Variations of the sub-Riemannian distance on Sasakian manifolds with applications to coupling

On Sasakian manifolds with their naturally occurring sub-Riemannian structure, we consider parallel and mirror maps along geodesics of a taming Riemannian metric. We show that these transport maps have well-defined limits outside the sub-Riemannian cut-locus. Such maps are not related to parallel transport with respect to any connection. We use this map to obtain bounds on the second derivative of the sub-Riemannian distance. As an application, we get some preliminary result on couplings of sub-Riemannian Brownian motions.

Curvature and the equivalence problem in sub-Riemannian geometry

These notes give an introduction to the equivalence problem of sub-Riemannian manifolds. We first introduce preliminaries in terms of connections, frame bundles and sub-Riemannian geometry. Then we arrive to the main aim of these notes, which is to give the description of the canonical grading and connection existing on sub-Riemann manifolds with constant symbol. These structures are exactly what is needed in order to determine if two manifolds are isometric. We give three concrete examples, which are Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds, contact manifolds and Cartan (2,3,5)-manifolds. These notes are an edited version of a lecture series given at the \href{https://conference.math.muni.cz/srni/}{42nd Winter school: Geometry and Physics}, Snrí, Check Republic, mostly based on other earlier work. However, the work on Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds is original research, and illustrate the important special case were our model has the minimal set of isometries.

H-type foliations

With a view toward sub-Riemannian geometry, we introduce and study H-type foliations. These structures are natural generalizations of K-contact geometries which encompass as special cases K-contact manifolds, twistor spaces, 3K contact manifolds and H-type groups. Under an horizontal Ricci curvature lower bound, we prove on those structures sub-Riemannian diameter upper bounds and first eigenvalue estimates for the sub-Laplacian. Then, using a result by Moroianu-Semmelmann, we classify the H-type foliations that carry a parallel horizontal Clifford structure. Finally, we prove an horizontal Einstein property and compute the horizontal Ricci curvature of those spaces in codimension more than 2.

Most probable paths for anisotropic Brownian motions on manifolds

Brownian motion on manifolds with non-trivial diffusion coefficient can be constructed by stochastic development of Euclidean Brownian motions using the fiber bundle of linear frames. We provide a comprehensive study of paths for such processes that are most probable in the sense of Onsager-Machlup, however with path probability measured on the driving Euclidean processes. We obtain both a full characterization of the resulting family of most probable paths, reduced equation systems for the path dynamics where the effect of curvature is directly identifiable, and explicit equations in special cases, including constant curvature surfaces where the coupling between curvature and covariance can be explicitly identified in the dynamics. We show how the resulting systems can be integrated numerically and use this to provide examples of most probable paths on different geometries and new algorithms for estimation of mean and infinitesimal covariance.

Geometric rough paths on infinite dimensional spaces

Similar to ordinary differential equations, rough paths and rough differential equations can be formulated in a Banach space setting. For $α\in (1/3,1/2)$, we give criteria for when we can approximate Banach space-valued weakly geometric $α$-rough paths by signatures of curves of bounded variation, given some tuning of the Hölder parameter. We show that these criteria are satisfied for weakly geometric rough paths on Hilbert spaces. As an application, we obtain Wong-Zakai type result for function space valued martingales using the notion of (unbounded) rough drivers.

A horizontal Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula on totally geodesic foliations

Under suitable conditions, we show that the Euler characteristic of a foliated Riemannian manifold can be computed only from curvature invariants which are transverse to the leaves. Our proof uses the hypoelliptic sub-Laplacian on forms recently introduced by two of the authors.

Affine connections and curvature in sub-Riemannian geometry

We introduce a new approach for computing curvature of sub-Riemannian manifolds. Curvature is here meant as symplectic invariants of Jacobi curves of geodesics, as introduced by Zelenko and Li. We describe how they can be expressed using a compatible affine connection and induced tensors, without any restriction on our sub-Riemannian manifold or the choice of connection. In particular, we obtain a universal Bonnet-Myers theorem of Riemannian type. We also give universal formulas for the canonical horizontal frame along each geodesic and an algorithm for computing the curvature in general. Several examples are included to demonstrate the theory.

Radial processes for sub-Riemannian Brownian motions and applications

We study the radial part of sub-Riemannian Brownian motion in the context of totally geodesic foliations. Itô's formula is proved for the radial processes associated to Riemannian distances approximating the Riemannian one. We deduce very general stochastic completeness criteria for the sub-Riemannian Brownian motion. In the context of Sasakian foliations and H-type groups, one can push the analysis further, and taking advantage of the recently proved sub-Laplacian comparison theorems one can compare the radial processes for the sub-Riemannian distance to one-dimensional model diffusions. As a geometric application, we prove Cheng's type estimates for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the sub-Riemannian metric balls, a result which seems to be new even in the Heisenberg group.

Functional inequalities on path space of sub-Riemannian manifolds and applications

For sub-Riemannian manifolds with a chosen complement, we first establish the derivative formula and integration by parts formula on path space with respect to a natural gradient operator. By using these formulae, we then show that upper and lower bounds of the horizontal Ricci curvature correspond to functional inequalities on path space analogous to what has been established in Riemannian geometry by Aaron Naber, such as gradient inequalities, log-Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities.

On $\mathrm{G}_2$ and Sub-Riemannian Model Spaces of Step and Rank Three

We give the complete classification of all sub-Riemannian model spaces with both step and rank three. They will be divided into three families based on their nilpotentization. Each family will depend on a different number of parameters, making the result crucially different from the known case of step two model spaces. In particular, there are no nontrivial sub-Riemannian model spaces of step and rank three with free nilpotentization. We also realize both the compact real form $\mathfrak{g}_2^c$ and the split real form $\mathfrak{g}_2^s$ of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$ as isometry algebras of different model spaces.

Model spaces in sub-Riemannian geometry

We consider sub-Riemannian spaces admitting an isometry group that is maximal in the sense that any linear isometry between the horizontal tangent spaces is realized by a global isometry. We will show that these spaces have a canonical choice of partial connection on their horizontal bundle, which is determined by isometries and generalizes the Levi-Civita connection for the special case of Riemannian model spaces. The number of invariants needed to describe model spaces with the same tangent cone is in general greater than one, and these invariants are not necessarily related to the holonomy of the canonical connections.

A Lichnerowicz estimate for the spectral gap of the sub-Laplacian

For a second order operator on a compact manifold satisfying the strong Hörmander condition, we give a bound for the spectral gap analogous to the Lichnerowicz estimate for the Laplacian of a Riemannian manifold. We consider a wide class of such operators which includes horizontal lifts of the Laplacian on Riemannian submersions with minimal leaves.

Sub-Laplacian comparison theorems on totally geodesic Riemannian foliations

We develop a variational theory of geodesics for the canonical variation of the metric of a totally geodesic foliation. As a consequence, we obtain comparison theorems for the horizontal and vertical Laplacians. In the case of Sasakian foliations, we show that sharp horizontal and vertical comparison theorems for the sub-Riemannian distance may be obtained as a limit of horizontal and vertical comparison theorems for the Riemannian distances approximations.

Transverse Weitzenböck formulas and de Rham cohomology of totally geodesic foliations

We prove transverse Weitzenböck identities for the horizontal Laplacians of a totally geodesic foliation. As a consequence, we obtain nullity theorems for the de Rham cohomology assuming only the positivity of curvature quantities transverse to the leaves. Those curvature quantities appear in the adiabatic limit of the canonical variation of the metric.

Stochastic completeness and gradient representations for sub-Riemannian manifolds

Given a second order partial differential operator $L$ satisfying the strong Hörmander condition with corresponding heat semigroup $P_t$, we give two different stochastic representations of $dP_t f$ for a bounded smooth function $f$. We show that the first identity can be used to prove infinite lifetime of a diffusion of $\frac{1}{2} L$, while the second one is used to find an explicit pointwise bound for the horizontal gradient on a Carnot group. In both cases, the underlying idea is to consider the interplay between sub-Riemannian geometry and connections compatible with this geometry.

Submersions and curves of constant geodesic curvature

Considering Riemannian submersions, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for when sub-Riemannian normal geodesics project to curves of constant first geodesic curvature or constant first and vanishing second geodesic curvatures. We describe a canonical extension of the sub-Riemannian metric and study geometric properties of the obtained Riemannian manifold. This work contains several examples illustrating the results.

Asymptotic expansions of holonomy

Given a principal bundle with a connection, we look for an asymptotic expansion of the holonomy of a loop in terms of its length. This length is defined relative to some Riemannian or sub-Riemannian structure. We are able to give an asymptotic formula that is independent of choice of gauge.

Submersions, Hamiltonian systems and optimal solutions to the rolling manifolds problem

Given a submersion $π:Q \to M$ with an Ehresmann connection $\mathcal{H}$, we describe how to solve Hamiltonian systems on $M$ by lifting our problem to $Q$. Furthermore, we show that all solutions of these lifted Hamiltonian systems can be described using the original Hamiltonian vector field on $M$ along with a generalization of the magnetic force. This generalized force is described using the curvature of $\mathcal{H}$ along with a new form of parallel transport of covectors vanishing on $\mathcal{H}$. Using the Pontryagin maximum principle, we apply this theory to optimal control problems $M$ and $Q$ to get results on normal and abnormal extremals. We give a demonstration of our theory by considering the optimal control problem of one Riemannian manifold rolling on another without twisting or slipping along curves of minimal length.
