Probing the hadron mass spectrum in dense two-color QCD with the linear sigma model

We investigate modifications of hadron masses at finite quark chemical potential in two-flavor and two-color QCD, of which the data are available from lattice simulations, within a linear sigma model based on approximate Pauli-Gursey $SU(4)$ symmetry. The model describes not only ground-state scalar diquarks and pseudo-scalar mesons but also the excited pseudo-scalar diquarks and scalar mesons; each ground-state diquark (meson) has the corresponding excited diquark (hadron) with opposite parity as a chiral partner. Effects of chiral symmetry breaking and diquark condensates are incorporated by a mean-field treatment. We show that various mixings among the hadrons, which are triggered by the breakdown of baryon number conservation in the superfluid phase, lead to a rich hadron mass spectrum. We discuss the influence of $U(1)_A$ anomaly on the density dependence of the mass spectrum and also manifestations of the chiral partner structures as density increases in the superfluid phase. The predicted hadron masses are expected to provide future lattice simulations with useful information on such symmetry properties in dense two-color QCD.

Measurement of hadron masses in 2-color finite density QCD

We investigate hadron spectra in 2-color QCD using lattice simulation with $N_{f}=2$ at low temperature and finite density in which there appears not only the hadronic phase but also the superfluid phase. We first calculate the pion and rho meson spectrum, which is well-known from previous works. The spectral ordering of these mesons flips around the quark chemical potential $μ=m^{0}_π/2$ ($m^{0}_π$: the pion mass at $μ=0$), where the phase transition between the hadronic and superfluid phases occurs. For $μ\gtrsim m^{0}_π/2$, the effective mass for the pion linearly increases while the one for the rho meson monotonically decreases. Furthermore, we measure hadron spectra with the isospin $I=0$ and the angular momentum $J^{P}=0^{\pm}$. The effective masses for the meson, diquark, and antidiquark with the same quantum number become degenerate just below $μ= m^{0}_π/2$, and the three hadrons have the same mass in the superfluid phase. It suggests that mixing occurs between spectra associating with mesons and baryons due to the $U(1)_{B}$ symmetry breaking. This phenomenon can be explained in the linear sigma model with the approximate $SU(4)$ Pauli-Gursey symmetry.

Bump of sound velocity in dense 2-color QCD

We obtain the equation of state (EoS) and the sound velocity for 2-color QCD at low temperature and high density and find that in the superfluid phase, $c_s^2/c^2 >1/3$, where $1/3$ is the value at the relativistic limit. Several independent Monte Carlo studies on 2-color QCD have been conducted intensively in recent years. These works have shown a clear evidence of phase transition between hadronic and superfluid phases. In our paper[1], we have investigated the EoS and sound velocity in both phases. Our result is consistent with chiral perturbation theory in a low $μ$ regime of the superfluid phase including the Bose-Einstein condensed phase, and shows a peak of sound velocity in the high-density BCS phase. We also give detailed simulation results and a comment on the holography bound in this proceedings.

Velocity of Sound beyond the High-Density Relativistic Limit from Lattice Simulation of Dense Two-Color QCD

We obtain the equation of state (EoS) for two-color QCD at low temperature and high density from the lattice Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the velocity of sound exceeds the relativistic limit ($c_s^2/c^2=1/3$) after BEC-BCS crossover in the superfluid phase. Such an excess of the sound velocity is previously unknown from any lattice calculations for QCD-like theories. This finding might have a possible relevance to the EoS of neutron star matter revealed by recent measurements of neutron star masses and radii.

DMRG study of the higher-charge Schwinger model and its 't Hooft anomaly

The charge-$q$ Schwinger model is the $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED) with a charge-$q$ Dirac fermion. It has the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ $1$-form symmetry and also enjoys the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ chiral symmetry in the chiral limit, and there is a mixed 't Hooft anomaly between those symmetries. We numerically study the charge-$q$ Schwinger model in the lattice Hamiltonian formulation using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). When applying DMRG, we map the Schwinger model to a spin chain with nonlocal interaction via Jordan-Wigner transformation, and we take the open boundary condition instead of the periodic one to make the Hilbert space finite-dimensional. When computing the energy density or chiral condensate, we find that using local operators significantly reduces the boundary effect compared with the computation of corresponding extensive quantities divided by the volume. To discuss the consequence of the 't Hooft anomaly, we carefully treat the renormalization of the chiral condensates, and then we confirm that Wilson loops generate the discrete chiral transformations in the continuum limit.

Classically emulated digital quantum simulation for screening and confinement in the Schwinger model with a topological term

We perform digital quantum simulation, using a classical simulator, to study screening and confinement in a gauge theory with a topological term, focusing on ($1+1$)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (Schwinger model) with a theta term. We compute the ground state energy in the presence of probe charges to estimate the potential between them, via adiabatic state preparation. We compare our simulation results and analytical predictions for a finite volume, finding good agreements. In particular our result in the massive case shows a linear behavior for non-integer charges and a non-linear behavior for integer charges, consistently with the expected confinement (screening) behavior for non-integer (integer) charges.

Flux tube profiles in two-color QCD at low temperature and high density

We investigate the temperature and density dependence of the color flux tube structure of dense two-color QCD with $N_f = 2$ Wilson fermions by using a lattice simulation. From Refs. [1] and [2], we have already clarified the rich phase structure in the low temperature region, including the hadronic and superfluid phases. In this study we measure the quark-antiquark potential and color flux tube profiles in such a low temperature region and find that even in the high density superfluid phase, the color electric field is squeezed into a flux tube as in the low density hadronic phase.

Negative string tension of higher-charge Schwinger model via digital quantum simulation

We study some properties of generalized global symmetry for the charge-$q$ Schwinger model in the Hamiltonian formalism, which is the $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with a charge-$q$ Dirac fermion. This model has the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ $1$-form symmetry, which is a remnant of the electric $U(1)$ $1$-form symmetry in the pure Maxwell theory. It is known that if we put the theory on closed space, then the Hilbert space is decomposed into $q$ distinct sectors, called universes and some states with higher energy density do not decay to the ground state due to the selection rule of the $1$-form symmetry. Even with open boundaries, we can observe the stability of such states by seeing a negative string tension behavior, meaning that opposite charges repel with each other. We develop a method based on the adiabatic state preparation to see this feature with digital quantum simulation and confirm it using a classical simulator of quantum devices. Especially, we measure local energy density and see how it jumps between inside and outside of insertion of the probe charges. We explicitly see that the energy density inside is lower than the outside one. This is a clear signature of the negative string tension.

QCD viscosity by combining the gradient flow and sparse modeling methods

We give a new description to obtain the shear viscosity in QCD at finite temperature. Firstly, we obtain the correlation function of the renormalized energy-momentum tensor using the gradient flow method. Secondly, we estimate the spectral function from the smeared correlation functions using the sparse modeling method. The combination of these two methods looks promising to determine the shear viscosity precisely.

Relative scale setting for two-color QCD with Nf=2 Wilson fermions

We determine the scale setting function and the pseudo-critical temperature on the lattice in $N_f=2$ two-color QCD using the Iwasaki gauge and Wilson fermion actions. Although two-color QCD does not correspond to the real world, it is very useful as a good testing ground for three-color QCD. The scale setting function gives the relative lattice spacings of simulations performed at different values of the bare coupling. It is a necessary tool for taking the continuum limit. Firstly, we measure the meson spectra for various combinations of ($β,κ$) and find a line of constant physics in $β$--$κ$ plane. Next, we determine the scale setting function via $w_0$ scale in the gradient flow method. Furthermore, we estimate the pseudo-critical temperature at zero chemical potential from the chiral susceptibility. Combining these results, we can discuss the QCD phase diagram in which both axes are given by dimensionless quantities, namely, the temperature normalized by the pseudo-critical temperature on the lattice and the chemical potential normalized by the pseudoscalar meson mass. It makes it easy to compare among several lattice studies and also makes it possible to compare theoretical analyses and lattice studies in the continuum limit.

Lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ model with ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition: bions, adiabatic continuity and pseudo-entropy

We investigate the lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small) with the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetric twisted boundary condition, where a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences ($L_{s}\gg L_τ$) is taken to approximate ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. We find that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop, which is an order parameter of the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetry, remains consistent with zero ($|\langle P\rangle|\sim 0$) from small to relatively large inverse coupling $β$ (from large to small $L_τ$). As $β$ increases, the distribution of the Polyakov loop on the complex plane, which concentrates around the origin for small $β$, isotropically spreads and forms a regular $N$-sided-polygon shape (e.g. pentagon for $N=5$), leading to $|\langle P\rangle| \sim 0$. By investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, we also verify the existence of fractional instantons and bions, which cause tunneling transition between the classical $N$ vacua and stabilize the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry. Even for quite high $β$, we find that a regular-polygon shape of the Polyakov-loop distribution, even if it is broken, tends to be restored and $|\langle P\rangle|$ gets smaller as the number of samples increases. To discuss the adiabatic continuity of the vacuum structure from another viewpoint, we calculate the $β$ dependence of ``pseudo-entropy" density $\propto\langle T_{xx}-T_{ττ}\rangle$. The result is consistent with the absence of a phase transition between large and small $β$ regions.

Finite-Density Massless Two-Color QCD at Isospin Roberge-Weiss Point and 't Hooft Anomaly

We study the phase diagram of two-flavor massless two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) under the presence of quark chemical potentials and imaginary isospin chemical potentials. At the special point of the imaginary isospin chemical potential, called the isospin Roberge--Weiss (RW) point, two-flavor QC$_2$D enjoys the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ center symmetry that acts on both quark flavors and the Polyakov loop. We find a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ 't Hooft anomaly of this system, which involves the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ center symmetry, the baryon-number symmetry, and the isospin chiral symmetry. Anomaly matching, therefore, constrains the possible phase diagram at any temperatures and quark chemical potentials at the isospin RW point, and we compare it with previous results obtained by chiral effective field theory and lattice simulations. We also point out an interesting similarity of two-flavor massless QC$_2$D with $(2+1)$d quantum anti-ferromagnetic systems.

Sparse modeling approach to obtaining the shear viscosity from smeared correlation functions

We propose the sparse modeling method to estimate the spectral function from the smeared correlation functions. We give a description of how to obtain the shear viscosity from the correlation function of the renormalized energy-momentum tensor (EMT) measured by the gradient flow method ($C(t,τ)$) for the quenched QCD at finite temperature. The measurement of the renormalized EMT in the gradient flow method reduces a statistical uncertainty thanks to its property of the smearing. However, the smearing breaks the sum rule of the spectral function and the over-smeared data in the correlation function may have to be eliminated from the analyzing process of physical observables. In this work, we demonstrate that the sparse modeling analysis in the intermediate-representation basis (IR basis), which connects between the Matsubara frequency data and real frequency data. It works well even using very limited data of $C(t,τ)$ only in the fiducial window of the gradient flow. We utilize the ADMM algorithm which is useful to solve the LASSO problem under some constraints. We show that the obtained spectral function reproduces the input smeared correlation function at finite flow-time. Several systematic and statistical errors and the flow-time dependence are also discussed.

Two-colour QCD phases and the topology at low temperature and high density

We delineate equilibrium phase structure and topological charge distribution of dense two-colour QCD at low temperature by using a lattice simulation with two-flavour Wilson fermions that has a chemical potential $μ$ and a diquark source $j$ incorporated. We systematically measure the diquark condensate, the Polyakov loop, the quark number density and the chiral condensate with improved accuracy and $j\to0$ extrapolation over earlier publications; the known qualitative features of the low temperature phase diagram, which is composed of the hadronic, Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) and BCS phases, are reproduced. In addition, we newly find that around the boundary between the hadronic and BEC phases, nonzero quark number density occurs even in the hadronic phase in contrast to the prediction of the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), while the diquark condensate approaches zero in a manner that is consistent with the ChPT prediction. At the highest $μ$, which is of order the inverse of the lattice spacing, all the above observables change drastically, which implies a lattice artifact. Finally, at temperature of order $0.45T_c$, where $T_c$ is the chiral transition temperature at zero chemical potential, the topological susceptibility is calculated from a gradient-flow method and found to be almost constant for all the values of $μ$ ranging from the hadronic to BCS phase. This is a contrast to the case of $0.89T_c$ in which the topological susceptibility becomes small as the hadronic phase changes into the quark-gluon plasma phase.

Lattice study on the twisted ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ models on ${\mathbb R}\times S^{1}$

We report the results of the lattice simulation of the ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small). We take a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences to approximate the model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. For periodic boundary condition imposed in the $S_τ^{1}$ direction, we show that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop undergoes a deconfinement crossover as the compactified circumference is decreased, where the peak of the associated susceptibility gets sharper for larger $N$. For ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition, we find that, even at relatively high $β$ (small circumference), the regular $N$-sided polygon-shaped distributions of Polyakov loop leads to small expectation values of Polyakov loop, which implies unbroken ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry if sufficient statistics and large volumes are adopted. We also argue the existence of fractional instantons and bions by investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, which causes transition between ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ vacua.

Resurgence and fractional instanton of the SU($3$) gauge theory in weak coupling regime

According to recent studies on resurgence scenario of quantum systems, some topological objects with fractional charges play an important role to see the resurgence structure. In this talk, we report a numerical evidence of the fractional-instantons of the SU($3$) gauge theory. The fractional-instanton appears in a weak coupling regime, if the theory is regularized by an infrared (IR) cutoff via the $1$-form twisted boundary conditions. The Polyakov loop is also measured to investigate the center symmetry and confinement. The fractional-instanton corresponds to a solution linking two of degenerate $\mathbb{Z}_3$-broken vacua in the deconfinement phase. This talk is based on the paper[1].

Confinement-Deconfinement Crossover in the Lattice $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ Model

The $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model at finite temperature is studied using lattice Monte Carlo simulations on $S_{s}^{1} \times S_τ^{1}$ with radii $L_{s}$ and $L_τ$, respectively, where the ratio of the circumferences is taken to be sufficiently large ($L_{s}/L_τ \gg 1$) to simulate the model on $\mathbb{R} \times S^1$. We show that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop undergoes a deconfinement crossover as $L_τ$ is decreased, where the peak of the associated susceptibility gets sharper for larger $N$. We find that the global PSU($N$)=SU($N$)$/{\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry remains unbroken at "quantum" and "classical" levels for the small and large $L_τ$, respectively: in the small $L_τ$ region for finite $N$, the order parameter fluctuates extensively with its expectation value consistent with zero after taking an ensemble average, while in the large $L_τ$ region the order parameter remains small with little fluctuations. We also calculate the thermal entropy and find that the degrees of freedom in the small $L_τ$ regime are consistent with $N-1$ free complex scalar fields, thereby indicating a good agreement with the prediction from the large-$N$ study for small $L_τ$.

Fractional instanton of the SU($3$) gauge theory in weak coupling regime

Motivated by recent studies on the resurgence structure of quantum field theories, we numerically study the nonperturbative phenomena of the SU($3$) gauge theory in a weak coupling regime. We find that topological objects with a fractional charge emerge if the theory is regularized by an infrared (IR) cutoff via the twisted boundary conditions. Some configurations with nonzero instanton number are generated as a semi-classical configuration in the Monte Carlo simulation even in the weak coupling regime. Furthermore, some of them consist of multiple fractional-instantons. We also measure the Polyakov loop to investigate the center symmetry and confinement. The fractional-instanton corresponds to a solution linking two of degenerate $\mathbb{Z}_3$-broken vacua in the deconfinement phase.
