Observation of gain-pinned dissipative solitons in a microcavity laser

We demonstrate an experimental approach to create dissipative solitons in a microcavity laser. In particular, we shape the spatial gain profile of a quasi-one-dimensional microcavity laser with a nonresonant, pulsed optical pump to create spatially localised structures, called gain-pinned dissipative solitons that exist due to the balance of gain and nonlinear losses and are confined to a diffraction-limited volume. The ultrafast formation dynamics and decay of the gain-pinned solitons are probed directly, showing that they are created on a picosecond timescale, orders of magnitude faster than laser cavity solitons. All of the experimentally observed features and dynamics are reconstructed by using a standard complex Ginzburg-Landau model.

Observation of quantum depletion in a nonequilibrium exciton-polariton condensate

The property of superfluidity, first discovered in liquid 4He, is closely related to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of interacting bosons. However, even at zero temperature, when one would expect the whole bosonic quantum liquid to become condensed, a fraction of it is excited into higher momentum states via interparticle interactions and quantum fluctuations -- the phenomenon of quantum depletion. Quantum depletion of weakly interacting atomic BECs in thermal equilibrium is well understood theoretically but is difficult to measure. This is even more challenging in driven-dissipative systems such as exciton-polariton condensates(photons coupled to electron-hole pairs in a semiconductor), since their nonequilibrium nature is predicted to suppress quantum depletion. Here, we observe quantum depletion of an optically trapped high-density exciton-polariton condensate by directly detecting the spectral branch of elementary excitations populated by this process. Analysis of the population of this branch in momentum space shows that quantum depletion of an exciton-polariton condensate can closely follow or strongly deviate from the equilibrium Bogoliubov theory, depending on the fraction of matter (exciton) in an exciton-polariton. Our results reveal the effects of exciton-polariton interactions beyond the mean-field description and call for a deeper understanding of the relationship between equilibrium and nonequilibrium BECs.

Observation of bosonic condensation in a hybrid monolayer MoSe2-GaAs microcavity

Condensation of bosons into a macroscopic quantum state belongs to the most intriguing phenomena in nature. It was first realized in quantum gases of ultra-cold atoms, but more recently became accessible in open-dissipative, exciton-based solid-state systems at elevated temperatures. Semiconducting monolayer crystals have emerged as a new platform for studies of strongly bound excitons in ultimately thin materials. Here, we demonstrate the formation of a bosonic condensate driven by excitons hosted in an atomically thin layer of MoSe2, strongly coupled to light in a solid-state resonator. The structure is operated in the regime of collective strong coupling, giving rise to hybrid exciton-polariton modes composed of a Tamm-plasmon resonance, GaAs quantum well excitons and two-dimensional excitons confined in a monolayer of MoSe2. Polariton condensation in a monolayer crystal manifests by a superlinear increase of emission intensity from the hybrid polariton mode at injection powers as low as 4.8 pJ/pulse, as well as its density-dependent blueshift and a dramatic collapse of the emission linewidth as a hallmark of temporal coherence. Importantly, we observe a significant spin-polarization in the injected polariton condensate, a fingerprint of the core property of monolayer excitons subject to spin-valley locking. The observed effects clearly underpin the perspective of building novel highly non-linear valleytronic devices based on light-matter fluids, coherent bosonic light sources based on atomically thin materials, and paves the way towards studying materials with unconventional topological properties in the framework of bosonic condensation.

Stability and spatial coherence of nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensates

We investigate the stability and coherence properties of one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping. We model the condensate dynamics using the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of spatially homogeneous pumping, we find that the instability of the steady state leads to significant eduction of the coherence length. We consider two effects that can lead to the stabilization of the steady state, i.e. the polariton energy relaxation and the influence of an inhomogeneous pumping profile. We find that, while the former has little effect on the stability, the latter is very effective in stabilizing the condensate which results in a large coherence length.

Stability of persistent currents in open-dissipative quantum fluids

The phenomenon of stable persistent currents is central to the studies of superfluidity in a range of physical systems. While all of the previous theoretical studies of superfluid flows in annular geometries concentrated on conservative systems, here we extend the stability analysis of persistent currents to open-dissipative exciton-polariton superfluids. By considering an exciton-polariton condensate in an optically-induced annular trap, we determine stability conditions for an initially imposed flow with a non-zero orbital angular momentum. We show, theoretically and numerically, that the system can sustain metastable persistent currents in a large parameter region, and describe scenarios of the supercurrent decay due to the dynamical instability.

Creation of orbital angular momentum states with chiral polaritonic lenses

Controlled transfer of orbital angular momentum to exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate spontaneously created under incoherent, off-resonant excitation conditions is a long-standing challenge in the field of microcavity polaritonics. We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, a simple and efficient approach to generation of nontrivial orbital angular momentum states by using optically-induced potentials -- chiral polaritonic lenses.

Dynamics and stability of dark solitons in exciton-polariton condensates

We present a comprehensive analytical theory of localized nonlinear excitations - dark solitons, supported by an incoherently pumped, spatially homogeneous exciton-polariton condensate. We show that, in contrast to dark solitons in conservative systems, these nonlinear excitations "relax" by blending with the background at a finite time, which critically depends on the parameters of the condensate. Our analytical results for trajectory and lifetime are in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations of the open-dissipative mean-field model. In addition, we show that transverse instability of quasi-one-dimensional dark stripes in a two-dimensional open-dissipative condensate demonstrates features that are entirely absent in conservative systems, as creation of vortex-antivortex pairs competes with the soliton relaxation process.

Dissipative solitons and vortices in polariton superfluids

We examine spatial localisation and dynamical stability of Bose-Einstein condensates of exciton-polaritons in microcavities under the condition of off-resonant spatially inhomogeneous optical pumping both with and without a harmonic trapping potential. We employ the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii model for describing an incoherently pumped polariton condensate coupled to an exciton reservoir, and reveal that spatial localisation of the steady-state condensate occurs due to the effective self-trapping created by the polariton flows supported by the spatially inhomogeneous pump, regardless of the presence of the external potential. A ground state of the polariton condensate with repulsive interactions between the quasiparticles represents a dynamically stable bright dissipative soliton. We also investigate the conditions for sustaining spatially localised structures with non-zero angular momentum in the form of single-charge vortices.

Ground state properties of a three-site Bose-Fermi ring with a small number of atoms

We investigate a three-site ring system with a small number of quantum degenerate bosons and fermions. By means of the exact diagonalization of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we show that the symmetry of the ground state configuration is a function of both the boson-boson and the inter-species interaction in the system. The phase diagram of the system, constructed by computing the exact two-body spatial correlations, reveals nontrivial insulating phases that exist even in the strong bosonic tunneling limit and for incommensurate filling of bosons. These insulating phases are due to the inter-species interactions in the system and are not necessarily accompanied by the suppression of the particle number fluctuations.

Controlled transport of matter waves in two-dimensional optical lattices

We propose a method for achieving dynamically controllable transport of highly mobile matter-wave solitons in a driven two-dimensional optical lattice. Our numerical analysis based on the mean-field model and the theory based on the time-averaging approach, demonstrate that a fast time-periodic rocking of the two-dimensional optical lattice enables efficient stabilization and manipulation of spatially localized matter wavepackets via induced reconfigurable mobility channels.

Dynamics of matter-wave solitons in a ratchet potential

We study the dynamics of bright solitons formed in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive atomic interactions perturbed by a weak bichromatic optical lattice potential. The lattice depth is a biperiodic function of time with a zero mean, which realises a flashing ratchet for matter-wave solitons. The average velocity of a soliton and the directed soliton current induced by the ratchet depend on the number of atoms in the soliton. We employ this feature to study collisions between ratchet-driven solitons and find that soliton transport can be induced through their interactions. In the regime when matter-wave solitons are narrow compared to the lattice period the ratchet dynamics is well described by the effective Hamiltonian theory.

Nonlinearity-assisted quantum tunneling in a matter-wave interferometer

We investigate the {\em nonlinearity-assisted quantum tunneling} and formation of nonlinear collective excitations in a matter-wave interferometer, which is realised by the adiabatic transformation of a double-well potential into a single-well harmonic trap. In contrast to the linear quantum tunneling induced by the crossing (or avoided crossing) of neighbouring energy levels, the quantum tunneling between different nonlinear eigenstates is assisted by the nonlinear mean-field interaction. When the barrier between the wells decreases, the mean-field interaction aids quantum tunneling between the ground and excited nonlinear eigenstates. The resulting {\em non-adiabatic evolution} depends on the input states. The tunneling process leads to the generation of dark solitons, and the number of the generated dark solitons is highly sensitive to the matter-wave nonlinearity. The results of the numerical simulations of the matter-wave dynamics are successfully interpreted with a coupled-mode theory for multiple nonlinear eigenstates.

Multi-component gap solitons in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We model the nonlinear behaviour of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with repulsive spin-independent interactions and either ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic (polar) spin-dependent interactions, loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice potential. We show that both types of BECs exhibit dynamical instabilities and may form spatially localized multi-component structures. The localized states of the spinor matter waves take the form of vector gap solitons and self-trapped waves that exist only within gaps of the linear Bloch-wave band-gap spectrum. Of special interest are the nonlinear localized states that do not exhibit a common spatial density profile shared by all condensate components, and consequently cannot be described by the single mode approximation (SMA), frequently employed within the framework of the mean-field treatment. We show that the non-SMA states can exhibits Josephson-like internal oscillations and self-magnetisation, i.e. intrinsic precession of the local spin. Finally, we demonstrate that non-stationary states of a spinor BEC in a lattice exhibit coherent undamped spin-mixing dynamics, and that their controlled conversion into a stationary state can be achieved by the application of an external magnetic field.

Quantum effects in the dynamical localization of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study quantum effects in the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded onto the edge of a Brillouin zone of a one-dimensional periodic potential created by an optical lattice. We show that quantum fluctuations trigger the dynamical instability of the Bloch states of the condensate and can lead to the generation of arrays of matter-wave gap solitons. Our approach also allows us to study the instability-induced anomalous heating of the condensate at the edge of the Brillouin zone and growth of the uncondensed atomic fraction. We demonstrate that there are regimes in which the heating effects do not suppress the formation of the localised states. We show that a phase imprinting technique can ensure the formation of gap soliton trains after short evolution times and at fixed positions.

Quantum Computation with Diatomic Bits in Optical Lattices

We propose a scheme for scalable and universal quantum computation using diatomic bits with conditional dipole-dipole interaction, trapped within an optical lattice. The qubit states are encoded by the scattering state and the bound heteronuclear molecular state of two ultracold atoms per site. The conditional dipole-dipole interaction appears between neighboring bits when they both occupy the molecular state. The realization of a universal set of quantum logic gates, which is composed of single-bit operations and a two-bit controlled-NOT gate, is presented. The readout method is also discussed.

Three-dimensional matter-wave vortices in optical lattices

We predict the existence of spatially localized nontrivial vortex states of a Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interaction confined by a three-dimensional optical lattice. Such vortex-like structures include planar vortices, their co- and counter-rotating bound states, and distinctly three-dimensional non-planar vortex states. We demonstrate numerically that many of these vortex structures are remarkably robust, and therefore can be generated and observed in experiment.

Squeezing and entanglement of matter-wave gap solitons

We study quantum squeezing and entanglement of gap solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice. By employing a linearized quantum theory we find that quantum noise squeezing of gap solitons, produced during their evolution, is enhanced compared with the atomic solitons in a lattice-free case due to intra-soliton structure of quantum correlations induced by the Bragg scattering in the periodic potential. We also show that nonlinear interaction of gap solitons in dynamically stable bound states can produce strong soliton entanglement.

Dispersion control for matter waves and gap solitons in optical superlattices

We present a numerical study of dispersion manipulation and formation of matter-wave gap solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical superlattice. We demonstrate a method for controlled generation of matter-wave gap solitons in a stationary lattice by using an interference pattern of two condensate wavepackets, which mimics the structure of the gap soliton near the edge of a spectral band. The efficiency of this method is compared with that of gap soliton generation in a moving lattice recently demonstrated experimentally by Eiermann et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 230401 (2004)]. We show that, by changing the relative depths of the superlattice wells, one can fine-tune the effective dispersion of the matter waves at the edges of the mini-gaps of the superlattice Bloch-wave spectrum and therefore effectively control both the peak density and the spatial width of the emerging gap solitons.
