Properties of the twisted Polyakov loop coupling and the infrared fixed point in the SU(3) gauge theories

We report the nonperturbative behavior of the twisted Polyakov loop (TPL) coupling constant for the SU(3) gauge theories defined by the ratio of Polyakov loop correlators in finite volume with twisted boundary condition. We reveal the vacuum structures and the phase structure for the lattice gauge theory with the twisted boundary condition. Carrying out the numerical simulations, we determine the nonperturbative running coupling constant in this renormalization scheme for the quenched QCD and Nf=12 SU(3) gauge theories. At first, we study the quenched QCD theory using the plaquette gauge action. The TPL coupling constant has a fake fixed point in the confinement phase. We discuss this fake fixed point of the TPL scheme and obtain the nonperturbative running coupling constant in the deconfinement phase, where the magnitude of the Polyakov loop shows the nonzero values. We also investigate the system coupled to fundamental fermions. Since we use the naive staggered fermion with the twisted boundary condition in our simulation, only multiples of 12 are allowed for the number of flavors. According to the perturbative two loop analysis, the Nf=12 SU(3) gauge theory might have a conformal fixed point in the infrared region. However, the recent lattice studies show controversial results for the existence of the fixed point. We point out possible problems in previous works, and present our careful study. Finally, we find the infrared fixed point (IRFP) and discuss the robustness of the nontrivial IRFP of many flavor system under the change of the analysis method. A part of preliminary results was reported in the proceedings [1, 2] and the letter paper [3]. In this paper we include a review of these results and give a final conclusion for the existence of IRFP of SU(3) Nf = 12 massless theory using the updated data.

The Infrared behavior of SU(3) Nf=12 gauge theory -about the existence of conformal fixed point-

Incorporated with twisted boundary condition, Polyakov loop correlators can give a definition of the renormalized coupling. We employ this scheme for the step scaling method (with step size s = 2) in the search of conformal fixed point of SU(3) gauge theory with 12 massless flavors. Staggered fermion and plaquette gauge action are used in the lattice simulation with six different lattice sizes, L/a = 20, 16, 12, 10, 8 and 6. For the largest lattice size, L/a = 20, we used a large number of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and accumulated 3,000,000 trajectories in total. We found that the step scaling function sigma (u) is consistent with u in the low-energy region. This means the existence of conformal fixed point. Some details of our analysis and simulations will also be presented.

Search for the IR fixed point in the Twisted Polyakov Loop scheme (II)

We measure the renormalized coupling in the Twisted Polyakov loop scheme for SU(3) gauge theory coupled with $N_f=12$ fundamental fermions. To find the infrared fixed point of this theory, we focus on the step scaling function for the renormalized coupling. We take the continuum limit using the linear function of $(a/L)^2$ and a constant fit function. We find that there is a sizeable systematic error due to the choice of the continuum extrapolation function in the low energy region. We will give some directions to reduce the systematic errors.

Study of the scaling properties in SU(2) gauge theory with eight flavors

We present our preliminary study of the SU(2) gauge theory with 8 flavors of fermions in fundamental representation. This theory could be a candidate of the gauge theory with conformal fixed point. By using Wilson/Polyakov loop in a finite volume with twisted boundary conditions, we study the renormalization group flow of the gauge coupling constant. Our calculation gives consistent result with the perturbative prediction of the running coupling in the weak coupling region. We investigate a possible signal for conformal behavior in the strong coupling region.

A new scheme for the running coupling constant in gauge theories using Wilson loops

We propose a new renormalization scheme of the running coupling constant in general gauge theories using the Wilson loops. The renormalized coupling constant is obtained from the Creutz ratio in lattice simulations and the corresponding perturbative coefficient at the leading order. The latter can be calculated by adopting the zeta-function resummation techniques. We perform a benchmark test of our scheme in quenched QCD with the plaquette gauge action. The running of the coupling constant is determined by applying the step-scaling procedure. Using several methods to improve the statistical accuracy, we show that the running coupling constant can be determined in a wide range of energy scales with relatively small number of gauge configurations.

Search for the IR fixed point in the twisted Polyakov loop scheme

We present a non-perturbative study of the running coupling constant in the Twisted Polyakov Loop (TPL) scheme. We investigate how the systematic and statistical errors can be controlled {\it via} a feasibility study in SU(3) pure Yang-Mills theory. We show that our method reproduces the perturbative determination of the running coupling in the UV. In addition, our numerical result agrees with the theoretical prediction of this coupling constant in the IR. We also present our preliminary results for $N_f=12$ QCD, where an IR fixed point may be present.

A New Method of Calculating the Running Coupling Constant

We propose a new method to compute the running coupling constant of gauge theories on the lattice. We first give the definition of the running coupling in the new scheme using the Wilson loops in a finite volume, and explain how the running of the coupling constant is extracted from the measurement of the volume dependence. The perturbative calculation of the renormalization constant to define the scheme is also given at the leading order. As a benchmark test of the new scheme we apply the method the case of the quenched QCD. We show the preliminary result from our numerical simulations which are carried out with plaquette gauge action for various lattice sizes and bare lattice couplings. With techniques to improve the statistical accuracy, we show that we can determine the non-perturbative running of the coupling constant in a wide range of the energy scale with relatively small number of gauge configurations in our scheme. We compare our lattice data of the running coupling constant with perturbative renormalization group evolution at one- and two-loop order, and confirm the consistency between them at high energy.

Supersymmetric three dimensional conformal sigma models

We construct supersymmetric conformal sigma models in three dimensions. Nonlinear sigma models in three dimensions are nonrenormalizable in perturbation theory. We use the Wilsonian renormalization group equation method, which is one of the nonperturbative methods, to find the fixed points. Existence of fixed points is extremely important in this approach to show the renormalizability. Conformal sigma models are defined as the fixed point theories of the Wilsonian renormalization group equation. The Wilsonian renormalization group equation with anomalous dimension coincides with the modified Ricci flow equation. The conformal sigma models are characterized by one parameter which corresponds to the anomalous dimension of the scalar fields. Any Einstein-Kähler manifold corresponds to a conformal field theory when the anomalous dimension is $γ=-1/2$. Furthermore, we investigate the properties of target spaces in detail for two dimensional case, and find the target space of the fixed point theory becomes compact or noncompact depending on the value of the anomalous dimension. This is a proceeding to the conference based on the talk given by E.I.

The BV Master Equation for the Wilson Action in general Yang-Mills Gauge Theory

The Wilson effective action for general Yang-Mills gauge theory is shown to satisfy the usual form of Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) master equation, despite that a momentum cutoff apparently breaks the gauge invariance. In the case of Abelian gauge theory, in particular, it actually deduces the Ward-Takahashi identity for Wilson action recently derived by Sonoda.

Wilsonian renormalization group approach to the lower dimensional nonlinear sigma models

In this paper, we study three dimensional NL$σ$Ms within two kind of nonperturbative methods; WRG and large-N expansion. First, we investigate the renormalizability of some NL$σ$Ms using WRG equation. We find that some models have a nontrivial UV fixed point and are renormalizable within nonperturbative method. Second, we study the phase structure of $CP^{N-1}$ and $Q^{N-2}$ models using large-N expansion. These two models have two and three phases respectively. At last, we construct the conformal field theories at the fixed point of the nonperturbative WRG $β$ function. This is the review of recently works and is based on the talk of the conference by EI.

Nonabelian Discrete Family Symmetry to Soften the SUSY Flavor Problem and to Suppress Proton Decay

Family symmetry could explain large mixing of the atmospheric neutrinos. The same symmetry could explain why the flavor changing current processes in supersymmetric standard models can be so suppressed. It also may be able to explain why the proton is so stable. We investigate these questions in a supersymmetric, renormalizable extension of the standard model, which possess a family symmetry based on a binary dihedral group Q_6. We find that the amplitude for μ\to e+γenjoys a suppression factor proportional to |(V_{MNS})_{e3}| ~ m_e/(\sqrt{2}m_μ) ~ 3.4\times 10^{-3}, and that B(p \to K^0 μ^+)/B(p \to K^0 e^+) ~ |(V_{MNS})_{e3}|^2 ~ 10^{-5}, where V_{MNS} is the neutrino mixing matrix.

Large-N Analysis of Three Dimensional Nonlinear Sigma Models

Non-perturbative renormalization group approach suggests that a large class of nonlinear sigma models are renormalizable in three dimensional space-time, while they are non-renormalizable in perturbation theory. ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models whose target spaces are Einstein-Kähler manifolds with positive scalar curvature belongs to this class. hermitian symmetric spaces, being homogeneous, are specially simple examples of these manifolds. To find an independent evidence of the nonperturbative renormalizability of these models, the large N method, another nonperturbative method, is applied to 3-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on the target spaces $CP^{N-1}=SU(N)/[SU(N-1)\times U(1)]$ and $Q^{N-2}=SO(N)/[SO(N-2)\times SO(2)]$, two typical examples of hermitian symmetric spaces. We find that $β$ functions in these models agree with the results of the nonperturbative renormalization group approach in the next-to-leading order of 1/N expansion, and have non-trivial UV fixed points. The $β$ function of the $Q^{N-2}$ model receives a nonzero correction in the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion. We also investigate the phase structures of our models. The $CP^{N-1}$ model has two phases; SU(N) symmetric and asymmetric phase. The $Q^{N-2}$ model has three phases; Chern-Simons, Higgs and SO(N) broken phases. In the Chern-Simons and Higgs phase, SO(N) symmetry remains unbroken and all dynamical fields becomes massive. An auxiliary gauge field also acquires mass, through an induced Chern-Simons term in the Chern-Simons phase, and through the vacuum expectation value of a di-quark bound state in the Higgs phase.

New Conformal Field Theories with Anomalous Dimensions

We find a class of fixed point theory for 2- and 3-dimensional non-linear sigma models using Wilsonian renormalization group (WRG) approach. In 2-dimensional case, the fixed point theory is equivalent to the Witten's semi-infinite cigar model. In 3-dimensional case, the theory has one parameter which describes a marginal deformation from the infrared to ultraviolet fixed points of the $CP^N$ model in the theory spaces.

A New Class of Conformal Field Theories with Anomalous Dimensions

The Wilsonian renormalization group (WRG) equation is used to derive a new class of scale invariant field theories with nonvanishing anomalous dimensions in 2-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models. When the coordinates of the target manifolds have nontrivial anomalous dimensions, vanishing of the $β$ function suggest the existence of novel conformal field theories whose target space is not Ricci flat. We construct such conformal field theories with ${\bf U}(N)$ symmetry. The theory has one free parameter a corresponding to the anomalous dimension of the scalar fields. The new conformal field theories are well behaved for positive a and have the central charge 3N, while they have curvature singularities at the boundary for a<0. When the target space is of complex 1-dimension, we obtain the explicit form of the Lagrangian, which reduces to two different kinds of free field theories in weak and in strong coupling limit. As a consistency test, the anomalous dimensions are reproduced in these two limits. The target space in this case looks like a semi-infinite cigar with one-dimension compactified to a circle.

Normal Coordinates in Kahler Manifolds and the Background Field Method

Riemann normal coordinates (RNC) are unsuitable for \kahler manifolds since they are not holomorphic. Instead, \kahler normal coordinates (KNC) can be defined as holomorphic coordinates. We prove that KNC transform as a holomorphic tangent vector under holomorphic coordinate transformations, and therefore that they are natural extensions of RNC to the case of \kahler manifolds. The KNC expansion provides a manifestly covariant background field method preserving the complex structure in supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models.

Wilsonian Renormalization Group Approach to ${\cal N}=2$ Supersymmetric Sigma Models

We derive the Wilsonian renormalization group equation in two dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models. This equation shows that the sigma models on compact Einstein Kähler manifolds are aymptotically free. This result is gerenal and does not depend on the specific forms of the Kähler potentials. We also examine the renormalization group flow in a new model which connects two manifolds with different global symmetries.
