The spectrum of charmonium in the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion

We argue that the resonance-like structures Y(4260) (arXiv:hep-ex/0506081,arXiv:0707.2541), Y(4360), Y(4660) (arXiv:0707.3699) and Y(4635) (arXiv:0807.4458), which were recently reported to have been observed in experiment, are non-resonant manifestations of the Regge zeros that appear in the production amplitude of the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion. Charmonium c-cbar states are visible on the slopes of these enhancements.

Meson-meson interactions and Regge propagators

By a reformulation of the loop expansion in the Resonance-Spectrum-Expansion amplitude for meson-meson scattering, in terms of s-channel exchange of families of propagator modes, we obtain a formalism which allows for a wider range of applications. The connection with the unitarized amplitudes employed in some chiral theories is discussed. We also define an alternative for the Regge spectra and indicate how this may be observed in experiment.

Deducing the string-breaking distance in strong production processes

We show that the string-breaking distance can be read from meson-production data, by employing a previously derived expression for the production amplitude. Accordingly, we find that the radii of 0.67, 0.34 and 0.20 fm for the creation of non-strange q-qbar pairs obtained in the Resonance-Spectrum-Expansion model, for light-quark, c-cbar, and b-bbar environments, respectively, are in perfect agreement with S-wave di-pion production data, upon employing an ansatz with no additional free parameters.

Why the Pennington-Wilson expansion with real coefficients is of little use in the analysis of production processes

We critically analyse and comment on the claims of M. R. Pennington and D. J. Wilson [arxiv:0711.3521]. Although we generally agree with their obvious algebra, it is clearly not applicable to our equations. Moreover, we argue that the corresponding proposal is not useful for production-data analysis. The advantages of our approach, which involves complex yet purely kinematical coefficients, are summarised.

The complex relation between production and scattering amplitudes

The unitarity relation, Im(A)=T* A, is derived for a three-body production amplitude, A, that consists of a complex linear combination of elements of the two-body scattering amplitude, T. We conclude that the unitarity relation does not impose a realness condition on the coefficients in the expansion of, A, in terms of, T.

How we discovered the nonet of light scalar mesons

As has been confirmed meanwhile by lattice-QCD calculations (see e.g. hep-lat/0702023), the confinement spectrum of non-exotic quark-antiquark systems has its ground state for scalar mesons well above 1 GeV in the Resonance Spectrum Expansion (RSE). For instance, in the S-wave Kaon-pion RSE amplitude, a broad resonance was predicted slightly above 1.4 GeV [hep-ex/0106077], which is confirmed by experiment as the K*0(1430). However, a complete nonet of light scalar mesons was predicted (Zeit.Phys.C30,615 [http://www-spires.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/hep?key=1573454]) as well, when a model strongly related to the RSE and initially developed to describe the heavy quarkonia resonance spectra (Phys.Rev.D21,772 [http://www-spires.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/hep?key=363162]) was applied in the light-quark sector. Thus, it was found that the light scalar-meson nonet constitutes part of the ordinary meson spectrum, albeit represented by "extraordinary" [hep-ph/0701038] poles [hep-ex/0106077]. Similar resonances and bound states appear in the charmed sector [hep-ph/0305035], and are predicted in the B-meson spectrum [hep-ph/0312078, hep-ph/0406242]. A recent work [hep-ph/0703286] confirmed the presence of light scalar-meson poles in the RSE amplitude for S-wave and P-wave pion-pion and Kaon-pion contributions to three-body decay processes measured by the BES, E791 and FOCUS collaborations.

Relating multichannel scattering and production amplitudes in a microscopic OZI-based model

Relations between scattering and production amplitudes are studied in a microscopic multichannel model for meson-meson scattering, with coupling to confined quark-antiquark channels. Overlapping resonances and a proper threshold behaviour are treated exactly in the model. Under the spectator assumption, it is found that the two-particle production amplitude shares a common denominator with the elastic scattering amplitude, besides a numerator consisting of a linear combination of all elastic and some inelastic matrix elements. The coefficients in these linear combinations are shown to be generally complex. Finally, the standard operator expressions relating production and scattering amplitudes, viz. A=T/V and Im(A)=T*A, are fulfilled, while in the small-coupling limit the usual isobar model is recovered.

S-wave and P-wave pion-pion and kaon-pion contributions to three-body decay processes in the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion

We study S- and P-wave pion-pion and kaon-pion distributions for the three-body production processes $J/ψ\toωπ^{+}π^{-}$, $D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}$, $D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{+}π^{-}$, and $D^{+}_{s}\to K^{+}π^{+}π^{-}$, by applying the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion to the two-body subamplitudes. The results are compared to the corresponding signals reported by the BES, E791 and FOCUS collaborations. We find that the studied S- and P-wave channels can largely account for the observed structures in the data up to 1 GeV.

Scalar and axial-vector mesons

Nowadays, there exists an abundance of theoretical approaches towards the mesonic spectrum, ranging from confinement models of all kinds, i.e., glueballs, and quark-antiquark, multiquark and hybrid configurations, to models in which only mesonic degrees of freedom are taken into account. Nature seems to come out somewhere in the middle, neither preferring pure bound states, nor effective meson-meson physics with only coupling constants and possibly form factors. As a matter of fact, apart from a few exceptions, like pions and kaons, Nature does not allow us to study mesonic bound states of any kind, which is equivalent to saying that such states do not really exist. Hence, instead of extrapolating from pions and kaons to the remainder of the meson family, it is more democratic to consider pions and kaons mesonic resonances that happen to come out below the lowest threshold for strong decay. Nevertheless, confinement is an important ingredient for understanding the many regularities observed in mesonic spectra. Therefore, excluding quark degrees of freedom is also not the most obvious way of describing mesons in general, and scalars and axial-vectors in particular.

Pion-pion scattering near threshold in the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion

We study the properties of the Resonance-Spectrum Expansion near threshold in I=0 S-wave pion-pion scattering. The real part of the amplitude, when extrapolated from above threshold to below threshold, is found to vanish at a positive non-zero value of the total invariant mass of the system, in agreement with predictions from perturbative chiral models. In our exact analytic expression, the total amplitude vanishes identically at zero invariant mass.

Multichannel calculation of the very narrow $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and the very broad $D_0^*(2300-2400)$

The narrow $D_{s0}^{\ast}$(2317) and broad $D_0^{\ast}$(2300-2400) charmed scalar mesons and their radial excitations are described in a coupled-channel quark model that also reproduces the properties of the light scalar nonet. All two-meson channels containing ground-state pseudoscalars and vectors are included. The parameters are chosen fixed at published values, except for the overall coupling constant $λ$, which is fine-tuned to reproduce the $D_{s0}^{\ast}$(2317) mass, and a damping constant $α$ for subthreshold contributions. Variations of $λ$ and $D_0^{\ast}$(2300-2400) pole postions are studied for different $α$ values. Calculated cross sections for $S$-wave $DK$ and $Dπ$ scattering, as well as resonance pole positions, are given for the value of $α$ that fits the light scalars. The thus predicted radially excited state ${D_{s0}^*}'$(2850), with a width of about 50 MeV, seems to have been observed already.

D_{sJ}(2860) as the first radial excitation of the D_{s0}^*(2317)

A coupled-channel model previously employed to describe the narrow $D_{s0}^*$(2317) and broad $D_0^*$(2400) charmed scalar mesons is generalized so as to include all ground-state pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar and vector-vector two-meson channels. All parameters are chosen fixed at published values, except for the overall coupling constant, which is fine-tuned to reproduce the $D_{s0}^*$(2317) mass. Thus, the radial excitations $D_{s0}^*$(2850) and $D_0^*$(2740) are predicted, both with a width of about 50 MeV. The former state appears to correspond to the new $D_{sJ}$(2860) resonance decaying to $DK$ announced by BABAR in the course of this work. Also the $D_0^*$(2400) resonance is roughly reproduced, though perhaps with a somewhat too low central resonance peak.

Is the Y(4260) just a coupled-channel signal?

The Ds-Ds*, D*-D*, and Ds*-Ds*, P-wave channels in the energy region of the Y(4260) charmonium structure are studied in a coupled-channel model applied to JPC=1-- c-cbar resonances. The three channels exhibit enhancements that peak at 4.27 GeV, 4.26 GeV, and 4.33 GeV, respectively, having widths ranging from 80 to 200 MeV. However, no S-matrix poles are found, other than those associated with the psi(2D,4160) and psi(4S,4415). The conclusion is that the observed Y(4260) signal(s) in pi-pi J/psi is (are) probably associated with the opening of the aforementioned channels, resulting in a resonance-like structure caused by the tail of the psi(3S,4040) resonance, roughly midway between the mentioned P-wave thresholds and a sharp kinematical minimum at about 4.4 GeV present in both the experimental and the model scattering amplitude.

Recoupling matrix elements and decay

Recoupling matrix elements are evaluated, in the harmonic oscillator approximation, for all possible angular and radial excitations in processes where quarks recombine. A diagrammatic representation is given. Their use is demonstrated in calculating the transition potential for rho to two pions in a pair creation model.

Images in Christmas Balls

We describe light-reflection properties of spherically curved mirrors, like balls in the Christmas tree. In particular, we study the position of the image which is formed somewhere beyond the surface of a spherical mirror, when an eye observes the image of a pointlike light source. The considered problem, originally posed by Abu Ali Hasan Ibn al-Haitham -- alias Alhazen -- more than a millennium ago, turned out to have the now well known analytic solution of a biquadratic equation, being still of great relevance, e.g. for the aberration-free construction of telescopes. We do not attempt to perform an exhaustive survey of the rich historical and engineering literature on the subject, but develop a simple pedagogical approach to the issue, which we believe to be of continuing interest in view of its maltreating in many high-school textbooks.
