Dissipative self-assembly of colloidal suspensions

Suspensions of paramagnetic colloids exhibit kinetic arrest in strong magnetic fields. Through a dissipative process of toggling the field on and off, suspensions self-assemble into dense and dynamic steady-state phases. Based on the domain elongation, alpha- and contour-shapes, and degree of phase separation, we construct a phase diagram using a k-means clustering analysis. We identify six characteristic structural regimes: a structureless phase, an arrested structure, sheets, ribbons, a spiky phase, and a transient fluid-fluid regime. We further report the distribution and alignment of domains and the generality of the results. We model self-assembled domain shapes using an equilibrium mean-field magnetostatic energy calculation, which predicts the surprising emergence of highly-anisotropic structures driven by the sample's confinement.

Stan: An LLM-based thermodynamics course assistant

Discussions of AI in education focus predominantly on student-facing tools -- chatbots, tutors, and problem generators -- while the potential for the same infrastructure to support instructors remains largely unexplored. We describe Stan, a suite of tools for an undergraduate chemical engineering thermodynamics course built on a data pipeline that we develop and deploy in dual roles: serving students and supporting instructors from a shared foundation of lecture transcripts and a structured textbook index. On the student side, a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline answers natural-language queries by extracting technical terms, matching them against the textbook index, and synthesizing grounded responses with specific chapter and page references. On the instructor side, the same transcript corpus is processed through structured analysis pipelines that produce per-lecture summaries, identify student questions and moments of confusion, and catalog the anecdotes and analogies used to motivate difficult material -- providing a searchable, semester-scale record of teaching that supports course reflection, reminders, and improvement. All components, including speech-to-text transcription, structured content extraction, and interactive query answering, run entirely on locally controlled hardware using open-weight models (Whisper large-v3, Llama~3.1 8B) with no dependence on cloud APIs, ensuring predictable costs, full data privacy, and reproducibility independent of third-party services. We describe the design, implementation, and practical failure modes encountered when deploying 7--8 billion parameter models for structured extraction over long lecture transcripts, including context truncation, bimodal output distributions, and schema drift, along with the mitigations that resolved them.

A model colloidal gel for coordinated measurements of force, structure, and rheology

We introduce a model gel system in which colloidal forces, structure, and rheology are measured by balancing the requirements of rheological and microscopy techniques with those of optical tweezers. Sterically stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) colloids are suspended in cyclohexane (CH) and cyclohexyl bromide (CHB) with dilute polystyrene serving as a depletion agent. A solvent comprising of 37% weight fraction CH provides sufficient refractive index contrast to enable optical trapping, while maintaining good confocal imaging quality and minimal sedimentation effects on the bulk rheology. At this condition, and at a depletant concentration c = 8.64 mg/mL (c/c* = 0.81), results from optical trapping show that 50% of bonds rupture at 3.3 pN. The linear strain-dependent elastic modulus of the corresponding gel (volume fraction = 0.20) is G' = 1.8 Pa, and the mean contact number of the particles in the gel structure is 5.4. These structural and rheological parameters are similar to colloidal gels that are weakly aggregating and cluster-like. Thus, the model gel yields a concomitant characterization of the interparticle forces, microstructure, and bulk rheology in a single experimental system, thereby introducing the simultaneous comparison of these experimental measures to models and simulations.

Degenerate Rayleigh-Plateau instability in a magnetically annealed colloidal dispersion

This fluid dynamics video depicts the evolution of a suspension of paramagnetic colloids under the influence of a uniform, pulsed magnetic field. At low pulse frequencies, the suspension condenses into columns which decompose via a Rayleigh-Plateau instability. At high pulse frequencies, the suspension forms a kinetically arrested, system spanning network. We demonstrate the degeneration of the Rayleigh-Plateau instability with increasing pulse frequency.
