Spherical reflection positivity and the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality

We introduce the concept of spherical (as distinguished from planar) reflection positivity and use it to obtain a new proof of the sharp constants in certain cases of the HLS and the logarithmic HLS inequality. Our proofs relies on an extension of a work by Li and Zhu which characterizes the minimizing functions of the type $(1+|x|^2)^{-p}$.

Mueller's Exchange-Correlation Energy in Density-Matrix-Functional Theory

The increasing interest in the Mueller density-matrix-functional theory has led us to a systematic mathematical investigation of its properties. This functional is similar to the Hartree-Fock functional, but with a modified exchange term in which the square of the density matrix γ(X, X') is replaced by the square of γ^{1/2}(X, X'). After an extensive introductory discussion of density-matrix-functional theory we show, among other things, that this functional is convex (unlike the HF functional) and that energy minimizing γ's have unique densities ρ(x), which is a physically desirable property often absent in HF theory. We show that minimizers exist if N \leq Z, and derive various properties of the minimal energy and the corresponding minimizers. We also give a precise statement about the equation for the orbitals of γ, which is more complex than for HF theory. We state some open mathematical questions about the theory together with conjectured solutions.

The Yrast Line of a Rapidly Rotating Bose Gas: Gross-Pitaevskii Regime

We consider an ultracold rotating Bose gas in a harmonic trap close to the critical angular velocity so that the system can be considered to be confined to the lowest Landau level. With this assumption we prove that the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional accurately describes the ground state energy of the corresponding $N$-body Hamiltonian with contact interaction provided the total angular momentum $L$ is much less than $N^2$. While the Gross-Pitaevskii energy is always an obvious variational upper bound to the ground state energy, a more refined analysis is needed to establish it as an exact lower bound. We also discuss the question of Bose-Einstein condensation in the parameter range considered. Coherent states together with inequalities in spaces of analytic functions are the main technical tools.

Modulated phases of a 1D sharp interface model in a magnetic field

We investigate the ground states of 1D continuum models having short-range ferromagnetic type interactions and a wide class of competing longer-range antiferromagnetic type interactions. The model is defined in terms of an energy functional, which can be thought of as the Hamiltonian of a coarse-grained microscopic system or as a mesoscopic free energy functional describing various materials. We prove that the ground state is simple periodic whatever the prescribed total magnetization might be. Previous studies of this model of frustrated systems assumed this simple periodicity but, as in many examples in condensed matter physics, it is neither obvious nor always true that ground states do not have a more complicated, or even chaotic structure.

Pattern formation in systems with competing interactions

There is a growing interest, inspired by advances in technology, in the low temperature physics of thin films. These quasi-2D systems show a wide range of ordering effects including formation of striped states, reorientation transitions, bubble formation in strong magnetic fields, etc. The origins of these phenomena are, in many cases, traced to competition between short ranged exchange ferromagnetic interactions, favoring a homogeneous ordered state, and the long ranged dipole-dipole interaction, which opposes such ordering on the scale of the whole sample. The present theoretical understanding of these phenomena is based on a combination of variational methods and a variety of approximations, e.g., mean-field and spin-wave theory. The comparison between the predictions of these approximate methods and the results of MonteCarlo simulations are often difficult because of the slow relaxation dynamics associated with the long-range nature of the dipole-dipole interactions. In this note we will review recent work where we prove existence of periodic structures in some lattice and continuum model systems with competing interactions. The continuum models have also been used to describe micromagnets, diblock polymers, etc.

Symmetry breaking in Laughlin's state on a cylinder

We investigate Laughlin's fractional quantum Hall effect wave function on a cylinder. We show that it displays translational symmetry breaking in the axial direction for sufficiently thin cylinders. At filling factor 1/p, the period is p times the period of the filled lowest Landau level. The proof uses a connection with one-dimensional polymer systems and discrete renewal equations.

Periodic minimizers in 1D local mean field theory

Using reflection positivity techniques we prove the existence of minimizers for a class of mesoscopic free-energies representing 1D systems with competing interactions. All minimizers are either periodic, with zero average, or of constant sign. If the local term in the free energy satisfies a convexity condition, then all minimizers are either periodic or constant. Examples of both phenomena are given. This extends our previous work where such results were proved for the ground states of lattice systems with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions and dipolar type antiferromagnetic long range interactions.

A Minkowski Type Trace Inequality and Strong Subadditivity of Quantum Entropy II: Convexity and Concavity

We revisit and prove some convexity inequalities for trace functions conjectured in the earlier part I. The main functional considered is Φ_{p,q}(A_1,A_2,...,A_m) = (trace((\sum_{j=1}^m A_j^p)^{q/p}))^{1/q} for m positive definite operators A_j. In part I we only considered the case q=1 and proved the concavity of Φ_{p,1} for 0 < p \leq 1 and the convexity for p=2. We conjectured the convexity of Φ_{p,1} for 1< p < 2. Here we not only settle the unresolved case of joint convexity for 1 \leq p \leq 2, we are also able to include the parameter q\geq 1 and still retain the convexity. Among other things this leads to a definition of an L^q(L^p) norm for operators when 1 \leq p \leq 2 and a Minkowski inequality for operators on a tensor product of three Hilbert spaces -- which leads to another proof of strong subadditivity of entropy. We also prove convexity/concavity properties of some other, related functionals.

Probabilistic coherence and proper scoring rules

We provide self-contained proof of a theorem relating probabilistic coherence of forecasts to their non-domination by rival forecasts with respect to any proper scoring rule. The theorem appears to be new but is closely related to results achieved by other investigators.

Striped phases in two dimensional dipole systems

We prove that a system of discrete 2D in-plane dipoles with four possible orientations, interacting via a 3D dipole-dipole interaction plus a nearest neighbor ferromagnetic term, has periodic striped ground states. As the strength of the ferromagnetic term is increased, the size of the stripes in the ground state increases, becoming infinite, i.e., giving a ferromagentic ground state, when the ferromagentic interaction exceeds a certain critical value. We also give a rigorous proof of the reorientation transition in the ground state of a 2D system of discrete dipoles with six possible orientations, interacting via a 3D dipole-dipole interaction plus a nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic term. As the strength of the antiferromagnetic term is increased the ground state flips from being striped and in-plane to being staggered and out-of-plane. An example of a rotator model with a sinusoidal ground state is also discussed.

Bose-Einstein Condensation and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

After recalling briefly the connection between spontaneous symmetry breaking and off-diagonal long range order for models of magnets a general proof of spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry as a consequence of Bose-Einstein Condensation is presented. The proof is based on a rigorous validation of Bogoliubov's $c$-number substitution for the ${\bf k}={\bf 0}$ mode operator $a_{\bf 0}$.

Hardy-Lieb-Thirring inequalities for fractional Schroedinger operators

We show that the Lieb-Thirring inequalities on moments of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger-like operators remain true, with possibly different constants, when the critical Hardy-weight $C|x|^{-2}$ is subtracted from the Laplace operator. We do so by first establishing a Sobolev inequality for such operators. Similar results are true for fractional powers of the Laplacian and the Hardy-weight and, in particular, for relativistic Schroedinger operators. We also allow for the inclusion of magnetic vector potentials. As an application, we extend, for the first time, the proof of stability of relativistic matter with magnetic fields all the way up to the critical value of the nuclear charge $Zα=2/π$.
