Metamorphosis of fractional instantons on a twisted $T^4$ with a double-trace deformation: a numerical study

We use numerical minimization of the lattice action of trace-deformed Yang-Mills theory on $T^4$ with twisted boundary conditions to find the classical minimum action configurations of fractional topological charge. We vary the twists and ratios of torus periods to interpolate between different $R^{4-k} \times T^k$ geometries. This allows us to see how the corresponding minimum action saddle point configurations -- monopole-instantons ($k=1$), center vortices ($k=2$), and fractional instantons ($k=3,4$) -- morph into each other. We also study how the transition between them depends on the presence of a deformation potential. In particular, we argue that the recent analytic picture of chains of monopole-instantons collimating their flux into center-vortex sheets, while technically relying on the deformation potential, also holds in pure Yang-Mills theory, for tori whose shape causes the abelianization due to the deformation to align with the one due to the twists. Our results also indicate that with nonzero deformation potential, some transitions between different minimal-action fractional charge configurations may be discontinuous and involve level crossing.

D-branes and fractional instantons on a twisted four torus: the moduli space as an N=2 supersymmetric Higgs branch

We study self-dual instantons of topological charge $Q=r/N$, for any natural $r$, in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on a four torus with 't Hooft twists, by embedding them into worldvolume theories of $D$-branes. To study their moduli, we construct the wrapped intersecting brane configurations dual to general constant field strength instanton backgrounds. We show that, locally, the moduli space is identified with the Higgs branch of an $N=2$ supersymmetric theory. This parameterization of the moduli space is equivalent to one recently found in field theory, but is obtained with significantly less effort and has manifest hyper-K\" ahler structure. Our hope is that combining different perspectives on instantons on the twisted torus will help understand the still unknown global structure of the moduli space for general solutions with $Q=r/N$ as well as the nature of instantons with all moduli turned on -- when some $Q<1$ and all $Q \ge 1$ instantons become space-time dependent. For integer $Q$, these are expected to match the ADHM solution in an appropriately taken infinite volume limit.

Mass-deformed Super Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb T^4$: sum over twisted sectors, $\mathbf{\theta}$-angle, and CP violation

We study $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory with a small gaugino mass $m$ and vacuum angle $\theta$ on the four-torus $\mathbb{T}^4$ with 't Hooft twisted boundary conditions. Introducing a detuning parameter $\Delta$, which measures the deviation from an exactly self-dual $\mathbb{T}^4$, and working in the limits $mLN \ll \Lambda LN \ll 1$ and $ \frac{(N-1) m^2 L^2}{4 \pi} \ll \Delta \ll 1$, where $L$ is the torus size and $\Lambda$ the strong-coupling scale, we compute the scalar and pseudo-scalar condensates to leading order in $m^2L^2/\Delta$. The twists generate fractional-charge instantons, and we show that summing over all such contributions is crucial for reproducing the correct physical observables in the decompactified strong-coupling regime. From a Hamiltonian perspective, the sum over twisted sectors, already at small torus size, projects in the $m=0$ limit onto a definite superselection sector of the $\mathbb{R}^4$ theory. In the massless limit, we recover the exact value of the gaugino condensate $|\langle \lambda \lambda \rangle| = 16\pi^2 \Lambda^3$, and demonstrate how a spurious $U(1)$ symmetry eliminates all $CP$-violating effects. Our results are directly testable in lattice simulations, and our method extends naturally to non-supersymmetric gauge theories.

On the moduli space of multi-fractional instantons on the twisted $\mathbb T^4$

The moduli space of self-dual $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills instantons on $\mathbb T^4$ of topological charge $Q = r/N$, $1 \leq r \leq N-1$, is of current interest, yet is not fully understood. In this paper, starting from 't Hooft's constant field strength ($F$) instantons, the only known exact solutions on $\mathbb T^4$, we explore the moduli space via analytical and lattice tools. These solutions are characterized by two positive integers $k, \ell$, $k+\ell=N$, and are self-dual for $\mathbb T^4$ sides $L_\mu$ tuned to $k L_1 L_2 = r \ell L_3 L_4$. For gcd$(k,r) = r$, we show, analytically and numerically (for $N = 3$) that the constant-$F$ solutions are the only self-dual solutions on the tuned $\mathbb T^4$, with $4r$ holonomy moduli. In contrast, when gcd$(k,r) \ne r$, we argue that the self-dual constant-$F$ solutions acquire, in addition to the $4\text{gcd}(k,r)$ holonomies, $4r - 4\text{gcd}(k,r)$ extra moduli, whose turning on makes the field strength nonabelian and non-constant. Thus, for gcd($k,r) \ne r$, 't Hooft's constant-$F$ solutions are a measure-zero subset of the moduli space on the tuned $\mathbb T^4$, a fact explaining a puzzle encountered in arXiv:2307.04795. We also show that, for $r = k = 2$, $N = 3$, the agreement between the approximate analytic solutions on the slightly detuned $\mathbb T^4$ and the $Q=2/3$ self-dual configurations obtained by minimizing the lattice action is remarkable.

The Nahm transform of multi-fractional instantons

We embed the multi-fractional instantons of $SU(N)$ gauge theories on $\mathbb T^4$ with 't Hooft twisted boundary conditions into $U(N)$ bundles and use the Nahm transform to study the corresponding configurations on the dual $\widehat{\mathbb T}^4$. We first show that $SU(N)$ fractional instantons of topological charge $Q={r \over N}$, $r \in \{1, 2,...,N-1\}$, are mapped to fractional instantons of $SU(\widehat N)$ of charge $\widehat Q = {r \over \widehat N}$, where $\widehat N = N q_1 q_3 - r q_3 + q_1$ and $q_{1,3}$ are integer-quantized $U(1)$ fluxes. We then explicitly construct the Nahm transform of constant field strength fractional instantons of $SU(N)$ and find the $SU(\widehat N)$ configurations they map to. Both the $\mathbb T^4$ instantons and their $\widehat {\mathbb T}^4$ images are self-dual for appropriately tuned torus periods. The Nahm duality can be extended to tori with detuned periods, with detuning parameter $\Delta$, mapping solutions with $\Delta >0$ on $\mathbb T^4$ to ones with $\widehat\Delta <0$ on $\widehat{\mathbb T}^4$. We also recall that fractional instantons appear in string theory precisely via the $U(N)$ embedding, suggesting that studying the end point of tachyon condensation for $\Delta \ne 0$ is needed -- and is perhaps feasible in a small-$\Delta$ expansion, as in field theory studies -- in order to understand the appearance and role of fractional instantons in $D$-brane constructions.

Higher-order gaugino condensates on a twisted $\mathbb T^4$: In the beginning was semi-classics

We compute the gaugino condensates, $\left\langle \prod_{i=1}^k \text{tr}(\lambda\lambda)(x_i) \right\rangle $ for $1$ $\leq$ $k$ $\le$ $N-1$, in $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory on a small four-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^4$, subject to 't Hooft twisted boundary conditions. Two recent advances are crucial to performing the calculations and interpreting the result: the understanding of generalized anomalies involving $1$-form center symmetry and the construction of multi-fractional instantons on the twisted $\mathbb T^4$. These self-dual classical configurations have topological charge $k/N$ and can be described as a sum over $k$ closely packed lumps in an instanton liquid. Using the path integral formalism, we perform the condensate calculations in the semi-classical limit and find, assuming gcd$(k,N)=1$, $\left\langle \prod_{i=1}^k \text{tr}(\lambda\lambda)(x_i) \right\rangle = {\bf n}^{-1} \; N^2\left(16\pi^2 \Lambda^3\right)^k$, where $\Lambda$ is the strong-coupling scale and ${\bf n}$ is a normalization constant. We determine the normalization constant, using path integral, as ${\bf n} = N^2$, which is $N$ times larger than the normalization used in our earlier publication arXiv:2210.13568. This finding resolves the extra-factor-of-$N$ discrepancy encountered there, aligning our results with those obtained through direct supersymmetric methods on $\mathbb R^4$. The normalization constant ${\bf n}$ can be understood within the Euclidean path-integral framework as the Witten index $I_W$. From the Hamiltonian approach, it is well-established that $I_W = N$. While the value ${\bf n} = N^2$ correctly reproduces the condensate result, this discrepancy between the Hamiltonian and path-integral formulations calls for reconciliation. We attempt to provide a potential solution we outline in our discussion.

Multi-fractional instantons in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on the twisted $\mathbb T^4$

We construct analytical self-dual Yang-Mills fractional instanton solutions on a four-torus $\mathbb{T}^4$ with 't Hooft twisted boundary conditions. These instantons possess topological charge $Q=\frac{r}{N}$, where $1\leq r< N$. To implement the twist, we employ $SU(N)$ transition functions that satisfy periodicity conditions up to center elements and are embedded into $SU(k)\times SU(\ell)\times U(1)\subset SU(N)$, where $\ell+k=N$. The self-duality requirement imposes a condition, $k L_1L_2=r\ell L_3L_4$, on the lengths of the periods of $\mathbb{T}^4$ and yields solutions with abelian field strengths. However, by introducing a detuning parameter $\Delta\equiv (r\ell L_3L_4-k L_1 L_2)/\sqrt{L_1 L_2L_3L_4}$, we generate self-dual nonabelian solutions on a general $\mathbb{T}^4$ as an expansion in powers of $\Delta$. We explore the moduli spaces associated with these solutions and find that they exhibit intricate structures. Solutions with topological charges greater than $\frac{1}{N}$ and $k\neq r $ possess non-compact moduli spaces, along which the $O(\Delta)$ gauge-invariant densities exhibit runaway behavior. On the other hand, solutions with $Q=\frac{r}{N}$ and $k=r$ have compact moduli spaces, whose coordinates correspond to the allowed holonomies in the $SU(r)$ color space. These solutions can be represented as a sum over $r$ lumps centered around the $r$ distinct holonomies, thus resembling a liquid of instantons. In addition, we show that each lump supports $2$ adjoint fermion zero modes.

Noninvertible anomalies in $SU(N)\times U(1)$ gauge theories

We study $4$-dimensional $SU(N)\times U(1)$ gauge theories with a single massless Dirac fermion in the $2$-index symmetric/antisymmetric representations and show that they are endowed with a noninvertible $0$-form $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ chiral symmetry along with a $1$-form $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ center symmetry. By using the Hamiltonian formalism and putting the theory on a spatial three-torus $\mathbb T^3$, we construct the non-unitary gauge invariant operator corresponding to $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and find that it acts nontrivially in sectors of the Hilbert space characterized by selected magnetic fluxes. When we subject $\mathbb T^3$ to $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ twists, for $N$ even, in selected magnetic flux sectors, the algebra of $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ fails to commute by a $\mathbb Z_2$ phase. We interpret this noncommutativity as a mixed anomaly between the noninvertible and the $1$-form symmetries. The anomaly implies that all states in the torus Hilbert space with the selected magnetic fluxes exhibit a two-fold degeneracy for arbitrary $\mathbb T^3$ size. The degenerate states are labeled by discrete electric fluxes and are characterized by nonzero expectation values of condensates. In an Appendix, we also discuss how to construct the corresponding noninvertible defect via the ``half-space gauging'' of a discrete one-form magnetic symmetry.

The gaugino condensate from asymmetric four-torus with twists

We calculate the gaugino condensate in $SU(2)$ super Yang-Mills theory on an asymmetric four-torus $\mathbb T^4$ with 't Hooft's twisted boundary conditions. The $\mathbb T^4$ asymmetry is controlled by a dimensionless detuning parameter $Δ$, proportional to $L_3 L_4 - L_1 L_2$, with $L_i$ denoting the $\mathbb T^4$ periods. We perform our calculations via a path integral on a $\mathbb T^4$. Its size is taken much smaller than the inverse strong scale $Λ$ and the theory is well inside the semi-classical weak-coupling regime. The instanton background, constructed for $Δ\ll 1$ in arXiv:hep-th/0007113, has fractional topological charge $Q=\frac{1}{2}$ and supports two gaugino zero modes, yielding a non-vanishing bilinear condensate, which we find to be $Δ$-independent. Further, the theory has a mixed discrete chiral/$1$-form center anomaly leading to double degeneracy of the energy eigenstates on any size torus with 't Hooft twists. In particular, there are two vacua, $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$, that are exchanged under chiral transformation. Using this information, the $Δ$-independence of the condensate, and assuming further that the semi-classical theory is continuously connected to the strongly-coupled large-$\mathbb T^4$ regime, we determine the numerical coefficient of the gaugino condensate: $\langle 0| \mbox{tr}λλ|0\rangle=|\langle 1| \mbox{tr}λλ|1\rangle|=32π^2 Λ^3$, a result equal to twice the known $\mathbb R^4$ value. We discuss possible loopholes in the continuity approach that may lead to this discrepancy.

Gauge theory geography: charting a path between semiclassical islands

We study two semiclassical limits of $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory on a spatial torus with a 't Hooft twist: the ``femtouniverse,'' where all $\mathbb{T}^3$ directions are small, and deformed Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{T}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$, with small $\mathbb{S}^1$ and large or infinite $\mathbb{T}^2$. Carefully defining the symmetries, we show that the classical ground states, while different, have the same transformation properties under the 1-form center symmetry and parity. We argue that this is behind the identical multi-branch $\theta$-dependent vacuum structure of these theories. We then calculate the one-loop potential for the $\mathbb{S}^1$-holonomy in the presence of twists on $\mathbb{T}^2$. We use it to study the quantum stability of the semiclassical ground states in gauge theories with massive or massless adjoint fermions on spatial $\mathbb{T}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$, with a twist in the $\mathbb{T}^2$. The results point towards some interesting features worthy of further study.

Nonperturbative effects in the Standard Model with gauged 1-form symmetry

We study the Standard Model with gauged $\mathbb Z_{N=2,3,6}^{(1)}$ subgroups of its $\mathbb Z_6^{(1)}$ 1-form global symmetry, making the gauge group $SU(3) \times SU(2)\times U(1) \over \mathbb Z_N$. We show that, on a finite $\mathbb T^3$, there are self-dual instantons of fractional topological charge. They mediate baryon- and lepton-number violating processes. We compare their amplitudes to the ones due to the usual BPST-instantons. We find that the small hypercharge coupling suppresses the fractional-instanton contribution, unless the torus size is taken sub-Planckian, or extra matter is added above the weak scale. We also discuss these results in light of the cosmological bounds on the torus size.

Notes on Confinement on $\mathbf{R^3 \times S^1}$: From Yang-Mills, super-Yang-Mills, and QCD(adj) to QCD(F)

This is a pedagogical introduction to the physics of confinement on $R^3 \times S^1$, using $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills with massive or massless adjoint fermions as the prime example; at the end, we also add fundamental flavours. The small-$S^1$ limit is remarkable, allowing for controlled semiclassical determination of the nonperturbative physics in these, mostly non-supersymmetric, theories. We begin by reviewing the Polyakov confinement mechanism on $R^3$. Moving on to $R^3 \times S^1$, we show how introducing adjoint fermions stabilizes center symmetry, leading to abelianization and semiclassical calculability. We explain how monopole-instantons and twisted monopole-instantons arise. We describe the role of various novel topological excitations in extending Polyakov's confinement to the locally four-dimensional case, discuss the nature of the confining string, and the $\theta$-angle dependence.~We study the global symmetry realization and, when available, present evidence for the absence of phase transitions as a function of the $S^1$ size. As our aim is not to cover all work on the subject, but to prepare the interested reader for its study, we also include brief descriptions of topics not covered in detail: the necessity for analytic continuation of path integrals, the study of more general theories, and the 't Hooft anomalies involving higher-form symmetries.

The mixed $0$-form/$1$-form anomaly in Hilbert space: pouring new wine into old bottles

We study four-dimensional gauge theories with arbitrary simple gauge group with $1$-form global center symmetry and $0$-form parity or discrete chiral symmetry. We canonically quantize on $\mathbb{T}^3$, in a fixed background field gauging the $1$-form symmetry. We show that the mixed $0$-form/$1$-form 't Hooft anomaly results in a central extension of the global-symmetry operator algebra. We determine this algebra in each case and show that the anomaly implies degeneracies in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian at any finite-size torus. We discuss the consistency of these constraints with both older and recent semiclassical calculations in $SU(N)$ theories, with or without adjoint fermions, as well as with their conjectured infrared phases.

Confinement on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ and Double-String Collapse

We study confining strings in ${\cal{N}}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills theory in the semiclassical regime on $\mathbb{R}^{1,2} \times \mathbb{S}^1$. Static quarks are expected to be confined by double strings composed of two domain walls - which are lines in $\mathbb{R}^2$ - rather than by a single flux tube. Each domain wall carries part of the quarks' chromoelectric flux. We numerically study this mechanism and find that double-string confinement holds for strings of all $N$-alities, except for those between fundamental quarks. We show that, for $N_c \ge 5$, the two domain walls confining unit $N$-ality quarks attract and form non-BPS bound states, collapsing to a single flux line. We determine the $N$-ality dependence of the string tensions for $2 \le N_c \le 10$. Compared to known scaling laws, we find a weaker, almost flat $N$-ality dependence, which is qualitatively explained by the properties of BPS domain walls. We also quantitatively study the behavior of confining strings upon increasing the $\mathbb{S}^1$ size by including the effect of virtual "$W$-bosons" and show that the qualitative features of double-string confinement persist.

Topological terms and anomaly matching in effective field theories on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$: I. Abelian symmetries and intermediate scales

We explicitly calculate the topological terms that arise in IR effective field theories for $SU(N)$ gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$ by integrating out all but the lightest modes. We then show how these terms match all global-symmetry 't Hooft anomalies of the UV description. We limit our discussion to theories with abelian 0-form symmetries, namely those with one flavour of adjoint Weyl fermion and one or zero flavours of Dirac fermions. While anomaly matching holds as required, it takes a different form than previously thought. For example, cubic- and mixed-$U(1)$ anomalies are matched by local background-field-dependent topological terms (background TQFTs) instead of chiral-lagrangian Wess-Zumino terms. We also describe the coupling of 0-form and 1-form symmetry backgrounds in the magnetic dual of super-Yang-Mills theory in a novel way, valid throughout the RG flow and consistent with the monopole-instanton 't Hooft vertices. We use it to discuss the matching of the mixed chiral-center anomaly in the magnetic dual.

Generalized 't Hooft anomalies on non-spin manifolds

We study the mixed anomaly between the discrete chiral symmetry and general baryon-color-flavor (BCF) backgrounds in $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories with $N_f$ flavors of Dirac fermions in representations ${\cal R}_c$ of $N$-ality $n_c$, formulated on non-spin manifolds. We show how to study these theories on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ by turning on general BCF fluxes consistent with the fermion transition functions. We consider several examples in detail and argue that matching the anomaly on non-spin manifolds places stronger constraints on the infrared physics, compared to the ones on spin manifolds (e.g.~$\mathbb{T}^4$). We also show how to consistently formulate various chiral gauge theories on non-spin manifolds.

Deconfinement on axion domain walls

We study $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories with Dirac fermions in representations ${\cal{R}}$ of nonzero $N$-ality, coupled to axions. These theories have an exact discrete chiral symmetry, which has a mixed 't Hooft anomaly with general baryon-color-flavor backgrounds, called the "BCF anomaly" in arXiv:1909.09027. The infrared theory also has an emergent $\mathbb Z_{N_c}^{(1)}$ $1$-form center symmetry. We show that the BCF anomaly is matched in the infrared by axion domain walls. We argue that $\mathbb Z_{N_c}^{(1)}$ is spontaneously broken on axion domain walls, so that nonzero $N$-ality Wilson loops obey the perimeter law and probe quarks are deconfined on the walls. We give further support to our conclusion by using a calculable small-circle compactification to study the multi-scale structure of the axion domain walls and the microscopic physics of deconfinement on their worldvolume.

Domain walls and deconfinement: a semiclassical picture of discrete anomaly inflow

We study the physics of quark deconfinement on domain walls in four-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, compactified on a small circle with supersymmetric boundary conditions. We numerically examine the properties of BPS domain walls connecting vacua k units apart. We also determine their electric fluxes and use the results to show that Wilson loops of any nonzero N-ality exhibit perimeter law on all k-walls. Our results confirm and extend, to all N and k, the validity of the semiclassical picture of deconfinement of Anber, Sulejmanpasic and one of us (EP), arXiv:1501.06773, providing a microscopic explanation of mixed 0-form/1-form anomaly inflow.
