Massive Scalar Field Perturbations of Black Holes Immersed in Chaplygin-Like Dark Fluid

We consider massive scalar field perturbations in the background of black holes immersed in Chaplygin-like dark fluid (CDF), and we analyze the photon sphere modes, the de Sitter modes as well as the near extremal modes and discuss their dominance, by using the pseudospectral Chebyshev method and the third order Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. We also discuss the impact of the parameter representing the intensity of the CDF on the families of quasinormal modes. Mainly, we find that the propagation of a massive scalar field is stable in this background, and it is characterized by quasinormal frequencies with a smaller oscillation frequency and a longer decay time compared to the propagation of the same massive scalar field within the Schwarzschild-de Sitter background.

Quasinormal modes and bound states of massive scalar fields in wormhole spacetimes

In this work we explore the propagation of massive scalar fields on some wormhole backgrounds. On one side, we consider the Bronnikov-Ellis wormhole solution and wormhole geometries with a non-constant redshift function by introducing a gravitational mass $M$, which goes over into the Bronnikov-Ellis wormhole when the gravitational mass parameter vanishes. We employ the continued fraction method to calculate accurately the quasinormal frequencies of massive scalar fields, particularly focusing on low values of the angular number, and we show an anomalous behaviour of the decay rate of the quasinormal frequencies, for $n \geq \ell$. Also, we show that for a massive scalar field and $M \neq 0$ the effective potential allows potential wells for some values of the parameters which support bound states, which are obtained using the continued fraction method and they are characterized by having only a frequency of oscillation and they do not decay; however, for the Bronnikov-Ellis wormhole the effective potential do not support bound states. On the other side, we consider a wormhole geometry which is an exact solution of $f(R)$ modified gravity. For this geometry the quasinormal frequencies can be obtained analytically, being the longest-lived modes the ones with lowest angular number $\ell$. So, in this wormhole background the anomalous behaviour is avoided.

Massive Scalar Field Perturbations of Black Holes Surrounded by Dark Matter

We consider scalar field perturbations in the background of black holes immersed in perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). We find, by using the sixth order Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation, that the longest-lived modes are the ones with higher angular number, for a scalar field mass smaller than a critical value, known as anomalous decay rate of the quasinormal modes, while that beyond this critical value the behaviour is inverted. Moreover, we show that it is possible to recover the real part of the quasinormal frequencies (QNFs), the imaginary part of the QNFs, and the critical scalar field mass, of the Schwarzschild background for different values of the PFDM intensity parameter $k$, respectively. For values of $k$ smaller than these values, the mentioned quantities are greater than the Schwarzschild background. However, beyond of these values of $k$, these quantities are smaller than the Schwarzschild background.

Stealth Ellis Wormholes In Horndeski theories

In this work we are revisiting the well studied Ellis wormhole solution in a generalized Horndeski theory motivated from the Kaluza-Klein compactification procedure of the more fundamental higher dimensional Lovelock gravity. We show that the Ellis wormhole is analytically supported by a gravitational theory with a non-trivial coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term and we expand upon this notion by introducing higher derivative contributions of the scalar field. The extension of the gravitational theory does not yield any back-reacting component on the spacetime metric, which establishes the Ellis wormhole as a stealth solution in the generalized framework. We propose two simple mechanisms that dress the wormhole with an effective ADM mass. The first procedure is related to a conformal transformation of the metric which maps the theory to another Horndeski subclass, while the second one is inspired by the spontaneous scalarization effect on black holes.

Scalarization of the Reissner-Nordström black hole with higher derivative gauge field corrections

We discuss spontaneous scalarization of the Reissner-Nordström black hole in the presence of higher derivative gauge field corrections that arise in the context of string, as well as higher-dimensional more fundamental gravity theories. Our theory admits the Reissner-Nordström solution at the scalar vacuum of the theory ($ϕ=0$) and we find that the higher order derivative gauge field correction term results in the tachyonic instability of our system once the coupling function satisfies the condition that its second derivative is positive at the scalar vacuum in the appropriate parameter space. We find that the branches do not end with an extremal black hole, rather with a singularity as indicated by the divergence of the Kretschmann scalar. The black holes can be overcharged in the sense that they may carry larger electric charge in comparison to their mass. Finally, these solutions possess larger entropy at the event horizon radius when compared to the Reissner-Nordström black hole, as well as to scalarized black holes without the higher order derivative gauge field terms, indicating in this way the thermodynamic prefer-ability of our system, when compared to existing literature, while they respect the energy conditions.

Motion of particles around a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with scalar hair and the Event Horizon Telescope

We study the motion of uncharged particles and photons in the background of a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg (EH) black hole (BH) with scalar hair. The spacetime can be asymptotically (A)dS or flat. After investigating particle motions around the BH and the behavior of the effective potential of the particle radial motion, we determine the contribution of the BH parameters to the geodesics. Photons follow null geodesics of an effective geometry induced by the corrections of the EH non-linear electrodynamics. Thus, after determining the effective geometry, we calculate the shadow of the BH. Upon comparing the theoretically calculated BH shadow with the images of the shadows of M87* and Sgr A* obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, we impose constraints on the BH parameters, namely the scalar hair ($ν$), the magnetic charge ($Q_{m}$) and the EH parameter ($α$).

Motion of particles in a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with scalar hair

We study the geodesic motion of uncharged particles in the background of a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with a scalar hair. The spacetime can be asymptotically (A)dS or flat and we find, analysing the behavior of the effective potential of the radial motion that in all cases there exist stable and unstable orbits. Performing numerical integrations we depict the motion of particles for planetary and critical orbits, as well as for radial geodesics. We discuss the effect that the scalar hair $ν$, the magnetic charge $Q_{m}$ and the Euler-Heisenberg parameter $α$ have on the particle motion.

Asymptotic Black Holes and Conformal Mass in AdS Quadratic Curvature Gravity

We explore the consistent truncation of conserved charges in Quadratic Curvature Gravity (QCG) with anti-de Sitter asymptotics to the linear order in the Weyl tensor. The QCG action is given by the most general curvature-squared corrections to Einstein gravity, and it is suitably rendered finite by the addition of extrinsic counterterms (Kounterterms). The conserved charges derived from this action are, as a consequence, nonlinear in the spacetime Riemann tensor. A detailed analysis of the falloff of generic static solutions leads to a charge proportional to the electric part of the Weyl tensor, without loss of information on the energy of the system. The procedure followed provides firmer ground to the extension of the notion of Conformal Mass to higher-curvature gravity, as it appears as associated to a renormalized action. We observe that criticality condition in QCG poses an obstruction to the charge linearization, in contrast to previous results in Lovelock gravity, where degeneracy condition plays a key role.

Regular Compact Objects with Scalar Hair

We discuss exact regular compact object solutions in higher dimensional extensions of General Relativity sourced by a phantom scalar field in arbitrary $D$ spacetime dimensions ($D>2$), for which a central singularity is absent. We follow a bottom-up approach, by means of which, by imposing the desired form of the solution to the metric function, we derive the form of the self-interaction scalar potential, which in general appears to depend on both the scalar-hair charge and the black-hole mass. We discuss in this context the validity of the first law of thermodynamics in such systems. Consistency requires the independence of the potential of the mass, imposing in this way the dependence of the mass on the scalar charge of a type that varies with the value of $D$, and according to the no-hair theorem dressing the regular black hole solution with secondary hair. In $D=3,4$ we demonstrate that the potential depends on the ratio of the scalar charge over the mass, and thus considered as a parameter of the theory. This feature, however, does not characterise higher-dimensional cases. Calculating the $D-$dimensional Kretschmann scalar we show that it is finite at the centre point $r=0$ for arbitrary $D$, rendering the solutions regular. The phantom matter content of the theory is also regular at $r=0$, hence the radial coordinate of our manifold is defined for $r \ge 0$. We explicitly discuss the cases of $D=3,4,5,6,10$, and demonstrate that we can have regular, asymptotically flat, black holes with secondary scalar hair.

Black Holes with Scalar Hair in Three Dimensions

Three - dimensional static and spinning black hole solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system are obtained for a particular scalar field configuration. At large distances, and for small scalar field, the solutions reduce to the BTZ black hole. The scalar field dresses the black hole with secondary scalar hair, since the scalar charge is related to the conserved black hole mass and is not an independent charge. A self interacting potential is included, containing a mass term that is above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound in three dimensions. Independence of the scalar potential from the conserved black hole charges, imposes fixed mass and angular momentum to scalar charge ratios. The thermodynamic properties as well as the energy conditions of the black hole are analysed.

On Thermal Stability of Hairy Black Holes

We discuss thermodynamical stability for hairy black hole spacetimes, viewed as defects in the thermodynamical parameter space, taking into account the backreaction of a secondary hair onto the spacetime geometry, which is modified non trivially. We derive, in a model independent way, the conditions for the hairy black hole with the secondary hair to reach a stable thermal equilibrium with the heat bath. Specifically, if the scalar hair, induced by interactions of the matter fields with quadratic-curvature corrections, produces an inner horizon in the deformed geometry, a thermodynamically stable configuration will be reached with the black hole becoming extremal in its final stage. We also attempt to make some conjectures concerning the implications of this thermal stability for the existence of a minimum length in a quantum space time.

Magnetic-induced Spontaneous Scalarization in Dynamcial Chern-Simons Gravity

In the framework of the dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, we study the scalar field perturbations of the Reissner-Nordström-Melvin spacetime, which describes a charged black hole permeated by a uniform magnetic field. In the presence of the magnetic field, the scalar field acquires an effective mass whose square takes negative value in the half domain of the angular direction. This inevitably introduces the tachyonic instability and associated spontaneous scalarization as long as the coupling constant between the scalar field and the Chern-Simons invariant exceeds a threshold value. We study the object pictures of the time evolutions of the scalar field perturbations at the linear level, and find that the presence of the magnetic field will dramatically change the waveforms and associated ringdown modes. Nonlinear evolutions for the unstable perturbations are also performed in the decoupling limit, which demonstrate the scalar cloud as the final fate. Influences of the coupling constant and the black hole charge on the wave dynamics are also studied.

Rotating $(2+1)$-dimensional Black Holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton Theory

We consider Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory in $(2+1)$-dimensions where the coupling between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant is the dilatonic coupling $f(ϕ) = \exp (-2αϕ)$ and obtain novel exact rotating black hole solutions. The dilatonic parameter $α$ impacts the metric function, affecting the rotating properties of the black hole, its mass and also its thermodynamics. Calculating the entropy we find that it is always positive and the dilatonic black holes may have higher entropy than the BTZ black hole. Depending on the parameters, the dilatonic BTZ-like black hole may be thermodynamically preferred than the BTZ black hole which is recovered when $α=0$.

Magnetically Charged Euler-Heisenberg Black Holes with Scalar Hair

We study the Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg theory in the presence of a self interacting scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity. We solve analytically the field equations for the magnetically charged case and we obtain novel magnetically charged hairy black holes. The scalar field dresses the black hole with a secondary scalar hair. The hairy black hole develops three horizons when Euler-Heisenberg parameter and the magnetic charge are small and the horizon radius is getting large when the scalar charge and the gravitational mass are large. The presence of matter and the magnetic field outside the horizon of the black hole increases the temperature only for small black holes. Calculating the heat capacity we show that the asymptotically AdS Euler-Heisenberg hairy black hole undergoes a second order phase transition and then it is stabilized. Also the weak energy condition is violated for the asymptotically AdS Euler-Heisenberg hairy black hole.

Quasinormal modes of massive scalar fields in four-dimensional wormholes: anomalous decay rate

In this work we consider a Generalized Bronnikov-Ellis wormhole and the tideless Morris-Thorne wormhole and we study the propagation of massive scalar fields. We calculate the quasinormal frequencies using the WKB method and the pseudospectal Chebyshev method and we show the presence of an anomalous decay rate for the quasinormal modes in the Generalized Bronnikov-Ellis wormhole. However, such anomalous behaviour is avoided for the fundamental mode in the Morris-Thorne wormhole background.

Axion induced angular momentum reversal in Kerr-like black holes

We consider a pseudoscalar axion-like field coupled to a Chern-Simons gravitational anomaly term. The axion field backreacts on a rotating Kerr black hole background, resulting in modifications in the spacetime. In an attempt to determine potentially observable signatures, we study the angular momentum of the system of the modified Kerr-like black hole and the axionic matter outside the horizon of the black hole. As the strength of the coupling of the axion field to the Chern-Simons term is increasing, the requirement that the total angular momentum of the system remain constant forces the black hole angular momentum to decrease. There exists a critical value of this coupling beyond which the black hole starts to rotate in the opposite direction, with an increasing magnitude of its angular momentum. We interpret this effect as a consequence of the exchange of energy between the axionic matter and the gravitational anomaly, which is sourced by the rotating black hole.

Stability of black holes with non-minimally coupled scalar hair to the Einstein tensor

General relativity admits a plethora of exact compact object solutions. The augmentation of Einstein's action with non-minimal coupling terms leads to modified theories with rich structure, which, in turn, provide non-trivial solutions with intriguing phenomenology. Thus, assessing their viability under generic fluctuations is of utmost importance for gravity theories. We consider static and spherically-symmetric solutions of a Horndeski subclass which includes a massless scalar field non-minimally coupled to the Einstein tensor. Such theory possesses second-order field equations and admits an exact black hole solution with scalar hair. Here, we study the stability of such solution under axial gravitational perturbations and find that it is linearly stable. The qualitative features of the ringdown waveform depend solely on the ratio of the two available parameters of spacetime, namely the black hole mass $m$ and the non-minimal coupling strength $\ell_η$. Finally, we demonstrate the gravitational-wave ringdown transitions between three distinct patterns as the ratio $m/\ell_η$ increases; a state which is dominated by photon-sphere excitations and maintains a typical quasinormal ringdown, an intermediate long-lived state which exhibits gravitational-wave echoes and, finally, a state where the ringdown and echoes are depleted rapidly to turn to an exponential tail.

Quasinormal modes for massive charged scalar fields in Reissner-Nordström dS black holes: anomalous decay rate

The anomalous decay rate of the quasinormal modes occurs when the longest-lived modes are the ones with higher angular number. Such behaviour has been recently studied in different static spacetimes, for uncharged scalar and fermionic perturbations, being observed in both cases. In this work we consider the propagation of charged massive scalar fields in the background of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes and we mainly study the effect of the scalar field charge in the spectrum of quasinormal frequencies, as well as, its effect on the anomalous decay rate. Mainly, we show that the anomalous behaviour is present for massive charged scalar fields as well, and a critical value of scalar field mass exists, beyond which the behaviour is inverted. However, there is also a critical value of the parameter $qQ$ of the charge of the scalar field and of the charge of the black hole, which increases when the cosmological constant increases, and beyond the critical value the anomalous behaviour of the decay rate could be avoided for the fundamental mode.
