced by the standard models used in credit risk modeling.

Statistical Mechanics in the Extended Gaussian Ensemble

The extended gaussian ensemble (EGE) is introduced as a generalization of the canonical ensemble. The new ensemble is a further extension of the Gaussian ensemble introduced by J. H. Hetherington [J. Low Temp. Phys. {\bf 66}, 145 (1987)]. The statistical mechanical formalism is derived both from the analysis of the system attached to a finite reservoir and from the Maximum Statistical Entropy Principle. The probability of each microstate depends on two parameters $β$ and $γ$ which allow to fix, independently, the mean energy of the system and the energy fluctuations respectively. We establish the Legendre transform structure for the generalized thermodynamic potential and propose a stability criterion. We also compare the EGE probability distribution with the $q$-exponential distribution. As an example, an application to a system with few independent spins is presented.

Finite Size Scaling analysis of the avalanches in the 3d Gaussian Random Field Ising Model with metastable dynamics

A numerical study is presented of the 3d Gaussian Random Field Ising Model at T=0 driven by an external field. Standard synchronous relaxation dynamics is employed to obtain the magnetization versus field hysteresis loops. The focus is on the analysis of the number and size distribution of the magnetization avalanches. They are classified as being non-spanning, 1d-spanning, 2d-spanning or 3d-spanning depending on whether or not they span the whole lattice in the different space directions. Moreover, finite-size scaling analysis enables identification of two different types of non-spanning avalanches (critical and supercritical) and two different types of 3d-spanning avalanches (critical and subcritical), whose numbers increase with L as a power-law with different exponents. We conclude by giving a scenario for the avalanches behaviour in the thermodynamic limit.

Disorder induced critical phenomena in magnetically glassy Cu-Al-Mn alloys

Measurements of magnetic hysteresis loops in Cu-Al-Mn alloys of different Mn content at low temperatures are presented. The loops are smooth and continuous above a certain temperature, but exhibit a magnetization discontinuity below that temperature. Scaling analysis suggest that this system displays a disorder induced phase transition line. Measurements allow to determine the critical exponents $β=0.03\pm 0.01$ and $βδ= 0.4 \pm 0.1$ in agreement with those reported recently [Berger et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 4176 (2000)]

Metastable Random Field Ising model with exchange enhancement: a simple model for Exchange Bias

We present a simple model that allows hysteresis loops with exchange bias to be reproduced. The model is a modification of the T=0 random field Ising model driven by an external field and with synchronous local relaxation dynamics. The main novelty of the model is that a certain fraction f of the exchange constants between neighbouring spins is enhanced to a very large value J_E. The model allows the dependence of the exchange bias and other properties of the hysteresis loops to be analyzed as a function of the parameters of the model: the fraction f of enhanced bonds, the amount of the enhancement J_E and the amount of disorder which is controlled by the width sigma of the Gaussian distribution of the random fields.

Is Tsallis thermodynamics nonextensive?

Within the Tsallis thermodynamics' framework, and using scaling properties of the entropy, we derive a generalization of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. The analysis suggests a transformation of variables that allows standard thermodynamics to be recovered. Moreover, we also generalize Einstein's formula for the probability of a fluctuation to occur by means of the maximum statistical entropy method. The use of the proposed transformation of variables also shows that fluctuations within Tsallis statistics can be mapped to those of standard statistical mechanics.
