Deconfinement Phase Transition in the $SU(3)$ Instanton-dyon Ensemble

Confinement remains one the most interesting and challenging nonperturbative phenomenon in non-Abelian gauge theories. Recent semiclassical (for SU(2)) and lattice (for QCD) studies have suggested that confinement arises from interactions of statistical ensembles of instanton-dyons with the Polyakov loop. In this work, we extend studies of semiclassical ensemble of dyons to the $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory. We find that such interactions do generate the expected first-order deconfinement phase transition. The properties of the ensemble, including correlations and topological susceptibility, are studied over a range of temperatures above and below $T_c$. Additionally, the dyon ensemble is studied in the Yang-Mills theory containing an extra trace-deformation term. It is shown that such a term can cause the theory to remain confined and even retain the same topological observables at high temperatures.

Many-body forces and nucleon clustering near the QCD critical point

It has been proposed that one can look for the QCD critical point (CP) by the Beam Energy Scan (BES) accurately monitoring event-by-event fluctuations. This experimental program is under way at the BNL RHIC collider. Separately, it has been studied how clustering of nucleons at freezeout affects proton multiplicity distribution and light nuclei production. It was found that even a minor increase of the range of nuclear forces dramatically increases clustering, while large correlation length $ξ$ near CP makes attraction due to binary forces unrealistically large. In this paper we show that repulsive many-body forces near CP should overcome the binary ones and effectively suppress clustering. We also discuss current experimental data and point out locations at which a certain drop in clustering may already be observed.

Nonperturbative quark-antiquark interactions in mesonic form factors

The existing theory of hard exclusive QCD processes is based on two assumptions: (i) $factorization$ into a $hard\,block$ times light front distribution amplitudes (DA's); (ii) use of perturbative gluon exchanges within the hard block. However, unlike DIS and jet physics, the characteristic momentum transfer $Q$ involved in the factorized block is not large enough for this theory to be phenomenologically successful. In this work, we revisit the latter assumption (ii), by explicitly calculating the $instanton-induced$ contributions to the hard block, and show that they contribute substantially to the vector, scalar and gravitational form factors of the pseudoscalar, scalar and vector mesons, over a wide range of momentum transfer.

Light-nuclei production and search for the QCD critical point

We discuss the potential of light-nuclei measurement in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies for the search of the hypothetical QCD critical end-point. A previous proposal based on neutron density fluctuations has brought appealing experimental evidences of a maximum in a ratio involving tritons, protons and deuterons, ${\cal O}_{tpd}$. However these results are difficult to reconcile with the state-of-the-art statistical thermal model predictions. Based on the idea that the QCD critical point can lead to a substantial attraction among nucleons, we propose new ratios involving $^4$He in which the maximum would be more evident. We argue that the experimental extraction is feasible by presenting actual measurements at low and high collision energies. We also illustrate the possible behavior of these ratios at intermediate energies applying the semiclassical method based on flucton paths using preliminary STAR data for ${\cal O}_{tpd}$.

Baryon preclustering at the freeze-out of heavy-ion collisions and light-nuclei production

Following the idea of nucleon clustering and light-nuclei production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions close to the QCD critical-end point, we address the quantum effects affecting the interaction of several nucleons at finite temperature. For this aim we use the $K$-harmonics method to four-nucleon states ($α$ particle), and also develop a novel semiclassical "flucton" method at finite temperature, based on certain classical paths in Euclidean time, and apply it to two- and four-particle configurations. To study possible effects on the light-nuclei production close to the QCD critical point, we also made such calculations with modified internuclear potentials. For heavy-ion experiments, we propose new measurements of light-nuclei multiplicity ratios which may show enhancements due to baryon preclustering. We point out the special role of the $\mathcal{O}(50)$ four-nucleon excitations of $α$-particle, feeding into the final multiplicities of $d,t$, $^3$He and $^4$He, and propose to directly look for their two-body decays.

Lectures on nonperturbative QCD ( Nonperturbative Topological Phenomena in QCD and Related Theories)

These are lecture notes, which summarize the current status of the Semiclassical theory, as well as Monopoles, Instantons, Instanton-dyons and Flux tubes. The emphasis is on QCD and QCD-like theories (deformed QCD), although relevant points derived in Supersymmetric theories are also covered. While the actual lectures on which the notes are based were delivered in the fall 2018, the text evolved over the years and summarizes about 4 decades of development. One recent point added is the so called Poisson duality between monopoles and instanton-dyon approaches. It is made in a book format, with extensive list of references. Large size of the text have lead to many imperfections, which I hope to correct in future versions.

Baryogenesis and helical magnetogenesis from the electroweak transition of the minimal Standard Model

We start by considering the production rates of sphalerons with different size $ρ$ in the symmetric phase, $T>T_{EW}$. At small $ρ$, the distribution is cut off by the growing mass $M\sim 1/ρ$, and at large $ρ$ by the magnetic screening mass. In the broken phase, $T<T_{EW}$ the scale is set by the Higgs VEV $v(T)$. We introduce the concept of "Sphaleron freezeout" whereby the sphaleron production rate matches the Hubble Universe expansion rate. At freezeout the sphalerons are out of equilibrium. Sphaleron explosions generate sound and even gravity waves, when nonzero Weinberg angle make them non-spherical. We revisit CP violation during the sphaleron explosions. We assess its magnitude using the Standard Model CKM quark matrix, first for nonzero and then zero Dirac eigenstates. We find that its magnitude is maximal at the sphaleron freezeout condition with $T\approx 130\, GeV$. We proceed to estimate the amount of CP violation needed to generate the observed magnitude of baryon asymmetry of Universe. The result is about an order of magnitude below our CKM-based estimates. We also relate the baryon asymmetry to the generation of $U(1)$ magnetic chirality, which is expected to be conserved and perhaps visible in polarized intergalactic magnetic fields.

Towards a semi-classical description of QCD vacuum around $T_c$

We study the vacuum topology of 2+1 flavor QCD above the chiral crossover transition, at $T \lesssim 1.2~T_c$, on lattices of size $32^3\times 8$. Since overlap fermions have exact chiral symmetry and an index theorem even on a finite lattice, we use them to detect the topological content of gauge fields generated using domain wall fermion discretization for quarks. We further use different periodicity phases along the temporal direction for the valence overlap quarks, which allows us to probe different topological structures present in the gauge field ensembles, through its zero modes. This procedure provides strong evidences that fermion zero-modes can be quantitatively understood to arise due to different species of instanton-dyons. We estimate their relative abundances from the Dirac-eigenvalue density and resolve the so called "topological clusters" via multi-parameter fits to their density, providing therefore an understanding of the interactions between instanton-dyons. The typical separation between dyons we obtain, is $\sim 0.3$ fm. Surprisingly, it emerges out from this study that a semi-classical description of the fermionic zero modes in the QCD vacuum is quite accurate just above $T_c$.

Light-front wave functions of mesons, baryons and pentaquarks, with topology-induced local 4-quark interaction

We calculate light-front wave functions of mesons, baryons and pentaquarks in a model including constituent mass (representing chiral symmetry breaking), harmonic confining potential, and 4-quark local interaction of 't Hooft type. The model is a simplified version of that used by Jia and Vary. The method used is numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix, with certain functional basis. We found that the nucleon wave function displays strong diquar correlations, unlike that for Delta (decuplet) baryon. We also calculate 3-quark-5-quark admixture to baryons, and the resulting antiquark sea PDF.

Nuclear correlations and modifications of the nucleon-nucleon potential due to the QCD critical mode

The scalar-isoscalar mode of QCD becomes lighter/nearly massless close to the chiral transition/second-order critical point. From nuclear physics we know that this mode is the main responsible for the attractive part of the nucleon-nucleon potential at inter-particle distances of 1-2 fm. Therefore one expects that close to the critical point there is a long-range strong attraction among nucleons. Using a Walecka-Serot model for the NN potential we study the effects of the critical point in a finite system of nucleons and mesons by solving classical Molecular Dynamics+Langevin equations for the freeze-out conditions of heavy-ion collisions. Going beyond the mean-field approximation allows us to account for strong nucleon correlations in the time evolution, leading to baryon clustering. We observe that light cluster formation, together with an enhancement of higher-order cumulants of the proton distribution can signal the presence of the critical point.

Comments on "Three regimes of QCD" by L.Glozman

There are no "three regimes of QCD", as speculated in that paper. There are only two, separated by already well known $T_c\sim 155\, MeV$. Above it electric interactions are screened rather then confined. Magnetic ones remain confined all the way to $T\rightarrow \infty$. Spectrum of "mesonic screening masses" is there, but they do not represent real masses. At high $T$ they correspond to "heavy quarkonia" of 2+1 d gauge theory, which is well known to be a confining theory. There is no reason to expect any transition unbinding them, at $T\sim 1\, GeV$ as claimed. I make calculation of correction to screening masses in 2+1d at high temperature including spatial screening tension and find results in agreement with recent lattice data.

The topological objects near the chiral crossover transition in QCD

We study the underlying topology of gauge fields in 2+1 flavor QCD with domain wall fermions on lattices of size $32^3\times 8$, at and immediately above the chiral crossover transition. Using valence overlap fermions with exact index theorem, we focus on its zero modes for different choices of periodicity phases along the temporal direction. Our studies show that the zero modes are due to fractionally charged topological objects, the instanton-dyons. We further provide qualitative study of the interactions between those and compare with the available semi-classical results, finding remarkably accurate agreement in all cases.

Extending the hydrodynamical description of heavy-ion collisions to the "outer edge" of the fireball

It is well known that relativistic hydrodynamics provides very good description of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC/LHC energies up to transverse momenta $p_\perp\sim 2\, \text{GeV}$. In this paper, we suggest that this description can be extended to higher $p_\perp\sim 6\, \text{GeV}$, beyond which hard collisions contribute. While most previous work focused on a part of the freezeout surface at the latest proper time (referred to in this work as the "lid"), we focus on the complementary part, to be referred as "the outer edge," where the highest transverse rapidity of flow $κ\sim 1.4$ is achieved. We study this surface analytically, using the Riemann rarefaction wave, and numerically, using MUSIC numerical hydrodynamic code. We also use an improved freezeout condition, where the collision rate equals the expansion rate. For central collisions, we observe good description of spectra for $π,K,N$ in central PbPb LHC collisions in this extended region. We further suggest that "the outer edge" has very small azimuthal asymmetry even for non-central collisions, smaller than predicted by standard hydrodynamics.

Baryon clustering at the critical line and near the hypothetical critical point in heavy-ion collisions

We study clustering of baryons at the freeze-out point of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Using a Walecka-Serot model for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction we analyze how the modified/critical $σ$ mode---responsible for the NN attraction---allows for clustering of nucleons when the system is close to a possible critical point of QCD. We investigate clusters of few nucleons, and also the internal cluster configuration when the system is long lived. For realistic heavy-ion collisions we study to how extend such clusters can be formed in a finite time, and perform the statistical analysis of cumulants and higher-order moments (skewness and kurtosis) for collisions at the Beam Energy Scan of RHIC.

Trans-series for the ground state density and Generalized Bloch equation

Based on Generalized Bloch equation the trans-series expansion for the phase (exponent) of the ground state density for double-well potential is constructed. It is shown that the leading and next-to-leading semiclassical terms are still defined by the flucton trajectory (its classical action) and quadratic fluctuations (the determinant), respectively, while the the next-to-next-to-leading correction (at large distances) is of non-perturbative nature. It comes from the fact that all flucton plus multi-instanton, instanton-anti-instanton classical trajectories lead to the same classical action behavior at large distances! This correction is proportional to sum of all leading instanton contributions to energy gap.

Are there flux tubes in quark-gluon plasma?

We review both lattice evidences and theoretical arguments supporting the existence of electric flux tubes in quark-gluon plasma, above the deconfinement transition temperature $T>T_c$. At the end of this comment, we also point out certain questions which still needs to be answered.

Dense Instanton-Dyon Liquid Model: Diagrammatics

We revisit the instanton-dyon liquid model in the confined phase by using a non-linear Debye-Huckel (DH) resummation for the Coulomb interactions induced by the moduli, followed by a cluster expansion. The organization is shown to rapidly converge and yields center symmetry at high density. The dependence of these results on a finite vacuum angle are also discussed. We also formulate the hypernetted chain (HCN) resummation for the dense instanton-dyon liquid and use it to estimate the liquid pair correlation functions in the DH limit. At very low temperature, the dense limit interpolates between chains and rings of instanton-anti-instanton-dyons and a bcc crystal, with strong topological and magnetic correlations.

Comments on the SU(4) dark matter

We discuss possible scale of $SU(4)$ dark matter, in form of neutral baryons. We argue that it is very likely that those would have time to cluster into large "nuclear drops" in which they are Bose-condensed.
