Central limit theorems for open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices

We consider the open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices and investigate the central limit theorems for the walks. On the integer lattices the open quantum random walks satisfy the central limit theorems as was shown by Attal, {\it et al}. In this paper we prove the central limit theorems for the open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices. We then provide with some examples for the Hexagonal lattices. We also develop the Fourier analysis on the crystal lattices. This leads to construct the so called dual processes for the open quantum random walks. It amounts to get Fourier transform of the probability densities, and it is very useful when we compute the characteristic functions of the walks. In this paper we construct the dual processes for the open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices providing with some examples.

Conditional limit measure of one-dimensional quantum walk with absorbing sink

We consider a two-state quantum walk on a line where after the first step an absorbing sink is placed at the origin. The probability of finding the walker at position $j$, conditioned on that it has not returned to the origin, is investigated in the asymptotic limit. We prove a limit theorem for the conditional probability distribution and show that it is given by the Konno's density function modified by a pre-factor ensuring that the distribution vanishes at the origin. In addition, we discuss the relation to the problem of recurrence of a quantum walk and determine the Polya number. Our approach is based on path counting and stationary phase approximation.

Staggered Quantum Walk on Hexagonal Lattices

A discrete-time staggered quantum walk was recently introduced as a generalization that allows to unify other versions, such as the coined and Szegedy's walk. However, it also produces new forms of quantum walks not covered by previous versions. To explore their properties, we study here the staggered walk on a hexagonal lattice. Such a walk is defined using a set of overlapping tessellations that cover the graph edges, and each tessellation is a partition of the node set into cliques. The hexagonal lattice requires at least three tessellations. Each tessellation is associated with a local unitary operator and the product of the local operators defines the evolution operator of the staggered walk on the graph. After defining the evolution operator on the hexagonal lattice, we analyze the quantum walk dynamics with the focus on the position standard deviation and localization. We also obtain analytic results for the time complexity of spatial search algorithms with one marked node using cyclic boundary conditions.

A spectral analysis of discrete-time quantum walks related to the birth and death chains

In this paper, we consider a spectral analysis of discrete time quantum walks on the path. For isospectral coin cases, we show that the time averaged distribution and stationary distributions of the quantum walks are described by the pair of eigenvalues of the coins as well as the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding random walks which are usually referred as the birth and death chains. As an example of the results, we derive the time averaged distribution of so-called Szegedy's walk which is related to the Ehrenfest model. It is represented by Krawtchouk polynomials which is the eigenvectors of the model and includes the arcsine law.

Scattering and inverse scattering for nonlinear quantum walks

We study large time behavior of quantum walks (QWs) with self-dependent (nonlinear) coin. In particular, we show scattering and derive the reproducing formula for inverse scattering in the weak nonlinear regime. The proof is based on space-time estimate of (linear) QWs such as dispersive estimates and Strichartz estimate. Such argument is standard in the study of nonlinear Schrödinger equations and discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations but it seems to be the first time to be applied to QW.

Weak limit theorem for a nonlinear quantum walk

This paper continues the study of large time behavior of a nonlinear quantum walk begun in arXiv:1801.03214. In this paper, we provide a weak limit theorem for the distribution of the nonlinear quantum walk. The proof is based on the scattering theory of the nonlinear quantum walk and the limit distribution is obtained in terms of its asymptotic state.

Quantum Search on Simplicial Complexes

In this paper, we propose an extension of quantum searches on graphs driven by quantum walks to simplicial complexes. To this end, we newly define a quantum walk on simplicial complex which is an alternative of preceding studies by authors. We show that the quantum search on the specific simplicial complex corresponding to the triangulation of $n$-dimensional unit square driven by this new simplicial quantum walk works well, namely, a marked simplex can be found with probability $1+o(1)$ with in a time $O(\sqrt{N})$, where $N$ is the number of simplices with the dimension of marked simplex.

Resonant-tunneling in discrete-time quantum walk

We show that discrete-time quantum walks on the line, $\mathbb{Z}$, behave as "the quantum tunneling". In particular, quantum walkers can tunnel through a double-well with the transmission probability $1$ under a mild condition. This is a property of quantum walks which cannot be seen on classical random walks, and is different from both linear spreadings and localizations.

On nonlinear scattering for quantum walks

We study large time behavior of quantum walks (QW) with self-dependent coin. In particular, we show scattering and derive the reproducing formula for inverse scattering in the weak nonlinear regime. The proof is based on space-time estimate of (linear) QW such as Strichartz estimate. Such argument is standard in the study of nonlinear Schrödinger equations but it seems to be the first time to be applied to QW. We also numerically study the dynamics of QW and observe soliton like solutions.

Sensitivity of quantum walks to boundary of two-dimensional lattices: approaches from the CGMV method and topological phases

In this paper, we treat quantum walks in a two-dimensional lattice with cutting edges along a straight boundary introduced by Asboth and Edge (2015 Phys.Rev. A 91 022324) in order to study one-dimensional edge states originating from topological phases of matter and to obtain collateral evidence of how a quantum walker reacts to the boundary. Firstly, we connect this model to the CMV matrix, which provides a 5-term recursion relation of the Laurent polynomial associated with spectral measure on the unit circle. Secondly,we explicitly derive the spectra of bulk and edge states of the quantum walk with the boundary using spectral analysis of the CMV matrix. Thirdly, while topological numbers of the model studied so far are well-defined only when gaps in the bulk spectrum exist, we find a new topological number defined only when there are no gaps in the bulk spectrum. We confirm that the existence of the spectrum for edge states derived from the CMV matrix is consistent with the prediction from a bulk-edge correspondence using topological numbers calculated in the cases where gaps in the bulk spectrum do or do not exist. Finally, we show how the edge states contribute to the asymptotic behavior of the quantum walk through limit theorems of the finding probability. Conversely, we also propose a differential equation using this limit distribution whose solution is the underlying edge state.

How does Grover walk recognize the shape of crystal lattice?

We consider the support of the limit distribution of the Grover walk on crystal lattices with the linear scaling. The orbit of the Grover walk is denoted by the parametric plot of the pseudo-velocity of the Grover walk in the wave space. The region of the orbit is the support of the limit distribution. In this paper, we compute the regions of the orbits for the triangular, hexagonal and kagome lattices. We show every outer frame of the support is described by an ellipse. The shape of the ellipse depends only on the realization of the fundamental lattice of the crystal lattice in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Partition-based discrete-time quantum walks

We introduce a family of discrete-time quantum walks, called two-partition model, based on two equivalence-class partitions of the computational basis, which establish the notion of local dynamics. This family encompasses most versions of unitary discrete-time quantum walks driven by two local operators studied in literature, such as the coined model, Szegedy's model, and the 2-tessellable staggered model. We also analyze the connection of those models with the two-step coined model, which is driven by the square of the evolution operator of the standard discrete-time coined walk. We prove formally that the two-step coined model, an extension of Szegedy model for multigraphs, and the two-tessellable staggered model are unitarily equivalent. Then, selecting one specific model among those families is a matter of taste not generality.

Coined Quantum Walks as Quantum Markov Chains

We analyze the equivalence between discrete-time coined quantum walks and Szegedy's quantum walks. We characterize a class of flip-flop coined models with generalized Grover coin on a graph $Γ$ that can be directly converted into Szegedy's model on the subdivision graph of $Γ$ and we describe a method to convert one model into the other. This method improves previous results in literature that need to use the staggered model and the concept of line graph, which are avoided here.

Quantum walks induced by Dirichlet random walks on infinite trees

We consider the Grover walk on infinite trees from the view point of spectral analysis. From the previous works, infinite regular trees provide localization. In this paper, we give the complete characterization of the eigenspace of this Grover walk, which involves localization of its behavior and recovers the previous works. Our result suggests that the Grover walk on infinite trees may be regarded as a limit of the quantum walk induced by the isotropic random walk with the Dirichlet boundary condition at the $n$-th depth rather than one with the Neumann boundary condition.

The spectra of the unitary marix of a 2-tessellable staggered quantum walk on a graph

Recently, the staggered quantum walk (SQW) on a graph is discussed as a generalization of coined quantum walks on graphs and Szegedy walks. We present a formula for the time evolution matrix of a 2-tessellable SQW on a graph, and so directly give its spectra. Furthermore, we present a formula for the Szegedy matrix of a bipartite graph by the same method, and so give its spectra. As an application, we present a formula for the characteristic polynomial of the modified Szegedy matrix in the quantum search problem on a graph, and give its spectra.

Spectral mapping theorem of an abstract quantum walk

Given two Hilbert spaces, $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{K}$, we introduce an abstract unitary operator $U$ on $\mathcal{H}$ and its discriminant $T$ on $\mathcal{K}$ induced by a coisometry from $\mathcal{H}$ to $\mathcal{K}$ and a unitary involution on $\mathcal{H}$. In a particular case, these operators $U$ and $T$ become the evolution operator of the Szegedy walk on a graph, possibly infinite, and the transition probability operator thereon. We show the spectral mapping theorem between $U$ and $T$ via the Joukowsky transform. Using this result, we have completely detemined the spectrum of the Grover walk on the Sierpiński lattice, which is pure point and has a Cantor-like structure.

Generator of an abstract quantum walk

We consider an abstract quantum walk defined by a unitary evolution operator $U$, which acts on a Hilbert space decomposed into a direct sum of Hilbert spaces $\{\mathcal{H}_v \}_{v \in V}$. We show that such $U$ naturally defines a directed graph $G_U$ and the probability of finding a quantum walker on $G_U$. The asymptotic property of an abstract quantum walker is governed by the generator $H$ of $U$ such that $U^n = e^{inH}$. We derive the generator of an evolution of the form $U = S(2d_A^* d_A -1)$, a generalization of the Szegedy evolution operator. Here $d_A$ is a boundary operator and $S$ a shift operator.

A note on the spectral mapping theorem of quantum walk models

We discuss the description of eigenspace of a quantum walk model $U$ with an associating linear operator $T$ in abstract settings of quantum walk including the Szegedy walk on graphs. In particular, we provide the spectral mapping theorem of $U$ without the spectral decomposition of $T$. Arguments in this direction reveal the eigenspaces of $U$ characterized by the generalized kernels of linear operators given by $T$.
