Symmetric tensors: rank and Strassen's conjecture

In this paper we introduce the notion of linear computability as a method of finding the Waring rank of forms. We use this notion to find infinitely many new examples which satisfy Strassen's Conjecture.

$e$-computable forms and the Strassen conjecture

In this paper we introduce the notion of $e$-computability as a method of finding the Waring rank of forms. We use this notion to find infinitely many new examples which satisfy Strassen's Conjecture.

Progress on the symmetric Strassen conjecture

Let F and G be homogeneous polynomials in disjoint sets of variables. We prove that the Waring rank is additive, thus proving the symmetric Strassen conjecture, when either F or G is a power, or F and G have two variables, or either F or G has small rank.

Reduced and non-reduced linear spaces: Lines and points

In this paper we consider the problem of determining the Hilbert function of schemes X of the proiective space P^n which are the generic union of s lines and one m-multiple point. We completely solve this problem for any s and m when n > 3. When n=3 we find several defective such schemes and conjecture that they are the only ones. We verify this conjecture in several cases.

Monomials as sum of k-th powers of forms

Motivated by recent results on the Waring problem for polynomial rings and representation of monomial as sum of powers of linear forms, we consider the problem of presenting monomials of degree kd as sums of k-th powers of forms of degree d. We produce a general bound on the number of summands for any number of variables which we refine in the two variables case. We completely solve the k=3 case for monomials in two and three variables.

The Waring rank of the sum of pairwise coprime monomials

In this paper we compute the Waring rank of any polynomial of the form F=M_1+...+M_r, where the M_i are pairwise coprime monomials, i.e., GCD(M_i,M_j)=1 for i not j. In particular, we determine the Waring rank of any monomial. As an application we show that certain monomials in three variables give examples of forms of rank higher than the generic form. As a further application we produce a sum of power decomposition for any form which is the sum of pairwise coprime monomials.

Star configurations on generic hypersurfaces

Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial in $S = \mathbb{C}[x_0,...,x_n]$. Our goal is to understand a particular polynomial decomposition of $F$; geometrically, we wish to determine when the hypersurface defined by $F$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ contains a star configuration. To solve this problem, we use techniques from commutative algebra and algebraic geometry to reduce our question to computing the rank of a matrix.

The Solution to Waring's Problem for Monomials

In the polynomial ring $T=k[y_1,...,y_n]$, with $n>1$, we bound the multiplicity of homogeneous radical ideals $I\subset (y_1^{a_1},...,y_n^{a_n})$ such that $T/I$ is a graded $k$-algebra with Krull dimension one. As a consequence we solve the Waring Problem for all monomials, i.e. we compute the minimal number of linear forms needed to write a monomial as a sum of powers of these linear forms. Moreover, we give an explicit description of a sum of powers decomposition for monomials. We also produce new bounds for the Waring rank of polynomials which are a sum of pairwise coprime monomials.

3-dimensional sundials

Robin Hartshorne and Alexander Hirschowitz proved that a generic collection of lines on $\mathbb P^n$, $n \geq 3$, has bipolynomial Hilbert Function. We extended this result to a specialization of the collection of generic lines, by considering a union of lines and $3$-dimensional sundials (i.e., a union of schemes obtained by degenerating pairs of skew lines).

Monomials as sums of powers: the Real binary case

We generalize an example, due to Sylvester, and prove that any monomial of degree $d$ in $\mathbb R[x_0, x_1]$, which is not a power of a variable, cannot be written as a linear combination of fewer than $d$ powers of linear forms.

Higher secant varieties of $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^m$ embedded in bi-degree $(1,d)$

Let $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ denote the Segre-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^m$ via the sections of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}(1,d)$. We study the dimensions of higher secant varieties of $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ and we prove that there is no defective $s^{th}$ secant variety, except possibly for $n$ values of $s$. Moreover when ${m+d \choose d}$ is multiple of $(m+n+1)$, the $s^{th}$ secant variety of $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ has the expected dimension for every $s$.

Star configuration points and generic plane curves

Consider l lines in P^2 such that no three lines meet in a point. Let X(l) denote all points of intersections of these l lines. We describe all pairs (d,l) such that generic degree d curve in P^2 contains a X(l).

Probability matrices, non-negative rank, and parameterizations of mixture models

In this paper we parameterize non-negative matrices of sum one and rank at most two. More precisely, we give a family of parameterizations using the least possible number of parameters. We also show how these parameterizations relate to a class of statistical models, known in Probability and Statistics as mixture models for contingency tables.

Geometry of diagonal-effect models for contingency tables

In this work we study several types of diagonal-effect models for two-way contingency tables in the framework of Algebraic Statistics. We use both toric models and mixture models to encode the different behavior of the diagonal cells. We compute the invariants of these models and we explore their geometrical structure.

A class of statistical models to weaken independence in two-way contingency tables

In this paper we study a new class of statistical models for contingency tables. We define this class of models through a subset of the binomial equations of the classical independence model. We use some notions from Algebraic Statistics to compute their sufficient statistic, and to prove that they are log-linear. Moreover, we show how to compute maximum likelihood estimates and to perform exact inference through the Diaconis-Sturmfels algorithm. Examples show that these models can be useful in a wide range of applications.

Hilbert Bases for Orthogonal Arrays

In this paper, we relate the problem of generating all 2-level orthogonal arrays of given dimension and force, i.e. elements in OA$(n,m)$, where $n$ is the number of factors and $m$ the force, to the solution of an Integer Programming problem involving rational convex cones. We do not restrict the number of points in the array, i.e. we admit any number of replications. This problem can be theoretically solved by means of Hilbert bases which form a finite generating set for all the elements in in the infinite set OA$(n,m)$. We discuss some examples which are explicitly solved with a software performing Hilbert bases computation.
