Scalarization of Chern-Simons Kerr Black Hole Solutions and Wormholes

Chern-Simons gravity rotating Kerr-type black hole solutions are revisited from the point of view of their scalarization, namely examining the back reaction of pseudoscalar axion fields on the rotating geometry. To lowest order in an angular momentum expansion, and a long range approximation for both the axion field configuration and its back reaction onto the metric, such solutions had been discussed for the first time in the context of string theory. In this work, we extend the analysis to give analytic expressions for slowly rotating black holes outside the horizon, which formally include an all order expansion in inverse powers of the radial distance from the centre of the black hole, which allows to approach arbitrarily close the horizon. We also discuss in some detail the way Chern-Simons gravity violates the energy conditions, which leads to secondary axionic hair of the rotating black hole solutions. This discussion is extended to studies of wormhole solutions, which we construct in this article via the thin-shell procedure and we demonstrate that the presence of the axion field enforces the two black hole solutions to be counter-rotating and for slow rotation, there is no backreaction of the Cotton tensor on the thin-shell of the wormhole.

$(2+1)$-Dimensional Black Holes in $f(R,ϕ)$ Gravity

We consider a $f(R)$ gravity theory in $(2+1)$-dimensions with a self-interacting scalar field non-minimally coupled to gravity. Without specifying the form of the $f(R)$ function, solving the field equations we find that the Ricci scalar receives a non-linear correction term which breaks the conformal invariance and leads to a massless black hole solution. When the non-linear term decouples, we get a well known hairy black hole solution with the scalar field conformally coupled to gravity. We also find that the entropy of our black hole may be higher than the corresponding conformal black hole which indicates that our solution may be thermodynamically preferred.

Topological Black Holes with curvature induced scalarization in the extended scalar-tensor theories

We study the perturbative behaviour of topological black holes in the presence of a cosmological constant and a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term. We calculate both analytically and numerically the quasi-normal modes of scalar perturbations in the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the case of small black holes we find a phase transition of the topological black hole to a hairy configuration.

$f({\sf R})$ Gravity Wormholes sourced by a Phantom Scalar Field

We derive an exact wormhole spacetime supported by a phantom scalar field in the context of $f({\sf R})$ gravity. Without specifying the form of the $f({\sf R})$ function, the scalar field self-interacts with a mass term potential that is derived from the scalar equation and the resulting $f({\sf R})$ model is purely supported by the scalar field and it is free of ghosts and avoids the tachyonic instability.

Disformal Transition of a Black Hole to a Wormhole in Scalar-Tensor Horndeski Theory

We consider disformal transformations in a subclass of Horndeski theory in which a scalar field is kinetically coupled to the Einstein tensor. We apply a disformal transformation on a seed hairy black hole solution of this theory and we show that there is a transition of a black hole to a wormhole. We also show that the null energy condition is violated in the wormhole configuration and we study the stability of the wormhole solution by calculating the time evolution of scalar perturbations in this geometry.

Exact Black Hole Solutions with a Conformally Coupled Scalar Field and Dynamic Ricci Curvature in $f(R)$ Gravity Theories

We report exact black hole solutions in asymptotically flat or (A)dS four-dimensional spacetime with a conformally coupled self-interacting scalar field in $f(R)$ gravity. We first consider the asymptotically flat model $f(R) = R -2α\sqrt{R}$ and derive an exact black hole solution. Then, we consider the asymptotically (A)dS model $f(R) =R -2 Λ-2 α\sqrt{R-4 Λ}$ and derive an exact black hole solution. In both cases the modified gravity parameter $α$, which has the dimension of the inverse mass, cannot be set to zero and the self-interacting potential is determined from the Klein-Gordon equation, preserving the conformal invariance. The thermodynamics of the solutions is also studied.

Horizon curvature and spacetime structure influences on black hole scalarization

Black hole spontaneous scalarization has been attracting more and more attention as it circumvents the well-known no-hair theorems. In this work, we study the scalarization in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a probe scalar field in a black hole background with different curvatures. We first probe the signal of black hole scalarization with positive curvature in different spacetimes. The scalar field in AdS spacetime could be formed easier than that in flat case. Then, we investigate the scalar field around AdS black holes with negative and zero curvatures. Comparing with negative and zero cases, the scalar field near AdS black hole with positive curvature could be much easier to emerge. And in negative curvature case, the scalar field is the most difficult to be bounded near the horizon.

Successful Higgs inflation from combined nonminimal and derivative couplings

We propose an inflationary scenario based on the concurrent presence of non-minimal coupling (NMC) and generalized non-minimal derivative coupling (GNMDC), in the context of Higgs inflation. The combined construction maintains the advantages of the individual scenarios without sharing their disadvantages. In particular, a long inflationary phase can be easily achieved due to the gravitational friction effect owed to the GNMDC, without leading to trans-Planckian values and unitarity violation. Additionally, the tensor-to-scalar ratio remains to low values due to the NMC contribution. Finally, the instabilities related to the squared sound-speed of scalar perturbations, which plague the simple GNMDC scenarios, are now healed due to the domination of the NMC contribution and the damping of the GNMDC effects during the reheating era. These features make scenarios with nonminimal and derivative couplings to gravity successful candidates for the description of inflation.

Using atomic clocks to detect local dark matter halos

It is possible that bosonic dark matter forms halos around the Sun or the Earth. We discuss the possibility of probing such halos with atomic clocks. Focusing on either a Higgs portal or photon portal interaction between the dark matter and the Standard Model, we search the possible parameter space for which a clock on Earth and a clock in space would have a discernible frequency difference. Bosonic dark matter halos surrounding the Earth can potentially be probed with current optical atomic clocks.

Hairy Black Holes in Disformal Scalar-Tensor Gravity Theories

We show that the no-hair theorem for scalar-tensor theories with bi-metric structure can be evaded. We find that hairy black hole solutions in the presence of an electric charge admit AdS, flat or dS asymptotics with spherical, flat, or hyperbolic base manifolds. Spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black holes and asymptotically AdS configurations with any horizon topology are compatible with a regular scalar field on and outside the event horizon. The latter presents a rich thermodynamic behavior induced by the disformal factor that enters as a coupling parameter in the theory. In the grand canonical ensemble, there is an interplay of stability and first-order phase transitions between thermal AdS, the hairy black hole, and the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole, whose thermodynamic phase space resembles a solid-liquid-gas system, with an electric potential playing the role of pressure. In close analogy, there is a triple point where the three phases coexist, being equally probable.

Formation of Bound States of scalar fields in AdS-asymptotic Wormholes

We use the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation to study the formation and propagation of bound states in the vicinity of a wormhole in the non-minimal derivative coupling theory of gravity. The wormhole throat connects two Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We show that when the scalar field lies in high orbital states, the corresponding potential has potential barriers that block the passage of a classical field. We investigate the behaviour of the bound states trapped in the potential wells and provide the flow between the two AdS regions.

Exact charged black hole solutions in D-dimensions in f(R) gravity

We consider Maxwell-f(R) gravity and obtain an exact charged black hole solution with dynamic curvature in D-dimensions. Considering a spherically symmetric metric ansatz and without specifying the form of f(R) we fnd a general black hole solution in D-dimensions. This general black hole solution can be reduced to the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole in D-dimensions in Einstein gravity and to the known charged black hole solutions with constant curvature in f(R) gravity. Restricting the parameters of the general solution we get polynomial solutions which reveal novel properties when compared to RN black holes. Specifcally we study the solution in (3 + 1)-dimensions in which the form of f(R) can be solved explicitly giving a dynamic curvature and compare it with the RN black hole. We also carry out a detailed study of its thermodynamics.

Time like geodesics in three-dimensional rotating Hořava AdS black hole

We study the motion of particles in the background of a three-dimensional rotating Hořava AdS black hole that corresponds to a Lorentz-violating version of the BTZ black hole and we analyze the effect of the breaking of Lorentz invariance in such motion by solving analytically the geodesic equations. Mainly, we find that Lorentz-violating version of the BTZ black hole posses a more rich geodesic structure, where the planetary and circular orbits are allowed, which does not occurs in the BTZ background.

Quasinormal modes and their anomalous behavior for black holes in $f(R)$ gravity

We study the propagation of scalar fields in the background of an asymptotically de-Sitter black hole solution in $f(R)$ gravity. The aim of this work is to analyze in modified theories of gravity the existence of an anomalous decay rate of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a massive scalar field which was recently reported in Schwarzschild black holes backgrounds, in which the longest-lived modes are the ones with higher angular number, for a scalar field mass smaller than a critical value, while that beyond this value the behavior is inverted. We study the QNMs for various overtone numbers and they depend on a parameter $β$ which appears in the metric and characterizes the $f(R)$ gravity. For small $β$, i.e small deviations from the Schwarzschild-dS black hole the anomalous behaviour in the QNMs is present for the photon sphere modes, and the critical value of the mass of the scalar field depends on the parameter $β$ while for large $β$, i.e large deviations the anomalous behaviour and the critical mass does not appear. Also, the critical mass of the scalar field increases when the overtone number increases until the $f(R)$ gravity parameter $β$ approaches the near extremal limit at which the critical mass of the scalar field does not depend anymore on the overtone number. The imaginary part of the quasinormal frequencies is always negative leading to a stable propagation of the scalar fields in this background.

Black holes of $(2+1)$-dimensional $f(R)$ gravity coupled to a scalar field

We consider $f(R)$ gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential in $(2+1)$-dimensions. Without specifying the form of the $f(R)$ function, we first obtain an exact black hole solution dressed with scalar hair with the scalar charge to appear in the $f(R)$ function and we discuss its thermodynamics. This solution at large distances gives a hairy BTZ black hole, and it reduces to the BTZ black hole when the scalar field decouples. In a pure $f(R)$ gravity supported by the scalar field, we find an exact hairy black hole similar to the BTZ black hole with phantom hair and an analytic $f(R)$ form and discuss its thermodynamics.

Anomalous decay rate of quasinormal modes in Reissner-Nordström black holes

The anomalous decay rate of the quasinormal modes occurs when the longest-lived modes are the ones with higher angular number. Such behaviour has been recently studied in different static spacetimes, for scalar and fermionic perturbations, being observed in both cases. In this work, we extend the existent studies to the charged spacetimes, namely, the Reissner-Nordström, the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter and the Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter black holes. We show that the anomalous decay rate behaviour of the scalar field perturbations is present for every charged geometry in the photon sphere modes, with the existence of a critical scalar field mass whenever $Λ\geq 0$. In general, this critical value of mass increases with the raise of the black hole charge, thus rendering a minimum in the Schwarzschild limit. We also study the dominant mode/family for the massless and massive scalar field in these geometries showing a non-trivial dominance of the spectra that depends on the black hole mass and charge.

Echoes of Compact Objects in Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

Scalar-tensor theory predicts solutions to the gravitational field equations which describe compact objects in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field to the Einstein tensor. These objects are black holes with scalar hair and wormholes supporting scalar phantom matter. The evolution of test fields in fixed asymptotically-flat backgrounds of exotic compact objects leads to the formation of echoes in the ringdown signal, which designate the existence of trapping regions close to the event horizon. Here, we consider minimally-coupled test scalar fields propagating on compact object solutions of the Horndeski action, which possess an effective cosmological constant, leading to anti-de Sitter asymptotics, and show that echoes can form in the ringdown waveform due to the entrapment of test fields between the photon sphere and the effective asymptotic boundary. Although the presence of an event horizon leads to the usual echoes with decaying amplitude, signifying modal stability of the scalarized black hole considered, we find that test scalar fields propagating on a scalarized wormhole solution give rise to echoes of constant and equal amplitude to that of the initial ringdown, indicating the existence of normal modes. Finally, we find that, near extremality, the test field exhibits a concatenation of echoes; the primary ones are associated with the trapping region between the photon sphere and the effective anti-de Sitter boundary while the secondary ones are linked to the existence of a potential well at the throat of the wormhole.

Curvature Scalarization of Black Holes in f(R) Gravity

We consider f(R) gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential. When the scalar field backreacts to the metric we find at large distances scalarized Schwarzschild-AdS and Schwarzschild-AdS-like black hole solutions. At small distances due to strong curvature effects and the scalar dynamis we find a rich structure of scalarized black hole solutions. When the scalar field is conformally coupled to gravity we also find scalarized black hole solutions at small distances.
