Segre determinants and MHV gravity amplitudes

We describe a Segre-Veronese construction of polynomial solutions to the interpolation conditions of the numerators of tree-level MHV gravity amplitudes given by Hodges' formula. The five- and six-point Hodges numerators arise from Segre determinants, while for every $n\geq7$ suitable Segre determinants lead to solutions linearly independent of the Hodges numerator. The existence of such independent elements for $n=7,8$ was recently established by Mai and Zhang.

Symmetrization maps and minimal border rank Comon's conjecture

One of the fundamental open problems in the field of tensors is the border Comon's conjecture: given a symmetric tensor $F\in(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes d}$ for $d\geq 3$, its border and symmetric border ranks are equal. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for large classes of concise tensors in $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes d}$ of border rank $n$, i.e., tensors of minimal border rank. These families include all tame tensors and all tensors whenever $n\leq d+1$. Our technical tools are border apolarity and border varieties of sums of powers.

On defective spans of singular vector tuples beyond the boundary format

In this paper, we study tensor spaces beyond the boundary format and analyze whether the general critical space coincides with the general span of singular vector tuples. For all tensor spaces exceeding the boundary format by one in an arbitrary number of factors, we relate the codimension of this span within the critical space to the dimension of the kernel of a map in cohomology. Furthermore, we exhibit an infinite family of order-three tensors with a defective behavior: the general span of singular vector tuples achieves the maximum possible codimension rather than the expected minimum. Finally, we conjecture a classification of the behavior of critical spaces in this regime and draw a connection to Koszul cohomology.

The ABCT Variety $V(3,n)$ is a Positive Geometry

The ABCT variety $V(3,n)$ is the image closure of the rational Veronese map from the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(2,n)$ to the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(3,n)$. It was studied by Arkani-Hamed--Bourjaily--Cachazo--Trnka in the context of tree-level scattering amplitudes arising in planar $\mathcal N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and Witten's twistor string theory. From this perspective, $V(3,n)$ is conjectured to be a positive geometry by Lam. In this paper, we study the combinatorial and algebraic geometry aspects of $V(3,n)$ and its subvarieties induced by iteratively taking analytic boundaries of the totally nonnegative part. We interpret these subvarieties as point configurations on $\mathbb{P}^2$ by the Gelfand-MacPherson correspondence. We construct a top-degree meromorphic form on $V(3,n)$ and show that it is a positive geometry, proving Lam's conjecture.

Polynomials of small slice rank and strength

This paper investigates defining equations for secant varieties of the variety of reducible polynomials, which geometrically encode the notions of strength and slice rank of homogeneous polynomials. We present three main results. First, we reinterpret Ruppert's classical equations for reducible ternary forms in the language of representation theory and we extend them to an arbitrary number of variables. Second, we construct new determinantal equations for polynomials of small strength based on syzygies of their partial derivatives. Finally, we establish a reduction theorem for cubic forms, proving that slice rank two is determined by generic linear sections in $14$ variables; this gives one of the few explicit upper bounds for defining equations for the image of a polynomial map in the framework of noetherianity for polynomial functors.

On the codimension of permanental varieties

In this article, we study permanental varieties, i.e. varieties defined by the vanishing of permanents of fixed size of a generic matrix. Permanents and their varieties play an important, and sometimes poorly understood, role in combinatorics. However, there are essentially no geometric results about them in the literature, in very sharp contrast to the well-behaved and ubiquitous case of determinants and minors. Motivated by the study of the singular locus of the permanental hypersurface, we focus on the codimension of these varieties. We introduce a $\mathbb C^{*}$-action on matrices and prove a number of results. In particular, we improve a lower bound on the codimension of the aforementioned singular locus established by von zur Gathen in 1987.

Border apolarity and varieties of sums of powers

We study border varieties of sums of powers ($\underline{\mathrm{VSP}}$'s for short), recently introduced by Buczyńska and Buczyński, parameterizing border rank decompositions of a point (e.g. of a tensor or a homogeneous polynomial) with respect to a smooth projective toric variety and living in the Haiman-Sturmfels multigraded Hilbert scheme. Their importance stems from the role of border tensor rank in theoretical computer science, especially in the estimation of the exponent of matrix multiplication, a fundamental and still unknown quantity in the theory of computation. We compare $\underline{\mathrm{VSP}}$'s to other well-known loci in the Hilbert scheme, parameterizing scheme-theoretic versions of decompositions. The latter ones are crucial in that they naturally explain the existing severe barriers to giving good lower bounds on ranks. We introduce the notion of border identifiability and provide sufficient criteria for its appearance, which rely on the multigraded regularity of Maclagan and Smith. We link border identifiability to wildness of points. Finally, we determine $\underline{\mathrm{VSP}}$'s in several instances and regimes, in the contexts of tensors and homogeneous polynomials. These include concise $3$-tensors of minimal border rank and in particular of border rank three.

A note on very ample Terracini loci

In this short note we show that, for any ample embedding of a variety of dimension at least two in a projective space, all high enough degree Veronese re-embeddings have non-empty Terracini loci.

On the Koiran-Skomra's question about Hessians

We give a negative answer to a question of Koiran and Skomra about Hessians, motivated by Kayal's algorithm for the equivalence problem to the Fermat polynomial. We conjecture that our counterexamples are the only ones. We also study a local version of their question.

Implicitisation and Parameterisation in Polynomial Functors

In earlier work, the second author showed that a closed subset of a polynomial functor can always be defined by finitely many polynomial equations. In follow-up work on $\operatorname{GL}\nolimits_{\infty}$-varieties, Bik-Draisma-Eggermont-Snowden showed, among other things, that in characteristic zero every such closed subset is the image of a morphism whose domain is the product of a finite-dimensional affine variety and a polynomial functor. In this paper, we show that both results can be made algorithmic: there exists an algorithm $\mathbf{implicitise}$ that takes as input a morphism into a polynomial functor and outputs finitely many equations defining the closure of the image; and an algorithm $\mathbf{parameterise}$ that takes as input a finite set of equations defining a closed subset of a polynomial functor and outputs a morphism whose image is that closed subset.

Degrees of Kalman varieties of tensors

Kalman varieties of tensors are algebraic varieties consisting of tensors whose singular vector $k$-tuples lay on prescribed subvarieties. They were first studied by Ottaviani and Sturmfels in the context of matrices. We extend recent results of Ottaviani and the first author to the partially symmetric setting. We describe a generating function whose coefficients are the degrees of these varieties and we analyze its asymptotics, providing analytic results à la Zeilberger and Pantone. We emphasize the special role of isotropic vectors in the spectral theory of tensors and describe the totally isotropic Kalman variety as a dual variety.

Quasihomomorphisms from the integers into Hamming metrics

A function $f: \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Q}^n$ is a $c$-quasihomomorphism if the Hamming distance between $f(x+y)$ and $f(x)+f(y)$ is at most $c$ for all $x,y \in \mathbb{Z}$. We show that any $c$-quasihomomorphism has distance at most some constant $C(c)$ to an actual group homomorphism; here $C(c)$ depends only on $c$ and not on $n$ or $f$. This gives a positive answer to a special case of a question posed by Kazhdan and Ziegler.

Rank and border rank of Kronecker powers of tensors and Strassen's laser method

We prove that the border rank of the Kronecker square of the little Coppersmith-Winograd tensor $T_{cw,q}$ is the square of its border rank for $q > 2$ and that the border rank of its Kronecker cube is the cube of its border rank for $q > 4$. This answers questions raised implicitly in [Coppersmith-Winograd, 1990] and explicitly in [Bläser, 2013] and rules out the possibility of proving new upper bounds on the exponent of matrix multiplication using the square or cube of a little Coppersmith-Winograd tensor in this range. In the positive direction, we enlarge the list of explicit tensors potentially useful for Strassen's laser method, introducing a skew-symmetric version of the Coppersmith-Winograd tensor, $T_{skewcw,q}$. For $q = 2$, the Kronecker square of this tensor coincides with the $3\times 3$ determinant polynomial, $\det_3 \in \mathbb{C}^9\otimes \mathbb{C}^9\otimes \mathbb{C}^9$, regarded as a tensor. We show that this tensor could potentially be used to show that the exponent of matrix multiplication is two. We determine new upper bounds for the (Waring) rank and the (Waring) border rank of $\det_3$, exhibiting a strict submultiplicative behaviour for $T_{skewcw,2}$ which is promising for the laser method. We establish general results regarding border ranks of Kronecker powers of tensors, and make a detailed study of Kronecker squares of tensors in $\mathbb{C}^3\otimes \mathbb{C}^3\otimes \mathbb{C}^3$.

The set of forms with bounded strength is not closed

The strength of a homogeneous polynomial (or form) is the smallest length of an additive decomposition expressing it whose summands are reducible forms. Using polynomial functors, we show that the set of forms with bounded strength is not always Zariski-closed. More specifically, if the ground field is algebraically closed, we prove that the set of quartics with strength $\leq3$ is not Zariski-closed for a large number of variables.

Tensors with maximal symmetries

We classify tensors with maximal and next to maximal dimensional symmetry groups under a natural genericity assumption (1-genericity), in dimensions greater than 7. In other words, we classify minimal dimensional orbits in the space of (m,m,m) tensors assuming 1-genericity. Our study uncovers new tensors with striking geometry. This paper was motivated by Strassen's laser method for bounding the exponent of matrix multiplication. The best known tensor for the laser method is the large Coppersmith-Winograd tensor, and our study began with the observation that it has a large symmetry group, of dimension m^2/2 +m/2. We show that in odd dimensions, this is the largest possible for a 1-generic tensor, but in even dimensions we exhibit a tensor with a larger dimensional symmetry group. In the course of the proof, we classify nondegenerate bilinear forms with large dimensional stabilizers, which may be of interest in its own right.

Strength and slice rank of forms are generically equal

We prove that strength and slice rank of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d \geq 5$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero coincide generically. To show this, we establish a conjecture of Catalisano, Geramita, Gimigliano, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel and Shin concerning dimensions of secant varieties of the varieties of reducible homogeneous polynomials. These statements were already known in degrees $2\leq d\leq 7$ and $d=9$.

Vanishing Hessian, wild forms and their border VSP

Wild forms are homogeneous polynomials whose smoothable rank is strictly larger than their border rank. The discrepancy between these two ranks is caused by the difference between the limit of spans of a family of zero-dimensional schemes and the span of their flat limit. For concise forms of minimal border rank, we show that the condition of vanishing Hessian is equivalent to being wild. This is proven by making a detour through structure tensors of smoothable and Gorenstein algebras. The equivalence fails in the non-minimal border rank regime. We exhibit an infinite series of minimal border rank wild forms of every degree $d\geq 3$ as well as an infinite series of wild cubics. Inspired by recent work on border apolarity of Buczyńska and Buczyński, we study the border varieties of sums of powers $\underline{\mathrm{VSP}}$ of these forms in the corresponding multigraded Hilbert schemes.

Geometric conditions for strict submultiplicativity of rank and border rank

The $X$-rank of a point $p$ in projective space is the minimal number of points of an algebraic variety $X$ whose linear span contains $p$. This notion is naturally submultiplicative under tensor product. We study geometric conditions that guarantee strict submultiplicativity. We prove that in the case of points of rank two, strict submultiplicativity is entirely characterized in terms of the trisecant lines to the variety. Moreover, we focus on the case of curves: we prove that for curves embedded in an even-dimensional projective space, there are always points for which strict submultiplicativity occurs, with the only exception of rational normal curves.
