A modular Poincaré-Wirtinger type inequality on Lipschitz domains for Sobolev spaces with variable exponents

In the context of Sobolev spaces with variable exponents, Poincaré--Wirtinger inequalities are possible as soon as Luxemburg norms are considered. On the other hand, modular versions of the inequalities in the expected form \begin{equation*} \int_Ω\left|f(x)-\langle f\rangle_Ω\right|^{p(x)} \ {\mathrm{d} x} \leqslant C \int_Ω|\nabla f(x)|^{p(x)}{\mathrm{d} x}, \end{equation*} are known to be \emph{false}. As a result, all available modular versions of the Poincaré- Wirtinger inequality in the variable-exponent setting always contain extra terms that do not disappear in the constant exponent case, preventing such inequalities from reducing to the classical ones in the constant exponent setting. Our contribution is threefold. First, we establish that a modular Poincaré--Wirtinger inequality particularizing to the classical one in the constant exponent case is indeed conceivable. We show that if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded Lipschitz domain, and if $p\in L^\infty(Ω)$, $p \geq 1$, then for every $f\in C^\infty(\barΩ)$ the following generalized Poincaré--Wirtinger inequality holds \begin{equation*} \int_Ω\left|f(x)-\langle f\rangle_Ω\right|^{p(x)} \ {\mathrm{d} x} \leq C \int_Ω\int_Ω\frac{|\nabla f(z)|^{p(x)}}{|z-x|^{n-1}}\ {\mathrm{d} z}{\mathrm{d} x}, \end{equation*} where $\langle f\rangle_Ω$ denotes the mean of $f$ over $Ω$, and $C>0$ is a positive constant depending only on $Ω$ and $\|p\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$. Second, our argument is concise and constructive and does not rely on compactness results. Third, we additionally provide geometric information on the best Poincaré--Wirtinger constant on Lipschitz domains.

A Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu formula accounting for nonlocal antisymmetric exchange interactions

The present study concerns the nonlocal-to-local convergence of a family of exchange energy functionals in the limit of very short-range interactions. The analysis accounts for both symmetric and antisymmetric exchange. Our result is twofold. First, we extend the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu formula to encompass the scenario where antisymmetric contributions are encoded into the energy. Second, we prove that, under physically relevant assumptions on the families of exchange kernels, the family of nonlocal functionals Gamma-converges to their local counterparts. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain a rigorous justification of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in chiral magnets under the form commonly adopted in the variational theory of micromagnetism when modeling antisymmetric exchange interactions.

Local asymptotics and optimal control for a viscous Cahn-Hilliard-Reaction-Diffusion model for tumor growth

In this paper we study nonlocal-to-local asymptotics for a tumor-growth model coupling a viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation describing the tumor proportion with a reaction-diffusion equation for the nutrient phase parameter. First, we prove that solutions to the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard system converge, as the nonlocality parameter tends to zero, to solutions to its local counterpart. Second, we provide first-order optimality conditions for an optimal control problem on the local model, accounting also for chemotaxis, and both for regular or singular potentials, without any additional regularity assumptions on the solution operator. The proof is based on an approximation of the local control problem by means of suitable nonlocal ones, and on proving nonlocal-to-local convergence both for the corresponding dual systems and for the associated first-order optimality conditions.

Stochastic homogenization of micromagnetic energies and emergence of magnetic skyrmions

We perform a stochastic-homogenization analysis for composite materials exhibiting a random microstructure. Under the assumptions of stationarity and ergodicity, we characterize the Gamma-limit of a micromagnetic energy functional defined on magnetizations taking value in the unit sphere, and including both symmetric and antisymmetric exchange contributions. This Gamma-limit corresponds to a micromagnetic energy functional with homogeneous coefficients. We provide explicit formulas for the effective magnetic properties of the composite material in terms of homogenization correctors. Additionally, the variational analysis of the two exchange energy terms is performed in the more general setting of functionals defined on manifold-valued maps with Sobolev regularity, in the case in which the target manifold is a bounded, orientable smooth surface with tubular neighborhood of uniform thickness. Eventually, we present an explicit characterization of minimizers of the effective exchange in the case of magnetic multilayers, providing quantitative evidence of Dzyaloshinskii's predictions on the emergence of helical structures in composite ferromagnetic materials with stochastic microstructure.

Effective quasistatic evolution models for perfectly plastic plates with periodic microstructure: the limiting regimes

We identify effective models for thin, linearly elastic and perfectly plastic plates exhibiting a microstructure resulting from the periodic alternation of two elastoplastic phases. We study here both the case in which the thickness of the plate converges to zero on a much faster scale than the periodicity parameter and the opposite scenario in which homogenization occurs on a much finer scale than dimension reduction. After performing a static analysis of the problem, we show convergence of the corresponding quasistatic evolutions. The methodology relies on two-scale convergence and periodic unfolding, combined with suitable measure-disintegration results and evolutionary $Γ$-convergence.

Sharp conditions for the validity of the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu formula

Following the seminal paper by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu, we focus on the asymptotic behavior of some nonlocal functionals that, for each $u\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$, are defined as the double integrals of weighted, squared difference quotients of $u$. Given a family of weights $\{ρ_ε\}$, $ε\in (0,1)$, we devise sufficient and necessary conditions on $\{ρ_ε\}$ for the associated nonlocal functionals to converge as $ε\to 0$ to a variant of the Dirichlet integral. Finally, some comparison between our result and the existing literature is provided.

Effective quasistatic evolution models for perfectly plastic plates with periodic microstructure

An effective model is identified for thin perfectly plastic plates whose microstructure consists of the periodic assembling of two elastoplastic phases, as the periodicity parameter converges to zero. Assuming that the thickness of the plates and the periodicity of the microstructure are comparably small, a limiting description is obtained in the quasistatic regime via simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction by means of evolutionary $Γ$-convergence, two-scale convergence, and periodic unfolding.

Structural changes in nonlocal denoising models arising through bi-level parameter learning

We introduce a unified framework based on bi-level optimization schemes to deal with parameter learning in the context of image processing. The goal is to identify the optimal regularizer within a family depending on a parameter in a general topological space. Our focus lies on the situation with non-compact parameter domains, which is, for example, relevant when the commonly used box constraints are disposed of. To overcome this lack of compactness, we propose a natural extension of the upper-level functional to the closure of the parameter domain via Gamma-convergence, which captures possible structural changes in the reconstruction model at the edge of the domain. Under two main assumptions, namely, Mosco-convergence of the regularizers and uniqueness of minimizers of the lower-level problem, we prove that the extension coincides with the relaxation, thus admitting minimizers that relate to the parameter optimization problem of interest. We apply our abstract framework to investigate a quartet of practically relevant models in image denoising, all featuring nonlocality. The associated families of regularizers exhibit qualitatively different parameter dependence, describing a weight factor, an amount of nonlocality, an integrability exponent, and a fractional order, respectively. After the asymptotic analysis that determines the relaxation in each of the four settings, we finally establish theoretical conditions on the data that guarantee structural stability of the models and give examples of when stability is lost.

Non-interpenetration conditions in the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith fracture

We characterize the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith-fracture theories under non-interpenetration constraints. In particular, sequences of deformations satisfying a Ciarlet-Nečas condition in SBV^2 and for which a convergence of the energies is ensured, are shown to admit asymptotic representations in GSBD^2 satisfying a suitable contact condition. With an explicit counterexample, we prove that this result fails if convergence of the energies does not hold. We further prove that each limiting displacement satisfying the contact condition can be approximated by an energy-convergent sequence of deformations fulfilling a Ciarlet-Nečas condition. The proof relies on a piecewise Korn-Poincaré inequality in GSBD2, on a careful blow-up analysis around jump points, as well as on a refined GSBD^2-density result guaranteeing enhanced contact conditions for the approximants.

Existence results in large-strain magnetoelasticity

We investigate variational problems in large-strain magnetoelasticity, both in the static and in the quasistatic setting. The model contemplates a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation: while deformations are defined on the reference configuration, magnetizations are defined on the deformed set in the actual space. In the static setting, we establish the existence of minimizers. In particular, we provide a compactness result for sequences of admissible states with equi-bounded energies which gives the convergence of the composition of magnetizations with deformations. In the quasistatic setting, we consider a notion of dissipation which is frame-indifferent and we show that the incremental minimization problem is solvable. Then, we propose a regularization of the model in the spirit of gradient polyconvexity and we prove the existence of energetic solutions for the regularized model.

Homogenization of high-contrast composites under differential constraints

We derive, by means of variational techniques, a limiting description for a class of integral functionals under linear differential constraints. The functionals are designed to encode the energy of a high-contrast composite, that is, a heterogeneous material which, at a microscopic level, consists of a periodically perforated matrix whose cavities are occupied by a filling with very different physical properties. Our main result provides a $Γ$-convergence analysis as the periodicity tends to zero, and shows that the variational limit of the functionals at stake is the sum of two contributions, one resulting from the energy stored in the matrix and the other from the energy stored in the inclusions. As a consequence of the underlying high-contrast structure, the study is faced with a lack of coercivity with respect to the standard topologies in $L^p$, which we tackle by means of two-scale convergence techniques. In order to handle the differential constraints, instead, we establish new results about the existence of potentials and of constraint-preserving extension operators for linear, $k$-th order, homogeneous differential operators with constant coefficients and constant rank.

Existence results for a morphoelastic model

We present some existence results for three-dimensional quasistatic morphoelasticity. The state of the growing body is described by its deformation and the underlying growth tensor and is ruled by the interplay of hyperelastic energy minimization and growth dynamics. By introducing a regularization in the model, we prove that solutions can be obtained as limits of time-discrete solutions, built by means of an exponential-update scheme. By further allowing the dependence of growth dynamics on an additional scalar field, to be interpreted as a nutrient or inhibitor, we formulate an optimal control problem and prove existence of optimal controls and states. Eventually, we tackle the existence of coupled morphoelastic and nutrient solutions, when the latter is allowed to diffuse and interact with the growing body.

On static and evolutionary homogenization in crystal plasticity for stratified composites

The starting point for this work is a static macroscopic model for a high-contrast layered material in single-slip finite crystal plasticity, identified in [Christowiak & Kreisbeck, Calc. Var. PDE (2017)] as a homogenization limit via Γ-convergence. First, we analyze the minimizers of this limit model, addressing the question of uniqueness and deriving necessary conditions. In particular, it turns out that at least one of the defining quantities of an energetically optimal deformation, namely the rotation and the shear variable, is uniquely determined, and we identify conditions that give rise to a trivial material response in the sense of rigid-body motions. The second part is concerned with extending the static homogenization to an evolutionary Γ- convergence-type result for rate-independent systems in specific scenarios, that is, under certain assumptions on the slip systems and suitable regularizations of the energies, where energetic and dissipative effects decouple in the limit. Interestingly, when the slip direction is aligned with the layered microstructure, the limiting system is purely energetic, which can be interpreted as a loss of dissipation through homogenization.

Spectral optimization of inhomogeneous plates

This article is devoted to the study of spectral optimisation for inhomogeneous plates. In particular, we optimise the first eigenvalue of a vibrating plate with respect to its thickness and/or density. Our result is threefold. First, we prove existence of an optimal thickness, using fine tools hinging on topological properties of rearrangement classes. Second, in the case of a circular plate, we provide a characterisation of this optimal thickness by means of Talenti inequalities. Finally, we prove a stability result when assuming that the thickness and the density of the plate are linearly related. This proof relies on H-convergence tools applied to biharmonic operators.

Equilibria of charged hyperelastic solids

We investigate equilibria of charged deformable materials via the minimization of an electroelastic energy. This features the coupling of elastic response and electrostatics by means of a capacitary term, which is naturally defined in Eulerian coordinates. The ensuing electroelastic energy is then of mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian type. We prove that minimizers exist by investigating the continuity properties of the capacitary terms under convergence of the deformations

A note about hardening-free viscoelastic models in Maxwellian-type rheologies at large strains

Maxwellian-type rheological models of inelastic effects of creep type at large strains are revisited in relation to inelastic-strain gradient theories. In particular, we observe that a dependence of the stored-energy density on inelastic-strain gradients may lead to spurious hardening effects, preventing the model from accommodating large inelastic slips. The main result of this paper is an alternative inelastic model of creep type, where higher-order energy-contribution is provided by the gradients of the elastic strain and of the plastic strain rate, thus preventing the onset of spurious hardening under large slips. The combination of Kelvin-Voigt damping and Maxwellian creep results in a Jeffreys-type rheological model. Existence of weak solutions is proved via a Faedo-Galerkin approximation.

Micromagnetics of thin films in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

In this paper, we study the thin-film limit of the micromagnetic energy functional in the presence of bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Our analysis includes both a stationary $Γ$-convergence result for the micromagnetic energy, as well as the identification of the asymptotic behavior of the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. In particular, we prove that, in the limiting model, part of the DMI term behaves like the projection of the magnetic moment onto the normal to the film, contributing this way to an increase in the shape anisotropy arising from the magnetostatic self-energy. Finally, we discuss a convergent finite element approach for the approximation of the time-dependent case and use it to numerically compare the original three-dimensional model with the two-dimensional thin-film limit.

Separately Global Solutions to Rate-Independent Processes in Large-Strain Inelasticity

In this paper, we introduce the notion of separately global solutions for large-strain rate-independent systems, and we provide an existence result for a model describing bulk damage. Our analysis covers non-convex energies blowing up for extreme compressions, yields solutions excluding interpenetration of matter, and allows to handle nonlinear couplings of the deformation and the internal variable featuring both Eulerian and Lagrangian terms. In particular, motivated by the theory developed in [49] in the small strain setting, and for separately convex energies we provide a solution concept suitable for large strain inelasticity.
