Waring decompositions of the product of two quadrics: the small rank cases

In this paper we study forms of the type $(x_1^2+ \cdots +x_m^2)(y_1^2+ \cdots+y_n^2)$ using projections. For $m=1, m=2$, and for any $n$ we describe: the forbidden locus, the structure and the Hilbert function of all minimal apolar sets. In particular, we show that every minimal apolar ideal has the same Hilbert function. Further, we compute the cactus rank, a bound on the border rank, and the dimension of the Variety of Sums of Powers. For $m,n \geq 3,$ we provide new lower and upper bounds for the Waring rank.

On the codimension of permanental varieties

In this article, we study permanental varieties, i.e. varieties defined by the vanishing of permanents of fixed size of a generic matrix. Permanents and their varieties play an important, and sometimes poorly understood, role in combinatorics. However, there are essentially no geometric results about them in the literature, in very sharp contrast to the well-behaved and ubiquitous case of determinants and minors. Motivated by the study of the singular locus of the permanental hypersurface, we focus on the codimension of these varieties. We introduce a $\mathbb C^{*}$-action on matrices and prove a number of results. In particular, we improve a lower bound on the codimension of the aforementioned singular locus established by von zur Gathen in 1987.

Simplices osculating rational normal curves

A classical result of von Staudt states that if eight planes osculate a twisted cubic curve and we divide them into two groups of four, then the eight vertices of the corresponding tetrahedra lie on a twisted cubic curve. In the current paper, we give an alternative proof of this result using modern tools, and at the same time we prove the analogous result for rational normal curves in any projective space. This higher dimensional generalization was claimed without proof in a paper of H.S. White in 1921.

Complete intersections on Veronese surfaces

In this paper we describe all possible reduced complete intersection sets of points on Veronese surfaces. We formulate a conjecture for the general case of complete intersection subvarieties of any dimension and we prove it in the case of the quadratic Veronese threefold. Our main tool is an effective characterization of all possible Hilbert functions of reduced subvarieties of Veronese surfaces.

Hadamard products of hypersurfaces

In this paper we, first, characterize hypersurfaces for which their Hadamard product is still a hypersurface. Then we pass to study hypersurfaces and, more generally, varieties which are idempotent under Hadamard powers.

Rational normal curves and Hadamard products

Given $r>n$ general hyperplanes in $\mathbb P^n,$ a star configuration of points is the set of all the $n$-wise intersection of them. We introduce {\it contact star configurations}, which are star configurations where all the hyperplanes are osculating to the same rational normal curve. In this paper we find a relation between this construction and Hadamard products of linear varieties. Moreover, we study the union of contact star configurations on a same conic in $\mathbb P^2$, we prove that the union of two contact star configurations has a special $h$-vector and, in some cases, this is a complete intersection.

Special apolar subset: the case of star configurations

In this paper we consider a generic degree $d$ form $ F $ in $n+1$ variables. In particular, we investigate the existence of star configurations apolar to $F$, that is the existence of apolar sets of points obtained by the $ n $-wise intersection of $ r $ general hyperplanes of $ \mathbb{P}^n $. We present a complete answer for all values of $(d,r,n)$ except for $(d,d+1,2)$ when we present an algorithmic approach.

Hilbert functions of schemes of double and reduced points

It remains an open problem to classify the Hilbert functions of double points in $\mathbb{P}^2$. Given a valid Hilbert function $H$ of a zero-dimensional scheme in $\mathbb{P}^2$, we show how to construct a set of fat points $Z \subseteq \mathbb{P}^2$ of double and reduced points such that $H_Z$, the Hilbert function of $Z$, is the same as $H$. In other words, we show that any valid Hilbert function $H$ of a zero-dimensional scheme is the Hilbert function of a set of a positive number of double points and some reduced points. For some families of valid Hilbert functions, we are also able to show that $H$ is the Hilbert function of only double points. In addition, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hilbert function of a scheme of a double points, or double points plus one additional reduced point, to be the Hilbert function of points with support on a star configuration of lines.

The Hitchhiker guide to: Secant Varieties and Tensor Decomposition

We consider here the problem, which is quite classical in Algebraic geometry, of studying the secant varieties of a projective variety $X$. The case we concentrate on is when $X$ is a Veronese variety, a Grassmannian or a Segre variety. Not only these varieties are among the ones that have been most classically studied, but a strong motivation in taking them into consideration is the fact that they parameterize, respectively, symmetric, skew-symmetric and general tensors, which are decomposable, and their secant varieties give a stratification of tensors via tensor rank. We collect here most of the known results and the open problems on this fascinating subject.

A note on the simultaneous Waring rank of monomials

In this paper we study the complex simultaneous Waring rank for collections of monomials. For general collections we provide a lower bound, whereas for special collections we provide a formula for the simultaneous Waring rank. Our approach is algebraic and combinatorial. We give an application to ranks of binomials and maximal simultaneous ranks. Moreover, we include an appendix of scripts written in the algebra software Macaulay2 to experiment with simultaneous ranks.

Hadamard Star Configurations

Bocci, Carlini, and Kileel have shown that the square-free Hadamard product of a finite set of points $Z$ that all lie on a line $\ell$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ produces a star configuration of codimension $n$. In this paper we introduce a construction using the Hadamard product to construct star configurations of codimension $c$. In the case that $c = n= 2$, our construction produces the star configurations of Bocci, Carlini, and Kileel. We will call any star configuration that can be constructed using our approach a Hadamard star configuration. Our main result is a classification of Hadamard star configurations.

On the Hilbert function of general fat points in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$

We study the bi-graded Hilbert function of ideals of general fat points with same multiplicity in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. Our first tool is the multiprojective-affine-projective method introduced by the second author in previous works with A.V. Geramita and A. Gimigliano where they solved the case of double points. In this way, we compute the Hilbert function when the smallest entry of the bi-degree is at most the multiplicity of the points. Our second tool is the differential Horace method introduced by J. Alexander and A. Hirschowitz to study the Hilbert function of sets of fat points in standard projective spaces. In this way, we compute the entire bi-graded Hilbert function in the case of triple points.

Waring loci and the Strassen conjecture

The Waring locus of a form F is the collection of the degree one forms appearing in some minimal sum of powers decomposition of F. In this paper, we give a complete description of Waring loci for several family of forms, such as quadrics, monomials, binary forms and plane cubics. We also introduce a Waring loci version of Strassen's Conjecture, which implies the original conjecture, and we prove it in many cases.

On the real rank of monomials

In this paper we study the real rank of monomials and we give an upper bound for the real rank of all monomials. We show that the real and the complex ranks of a monomial coincide if and only if the least exponent is equal to one.

Real and complex Waring rank of reducible cubic forms

In this paper, we study the real and the complex Waring rank of reducible cubic forms. In particular, we compute the complex rank of all reducible cubic forms. In the real case, for all reducible cubics, we either compute or bound the real rank depending on the signature of the degree two factor.

Hadamard Products of Linear Spaces

We describe properties of Hadamard products of algebraic varieties. We show any Hadamard power of a line is a linear space, and we construct star configurations from products of collinear points. Tropical geometry is used to find the degree of Hadamard products of other linear spaces.

Symmetric tensors: rank and Strassen's conjecture

In this paper we introduce the notion of linear computability as a method of finding the Waring rank of forms. We use this notion to find infinitely many new examples which satisfy Strassen's Conjecture.
