On the athermal character of structural phase transitions

The significance of thermal fluctuations on nucleation in structural first-order phase transitions has been examined. The prototype case of martensitic transitions has been experimentally investigated by means of acoustic emission techniques. We propose a model based on the mean first-passage time to account for the experimental observations. Our study provides a unified framework to establish the conditions for isothermal and athermal transitions to be observed.

Magnetic phase separation in ordered alloys

We present a lattice model to study the equilibrium phase diagram of ordered alloys with one magnetic component that exhibits a low temperature phase separation between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The model is constructed from the experimental facts observed in Cu$_{3-x}$AlMn$_{x}$ and it includes coupling between configurational and magnetic degrees of freedom which are appropriated for reproducing the low temperature miscibility gap. The essential ingredient for the occurrence of such a coexistence region is the development of ferromagnetic order induced by the long-range atomic order of the magnetic component. A comparative study of both mean-field and Monte Carlo solutions is presented. Moreover, the model may enable the study of the structure of the ferromagnetic domains embedded in the non-magnetic matrix. This is relevant in relation to phenomena such as magnetoresistance and paramagnetism.

Hysteresis and Avalanches in the Random Anisotropy Ising Model

The behaviour of the Random Anisotropy Ising model at T=0 under local relaxation dynamics is studied. The model includes a dominant ferromagnetic interaction and assumes an infinite anisotropy at each site along local anisotropy axes which are randomly aligned. Two different random distributions of anisotropy axes have been studied. Both are characterized by a parameter that allows control of the degree of disorder in the system. By using numerical simulations we analyze the hysteresis loop properties and characterize the statistical distribution of avalanches occuring during the metastable evolution of the system driven by an external field. A disorder-induced critical point is found in which the hysteresis loop changes from displaying a typical ferromagnetic magnetization jump to a rather smooth loop exhibiting only tiny avalanches. The critical point is characterized by a set of critical exponents, which are consistent with the universal values proposed from the study of other simpler models.

Modeling Premartensitic effects in Ni2MnGa: A Mean Field and Monte Carlo Simulation Study

The degenerate Blume-Emery-Griffiths model for martensitic transformations is extended by including both structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in order to elucidate premartensitic effects. Special attention is paied to the effect of the magnetoelastic coupling in Ni2MnGa. The microscopic model is constructed and justified based on the analysis of the experimentally observed strain variables and precursor phenomena. The description includes the (local) tetragonal distortion, the amplitude of the plane-modulating strain, and the magnetization. The model is solved by means of mean-field theory and Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that a variety of premartensitic effects may appear due to the magnetoelastic coupling. For large values of the magnetoelastic coupling parameter we find a premartensitic first-order transition line ending in a critical point. This critical point is responsible for the existence of large premartensitic fluctuations which manifest as broad peaks in the specific heat, not always associated with a true phase transition. The main conclusion is that premartensitic effects result from the interplay between the softness of the anomalous phonon driving the modulation and the magnetoelastic coupling. In particular, the premartensitic transition occurs when such coupling is strong enough to freeze the involved mode phonon.

Magnetic hysteresis in the Cu-Al-Mn intermetallic alloy: experiments and modeling

We study isothermal magnetization processes in the Cu-Al-Mn intermetallic alloy. Hysteresis is observed at temperatures below the spin-freezing of the system. The characteristics of the hysteresis cycles as a function of temperature and Mn content (magnetic element) are obtained. At low temperature (5 K) a change from smooth to sharp cycles is observed with increasing Mn content, which is related to the decrease of configurational disorder. We also study a zero-temperature site-diluted Ising model, suitable for the description of this Cu-Al-Mn system. The model reproduces the main features of the hysteresis loops observed experimentally. It exhibits a disorder-induced critical line separating a disordered phase from an incipient ferromagnetic ground-state. The comparison between the model and the experiments allows to conclude that the observed change in the experimental hysteresis loops can be understood within the framework of the theory of disorder-induced criticality in fluctuationless first-order phase transitions.

Numerical signs for a transition in the 2d Random Field Ising Model at T=0

Intensive numerical studies of exact ground states of the 2-d ferromagnetic random field Ising model at T=0 with gaussian distribution of fields are presented. Standard finite size scaling analysis of the data suggests the existence of a transition at sigma_c= 0.64 +/- 0.08. Results are compared with existing theories and with the study of metastable avalanches in the same model.

Vacancy-assisted domain-growth in asymmetric binary alloys: a Monte Carlo study

A Monte Carlo simulation study of the vacancy-assisted domain-growth in asymmetric binary alloys is presented. The system is modeled using a three-state ABV Hamiltonian which includes an asymmetry term, not considered in previous works. Our simulated system is a stoichiometric two-dimensional binary alloy with a single vacancy which evolves according to the vacancy-atom exchange mechanism. We obtain that, compared to the symmetric case, the ordering process slows down dramatically. Concerning the asymptotic behavior it is algebraic and characterized by the Allen-Cahn growth exponent x=1/2. The late stages of the evolution are preceded by a transient regime strongly affected by both the temperature and the degree of asymmetry of the alloy. The results are discussed and compared to those obtained for the symmetric case.

Effect of the vacancy interaction on the antiphase domain growth process in a two dimensional binary alloy

The influence of diffusing vacancies on the antiphase domain growth process in a binary alloy is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The system is modelled by means of a Blume-Emery-Griffiths hamiltonian with a biquadratic coupling parameter K controlling the microscopic interactions between vacancies. We obtain that, independently of K, the vacancies exhibit a tendency to concentrate on the antiphase boundaries. This gives rise to an effective interactions between movin interfaces and diffusing vacancies which strongly influences the domain growth process. One distinguishes three different behaviours: i) for K<1 the growth is anisotropic and can be described by algebraic laws with exponents lower than 1/2, ii) for K=1 we find standard Allen-Cahn growth and iii) for K>1 the growth is slown down but still curvature driven.

Monte Carlo study of the growth of $L1_2$ ordered domains in fcc $A_3B$ binary alloys

A Monte Carlo study of the late time growth of $L1_2$ ordered domains on a fcc $A_3B$ binary alloy is presented. The energy of the alloy has been modeled by a nearest neighbor interaction Ising hamiltonian. The system exhibits a fourfold degenerated ground-state and two kinds of interfaces separating ordered domains: flat and curved antiphase boundaries. Two different dynamics are used in the simulations: the standard atom-atom exchange mechanism and the more realistic vacancy-atom exchange mechanism. The results obtained by both methods are compared. In particular we study the time evolution of the excess energy, the structure factor and the mean distance between walls. In the case of atom-atom exchange mechanism anisotropic growth has been found: two characteristic lengths are needed in order to describe the evolution. Contrarily, with the vacancy-atom exchange mechanism scaling with a single length holds. Results are contrasted with existing experiments in $Cu_3Au$ and theories for anisotropic growth.
