Hyperbolicity and Specialness of Symmetric Powers

Inspired by the computation of the Kodaira dimension of symmetric powers Xm of a complex projective variety X of dimension n $\ge$ 2 by Arapura and Archava, we study their analytic and algebraic hyperbolic properties. First we show that Xm is special if and only if X is special (except when the core of X is a curve). Then we construct dense entire curves in (suf-ficiently hig) symmetric powers of K3 surfaces and product of curves. We also give a criterion based on the positivity of jet differentials bundles that implies pseudo-hyperbolicity of symmetric powers. As an application, we obtain the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of symmetric powers of generic projective hypersur-faces of sufficiently high degree. On the algebraic side, we give a criterion implying that subvarieties of codimension $\le$ n -- 2 of symmetric powers are of general type. This applies in particular to varieties with ample cotangent bundles. Finally, based on a metric approach we study symmetric powers of ball quotients.

Orbifold hyperbolicity

We define and study jet bundles in the geometric orbifold category. We show that the usual arguments from the compact and the logarithmic settings do not all extend to this more general framework. This is illustrated by simple examples of orbifold pairs of general type that do not admit any global jet differential, even if some of these examples satisfy the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture. This contrasts with an important result of Demailly (2010) proving that compact varieties of general type always admit jet differentials. We illustrate the usefulness of the study of orbifold jets by establishing the hyperbolicity of some orbifold surfaces, that cannot be derived from the current techniques in Nevanlinna's theory. We also conjecture that Demailly's theorem should hold for orbifold pairs with smooth boundary divisors under a certain natural multiplicity condition, and provide some evidence towards it.

Curves in Hilbert modular varieties

We prove a boundedness-theorem for families of abelian varieties with real multiplication. More generally, we study curves in Hilbert modular varieties from the point of view of the Green Griffiths-Lang conjecture claiming that entire curves in complex projective varieties of general type should be contained in a proper subvariety. Using holomorphic foliations theory, we establish a Second Main Theorem following Nevanlinna theory. Finally, with a metric approach, we establish the strong Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture for Hilbert modular varieties up to finitely many possible exceptions.

Hyperbolicity of singular spaces

We study the hyperbolicity of singular quotients of bounded symmetric domains. We give effective criteria for such quotients to satisfy Green-Griffiths-Lang's conjectures in both analytic and algebraic settings. As an application, we show that Hilbert modular varieties, except for a few possible exceptions, satisfy all expected conjectures.

Hyperbolicity, automorphic forms and Siegel modular varieties

We study the hyperbolicity of compactifications of quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups. We prove that, up to an étale cover, they are Kobayashi hyperbolic modulo the boundary. Applying our techniques to Siegel modular varieties, we improve some former results of Nadel on the non-existence of certain level structures on abelian varieties over complex function fields.

The exceptional set and the Green-Griffiths locus do not always coincide

We give a very simple criterion in order to ensure that the Green-Griffiths locus of a projective manifold is the whole manifold. Next, we use it to show that the Green-Griffiths locus of any projective manifold uniformized by a bounded symmetric domain of rank greater than one is the whole manifold. In particular, this clarifies an old example given by M. Green to S. Lang.

Canonical surfaces with big cotangent bundle

Surfaces of general type with positive second Segre number are known to have big cotangent bundle. We give a new criterion ensuring that a surface of general type with canonical singularities has a minimal resolution with big cotangent bundle. This provides many examples of surfaces with negative second Segre number and big cotangent bundle.

On the hyperbolicity of surfaces of general type with small $c_1 ^2$

Surfaces of general type with positive second Segre number $s_2:=c_1^2-c_2>0$ are known by results of Bogomolov to be quasi-hyperbolic i.e. with finitely many rational and elliptic curves. These results were extended by McQuillan in his proof of the Green-Griffiths conjecture for entire curves on such surfaces. In this work, we study hyperbolic properties of minimal surfaces of general type with minimal $c_1^2$, known as Horikawa surfaces. In principle these surfaces should be the most difficult case for the above conjecture as illustrate the quintic surfaces in $\bP^3$. Using orbifold techniques, we exhibit infinitely many irreducible components of the moduli of Horikawa surfaces whose very generic member has no rational curves or even is algebraically hyperbolic. Moreover, we construct explicit examples of algebraically hyperbolic and (quasi-)hyperbolic orbifold Horikawa surfaces.

A survey on hyperbolicity of projective hypersurfaces

These are lecture notes of a course held at IMPA, Rio de Janiero, in september 2010: the purpose was to present recent results on Kobayashi hyperbolicity in complex geometry. Our ultimate goal is to describe the results obtained on questions related to the geometry of entire curves traced in generic complex projective hypersurfaces of high degree. For the convenience of the reader, this survey tries to be as self contained as possible.

Effective algebraic degeneracy

We prove that any nonconstant entire holomorphic curve from the complex line C into a projective algebraic hypersurface X = X^n in P^{n+1}(C) of arbitrary dimension n (at least 2) must be algebraically degenerate provided X is generic if its degree d = deg(X) satisfies the effective lower bound: d larger than or equal to n^{{(n+1)}^{n+5}}.

Degeneracy of holomorphic maps via orbifolds

We use orbifold structures to deduce degeneracy statements for holomorphic maps into logarithmic surfaces. We improve former results in the smooth case and generalize them to singular pairs. In particular, we give applications on nodal surfaces and complements of singular plane curves.

Generalized Demailly-Semple jet bundles and holomorphic mappings into complex manifolds

Motivated by the Green-Griffiths conjecture, we study maximal rank holomorphic maps from $\C^p$ into complex manifolds. When $p>1$ such maps should in principle be more tractable than entire curves. We extend to this setting the jet-bundles techniques introduced by Semple, Green-Griffiths and Demailly. Our main application is the non-existence of maximal rank holomorphic maps from $\C^2$ into the very general degree $d$ hypersurface in $\bP^4$, as soon as $d\geq 93.$

Logarithmic vector fields and hyperbolicity

In this article we prove that the complement of a very generic curve of degree at least equal to 14 in the complex projective plane is hyperbolic in the sense of Kobayashi. Thus, using a new method, we improve the former known bound obtained by El Goul. We also improve the case of a very generic curve with two components.

Hyperbolicity of geometric orbifolds

We study complex hyperbolicity in the setting of geometric orbifolds introduced by F. Campana. Generalizing classical methods to this context, we obtain degeneracy statements for entire curves with ramification in situations where no Second Main Theorem is known from value distribution theory.

Etude des jets de Demailly-Semple en dimension 3

Demailly-Semple jets are studied using the invariant theory of non reductive groups. The geometric characterization of the 3-jets bundle in dimension 3 is given and provides a Riemann-Roch computation.
