Magnetodynamic properties of dipole-coupled 1D magnonic crystals

Magnonic crystals are magnetic metamaterials, that provide a promising way to manipulate magnetodynamic properties by controlling the geometry of the patterned structures. Here, we study the magnetodynamic properties of 1D magnonic crystals consisting of parallel NiFe strips with different strip widths and separations. The strips couple via dipole-dipole interactions. As an alternative to experiments and/or micromagnetic simulations, we investigate the accuracy of a simple macrospin model. For the case of simple strips, a model with a single free parameter to account for an overestimation of the out-of-plane demagnetization of the magnonic lattice is described. By adjusting this parameter a good fit with experimental as well as micromagnetic results is obtained. Moreover, the Gilbert damping is found independent of the lattice constant however the inhomogeneous linewidth broadening found to increase with decreasing stripe separation.

Describing synchronization and topological excitations in arrays of magnetic spin torque oscillators through the Kuramoto model

The collective dynamics in populations of magnetic spin torque oscillators (STO) is an intensely studied topic in modern magnetism. Here, we show that arrays of STO coupled via dipolar fields can be modeled using a variant of the Kuramoto model, a well-known mathematical model in non-linear dynamics. By investigating the collective dynamics in arrays of STO we find that the synchronization in such systems is a finite size effect and show that the critical coupling-for a complete synchronized state-scales with the number of oscillators. Using realistic values of the dipolar coupling strength between STO we show that this imposes an upper limit for the maximum number of oscillators that can be synchronized. Further, we show that the lack of long range order is associated with the formation of topological defects in the phase field similar to the two-dimensional XY model of ferromagnetism. Our results shed new light on the synchronization of STO, where controlling the mutual synchronization of several oscillators is considered crucial for applications.

Thickness and temperature dependence of the magnetodynamic damping of pulsed laser deposited $\text{La}_{0.7}\text{Sr}_{0.3}\text{MnO}_3$ on (111)-oriented SrTi$\text{O}_3$

We have investigated the magnetodynamic properties of $\text{La}_{0.7}\text{Sr}_{0.3}\text{MnO}_3$ (LSMO) films of thickness 10, 15 and 30 nm grown on (111)-oriented SrTi$\text{O}_3$ (STO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments were performed in the temperature range 100--300 K, and the magnetodynamic damping parameter $α$ was extracted as a function of both film thickness and temperature. We found that the damping is lowest for the intermediate film thickness of 15 nm with $α\approx 2 \cdot 10^{-3}$, where $α$ is relatively constant as a function of temperature well below the Curie temperature of the respective films.

Eddy-current effects on ferromagnetic resonance: Spin wave excitations and microwave screening effects

We investigate how controlling induced eddy currents in thin film ferromagnet-normal metal (FM/NM) structures can be used to tailor the local microwave (MW) fields in ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments. The MW fields produced by eddy currents will in general have a relative phase shift with respect to the applied MW field which depends on the sample geometry. The induced fields can thus partially compensate the applied MW field, effectively screening the FM in selected parts of the sample. The highly localized fields produced by eddy currents enable the excitation of spin wave modes with non-zero wave vectors, in contrast to the uniform k = 0 mode normally excited in FMR experiments. We find that the orientation of the applied MW field is one of the key parameters controlling the eddy-current effects. The induced currents are maximized when the applied MW field is oriented perpendicular to the sample plane. Increasing the magnitude of the eddy currents results in a stronger induced MW field, enabling a more effective screening of the applied MW field as well as an enhanced excitation of spin wave modes. This investigation underlines that eddy currents can be used to control the magnitude and phase of the local MW fields in thin film structures.

Eddy current interactions in a Ferromagnet-Normal metal bilayer structure, and its impact on ferromagnetic resonance lineshapes

We investigate the effect of eddy currents on ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in ferromagnet-normal metal (FM/NM) bilayer structures. Eddy-current effects are usually neglected for NM layer thicknesses below the microwave (MW) skin depth (approx. 800 nm for Au at 10 GHz). However, we show that in much thinner NM layers (10-100 nm of Au or Cu) they induce a phase shift in the FMR excitation when the MW driving field has a component perpendicular to the sample plane. This results in a strong asymmetry of the measured absorption lines. In contrast to typical eddy-current effects, the asymmetry is larger for thinner NM layers and is tunable through changing the sample geometry and the NM layer thickness.

Thickness dependence of dynamic and static magnetic properties of pulsed laser deposited La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ films on SrTiO$_3$(001)

We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependence of static and magneto-dynamic magnetic properties of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. Epitaxial pulsed laser deposited La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ / SrTiO$_3$(001) thin films in the range from 3 unit cells (uc) to 40 uc (1.2 - 16 nm) have been investigated through ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR) and SQUID magnetometry at variable temperature. Magnetodynamically, three different thickness, $d$, regimes are identified: 20 uc $\lesssim d$ uc where the system is bulk like, a transition region 8 uc $\le d \lesssim 20$ uc where the FMR line width and position depend on thickness and $d=6$ uc which displays significantly altered magnetodynamic properties, while still displaying bulk magnetization. Magnetization and FMR measurements are consistent with a nonmagnetic volume corresponding to $\sim$ 4 uc. We observe a reduction of Curie temperature ($T_C$) with decreasing thickness, which is coherent with a mean field model description. The reduced ordering temperature also accounts for the thickness dependence of the magnetic anisotropy constants and resonance fields. The damping of the system is strongly thickness dependent, and is for thin films dominated by thickness dependent anisotropies, yielding both a strong 2-magnon scattering close to $T_c$ and a low temperature broadening. For the bulk like samples a large part of the broadening can be linked to spread in magnetic anisotropies attributed to crystal imperfections/domain boundaries of the bulk like film.

Point contact investigations of film and interface magnetoresistance of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ heterostructures on Nb:SrTiO$_{3}$

STM based magnetotransport measurements of epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ 32 nm thick films with and without an internal LaMnO$_3$ layer (0-8 nm thick) grown on Nb doped SrTiO$_3$ are presented. The measurements reveal two types of low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) with a magnitude of $\sim 0.1-1.5\%$. One LFMR contribution is identified as a conventional grain boundary/domain wall scattering through the symmetric I-V characteristics, high dependence on tip placements and insensitivity to introduction of LaMnO$_3$ layers. The other contribution originates from the reverse biased Nb doped SrTiO$_3$ interface and the interface layer of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. Both LFMR contributions display a field dependence indicative of a higher coercivity ($\sim$200 Oe) than the bulk film. LaMnO$_3$ layers are found to reduce the rectifying properties of the junctions, and sub micron lateral patterning by electron beam lithography enhances the diodic properties, in accordance with a proposed transport model based on the locality of the injected current.
