On the baryon-color-flavor (BCF) anomaly in vector-like theories

We consider the most general fractional background fluxes in the color, flavor, and baryon number directions, compatible with the faithful action of the global symmetry of a given theory. We call the obstruction to gauging symmetries revealed by such backgrounds the baryon-color-flavor (BCF) 't Hooft anomaly. We apply the BCF anomaly to vector-like theories, with fermions in higher-dimensional representations of arbitrary N-ality, and derive non-trivial constraints on their IR dynamics. In particular, this class of theories enjoys an independent discrete chiral symmetry and one may ask about the fate of this symmetry in the background of BCF fluxes. We show that, under certain conditions, an anomaly between the chiral symmetry and the BCF background rules out massless composite fermions as the sole player in the IR: either the composites do not form or additional contributions to the matching of the BCF anomaly are required. We can also give a flavor-symmetric mass to the fermions, smaller than or of order the strong scale of the theory, and examine the $θ$-angle periodicity of the theory in the BCF background. Interestingly, we find that the conditions that rule out the composites are the exact same conditions that lead to an anomaly of the $θ$ periodicity: the massive theory will experience a phase transition as we vary $θ$ from $0$ to $2π$.

Domain walls in high-T SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory and QCD(adj)

We study the domain walls in hot $4$-D $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory and QCD(adj), with $n_f$ Weyl flavors. We find that the $k$-wall worldvolume theory is $2$-D QCD with gauge group $SU(N-k)\times SU(k) \times U(1)$ and Dirac fermions charged under $U(1)$ and transforming in the bi-fundamental representation of the nonabelian factors. We show that the DW theory has a $1$-form $\mathbb Z_{N}^{(1)}$ center symmetry and a $0$-form $\mathbb Z_{2Nn_f}^{dχ}$ discrete chiral symmetry, with a mixed 't Hooft anomaly consistent with bulk/wall anomaly inflow. We argue that $\mathbb Z_{N}^{(1)}$ is broken on the wall, and hence, Wilson loops obey the perimeter law. The breaking of the worldvolume center symmetry implies that bulk $p$-strings can end on the wall, a phenomenon first discovered using string-theoretic constructions. We invoke $2$-D bosonization and gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models to suggest that $\mathbb Z_{2Nn_f}^{dχ}$ is also broken in the IR, which implies that the $0$-form/$1$-form mixed 't Hooft anomaly in the gapped $k$-wall theory is saturated by a topological quantum field theory. We also find interesting parallels between the physics of high-temperature domain walls studied here and domain walls between chiral symmetry breaking vacua in the zero temperature phase of the theory (studied earlier in the semiclassically calculable small spatial circle regime), arising from the similar mode of saturation of the relevant 't Hooft anomalies.

A possible phase for adjoint QCD

We discuss an exotic phase that adjoint QCD possibly exhibits in the deep infrared (IR). It is a confining phase, with a light spectrum consisting of massless composite fermions. The discrete chiral symmetry is broken, with unbroken continuous chiral symmetry. We argue that it may give a description of the IR of adjoint QCD with three massless Weyl flavors and that it passes all consistency checks known to us.

Anomaly matching, (axial) Schwinger models, and high-T super Yang-Mills domain walls

We study the discrete chiral- and center-symmetry 't Hooft anomaly matching in the charge-$q$ two-dimensional Schwinger model. We show that the algebra of the discrete symmetry operators involves a central extension, implying the existence of $q$ vacua, and that the chiral and center symmetries are spontaneously broken. We then argue that an axial version of the $q$$=$$2$ model appears in the worldvolume theory on domain walls between center-symmetry breaking vacua in the high-temperature $SU(2)$ ${\cal N}$$=$$1$ super-Yang-Mills theory and that it inherits the discrete 't Hooft anomalies of the four-dimensional bulk. The Schwinger model results suggest that the high-temperature domain wall exhibits a surprisingly rich structure: it supports a non-vanishing fermion condensate and perimeter law for spacelike Wilson loops, thus mirroring many properties of the strongly coupled four-dimensional low-temperature theory. We also discuss generalizations to theories with multiple adjoint fermions and possible lattice tests.

Two-flavor adjoint QCD

We study four dimensional $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory with two massless adjoint Weyl fermions. When compactified on a spatial circle of size $L$ much smaller than the strong-coupling scale, this theory can be solved by weak-coupling nonperturbative semiclassical methods. We study the possible realizations of symmetries in the $\mathbb R^4$ limit and find that all continuous and discrete $0$-form and $1$-form 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions are saturated by a symmetry realization and massless spectrum identical to that found in the small-$L$ limit, with only a single massless flavor-doublet fermion in the infrared. This observation raises the possibility that the class of theories which undergo no phase transition between the analytically-solvable small-size circle and strongly-coupled infinite-size circle is larger than previously thought, and offers new challenges for lattice studies.

New nonperturbative scales and glueballs in confining supersymmetric gauge theories

We show that new nonperturbative scales exist in four-dimensional ${\cal{N}}$$=$$1$ super-Yang-Mills theory compactified on a circle, with an iterated-exponential dependence on the inverse gauge coupling. The lightest states with the quantum numbers of four-dimensional glueballs are nonrelativistic bound states of dual Cartan gluons and superpartners, with binding energy equal to $e^{- e^{1/g^2}}$ in units of the confining mass gap. Focusing on $SU(2)$ gauge group, we construct the nonrelativistic effective theory, show that the lightest glueball/glueballino states fill a chiral supermultiplet, and determine their "doubly-nonperturbative" binding energy. The iterated-exponential dependence on the gauge coupling is due to nonperturbative couplings in the long distance theory, $λ\sim e^{-{1 \over g^2}}$, which are responsible for attractive interactions, in turn producing exponentially small, $\sim e^{-{1\over λ}}$, effects.

String tensions in deformed Yang-Mills theory

We study k-strings in deformed Yang-Mills (dYM) with SU(N) gauge group in the semiclassically calculable regime on ${\rm I\!R}^3 \times S^1$. Their tensions T$_{\text{k}}$ are computed in two ways: numerically, for $2$ $\le$ N $\le$ $10$, and via an analytic approach using a re-summed perturbative expansion. The latter serves both as a consistency check on the numerical results and as a tool to analytically study the large-N limit. We find that dYM k-string ratios T$_{\text{k}}$/T$_{\text{1}}$ do not obey the well-known sine- or Casimir-scaling laws. Instead, we show that the ratios T$_{\text{k}}$/T$_{\text{1}}$ are bound above by a square root of Casimir scaling, previously found to hold for stringlike solutions of the MIT Bag Model. The reason behind this similarity is that dYM dynamically realizes, in a theoretically controlled setting, the main model assumptions of the Bag Model. We also compare confining strings in dYM and in other four-dimensional theories with abelian confinement, notably Seiberg-Witten theory, and show that the unbroken $Z_N$ center symmetry in dYM leads to different properties of k-strings in the two theories; for example, a "baryon vertex" exists in dYM but not in softly-broken Seiberg-Witten theory. Our results also indicate that, at large values of N, k-strings in dYM do not become free.

QCD on a small circle

QCD-like theories can be engineered to remain in a confined phase when compactified on an arbitrarily small circle, where their features may be studied quantitatively in a controlled fashion. Previous work has elucidated the generation of a non-perturbative mass gap and the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in this regime. Here, we study the rich spectrum of hadronic states, including glueball, meson, and baryon resonances. We find an exponentially growing Hagedorn density of states, as well as the emergence of non-perturbative energy scales given by iterated exponentials of the inverse Yang-Mills coupling $g^2$.

Emergent Dimensions and Braneworlds from Large-N Confinement

$\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ is believed to have a smooth dependence on the circle size $L$. Making $L$ small leads to calculable non-perturbative color confinement, mass gap, and string tensions. For finite $N$, the small-$L$ low-energy dynamics is described by a three-dimensional effective theory. The large-$N$ limit, however, reveals surprises: the infrared dual description is in terms of a theory with an emergent fourth dimension, curiously reminiscent of T-duality in string theory. Here, however, the emergent dimension is a lattice, with momenta related to the $S^1$-winding of the gauge field holonomy, which takes values in $\mathbb{Z}_N$. Furthermore, the low-energy description is given by a non-trivial gapless theory, with a space-like $z=2$ Lifshitz scale invariance and operators that pick up anomalous dimensions as $L$ is increased. Supersymmetry-breaking deformations leave the long-distance theory scale-invariant, but change the Lifshitz scaling exponent to $z=1$, and lead to an emergent Lorentz symmetry at small $L$. Adding a small number of fundamental fermion fields leads to matter localized on three-dimensional branes in the emergent four-dimensional theory.

The curious incident of multi-instantons and the necessity of Lefschetz thimbles

We show that compatibility of supersymmetry with exact semi-classics demands that in calculating multi-instanton amplitudes, the "separation" quasi-zeromode must be complexified and the integration cycles must be found by using complex gradient flow (or Picard-Lefschetz equations.) As a non-trivial application, we study $\mathcal N=2$ extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Even though in this case supersymmetry is unbroken, the instanton-anti-instanton amplitude (naively calculated) seems to contribute to the ground state energy. We show, however, that the instanton-anti-instanton event consists of two parts: a fermion-correlated and a scalar-correlated event. Although both of these contributions are naively of the same sign and the latter is superficially higher order in the perturbative coupling, we show that the two contributions exactly cancel when they are evaluated on Lefschetz thimbles due to their relative Hidden Topological Angles (HTAs). This gives strong evidence that the semi-classical expansion using Lefschetz thimbles is not only a meaningful prescription for higher order semi-classics, but a necessary one. This deduction seems to be universal and applicable to both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric theories. In conclusion we speculate that similar conspiracies are responsible for the non-formation of certain molecular contributions in theories where instantons have more than two fermionic zeromodes and do not contribute to the superpotential.

On the Global Structure of Deformed Yang-Mills Theory and QCD(adj) on $\mathbb R^3 \times \mathbb S^1$

Spatial compactification on $\mathbb R^{3} \times \mathbb S^1_L$ at small $\mathbb S^1$-size $L$ often leads to a calculable vacuum structure, where various "topological molecules" are responsible for confinement and the realization of the center and discrete chiral symmetries. Within this semiclassically calculable framework, we study how distinct theories with the same $SU(N_c)/\mathbb Z_k$ gauge group (labeled by "discrete $θ$-angles") arise upon gauging of appropriate $\mathbb Z_k$ subgroups of the one-form global center symmetry of an $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory. We determine the possible $\mathbb Z_k$ actions on the local electric and magnetic effective degrees of freedom, find the ground states, and use domain walls and confining strings to give a physical picture of the vacuum structure of the different $SU(N_c)/\mathbb Z_k$ theories. Some of our results reproduce ones from earlier supersymmetric studies, but most are new and do not invoke supersymmetry. We also study a further finite-temperature compactification to $\mathbb R^{2}\times \mathbb S^1_β\times\mathbb S^1_L$. We argue that, in deformed Yang-Mills theory, the effective theory near the deconfinement temperature $β_c \gg L$ exhibits an emergent Kramers-Wannier duality and that it exchanges high- and low-temperature theories with different global structure, sharing features with both the Ising model and $S$-duality in ${\cal N}$$=$$4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

Strings from domain walls in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and adjoint QCD

We study strings between static quarks in QCD with $n_f$ adjoint fermions, including $N=1$ Super Yang-Mills (SYM), in the calculable regime on $\mathbb R^3\times \mathbb S^1$. We find that they have many qualitatively new features not previously known. The difference from other realizations of abelian confinement is due to the composite nature of magnetic bions, whose Dirac quantum with fundamental quarks is two, and to the unbroken part of the Weyl group. In particular we show that strings are composed of two domain walls, that quarks are not confined on domain walls, that strings can end on domain walls, and that "Y" or "$Δ$" baryons can form. We briefly discuss their lightest modes and decompactification limit.

Deconfinement and continuity between thermal and (super) Yang-Mills theory for all gauge groups

We study the phase structure of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on R^3XS^1, with massive gauginos, periodic around the S^1, with Sp(2N) (N>=2), Spin(N) (N>=5), G_2, F_4, E_6, E_7, E_8 gauge groups. As the gaugino mass m is increased, with S^1 size and strong coupling scale fixed, we find a first-order phase transition both for theories with and without a center. This semiclassically calculable transition is driven, as in SU(N) and G_2, arxiv.org/abs/1205.0290 and arxiv.org/abs/1212.1238, by a competition between monopole-instantons and exotic topological "molecules"---"neutral" or "magnetic" bions. We compute the trace of the Polyakov loop and its two-point correlator near the transition. We find a behavior similar to the one observed near the thermal deconfinement transition in the corresponding pure Yang-Mills (YM) theory in lattice studies (whenever available). Our results lend further support to the conjectured continuity, as a function of m, between the quantum phase transition studied here and the thermal deconfinement transition in YM theory. We also study the theta-angle dependence of the transition, elaborate on the importance of the quantum-corrected moduli-space metric at large N, and offer comments for the future.

On the decoupling of mirror fermions

We study an approach to chiral gauge theories on the lattice that involves decoupling "mirror" fermions from a vector-like theory. We have computed the polarization tensor in the "3-4-5" theory and find a directional discontinuity that appears to be nonzero in the continuum limit. This strongly suggests that the mirror fermions do not decouple.

Deconfinement in N=1 super Yang-Mills theory on R^3 x S^1 via dual-Coulomb gas and "affine" XY-model

We study finite-temperature N=1 SU(2) super Yang-Mills theory, compactified on a spatial circle of size L with supersymmetric boundary conditions. In the semiclassical small-L regime, a deconfinement transition occurs at T_c <<1/L. The transition is due to a competition between non-perturbative topological "molecules"---magnetic and neutral bion-instantons---and electrically charged W-bosons and superpartners. Compared to deconfinement in non-supersymmetric QCD(adj) arXiv:1112.6389, the novelty is the relevance of the light modulus scalar field. It mediates interactions between neutral bions (and W-bosons), serves as an order parameter for the Z_2^{L} center symmetry associated with the non-thermal circle, and explicitly breaks the electric-magnetic (Kramers-Wannier) duality enjoyed by non-supersymmetric QCD(adj) near T_c. We show that deconfinement can be studied using an effective two-dimensional gas of electric and magnetic charges with (dual) Coulomb and Aharonov-Bohm interactions, or, equivalently, via an XY-spin model with a symmetry-breaking perturbation, where each system couples to the scalar field. To study the realization of the discrete R-symmetry and the Z_2^{beta} thermal and Z_2^{L} non-thermal center symmetries, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of both systems. The dual-Coulomb gas simulations are a novel way to analyze deconfinement and provide a new venue to study the phase structure of a class of two-dimensional condensed matter models that can be mapped into dual-Coulomb gases. Our results indicate a continuous deconfinement transition, with Z_2^{L} remaining unbroken at the transition. Thus, the SYM transition appears similar to the one in SU(2) QCD(adj) arXiv:1112.6389 and is also likely to be characterized by continuously varying critical exponents.

(S)QCD on R^3 x S^1: Screening of Polyakov loop by fundamental quarks and the demise of semi-classics

Recently, it was argued that the thermal deconfinement transition in pure Yang-Mills theory is continuously connected to a quantum phase transition in softly-broken N=1 SYM theory on R^3 x S^1. The transition is semiclassically calculable at small S^1 size L, occurs as the soft mass m_soft and L vary, and is driven by a competition between perturbative effects and nonperturbative topological molecules. These are correlated instanton--anti-instanton tunneling events, whose constituents are monopole-instantons "bound" by attractive long-range forces. The mechanism driving the transition is universal for all simple gauge groups, with or without a center, such as SU(N) or G_2. Here, we consider theories with fundamental quarks. We examine the role topological objects play in determining the fate of the (exact or approximate) center-symmetry in SU(2) SQCD, with or without soft-breaking terms. In theories whose large-m_soft limit is thermal nonsupersymmetric QCD with massive quarks, we find a crossover of the Polyakov loop, from approximately center-symmetric at small 1/L to maximally center-broken at larger 1/L, as seen in lattice thermal QCD with massive quarks and T=1/L. We argue that in all calculable cases, including SQCD with exact center symmetry, quarks deform instanton-monopoles by their quantum fluctuations and do not contribute to their binding. The semiclassical approximation and the molecular picture of the vacuum fail, upon decreasing the quark mass, precisely when quarks would begin mediating a long-range attractive force between monopole-instantons, calling for a dual description of the resulting strong-coupling theory.

On the decoupling of mirror fermions

An approach to the formulation of chiral gauge theories on the lattice is to start with a vector-like theory, but decouple one chirality (the "mirror" fermions) using strong Yukawa interactions with a chirally coupled "Higgs" field. While this is an attractive idea, its viability needs to be tested with nonperturbative studies. The model that we study here, the so-called "3-4-5" model, is anomaly free and the presence of massless states in the mirror sector is not required by anomaly matching arguments, in contrast to the "1-0" model that was studied previously. We have computed the polarization tensor in this theory and find a directional discontinuity that appears to be nonzero in the limit of an infinite lattice, which is equivalent to the continuum limit at fixed physical volume. We show that a similar behavior occurs for the free massless Ginsparg-Wilson fermion, where the polarization tensor is known to have a directional discontinuity in the continuum limit. We thus find support for the conclusion that in the continuum limit of the 3-4-5 model, there are massless charged modes in the mirror sector so that it does not decouple from the light sector. The value of the discontinuity we obtain allows for two interpretations: either a chiral gauge theory does not emerge and mirror-sector fermions in a chiral anomaly free representation remain massless, or a massless vectorlike mirror fermion appears. We end by discussing some questions for future study.

Universal mechanism of (semi-classical) deconfinement and theta-dependence for all simple groups

Using the twisted partition function on R^3 x S^1, we argue that the deconfinement phase transition in pure Yang-Mills theory for all simple gauge groups is continuously connected to a quantum phase transition that can be studied in a controlled way. We explicitly consider two classes of theories, gauge theories with a center symmetry, such as SU(N_c) gauge theory for arbitrary N_c, and theories without a center symmetry, such as G_2 gauge theory. The mechanism governing the phase transition is universal and valid for all simple groups. The perturbative one-loop potential as well as monopole-instantons generate attraction among the eigenvalues of the Wilson line. This is counter-acted by neutral bions --- topological excitations which generate eigenvalue repulsion for all simple groups. The transition is driven by the competition between these three effects. We study the transition in more detail for the gauge groups SU(N_c), N_c>2, and G_2. In the case of G_2, there is no change of symmetry, but the expectation value of the Wilson line exhibits a discontinuity. We also examine the effect of the theta-angle on the phase transition and critical temperature T_c(theta). The critical temperature is a multi-branched function, which has a minimum at theta=pi as a result of topological intereference.
