Injective linear series of algebraic curves on quadrics

We study linear series on curves inducing injective morphisms to projective space, using zero-dimensional schemes and cohomological vanishings. Albeit projections of curves and their singularities are of central importance in algebraic geometry, basic problems still remain unsolved. In this note, we study cuspidal projections of space curves lying on irreducible quadrics (in arbitrary characteristic).

The strength for line bundles

We introduce the strength for sections of a line bundle on an algebraic variety. This generalizes the strength of homogeneous polynomials that has been recently introduced to resolve Stillman's conjecture, an important problem in commutative algebra. We establish the first properties of this notion and give some tool to obtain upper bounds on the strength in this framework. Moreover, we show some results on the usual strength such as the reducibility of the set of strength two homogeneous polynomials.

Towards a Geometric Approach to Strassen's Asymptotic Rank Conjecture

We make a first geometric study of three varieties in $\mathbb{C}^m \otimes \mathbb{C}^m \otimes \mathbb{C}^m$ (for each $m$), including the Zariski closure of the set of tight tensors, the tensors with continuous regular symmetry. Our motivation is to develop a geometric framework for Strassen's Asymptotic Rank Conjecture that the asymptotic rank of any tight tensor is minimal. In particular, we determine the dimension of the set of tight tensors. We prove that this dimension equals the dimension of the set of oblique tensors, a less restrictive class introduced by Strassen.

Singular Curves of Low Degree and Multifiltrations from Osculating Spaces

In order to study projections of smooth curves, we introduce multifiltrations obtained by combining flags of osculating spaces. We classify all configurations of singularities occurring for a projection of a smooth curve embedded by a complete linear system away from a projective linear space of dimension at most two. In particular, we determine all configurations of singularities of non-degenerate degree d rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^n$ when $d - n \leq 3$ and $d < 2n$. Along the way, we describe the Schubert cycles giving rise to these projections. We also reprove a special case of the Castelnuovo bound using these multifiltrations: under the assumption $d < 2n$, the arithmetic genus of any nondegenerate degree $d$ curve in $\mathbb{P}^n$ is at most $d - n$.

Entry loci and ranks

We study entry loci of varieties and their irreducibility from the perspective of $X$-ranks with respect to a projective variety $X$. These loci are the closures of the points that appear in an $X$-rank decomposition of a general point in the ambient space. We look at entry loci of low degree normal surfaces in $\mathbb P^4$ using Segre points of curves; the smooth case was classically studied by Franchetta. We introduce a class of varieties whose generic rank coincides with the one of its general entry locus, and show that any smooth and irreducible projective variety admits an embedding with this property.

Partially symmetric variants of Comon's problem via simultaneous rank

A symmetric tensor may be regarded as a partially symmetric tensor in several different ways. These produce different notions of rank for the symmetric tensor which are related by chains of inequalities. By exploiting algebraic tools such as apolarity theory, we show how the study of the simultaneous symmetric rank of partial derivatives of the homogeneous polynomial associated to the symmetric tensor can be used to prove equalities among different partially symmetric ranks. This approach aims to understand to what extent the symmetries of a tensor affect its rank. We apply this to the special cases of binary forms, ternary and quaternary cubics, monomials, and elementary symmetric polynomials.

The monic rank

We introduce the monic rank of a vector relative to an affine-hyperplane section of an irreducible Zariski-closed affine cone $X$. We show that the monic rank is finite and greater than or equal to the usual $X$-rank. We describe an algorithmic technique based on classical invariant theory to determine, in concrete situations, the maximal monic rank. Using this technique, we establish three new instances of a conjecture due to B. Shapiro which states that a binary form of degree $d\cdot e$ is the sum of $d$ $d$-th powers of forms of degree $e$. Furthermore, in the case where $X$ is the cone of highest weight vectors in an irreducible representation---this includes the well-known cases of tensor rank and symmetric rank---we raise the question whether the maximal rank equals the maximal monic rank. We answer this question affirmatively in several instances.

Labels of real projective varieties

Let $X$ be a complex projective variety defined over $\mathbb R$. Recently, Bernardi and the first author introduced the notion of admissible rank with respect to $X$. This rank takes into account only decompositions that are stable under complex conjugation. Such a decomposition carries a label, i.e., a pair of integers recording the cardinality of its totally real part. We study basic properties of admissible ranks for varieties, along with special examples of curves; for instance, for rational normal curves admissible and complex ranks coincide. Along the way, we introduce the scheme theoretic version of admissible rank. Finally, analogously to the situation of real ranks, we analyze typical labels, i.e., those arising as labels of a full-dimensional Euclidean open set. We highlight similarities and differences with typical ranks.

Strict inclusions of high rank loci

For a given projective variety $X$, the high rank loci are the closures of the sets of points whose $X$-rank is higher than the generic one. We show examples of strict inclusion between two consecutive high rank loci. Our first example is for the Veronese surface of plane quartics. Although Piene had already shown an example when $X$ is a curve, we construct infinitely many curves in $\mathbb P^4$ for which such strict inclusion appears. For space curves, we give two criteria to check whether the locus of points of maximal rank 3 is finite (possibly empty).

Minimal degree equations for curves and surfaces (variations on a theme of Halphen)

Many classical results in algebraic geometry arise from investigating some extremal behaviors that appear among projective varieties not lying on any hypersurface of fixed degree. We study two numerical invariants attached to such collections of varieties: their minimal degree and their maximal number of linearly independent smallest degree hypersurfaces passing through them. We show results for curves and surfaces, and pose several questions.

A note on the simultaneous Waring rank of monomials

In this paper we study the complex simultaneous Waring rank for collections of monomials. For general collections we provide a lower bound, whereas for special collections we provide a formula for the simultaneous Waring rank. Our approach is algebraic and combinatorial. We give an application to ranks of binomials and maximal simultaneous ranks. Moreover, we include an appendix of scripts written in the algebra software Macaulay2 to experiment with simultaneous ranks.

Real rank boundaries and loci of forms

In this article we study forbidden loci and typical ranks of forms with respect to the embeddings of $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ given by the line bundles $(2,2d)$. We introduce the Ranestad-Schreyer locus corresponding to supports of non-reduced apolar schemes. We show that, in those cases, this is contained in the forbidden locus. Furthermore, for these embeddings, we give a component of the real rank boundary, the hypersurface dividing the minimal typical rank from higher ones. These results generalize to a class of embeddings of $\mathbb P^n\times \mathbb P^1$. Finally, in connection with real rank boundaries, we give a new interpretation of the $2\times n \times n$ hyperdeterminant.

Phylogenetic complexity of the Kimura 3-parameter model

In algebraic statistics, the Kimura 3-parameter model is one of the most interesting and classical phylogenetic models. We prove that the ideals associated to this model are generated in degree four, confirming a conjecture by Sturmfels and Sullivant.

Real Rank Geometry of Ternary Forms

We study real ternary forms whose real rank equals the generic complex rank, and we characterize the semialgebraic set of sums of powers representations with that rank. Complete results are obtained for quadrics and cubics. For quintics we determine the real rank boundary: it is a hypersurface of degree 168. For quartics, sextics and septics we identify some of the components of the real rank boundary. The real varieties of sums of powers are stratified by discriminants that are derived from hyperdeterminants.

On the real rank of monomials

In this paper we study the real rank of monomials and we give an upper bound for the real rank of all monomials. We show that the real and the complex ranks of a monomial coincide if and only if the least exponent is equal to one.

Real and complex Waring rank of reducible cubic forms

In this paper, we study the real and the complex Waring rank of reducible cubic forms. In particular, we compute the complex rank of all reducible cubic forms. In the real case, for all reducible cubics, we either compute or bound the real rank depending on the signature of the degree two factor.
