The quark-antiquark spectrum from upside down

We argue that the spectra of quark-antiquark systems should better be studied from higher radial excitations and, in particular, from configurations with well-defined quantum numbers, rather than from ground states and lower radial excitations, the most suitable system being charmonium.

Light and heavy at the end of the funnel

We show that, by taking a bare mass spectrum with constant spacings for the quark-antiquark propagators, which is subject to considerable mass shifts from meson loops, one adequately describes a large variety of mesonic resonances, from the light scalars to the b-bbar states. All our results indicate that a harmonic-oscilator spectrum with universal frequency, in combination with coupled-channel effects, does a much better job than the q-barq spectrum of the funnel potential.

Complex masses in the S-matrix

Most excited hadrons have multiparticle strong decay modes, which can often be described as resulting from intermediate states containing one or two resonances. In a theoretical approach, such a description in terms of quasi-two-particle initial and final states leads to unitarity violations, because of the complex masses of the involved resonances. In the present paper, an empirical algebraic procedure is presented to restore unitarity of the S-matrix while preserving its symmetry. Preliminary results are presented in a first application to S-wave pion-pion scattering, in the framework of the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion.

A very broad X(4260) and the resonance parameters of the 3D vector charmonium state

We argue that the X(4260) enhancement contains a wealth of information on vector c-cbar spectroscopy. We discuss the shape of the X(4260) observed in the OZI-forbidden process "electron-positron into J/psi and a pair of charged pions", in particular at and near vector charmonium resonances as well as open-charm threshold enhancements. The resulting very broad X(4260) structure does not seem to classify itself as a vector charmonium resonance, but its detailed shape allows to identify new vector c-cbar states. Here, we estimate the resonance parameters of the psi(3D) state.

Evidence for further charmonium vector resonances

We discuss the shape of threshold signals in production cross sections of the reaction e+ + e- --> D* + antiD*, at the opening of the D(s)* antiD(s)* and Lambda(c)+ Lambda(c)- channels. Furthermore, evidence for the 3D, 5S, 4D, 6S, 5D, 7S, 6D, and 8S charmonium vector resonances is presented, on the basis of data recently published by the BaBar Collaboration. Central masses and resonance widths are estimated. Confirmation of these resonances would be a huge step in lifting the precision level of hadron spectroscopy towards that of atomic spectroscopy, with far-reaching consequences for theory.

Multichannel calculation of excited vector $ϕ$ resonances and the $ϕ(2170)$

A multichannel calculation of excited $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ $ϕ$ states is carried out within a generalization of the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion, which may shed light on the classification of the $ϕ(2170)$ resonance, discovered by BABAR and originally denoted X(2175). In this framework, a complete spectrum of bare $s\bar{s}$ states is coupled to those OZI-allowed decay channels that should be most relevant for the considered energy range. The included $S$- and $P$-wave two-meson channels comprise the lowest pseudoscalar, vector, scalar, and axial-vector mesons, while in the $q\bar{q}$ sector both the $^{3}S_1$ and $^{3}D_1$ states are coupled. The only two free parameters are tuned so as to reproduce mass and width of the $ϕ(1020)$, but come out reasonably close to previously used values. Among the model's $T$-matrix poles, there are good candidates for observed resonances, as well other ones that should exist according to the quark model. Besides the expected resonances as unitarized confinement states, a dynamical resonance pole is found at $(2186-i246)$ MeV. The huge width makes its interpretation as the $ϕ(2170)$ somewhat dubious, but further improvements of the model may change this conclusion.

Mass and width of the Upsilon(4S)

Recent data on e(-)+e(+)-->b+anti-b by the BABAR Collaboration [B. Aubert et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 012001 (2009), arXiv:0809.4120] in the energy range delimited by the B+anti-B and Lambda(b)(+)+Lambda(b)(-) thresholds are analyzed in a multichannel formalism that incorporates the usual Breit-Wigner resonances, but interfering with a background signal due to the opening of open-bottom thresholds. In particular, the Upsilon(4S) resonance is determined to have a mass of 10.735 GeV and a width of 38 MeV. Also two higher Upsilon resonances are identified, parametrized, and classified. Moreover, it is found that near the B+anti-B threshold open-bottom production in electron-positron annihilation is dominated by the reaction chain e(-)+e(+)-->n+anti-n-->B+anti-B (n=u/d) rather than e(-)+e(+)-->b+anti-b-->B+anti-B whereas near the B(s)+anti-B(s) threshold the reaction chain e(-)+e(+)-->s+anti-s-->B+anti-B dominates the production amplitude. The vital role played in this analysis by the universal confinement frequency, defined in 1980 [E. van Beveren, C. Dullemond, and G. Rupp, Phys. Rev. D21, 772 (1980)] and accurately determined in 1983 [E. van Beveren, G. Rupp, T.A. Rijken, and C. Dullemond, Phys. Rev. D27, 1527 (1983)], is further confirmed.

Comment on "Study of D(sJ) decays to D(*)K in inclusive e(+)e(-) interactions"

We comment on the recent observation of the decay mode D(sJ)(*)(2860)-->D(*)K by the BABAR Collaboration [arXiv:0908.0806], and contest their peremptory conclusion that the data exclude a 0(+) assignment for the D(sJ)(*)(2860). In particular, we argue that the observed branching fraction B(D(sJ)(*)(2860)-->D(*)K)/B(D(sJ)(*)(2860)-->DK)=1.1 pm 0.15 pm 0.19 supports the existence of two largely overlapping resonances at about 2.86 GeV, namely a pair of radially excited tensor 2(+) and scalar 0(+) c-sbar states. This scenario is further justified by comparing with the corresponding excited charmonium states. Also other aspects of the charm-strange spectrum are discussed.

Production of hadron pairs in electron-positron annihilation near the K(+)K(-), D-Dbar, B-Bbar and Lambda(c)(+)-Lambda(c)(-) thresholds

We study the structures in cross sections and R ratios concerning electron-positron annihilation reactions, for open-strangeness, open-charm and open-beauty hadron-pair production, from the perspective of a recently developed production formalism. Special attention is paid to non-resonant contributions. Known, tentative, and yet unknown resonances are spotted, with estimates for their masses and widths.

The Y(4140), X(4260), psi(2D), psi(4S) and tentative psi(3D)

Data on B+ --> J/psi phi K+ and the Y(4140) enhancement recently reported by the CDF collaboration [arxiv:0903.2229] are analysed. The threshold behaviour, as well as traces of the X(4260) enhancement, the known c-cbar resonances psi(2D), psi(4S), and a tentative psi(3D) state, as observed in the mass distribution, suggest that the J/psi+phi system has quantum numbers JPC=1--. It is then argued that the Y(4140) enhancement does not represent any kind of resonance, but instead is a natural consequence of the opening of the J/psi+phi channel.

Light and Not So Light Scalar Mesons

A multichannel description of the light scalar mesons in the framework of the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion is generalised by including vector-vector and scalar-scalar channels, besides the usual pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar channels. Experimental data for the isoscalar, isodoublet and isovector cases are fitted up to energies well above 1 GeV. The resulting pole positions of the light and intermediate scalar mesons are compared to the listed resonances. Possible further improvements are discussed.

Interference effects in the X(4260) signal

We show that the long known puzzling branching ratios of open-charm decays in electron-positron annihilation can be reasonably described with a simple form factor, which strongly suppresses open channels far above threshold. Application to the electron-positron annihilation into J/psi+pion+pion data on the X(4260) enhancement recently reported by the BABAR Collaboration [arxiv:0808.1543] allows a good fit with a simple nonresonant cusp structure around the D(*)(s)+Dbar(*)(s) threshold. Moreover, we argue that a closer look at the data reveals an oscillatory pattern, which we model as an interference effect between a fast - OZI-allowed - and a slow - OZI-forbidden - J/psi+f(0)(980) mode. Other candidates for similar nonresonant enhancements are discussed.

The X(4260) and possible confirmation of psi(3D), psi(5S), psi(4D), psi(6S) and psi(5D) in J/psi pi+ pi-

Data on e+ e- --> J/psi pi+ pi- and the X(4260) enhancement by the BABAR collaboration [ arXiv:hep-ex/0506081, arXiv:0808.1543 ] are analysed by modelling missing signals that should be present in the complete production amplitude with vector quantum numbers in the charmonium region. Thus, it is shown that the data contain evidence for the existence of the psi(5S), the psi(4D), the psi(6S) and the psi(5D) c-cbar vector states, and furthermore a clear indication for the mass and width of the psi(3D). Moreover, it is shown that signs of the psi(3S), psi(2D) and psi(4S) can be observed in the same data. Finally, it is argued that the X(4260) enhancement is not a resonance, but rather a phenomenon connected with the opening of the D(s)(*)-Dbar(s)(*) threshold and the coupling to the J/psi f(0)(980) channel.

Possible psi(5S), psi(4D), psi(6S) and psi(5D) signals in Lambda(c)-antiLambda(c)

It is shown that the Lambda(c+)-Lambda(c-) signal recently reported by the Belle Collaboration (ARXIV:0807.4458) contains clear signs of the psi(5S) and the psi(4D) c-cbar vector states, and also some indication for the masses and widths of the psi(6S) and psi(5D). Moreover, it is argued that the threshold behaviour of the Lambda(c+)-antiLambda(c-) cross sections suggests the presence of the hitherto undetected psi(3D) state not far below the Lambda(c+)-Lambda(c-) threshold.

Multichannel Description of Light and Intermediate Scalar Mesons

The light scalar mesons in a variety of approaches are briefly reviewed, as well as their description in the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion and related coupled-channel formalisms. A recent multichannel modelling of the light scalars is extended to higher energies and with additional decay channels, allowing to make predictions for the intermediate scalar mesons as well. Prospects for further improvements are discussed. PACS numbers: 14.40.Cs, 14.40.Ev, 11.80.Gw, 11.55.Ds, 13.75.Lb

Comment on "Two-photon decay of the sigma meson"

We comment on a recent paper by Giacosa, Gutsche, and Lyobovitskij, in which it is argued that a quarkonium interpretation of the $σ$ meson should give rise to a much smaller two-photon decay width than commonly assumed. The reason for this claimed discrepancy is a term in the transition amplitude, necessary for gauge invariance, which allegedly is often omitted in the literature, including the work of the present authors. Here we show their claims to be incorrect by demonstrating, in the context of the Quark-Level Linear $σ$ Model, that the recently extracted experimental value $Γ_{σ\to2γ}=(4.1\pm0.3)$ keV is compatible with a $q\bar{q}$ assignment for the $σ$, provided that meson loops are taken into account as well.
