Frame constructions associated with operator orbits

This paper studies frames in Hilbert spaces generated by the orbits of (in)-finitely many vectors under a single operator, presenting new results on multiplication operators and operators composed of Jordan blocks, which generalizes existing results of Cabrelli, Molter, Paternostro and Philipp by means of techniques which deal with weighted interpolation, weighted composition operators, and Beurling--Lax theory related to shifts of infinity multiplicity. Likewise, we discuss Carleson frames and give counterexamples to a recent conjecture of Aldroubi, Cabrelli, Krishtal and Molter.

Hyperinvariant subspaces of hyponormal operators: A constructive decomposition approach

It is shown that any hyponormal operator on an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space that admits a decomposition \( T = R + V \), where \( R \) is tridiagonal and \( V \) is trace-class, has nontrivial closed hyperinvariant subspaces provided $T$ is not a multiple of the identity. We further discuss implications of this result for the invariant subspace problem of hyponormal operators answering, in particular, negatively to a question raised by Kim and Lee \cite{kimlee} regarding an explicit approach to such a problem. Finally, we characterize the existence of reducing subspaces for hyponormal operators addressing an approach by Aronszajn and Smith.

Spectral cuts and unconventional functional calculi

In this work, we prove that linear bounded operators $T$ on a Banach space $X$ allowing spectral cuts along rectifiable Jordan curves meeting their spectrum are related to classes of operators admitting an unconventional functional calculus. We identify several such classes and address the consequences regarding the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces, extending previous results of Chalendar. Furthermore, we establish that every operator belonging to a broad subclass of compact perturbations of diagonalizable normal operators on separable Hilbert spaces, namely, trace-class perturbations, possesses an unconventional functional calculus and is super-decomposable, thereby extending earlier results obtained by the authors.

Invariant subspaces for finite index shifts in Hardy spaces

Let $\mathbb H$ be the finite direct sums of $H^2(\mathbb D)$. In this paper, we give a characterization of the closed subspaces of $\mathbb H$ which are invariant under the shift, thus obtaining a concrete Beurling-type theorem for the finite index shift. This characterization presents any such a subspace as the finite intersection, up to an inner function, of pre-images of a closed shift-invariant subspace of $H^2(\mathbb D)$ under ``determinantal operators'' from $\mathbb H$ to $H^2(\mathbb D)$, that is, continuous linear operators which intertwine the shifts and appear as determinants of matrices with entries given by bounded holomorphic functions. With simple algebraic manipulations we provide a direct proof that every invariant closed subspace of codimension at least two sits into a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. As a consequence every contraction with finite defect has a nontrivial closed invariant subspace.

Finite dimensional approximations for Hilbert space operators and applications in Quantum Mechanics

In this work, we develop a unified framework for quasidiagonal and Følner-type approximations of linear operators on Hilbert spaces. These approximations (originally formulated for bounded operators and operator algebras) involve sequences of non-zero finite rank orthogonal projections that asymptotically commute with the operator -- either in norm (quasidiagonal) or in mean (Følner). Such structures guarantee spectral approximation results in terms of their finite sections. We extend this theory to unbounded, densely defined closable operators, establishing a generalization of Halmos' classical result: every closable quasidiagonal operator is a compact perturbation of a closable block-diagonal operator on the same domain. Likewise, we introduce sparse Følner sequences and establish an interplay between quasidiagonal approximations and the existence of sparse Følner sequences. The theoretical developments are illustrated with explicit examples using different types of weighted shifts and applied to quantum mechanical models, including a detailed treatment of the Weyl algebra and its Schrödinger representation.

Local spectral theory for subordinated operators: the Cesàro operator and beyond

We study local spectral properties for subordinated operators arising from $C_0$-semigroups. Specifically, if $\mathcal{T}=(T_t)_{t\geq 0}$ is a $C_0$-semigroup acting boundedly on a complex Banach space and $$\mathcal{H}_ν= \int_{0}^{\infty} T_t\; dν(t)$$ is the subordinated operator associated to $\mathcal{T}$, where $ν$ is a sufficiently regular complex Borel measure supported on $[0,\infty)$, it is shown that $\mathcal{H}_ν$ does not enjoy the Single Valued Extension Property (SVEP) and has dense glocal spectral subspaces in terms of the spectrum of the generator of $\mathcal{T}$. Likewise, the adjoint $\mathcal{H}_ν^{\ast}$ has trivial spectral subspaces and enjoys the Dunford property. As an application, for the classical Cesàro operator $\mathcal{C}$ acting on the Hardy spaces $H^p$ ($1<p<\infty$), it follows that the local spectrum of $\mathcal{C}$ at any non-zero $H^p$-function or the spectrum of the restriction of $\mathcal{C}$ to any of its non-trivial closed invariant subspaces coincides with the spectrum of $\mathcal{C}$. Finally, we characterize the local spectral properties of subordinated operators arising from hyperbolic semigroups of composition operators acting on $H^p$ ($1<p<\infty$), which will depend only on the geometry of the associated Koenigs domain.

Complete frequencies for Koenigs domains

We provide a complete characterization of those non-elliptic semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc for which the linear span of eigenvectors of the generator of the corresponding semigroup of composition operators is weak-star dense in $H^\infty$. We also give some necessary and some sufficient conditions for completeness in $H^p$. This problem is equivalent to the completeness of the corresponding exponential functions in $H^\infty$ (in the weak-star sense) or in $H^p$ of the Koenigs domain of the semigroup. As a tool needed for the results, we introduce and study discontinuities of semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc.

Rhaly operators: more on generalized Cesàro operators

Rhaly operators, as generalizations of the Cesàro operator, are studied from the standpoint of view of spectral theory and invariant subspaces, extending previous results by Rhaly and Leibowitz to a framework where generalized Cesàro operators arise naturally.

Dunford property for composition operators on $H^p$-spaces

The Dunford property $(C)$ for composition operators on $H^p$-spaces ($1<p<\infty$), as well as for their adjoints, is completely characterized within the class of those induced by linear fractional transformations of the unit disc. As a consequence, it is shown that the Dunford property is stable in such a class addressing a particular instance of a question posed by Laursen and Neumann.

Finite rank perturbations of normal operators: hyperinvariant subspaces and a problem of Pearcy

Finite rank perturbations of diagonalizable normal operators acting boundedly on infinite dimensional, separable, complex Hilbert spaces are considered from the standpoint of view of the existence of invariant subspaces. In particular, if $T=D_Λ+u\otimes v$ is a rank-one perturbation of a diagonalizable normal operator $D_Λ$ with respect to a basis $\mathcal{E}=\{e_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ and the vectors $u$ and $v$ have Fourier coefficients $\{α_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ and $\{β_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ with respect to $\mathcal{E}$ respectively, it is shown that $T$ has non trivial closed invariant subspaces provided that either $u$ or $v$ have a Fourier coefficient which is zero or $u$ and $v$ have non zero Fourier coefficients and $$ \sum_{n\geq 1} |α_n|^2 \log \frac{1}{|α_n|} + |β_n|^2 \log \frac{1}{|β_n|} < \infty.$$ As a consequence, if $(p,q)\in (0,2]\times (0,2]$ are such $\sum_{n\geq 1} (|α_n|^p + |β_n|^q )< \infty,$ it is shown the existence of non trivial closed invariant subspaces of $T$ whenever $$(p,q)\in (0,2]\times (0,2]\setminus \{(2, r), (r, 2):\; r\in(1,2]\}.$$ Moreover, such operators $T$ have non trivial closed hyperinvariant subspaces whenever they are not a scalar multiple of the identity. Likewise, analogous results hold for finite rank perturbations of $D_Λ$. This improves considerably previous theorems of Foiaş, Jung, Ko and Pearcy, Fang and Xia and the authors on an open question explicitly posed by Pearcy in the seventies.

Insights on the Cesàro operator: shift semigroups and invariant subspaces

A closed subspace is invariant under the Cesàro operator $\mathcal{C}$ on the classical Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb D)$ if and only if its orthogonal complement is invariant under the $C_0$-semigroup of composition operators induced by the affine maps $φ_t(z)= e^{-t}z + 1 - e^{-t}$ for $t\geq 0$ and $z\in \mathbb D$. The corresponding result also holds in the Hardy spaces $H^p(\mathbb D)$ for $1<p<\infty$. Moreover, in the Hilbert space setting, by linking the invariant subspaces of $\mathcal{C}$ to the lattice of the closed invariant subspaces of the standard right-shift semigroup acting on a particular weighted $L^2$-space on the line, we exhibit a large class of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces and provide a complete characterization of the finite codimensional ones, establishing, in particular, the limits of such an approach towards describing the lattice of all invariant subspaces of $\mathcal{C}$. Finally, we present a functional calculus argument which allows us to extend a recent result by Mashreghi, Ptak and Ross regarding the square root of $\mathcal{C}$, and discuss its invariant subspaces.

Multiplication by a finite Blaschke product on weighted Bergman spaces: commutant and reducing subspaces

We provide a characterization of the commutant of analytic Toeplitz operators $T_B$ induced by finite Blachke products $B$ acting on weighted Bergman spaces which, as a particular instance, yields the case $B(z)=z^n$ on the Bergman space solved recently by by Abkar, Cao and Zhu. Moreover, it extends previous results by Cowen and Wahl in this context and applies to other Banach spaces of analytic functions such as Hardy spaces $H^p$ for $1<p<\infty$. Finally, we apply this approach to study the reducing subspaces of $T_{B}$ in weighted Bergman spaces.

Generators of $C_0$-semigroups of weighted composition operators

We prove that in a large class of Banach spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ an (unbounded) operator $Af=G\cdot f'+g\cdot f$ with $G,\, g$ analytic in $\mathbb{D}$ generates a $C_0$-semigroup of weighted composition operators if and only if it generates a $C_0$-semigroup. Particular instances of such spaces are the classical Hardy spaces. Our result generalizes previous results in this context and it is related to cocycles of flows of analytic functions on Banach spaces. Likewise, for a large class of non-separable Banach spaces $X $ of analytic functions in $\mathbb{D}$ contained in the Bloch space, we prove that no non-trivial holomorphic flow induces a $C_0$-semigroup of weighted composition operators on $X$. This generalizes previous results regarding $C_0$-semigroup of (unweighted) composition operators.

Invariant subspaces for positive operators on Banach spaces with unconditional basis

We prove that every lattice homomorphism acting on a Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ with the lattice structure given by an unconditional basis has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. In fact, it has a non-trivial closed invariant ideal, which is no longer true for every positive operator on such a space. Motivated by these later examples, we characterize tridiagonal positive operators without non-trivial closed invariant ideals on $\mathcal{X}$ extending to this context a result of Grivaux on the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces for tridiagonal operators.

Invariant subspaces for Bishop operators and beyond

Bishop operators $T_α$ acting on $L^2[0,1)$ were proposed by E. Bishop in the fifties as possible operators which might entail counterexamples for the Invariant Subspace Problem. We prove that all the Bishop operators are biquasitriangular and, derive as a consequence that they are norm limits of nilpotent operators. Moreover, by means of arithmetical techniques along with a theorem of Atzmon, the set of irrationals $α\in (0,1)$ for which $T_α$ is known to possess non-trivial closed invariant subspaces is considerably enlarged, extending previous results by Davie, MacDonald and Flattot. Furthermore, we essentially show that when our approach fails to produce invariant subspaces it is actually because Atzmon Theorem cannot be applied. Finally, upon applying arithmetical bounds obtained, we deduce local spectral properties of Bishop operators proving, in particular, that neither of them satisfy the Dunford property $(C)$.

$C_0$-semigroups of 2-isometries and Dirichlet spaces

In the context of a theorem of Richter, we establish a similarity between $C_0$-semigroups of analytic 2-isometries $\{T(t)\}_{t\geq0}$ acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and the multiplication operator semigroup $\{M_{ϕ_t}\}_{t\geq 0}$ induced by $ϕ_t(s)=\exp (-st)$ for $s$ in the right-half plane $\mathbb{C}_+$ acting boundedly on weighted Dirichlet spaces on $\mathbb{C}_+$. As a consequence, we derive a connection with the right shift semigroup $\{S_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ $$ S_tf(x)=\left \{ \begin{array}{ll} 0 & \mbox { if }0\leq t\leq x, \\ f(x-t)& \mbox { if } x>t, \end{array} \right . $$ acting on a weighted Lebesgue space on the half line $\mathbb{R}_+$ and address some applications regarding the study of the invariant subspaces of $C_0$-semigroups of analytic 2-isometries.
