Coupled-mode theory for spatial gap solitons in optically-induced lattices

We develop a coupled-mode theory for spatial gap solitons in the one-dimensional photonic lattices induced by interfering optical beams in a nonlinear photorefractive crystal. We derive a novel system of coupled-mode equations for two counter-propagating probe waves, and find its analytical solutions for stationary gap solitons. We also predict the existence of moving (or tilted) gap solitons and study numerically soliton collisions.

Interaction of matter-wave gap solitons in optical lattices

We study mobility and interaction of gap solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined by an optical lattice potential. Such localized wavepackets can exist only in the gaps of the matter-wave band-gap spectrum and their interaction properties are shown to serve as a measure of discreteness imposed onto a BEC by the lattice potential. We show that inelastic collisions of two weakly localized near-the-band-edge gap solitons provide simple and effective means for generating strongly localized in-gap solitons through soliton fusion.

Matter-wave gap vortices in optical lattices

We predict the existence of spatially localized nontrivial topological states of the Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interactions confined by an optical lattice. These nonlinear localized states, matter-wave gap vortices, possess a phase dislocation and exist in the gaps of the matter-wave bandgap spectrum due to the Bragg scattering. We discuss the structure, stability, and formation dynamics of the gap vortices in the case of two-dimensional optical lattices.

Observation of discrete vortex solitons in optically-induced photonic lattices

We report on the frst experimental observation of discrete vortex solitons in two-dimensional optically-induced photonic lattices. We demonstrate strong stabilization of an optical vortex by the lattice in a self-focusing nonlinear medium and study the generation of the discrete vortices from a broad class of singular beams.

Dark Matter-Wave Solitons in Optical Lattices

We analyze the Floquet-Bloch matter-wave spectrum of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into single-periodic optical lattices and double-periodic superlattices. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we describe the structure and analyze the mobility properties of dark matter-wave solitons residing on the background of extended nonlinear Bloch-type states. We demonstrate that interaction between dark solitons can be effectively controlled in optical superlattices.

Localization of Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

We reveal underlying principles of nonlinear localization of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice. Our theory shows that spin-dependent optical lattices can be used to manipulate both the type and magnitude of nonlinear interaction between the ultracold atomic species and to observe nontrivial two-componentnlocalized states of a condensate in both bands and gaps of the matter-wave band-gap structure.

Band-gap solitons in nonlinear optically-induced lattices

We introduce novel optical solitons that consist of a periodic and a spatially localized components coupled nonlinearly via cross-phase modulation. The spatially localized optical field can be treated as a gap soliton supported by the optically-induced nonlinear grating. We find different types of these band-gap composite solitons and demonstrate their dynamical stability.

Matter-wave gap solitons in atomic bandgap structures

We demonstrate that a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice forms a reconfigurable matter-wave structure with a band-gap spectrum, which resembles a nonlinear photonic crystal for light waves. We study in detail the case of a two-dimensional square optical lattice and show that this atomic bandgap structure allows nonlinear localization of atomic Bloch waves in the form of two-dimensional matter-wave gap solitons.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices: Band-Gap Structure and Solitons

We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions.

Vortices in atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

The structure and stability of vortices in hybrid atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates is analyzed in the framework of a two-component Gross-Pitaevskii-type model that describes the stimulated Raman-induced photoassociation process. New types of topological vortex states are predicted to exist in the coherently coupled two-component condensates even without a trap, and their nontrivial dynamics in the presence of losses is demonstrated.

Modulational instability of spinor condensates

We demonstrate, analytically and numerically, that the ferromagnetic phase of the spinor Bose-Einstein condenstate may experience modulational instability of the ground state leading to a fragmentation of the spin domains. Together with other nonlinear effects in the atomic optics of ultra-cold gases (such as coherent photoassociation and four-wave mixing) this effect provides one more analogy between coherent matter waves and light waves in nonlinear optics.

Atom laser dynamics

An ideal atom laser would produce an atomic beam with highly stable flux and energy. In practice the stability is likely to be limited by technical noise and nonlinear dynamical effects. We investigate the dynamics of an atom laser using a comprehensive one dimensional, mean-field numerical model. We fully model the output beam and experimentally important physics such as three-body recombination. We find that at high pump rates the latter plays a role in suppressing the high frequency dynamics, which would otherwise limit the stability of the output beam.

Existence and stability of atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the model of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) parametrically coupled to a molecular BEC via a photoassociation process. We show that an interplay of nonlinear inter- and intra-species interactions leads to the formation of mutually trapped states of a hybrid condensate, which are spatially localized even without a trap. The untrapped atomic-molecular condensates with a large number of atoms in either fraction are shown to be dynamically stable in the framework of a mean field theory.

Multi-soliton energy transport in anharmonic lattices

We demonstrate the existence of dynamically stable multihump solitary waves in polaron-type models describing interaction of envelope and lattice excitations. In comparison with the earlier theory of multihump optical solitons [see Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 296 (1999)], our analysis reveals a novel physical mechanism for the formation of stable multihump solitary waves in nonintegrable multi-component nonlinear models.

Pulse Shepherding and Multi-Channel Soliton Transmission in Bit-Parallel-Wavelength Optical Fiber Links

We study bit-parallel-wavelength (BPW) pulse transmission in multi-channel single-mode optical fiber links for high-performance computer networks. We develop a theory of the pulse shepherding effect earlier discovered in numerical simulations, and also describe the families of the BPW solitons and bifurcation cascades in a system of N coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Observation of dipole-mode vector solitons

We report on the first experimental observation of a novel type of optical vector soliton, a {\em dipole-mode soliton}, recently predicted theoretically. We show that these vector solitons can be generated in a photorefractive medium employing two different processes: a phase imprinting, and a symmetry-breaking instability of a vortex-mode vector soliton. The experimental results display remarkable agreement with the theory, and confirm the robust nature of these radially asymmetric two-component solitary waves.

Multi-component optical solitary waves

We discuss several novel types of multi-component (temporal and spatial) envelope solitary waves that appear in fiber and waveguide nonlinear optics. In particular, we describe multi-channel solitary waves in bit-parallel-wavelength fiber transmission systems for high performance computer networks, multi-colour parametric spatial solitary waves due to cascaded nonlinearities of quadratic materials, and quasiperiodic envelope solitons due to quasi-phase-matching in Fibonacci optical superlattices.
