Hadronic structure on the light-front VIII. Light scalar and vector mesons

We use the QCD instanton vacuum model to discuss the emergence of the light scalar and vector mesons on the light front. We take into account both the instanton and anti-instanton single and molecular interactions on the light quarks, in the form of non-local effective interactions. Although the molecular induced interactions are suppressed by a power of the packing fraction, they are still sufficient to bind the vector mesons, while keeping most of the scalar spectrum relatively unchanged. We explicitly derive the light front distribution amplitudes (DAs) and partonic functions (PDFs) for the scalar and vector mesons, and compare them after pertinent QCD evolution, to the available empirical and lattice measured counterparts. The Dirac electric form factors for both the pion and rho meson are derived, and shown to compare well with current data.

Hadronic structure on the light-front IX . Orbital-spin-isospin wave functions of baryons

This paper which is part of a series, is devoted to several technical issues. In the first part of the paper, we discuss the usual wavefunctions in the CM frame for baryons, by clarifying the representations of the three-quark permutation group $S_3$. We extend the analysis for up to five ``spinors" with $ρ,λ$-symmetry, and derive explicitly the totally symmetric wavefunctions modulo color. They are explicitly used to describe the excited nucleons $N^*$ states, in the P- and D-shell. We also show how to use symbolic operations in Mathematica, in spin-tensor notations to make explicit these states. For the S- and P-shells, the totally antisymmetric wavefunctions are given, and the pertinent matrix elements for the spin-dependent operators calculated, including the mixing between states with different total spin $S$. In the second part of the paper we turn to the light front wavefunctions, with an emphasis on the longitudinal wavefunctions, with a novel basis set. We also discuss their symmetries under permutations, and select the proper combinations for the transverse and longitudinal excitations for $N^*$ on the light front.

Baryons and tetraquarks using instanton-induced interactions

We analyze some aspects of the perturbative and non-perturbative interactions in the composition of heavy quarkonia, heavy and light baryons ($ccc$ and $uuu$ ones), as well as all charm tetraquarks ($cc\bar c\bar c$). Using the hyper-spherical approximation and effective radial potentials (in 6 and 9 dimensions, respectively) we derive their spectra and wave functions. In all of the cases, we focus on the splittings between the s-shell levels, which are remarkably insensitive to the quark masses, but proportional to the effective interaction potentials. We use the traditional Cornell-like potentials, and the non-perturbative instanton-induced static potentials, from correlators of two, three and four Wilson lines, and find rather satisfactory description of spectra in all cases.

Hadronic structure on the light-front VII. Pions and kaons and their partonic distributions

This work is a continuation in our series of papers, that addresses quark models of hadronic structure on the light front, motivated by the QCD vacuum structure and lattice results. The spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry on the light front, is shown to parallel that in the rest frame, where the non-local instanton induced $^\prime$t Hooft interaction plays a central role. By rewriting this interaction solely in terms of the good component of the fermionic field, a scalar chiral condensate emerges in the mean-field approximation, which is identical to the one obtained in the rest frame. The pions and kaons emerge as deeply bound Goldstone modes in the chiral limit, with the scalar-isoscalar sigma meson mode as a threshold state with zero binding. We explicitly derive the light front distribution amplitudes (DAs) and partonic functions (PDFs) for these mesons. The DAs and PDFs are in good agreement with those extracted from the QCD instanton vacuum in the rest frame, using the large momentum effective theory (LaMET). The QCD evolved DAs and PDFs compare well with available measurements, as well as recent lattice results.

Hadronic structure on the light-front VI. Generalized parton distributions of unpolarized hadrons

We discuss the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for unpolarized hadrons, as a continuation of our recent work on hadronic structure on the light front. We analyze the unpolarized GPDs for the light nucleon and delta, as well as generic mesons, using the lowest Fock states. We use these GPDs to reconstruct the charge and gravitational form factors, and discuss their relative sizes. The results are also compared to reported QCD lattice results.

50 Years of Quantum Chromodynamics

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. The paper is intended to provide a broad background for Ph.D. students and postdocs starting their career. Some contributions include personal accounts of how the ideas or experiments were developed.

Mesonic "screening masses" in high temperature QCD

Lattice studies of QCD at high temperature has investigated the so called ``screening masses", corresponding to quark-antiquark states propagating in $spatial$ (rather than time) direction. Thirty years ago we pointed out that those should correspond to states of 2+1 dimensional quarkonia, and in this work we show that this correspondence provide quantitative description of the lattice data.

Meson structure on the light-front III : The Hamiltonian, heavy quarkonia, spin and orbit mixing

This is the third paper on hadronic light front wave functions (LFWFs). We derive a light front Hamiltonian from first principles using the key features of the QCD vacuum at low resolution. In the first approximation, it gives transverse oscillator and longitudinal harmonic modes and yields the correct Regge trajectories. For heavy quarkonia, we compare its spectrum to that obtained from the usual Schroedinger equation in the rest frame. We use the same approach for light quarks, and investigate the role of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in the quark-antiquark sector. We then study spin-spin and spin-orbit mixing, resulting in e.g. quadrupole moments of vector mesons. For the light mesons, we show how to extend the famed t$^\prime$Hooft interaction to the light front, which solves the U(1) problem and helps produce a light pion. We use the ensuing light front wavefunctions, to derive the pertinent parton distribution functions, parton amplitudes and low energy constants.

Hadronic structure on the light-front IV: Heavy and light Baryons

This work is a continuation in our series of papers, that addresses quark models of hadronic structure on the light front. The chief focus of this paper is the quantum-mechanical solution of the three-quark model Hamiltonian, describing baryons. In Jacobi coordinates, we use a harmonic oscillator basis for the transverse directions. For the longitudinal momentum fractions $x_i$, the pertinent basis follows from quantum mechanics in a "triangular cup" potential, which we solve exactly. We calculate the masses and light front wave functions for the flavor symmetric $\frac 32^+$ baryons $bbb, ccc, sss, uuu$.

Hadronic structure on the light-front I.\ Instanton effects and quark-antiquark effective potentials

This is the first of a sequence of papers that address the non-perturbative origin of the central, and spin-dependent forces between quarks. Its main thrust is a focus on meson spectroscopy in the center of mass frame. We suggest a "dense instanton ensemble" model for the QCD vacuum, to explain the interquark forces in mesons, from quarkonia to heavy-light and light-light ones, to the extent it is possible. The sequels will show how to export these interactions to the light front, and derive the corresponding Hamiltonians and mesonic wavefunctions.

Hadronic structure on the light-front II: QCD strings, Wilson lines and potentials

This is the second paper on hadronic wave functions in the light front formulation. We first consider only confinement effects, using the classical Nambu-Gotto string with massive end points in the light cone gauge. We derive the light-front Hamiltonian and show how to solve it, using an expansion in suitable basis functions. We next discuss the correlators of Wilson lines on the light front, leading to an effective Hamiltonian that includes spin effects. At the end, we consider a separate problem of instanton-induced interactions, at the origin of the pion as a massless Goldstone mode on the light front.

Hadronic structure on the light-front V. Diquarks, Nucleons and multiquark Fock components

This work is a continuation in our series of papers, that addresses quark models of hadronic structure on the light front, motivated by the QCD vacuum structure and lattice results. In this paper we focus on the importance of diquark correlations, which we describe by a quasi-local four-fermion effective 't Hooft interaction induced by instantons. The same interaction is also shown to generate extra quark-antiquark pair of the "sea". Its higher order iteration can be included via "pion-mediation": both taken together yield a quantitative description of the observed flavor asymmetry of antiquarks sea. Finally we discuss the final step needed to bridge the gap between hadronic spectroscopy and parton observables, by forward DGLAP evolution towards the chiral upper scale of $\sim 1\, {\rm GeV}^2$.

Correlating confinement to topological fluctuations near the crossover transition in QCD

We show the existence of strong (anti)correlations between the topological hot spots and the local values of the trace of the Polyakov loop in $2+1$ flavor QCD with physical quark mass, in the vicinity of the crossover transition corresponding to the simultaneous restoration of chiral symmetry and deconfinement. Using sophisticated lattice techniques, we have carefully identified the topological hot spots using quark zero modes and measured the short-distance fluctuations of the Polyakov loop about them, showing how the latter is repelled quite strongly around the peak of the zero modes. Though we could explain some aspects of these correlations within the instanton-dyon picture, our work sets the stage for a larger goal towards a systematic study of the role of different topological species that interact with the Polyakov loop, establishing the strong connection between topology and confinement.

Instanton effects in Euclidean vacuum, real time production and in the light front wave functions

Nontrivial topological structures of non-Abelian gauge fields were discovered in the 1970's. Instanton solutions, describing vacuum tunneling through topological barriers, have fermionic zero modes which are at the origin of $^\prime$t Hooft effective Lagrangian. In the 1980's instanton ensembles have been used to explain chiral symmetry breaking. In the 1990's a large set of numerical simulations were performed deriving Euclidean correlation functions. The special role of scalar diquarks in nucleons, and color superconductivity in dense quark matter have been elucidated. In these lectures, we discuss further developments of physics related to gauge topology. We show that the instanton-antiinstanton "streamline" configurations describe "sphaleron transitions" in high energy collisions, which result in production of hadronic clusters with nontrivial topological/chiral charges. (They are not yet observed, but discussions of dedicated experiments at LHC and RHIC are ongoing.) Another new direction is instanton effects in hadronic spectroscopy, both in the rest frame and on the light front. We will discuss their role in central and spin-dependent potentials, formfactors and antiquark nuclear "sea". Finally, we summarize the advances in the semiclassical theory of deconfinement, and chiral phase transitions at finite temperature, in QCD and in some of its "deformed" versions.

The heavy ions are "preheated" prior to hight energy collisions

The so called "isobar run" or RHIC was designed to compare a number of observables for collisions of $^{96}_{40}Zr$ with those of $^{96}_{44}Ru$, aimed at identification of $Z$-dependent effects. However, as the STAR data have shown with unprecedented accuracy, these two nuclides differ stronger than expected, producing effects larger than those depending on charge. So far, multiple studies tried to quantify their shape differences, in relation to various observables. General consensus is that these differences somehow should be related to nuclear structure, in particularly properties of the lowest excited states. Yet the precise connection between these fields -- low and high energy nuclear physics -- is still missing. In this paper I propose such a connection, via a concept of thermal density matrices of a "preheated" nuclei. The effective temperature should parameterize which set of excited states should be included in the calculations. I also suggest semiclassical "flucton" method at finite temperatures to be used to calculate thermal density matrices.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Confinement from an Interacting Ensemble of Instanton-dyons in Two-flavor Massless QCD

In this work we present the results from numerical simulations of an interacting ensemble of instanton-dyons in the $SU(3)$ gauge group with $N_f=2$ flavors of massless quarks. Dynamical quarks are included via the effective interactions induced by the fermionic determinant evaluated in the subspace of topological zero modes. The eigenvalue spectrum of the Dirac operator is studied at different volumes to extract the chiral condensate and eigenvalue gap, with both observables providing consistent values of the chiral transition temperature $T_c$. We find that a sufficient density of dyons is responsible for generating the confining potential and breaking the chiral symmetry, both of which are compatible with second-order transitions.

How to observe the QCD instanton/sphaleron processes at hadron colliders?

The instanton/sphaleron processes involve gauge fields with changing topology through a nonzero variation of the Chern-Simons number $δN_{CS}=\pm 1$. In QCD this leads to the production of $2N_f δN_{CS}$ units of axial charge, and in the electroweak theory to the production of 12 fermions, with $ΔB=δL=3$ units of baryon and lepton number, a key mechanism in baryogenesis. While this is all known for a long time, and is one of the pillars of the nonperturbative theory of the QCD vacuum, to see these phenomena directly in colliders remains an unfulfilled promise. Motivated by the recent CERN workshop on the topic, we review the field. We also put forward our own suggestions to utilize double-diffractive (or Pomeron-Pomeron) collisions to this goal, which maximizes the entrance factor and minimizes the backgrounds. We consider separately clusters of small ($M=3-10\, {\rm GeV}$), medium ($10-30\, {\rm GeV}$) and high $M\sim 100 \, {\rm GeV}$ invariant masses. Among the proposed signals are specific flavor combination of channels, originating from well-defined 6-, 8- and 10-quark-antiquark operators, as well as correlation of quark chiralities to be potentially detected via $Λ$ hyperon decays.

Nucleon clustering at kinetic freezeout of heavy-ion collisions via path-integral Monte Carlo

Clustering of the four-nucleon system at kinetic freezeout conditions is studied using path-integral Monte Carlo techniques. This method seeks to improve upon previous calculations which relied on approximate semiclassical methods or few-body quantum mechanics. Estimates are given for the decay probabilities of the 4N system into various light nuclei decay channels and the strength of spatial correlations is characterized. Additionally, a simple model is presented to describe the impact of this clustering on nucleon multiplicity distributions. The effects of a possible modification of the inter-nucleon interaction due to the close critical line (and hypothetical QCD critical point) on the clustering are also studied.
