Vortex dynamics and skyrmions in four to six dimensions: Coherence vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

I point out how coherence vortices, i.e., topological defects in a correlation function, could help explore new physics if they are created in matter waves. Vortex dynamics could be studied in up to six dimensions, and spin topological defects unseen in lower dimensions could be created. A rudimentary proof-of-principle experiment is sketched and simulated, in which three Bose-Einstein condensates are used to create and detect coherence vortices.

Temporal correlations of elongated Bose gases at finite temperature

Temporal correlations in the harmonically trapped finite temperature Bose gas are studied through the calculation of appropriate phase correlation functions. A wide parameter regime is covered to ascertain the role that temperature fluctuations and trap geometry play in the temporal coherence of the 1D to 3D crossover region. Bogoliubov analysis is used to establish results in the 1D and spherical limits. Formalism is then developed using the projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation to calculate correlation functions in 3D simulations of varying trap elongation and temperature.

Correlations and superfluidity of a one-dimensional Bose gas in a quasiperiodic potential

We consider the correlations and superfluid properties of a Bose gas in an external potential. Using a Bogoliubov scheme, we obtain expressions for the correlation function and the superfluid density in an arbitrary external potential. These expressions are applied to a one-dimensional system at zero temperature subject to a quasiperiodic modulation. The critical parameters for the Bose glass transition are obtained using two different criteria and the results are compared. The Lifshits glass is seen to be the limiting case for vanishing interactions.

Towards a Bose glass transition in an optical Penrose quasicrystal

We study numerically a 2D Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasiperiodic array of potential peaks, assumed to be generated by superimposing five blue detuned laser beams. By using a Bogoliubov ansatz for the excitations we show that the system approaches a gapless, insulating phase upon increasing the potential, consistent with a Bose glass phase. The characteristics of the transition in terms of phase correlations, oscillatory modes, and superfluid fraction are discussed.

Mott insulator dynamics

The hydrodynamics of a lattice Bose gas in a time-dependent external potential is studied in a mean-field approximation. The conditions under which a Mott insulating region can melt, and the local density adjust to the new potential, are determined. In the case of a suddenly switched potential, it is found that the Mott insulator stays insulating and the density will not adjust if the switch is too abrupt. This comes about because too rapid currents result in Bloch oscillation-type current reversals. For a stirrer moved through a Mott insulating cloud, it is seen that only if the stirrer starts in a superfluid region and the velocity is comparable to the time scale set by the tunneling, will the Mott insulator be affected.

Core sizes and dynamical instabilities of giant vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates

Motivated by a recent demonstration of cyclic addition of quantized vorticity into a Bose-Einstein condensate, the vortex pump, we study dynamical instabilities and core sizes of giant vortices. The core size is found to increase roughly as a square-root function of the quantum number of the vortex, whereas the strength of the dynamical instability either saturates to a fairly low value or increases extremely slowly for large quantum numbers. Our studies suggest that giant vortices of very high angular momenta may be achieved by gradually increasing the operation frequency of the vortex pump.

Rotating states for trapped bosons in an optical lattice

Rotational states for trapped bosons in an optical lattice are studied in the framework of the Hubbard model. Critical frequencies are calculated and the main parameter regimes are identified. Transitions are observed from edge superfluids to vortex lattices with Mott insulating cores, and subsequently to lattices of interstitial vortices. The former transition coincides with the Mott transition. Changes in symmetry of the vortex lattices are observed as a function of lattice depth. Predictions for experimental signatures are presented.

One-dimensional phase transitions in a two-dimensional optical lattice

A phase transition for bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional anisotropic optical lattice is considered. If the tunnelling rates in two directions are different, the system can undergo a transition between a two-dimensional superfluid and a one-dimensional Mott insulating array of strongly coupled tubes. The connection to other lattice models is exploited in order to better understand the phase transition. Critical properties are obtained using quantum Monte Carlo calculations. These critical properties are related to correlation properties of the bosons and a criterion for commensurate filling is established.

Mott transition in anharmonic confinement

Two effects are identified that affect the visibility of the Mott transition in an atomic gas in an optical lattice confined in a power-law potential. The transition can be made more pronounced by increasing the power law, but at the same time, experimental uncertainty in the number of particles will induce corresponding fluctuations in the measured condensate fraction. Calculations in two dimensions indicate that a potential slightly more flat-bottomed than a quadratic one is to be preferred for a wide range of particle number fluctuation size.

Transition from a two-dimensional superfluid to a one-dimensional Mott insulator

A two-dimensional system of atoms in an anisotropic optical lattice is studied theoretically. If the system is finite in one direction, it is shown to exhibit a transition between a two-dimensional superfluid and a one-dimensional Mott insulating chain of superfluid tubes. Monte Carlo simulations are consistent with the expectation that the phase transition is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. The effect of the transition on experimental time-of-flight images is discussed.

Long term dynamics of the splitting of a doubly quantized vortex in a two-dimensional condensate

We study the nonlinear dynamics of the splitting of a doubly quantized vortex in a trapped condensate. The dynamics is studied in detail by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The main dynamical features are explained in terms of a nonlinear three-level system. We find an analytical solution for the characteristics of the dynamics. It is concluded that the time scale for the splitting is mainly determined by the instability of the linearized system, and nonlinear effects contribute logarithmically.

Construction of a giant vortex state in a trapped Fermi system

A superfluid atomic Fermi system may support a giant vortex if the trapping potential is anharmonic. In such a potential, the single-particle spectrum has a positive curvature as a function of angular momentum. A tractable model is put up in which the lowest and next lowest Landau levels are occupied. Different parameter regimes are identified and characterized. Due to the dependence of the interaction on angular momentum quantum number, the Cooper pairing is at its strongest not only close to the Fermi level, but also close to the energy minimum. It is shown that the gas is superfluid in the interior of the toroidal density distribution and normal in the outer regions. Furthermore, the pairing may give rise to a localized density depression in configuration space.

Dynamical stability of a doubly quantized vortex in a three-dimensional condensate

The Bogoliubov equations are solved for a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate containing a doubly quantized vortex, trapped in a harmonic potential. Complex frequencies, signifying dynamical instability, are found for certain ranges of parameter values. The existence of alternating windows of stability and instability, respectively, is explained qualitatively and quantitatively using variational calculus and direct numerical solution. It is seen that the windows of stability are much smaller for a cigar shaped condensate than for a pancake shaped one, which is consistent with the findings of recent experiments.

One-dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model with a confining potential: a DMRG analysis

The extended Bose-Hubbard model in a quadratic trap potential is studied using a finite-size density-matrix renormalization group method (DMRG). We compute the boson density profiles, the local compressibility and the hopping correlation functions. We observed the phase separation induced by the trap in all the quantities studied and conclude that the local density approximation is valid in the extended Bose-Hubbard model. From the plateaus obtained in the local compressibility it was possible to obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous system which is in agreement with previous results.

Directed transport and Floquet analysis for a periodically kicked wavepacket at a quantum resonance

The dynamics of a kicked quantum mechanical wavepacket at a quantum resonance is studied in the framework of Floquet analysis. It is seen how a directed current can be created out of a homogeneous initial state at certain resonances in an asymmetric potential. The almost periodic parameter dependence of the current is found to be connected with level crossings in the Floquet spectrum.

Center of mass rotation and vortices in an attractive Bose gas

The rotational properties of an attractively interacting Bose gas are studied using analytical and numerical methods. We study perturbatively the ground state phase space for weak interactions, and find that in an anharmonic trap the rotational ground states are vortex or center of mass rotational states; the crossover line separating these two phases is calculated. We further show that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is a valid description of such a gas in the rotating frame and calculate numerically the phase space structure using this equation. It is found that the transition between vortex and center of mass rotation is gradual; furthermore the perturbative approach is valid only in an exceedingly small portion of phase space. We also present an intuitive picture of the physics involved in terms of correlated successive measurements for the center of mass state.

Ratchet effect for cold atoms in an optical lattice

The realization of a directed current for a quantum particle in a flashing asymmetric potential is studied. It is found that a positive current, i.e. in the direction expected for a conventional diffusive ratchet, can be attained at short times in the limit where the potential is weak and quantum diffusion dominates, while current reversal is obtained for stronger potentials. A single parameter, the ratio between the kicking frequency and the optical lattice potential strength, determines both the degree to which quantum effects dominate, and the possibility of obtaining a ratchet current. The effect should be readily observable in experiments.

Calculation of collective modes for the Bose-Hubbard model with confinement

The collective excitations in the Bose-Hubbard model in a trap are studied by means of numerical diagonalization in one dimension. The strength function is calculated for monopole and dipole perturbations, and moments of the strength function are utilized in order to obtain information about the collective behavior under external forces. In the superfluid regime, the spectrum is found to be exhausted by one single frequency, while in systems that contain a Mott insulating plateau several frequencies are excited. An explanation of recent experimental findings in terms of a Mott plateau is suggested.
