A new, rearrangement-free proof of the sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality

We show that the sharp constant in the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality can be derived using the method that we employed earlier for a similar inequality on the Heisenberg group. The merit of this proof is that it does not rely on rearrangement inequalities; it is the first one to do so for the whole parameter range.

Extended quantum conditional entropy and quantum uncertainty inequalities

Quantum states can be subjected to classical measurements, whose incompatibility, or uncertainty, can be quantified by a comparison of certain entropies. There is a long history of such entropy inequalities between position and momentum. Recently these inequalities have been generalized to the tensor product of several Hilbert spaces and we show here how their derivations can be shortened to a few lines and how they can be generalized. All the recently derived uncertainty relations utilize the strong subadditivity (SSA) theorem; our contribution relies on directly utilizing the proof technique of the original derivation of SSA.

Bounds for Entanglement via an Extension of Strong Subadditivity of Entropy

We prove lower bounds for the entanglement of formation and the squashed entanglement for any a bipartite density matrix in terms of the conditional entropy of the bipartite state with respect to either of its partial traces, and prove that these bounds are sharp by constructing a new class of states whose entanglements can be computed, and for which the bounds are saturated.

Symmetry of bipolaron bound states for small Coulomb repulsion

We consider the bipolaron in the Pekar--Tomasevich approximation and address the question whether the ground state is spherically symmetric or not. Numerical analysis has, so far, not completely settled the question. Our contribution is to prove rigorously that the ground state remains spherical for small values of the electron-electron Coulomb repulsion.

Sharp constants in several inequalities on the Heisenberg group

We derive the sharp constants for the inequalities on the Heisenberg group H^n whose analogues on Euclidean space R^n are the well known Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities. Only one special case had been known previously, due to Jerison-Lee more than twenty years ago. From these inequalities we obtain the sharp constants for their duals, which are the Sobolev inequalities for the Laplacian and conformally invariant fractional Laplacians. By considering limiting cases of these inequalities sharp constants for the analogues of the Onofri and log-Sobolev inequalities on H^n are obtained. The methodology is completely different from that used to obtain the R^n inequalities and can be (and has been) used to give a new, rearrangement free, proof of the HLS inequalities.

Asymmetric Covariance Estimates of Brascamp-Lieb Type and Related Inequalities for Log-concave Measures

An inequality of Brascamp and Lieb provides a bound on the covariance of two functions with respect to log-concave measures. The bound estimates the covariance by the product of the $L^2$ norms of the gradients of the functions, where the magnitude of the gradient is computed using an inner product given by the inverse Hessian matrix of the potential of the log-concave measure. Menz and Otto \cite{OM} proved a variant of this with the two $L^2$ norms replaced by $L^1$ and $L^\infty$ norms, but only for $\R^1$. We prove a generalization of both by extending these inequalities to $L^p$ and $L^q$ norms and on $\R^n$, for any $n\geq 1$. We also prove an inequality for integrals of divided differences of functions in terms of integrals of their gradients.

Entropy and the uncertainty principle

We generalize, improve and unify theorems of Rumin, and Maassen--Uffink about classical entropies associated to quantum density matrices. These theorems refer to the classical entropies of the diagonals of a density matrix in two different bases. Thus they provide a kind of uncertainty principle. Our inequalities are sharp because they are exact in the high-temperature or semi-classical limit.

Unique equilibria and substitution effects in a stochastic model of the marriage market

Choo-Siow (2006) proposed a model for the marriage market which allows for random identically distributed noise in the preferences of each of the participants. The randomness is McFadden-type, which permits an explicit resolution of the equilibrium preference probabilities. The purpose of this note is to prove uniqueness of the resulting equilibrium marriage distribution, and find a representation of it in closed form. This allows us to derive smooth dependence of this distribution on exogenous preference and population parameters, and establish sign, symmetry, and size of the various substitution effects, facilitating comparative statics. For example, we show that an increase in the population of men of any given type in this model leads to an increase in single men of each type, and a decrease in single women of each type. We show that an increase in the number of men of a given type increases the equilibrium transfer paid by such men to their spouses, and also increases the percentage of men of that type who choose to remain unmarried. The verification of such properties helps to substantiate the validity of the model. Moreover, we make unexpected predictions which could be tested: the percentage change of type $i$ unmarrieds with respect to fluctuations in the total number of type $j$ men or women turns out to form a symmetric positive-definite matrix $r_{ij}=r_{ji}$ in this model, and thus to satisfy bounds like $|r_{ij}| \le (r_{ii}r_{jj})^{1/2}$. Along the way, we give a new proof for the existence of an equilibrium, based on a strictly convex variational principle and a simple estimate, rather than a fixed point theorem. Fixed point approaches to the existence part of our result have been explored by others \cite{CSS} \cite{Dag} \cite{Fox}, but are much more complicated and yield neither uniqueness, nor comparative statics, nor an explicit representation of the solution.

Non-Abelian Vortices in Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory via Direct Methods

Vortices in supersymmetric gauge field theory are important constructs in a basic conceptual phenomenon commonly referred to as the dual Meissner effect which is responsible for color confinement. Based on a direct minimization approach, we present a series of sharp existence and uniqueness theorems for the solutions of some non-Abelian vortex equations governing color-charged multiply distributed flux tubes, which provide an essential mechanism for linear confinement. Over a doubly periodic domain, existence results are obtained under explicitly stated necessary and sufficient conditions that relate the size of the domain, the vortex numbers, and the underlying physical coupling parameters of the models. Over the full plane, existence results are valid for arbitrary vortex numbers and coupling parameters. In all cases, solutions are unique.

Checkerboards, stripes and corner energies in spin models with competing interactions

We study the zero temperature phase diagram of Ising spin systems in two dimensions in the presence of competing interactions, long range antiferromagnetic and nearest neighbor ferromagnetic of strength J. We first introduce the notion of a "corner energy" which shows, when the antiferromagnetic interaction decays faster than the fourth power of the distance, that a striped state is favored with respect to a checkerboard state when J is close to J_c, the transition to the ferromagnetic state, i.e., when the length scales of the uniformly magnetized domains become large. Next, we perform detailed analytic computations on the energies of the striped and checkerboard states in the cases of antiferromagnetic interactions with exponential decay and with power law decay r^{-p}, p>2, that depend on the Manhattan distance instead of the Euclidean distance. We prove that the striped phase is always favored compared to the checkerboard phase when the scale of the ground state structure is very large. This happens for J\lesssim J_c if p>3, and for J sufficiently large if 2<p<=3. Many of our considerations involving rigorous bounds carry over to dimensions greater than two and to more general short-range ferromagnetic interactions.

Binding of Polarons and Atoms at Threshold

If the polaron coupling constant $α$ is large enough, bipolarons or multi-polarons will form. When passing through the critical $α_c$ from above, does the radius of the system simply get arbitrarily large or does it reach a maximum and then explodes? We prove that it is always the latter. We also prove the analogous statement for the Pekar-Tomasevich (PT) approximation to the energy, in which case there is a solution to the PT equation at $α_c$. Similarly, we show that the same phenomenon occurs for atoms, e.g., helium, at the critical value of the nuclear charge. Our proofs rely only on energy estimates, not on a detailed analysis of the Schrödinger equation, and are very general. They use the fact that the Coulomb repulsion decays like $1/r$, while `uncertainty principle' localization energies decay more rapidly, as $1/r^2$.

Possible Lattice Distortions in the Hubbard Model for Graphene

The Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice is a well known model for graphene. Equally well known is the Peierls type of instability of the lattice bond lengths. In the context of these two approximations we ask and answer the question of the possible lattice distortions for graphene in zero magnetic field. The answer is that in the thermodynamic limit only periodic, reflection-symmetric distortions are allowed and these have at most six atoms per unit cell as compared to two atoms for the undistorted lattice.

Energy Cost to Make a Hole in the Fermi Sea

The change in energy of an ideal Fermi gas when a local one-body potential is inserted into the system, or when the density is changed locally, are important quantities in condensed matter physics. We show that they can be rigorously bounded from below by a universal constant times the value given by the semiclassical approximation.

Binding, Stability, and Non-binding of Multi-polaron Systems

The binding of polarons, or its absence, is an old and subtle topic. After defining the model we state some recent theorems of ours. First, the transition from many-body collapse to the existence of a thermodynamic limit for N polarons occurs precisely at U=2α, where U is the electronic Coulomb repulsion and αis the polaron coupling constant. Second, if U is large enough, there is no multi-polaron binding of any kind. We also discuss the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation to the ground state energy, which is valid for large α. Finally, we derive exact results, not reported before, about the one-dimensional toy model introduced by E. P. Gross.

Localization of Multi-Dimensional Wigner Distributions

A well known result of P. Flandrin states that a Gaussian uniquely maximizes the integral of the Wigner distribution over every centered disc in the phase plane. While there is no difficulty in generalizing this result to higher-dimensional poly-discs, the generalization to balls is less obvious. In this note we provide such a generalization.

Stability and Absence of Binding for Multi-Polaron Systems

We resolve several longstanding problems concerning the stability and the absence of multi-particle binding for N\geq 2 polarons. Fröhlich's 1937 polaron model describes non-relativistic particles interacting with a scalar quantized field with coupling \sqrtα, and with each other by Coulomb repulsion of strength U. We prove the following: (i) While there is a known thermodynamic instability for U<2α, stability of matter does hold for U>2α, that is, the ground state energy per particle has a finite limit as N\to\infty. (ii) There is no binding of any kind if U exceeds a critical value that depends on αbut not on N. The same results are shown to hold for the Pekar-Tomasevich model.

Bi-Polaron and N-Polaron Binding Energies

The binding of polarons, or its absence, is an old and subtle topic. Here we prove two things rigorously. First, the transition from many-body collapse to the existence of a thermodynamic limit for N polarons occurs precisely at U=2α, where U is the electronic Coulomb repulsion and αis the polaron coupling constant. Second, if U is large enough, there is no multi-polaron binding of any kind. Considering the known fact that there is binding for some U>2α, these conclusions are not obvious and their proof has been an open problem for some time.
