Period-doubled breathing in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

The response of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas to a periodic driving force is studied theoretically in the framework of the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The monopole mode is driven by periodical modulation of the frequency of the isotropic harmonic trapping potential. Period-doubled motion is shown to occur when the driving is strong and close to resonance with the monopole mode. A variational model predicts chaotic oscillations but is found to disagree with the full solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Dipole and monopole modes in the Bose-Hubbard model in a trap

The lowest-lying collective modes of a trapped Bose gas in an optical lattice are studied in the Bose-Hubbard model. An exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian is performed in a one-dimensional five-particle system in order to find the lowest few eigenstates. Dipole and breathing character of the eigenstates is confirmed in the limit where the tunneling dominates the dynamics, but under Mott-like conditions the excitations do not correspond to oscillatory modes.

Rotational states of Bose gases with attractive interactions in anharmonic traps

A rotated and harmonically trapped Bose gas with attractive interactions is expected to either remain stationary or escape from the trap. Here we report that, on the contrary, in an anharmonic trapping potential the Bose gas with attractive interactions responds to external rotation very differently, namely through center-of-mass motion or by formation of vortices, depending on the strengths of the interaction and the anharmonic term in the trapping potential.

Vortex nucleation in Bose-Einstein condensates in time-dependent traps

Vortex nucleation in a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a stirring potential is studied numerically using the zero-temperature, two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is found that this theory is able to describe the creation of vortices, but not the crystallization of a vortex lattice. In the case of a rotating, slightly anisotropic harmonic potential, the numerical results reproduce experimental findings, thereby showing that finite temperatures are not necessary for vortex excitation below the quadrupole frequency. In the case of a condensate subject to stirring by a narrow rotating potential, the process of vortex excitation is described by a classical model that treats the multitude of vortices created by the stirrer as a continuously distributed vorticity at the center of the cloud, but retains a potential flow pattern at large distances from the center.

Effective-action approach to a trapped Bose gas

The effective-action formalism is applied to a gas of bosons. The equations describing the condensate and the excitations are obtained using the loop expansion for the effective action. For a homogeneous gas the Beliaev expansion in terms of the diluteness parameter is identified in terms of the loop expansion. The loop expansion and the limits of validity of the well-known Bogoliubov and Popov equations are examined analytically for a homogeneous dilute Bose gas and numerically for a gas trapped in a harmonic-oscillator potential. The expansion to one-loop order, and hence the Bogoliubov equation, is shown to be valid for the zero-temperature trapped gas as long as the characteristic length of the trapping potential exceeds the s-wave scattering length.

Multiply quantized vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Vortex configurations in rotating Bose-Einstein condensed gases trapped in power-law and anharmonic potentials are studied. When the confining potential is steeper than harmonic in the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation, vortices with quantum numbers larger than one are energetically favorable if the interaction is weak enough. Features of the wave function for small and intermediate rotation frequencies are investigated numerically.

Hydrodynamic Approach to Vortex Lifetime in Trapped Bose Condensates

We study a vortex in a two-dimensional, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. Through a variational calculation using a trial condensate wave function and a nonlinear Schroedinger Lagrangian, we obtain the effective potential experienced by a vortex at an arbitrary position in the condensate, and find that an off-center vortex will move in a circular trajectory around the trap center. We find the frequency of this precession to be smaller than the elementary excitation frequencies in the cloud. We also study the radiation of sound from a moving vortex in an infinite, uniform system, and discuss the validity of this as an approximation for the trapped case. Furthermore, we estimate the lifetime of a vortex due to imperfections in the trapping potential.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein-Condensed Atomic Clouds

The properties of vortex states in a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of atoms are considered at zero temperature. Using both analytical and numerical methods we solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the case when a cloud of atoms containing a vortex is released from a trap. In two dimensions we find the simple result that the time dependence of the cloud radius is given by $(1+ω^2t^2)^{1/2}$, where $ω$ is the trap frequency. We calculate and compare the expansion of the vortex core and the cloud radius for different numbers of particles and interaction strengths, in both two and three dimensions, and discuss the circumstances under which vortex states may be observed experimentally.
