Analogs of quantum Hall effect edge states in photonic crystals

"Photonic crystals" built with time-reversal-symmetry-breaking Faraday-effect media can exhibit "chiral" edge modes that propagate unidirectionally along boundaries across which the Faraday axis reverses. These modes are precise analogs of the electronic edge states of quantum Hall effect (QHE) systems, and are also immune to backscattering and localization by disorder. The "Berry curvature" of the photonic bands plays a role analogous to that of the magnetic field in the QHE. Explicit calculations demonstrating the existence of such unidirectionally-propagating photonic edge states are presented.

Quantum Spin Hall Effect and Topologically Invariant Chern Numbers

We present a topological description of quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in a two-dimensional electron system on honeycomb lattice with both intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. We show that the topology of the band insulator can be characterized by a $2\times 2$ traceless matrix of first Chern integers. The nontrivial QSHE phase is identified by the nonzero diagonal matrix elements of the Chern number matrix (CNM). A spin Chern number is derived from the CNM, which is conserved in the presence of finite disorder scattering and spin nonconserving Rashba coupling. By using the Laughlin's gedanken experiment, we numerically calculate the spin polarization and spin transfer rate of the conducting edge states, and determine a phase diagram for the QSHE.

Spin Hall Effect and Spin Transfer in Disordered Rashba Model

Based on numerical study of the Rashba model, we show that the spin Hall conductance remains finite in the presence of disorder up to a characteristic length scale, beyond which it vanishes exponentially with the system size. We further perform a Laughlin's gauge experiment numerically and find that all energy levels cannot cross each other during an adiabatic insertion of the flux in accordance with the general level-repulsion rule. It results in zero spin transfer between two edges of the sample as each state always evolves back after the insertion of one flux quantum, in contrast to the quantum Hall effect. It implies that the topological spin Hall effect vanishes with the turn-on of disorder.

Nondissipative Spin Hall Effect via Quantized Edge Transport

The spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron system on honeycomb lattice with both intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit couplings is studied numerically. Integer quantized spin Hall conductance is obtained at zero Rashba coupling limit when electron Fermi energy lies in the energy gap created by the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, in agreement with recent theoretical prediction. While nonzero Rashba coupling destroys electron spin conservation, the spin Hall conductance is found to remain near the quantized value, being insensitive to disorder scattering, until the energy gap collapses with increasing the Rashba coupling. We further show that the charge transport through counterpropagating spin-polarized edge channels is well quantized, which is associated with a topological invariant of the system.

Luttinger's Theorem and Bosonization of the Fermi Surface

A course of four lectures given at the International School of Physics "Enrico Fermi", Varenna, Italy, July 1992, in which the underlying algebraic structure needed for bosonization of the Fermi surface in two- or three-dimensions was first described. This is an unchanged 1993 preprint version of a published but hard-to-find (and often mis-cited) 1994 article in the Varenna Summer School proceedings. The d > 1 dimensional generalization of the Kac-Moody algebra on the Fermi surface is presented, and the Gaussian reduction of the Fermi liquid to harmonic oscilator modes is derived. One-dimensional bosonization and the symmetries of spin-charge separation are also reviewed.

Mobility gap in fractional quantum Hall liquids: Effects of disorder and layer thickness

We study the behavior of two-dimensional electron gas in the fractional quantum Hall regime in the presence of finite layer thickness and correlated disordered potential. Generalizing the Chern number calculation to many-body systems, we determine the mobility gaps of fractional quantum Hall states based on the distribution of Chern numbers in a microscopic model. We find excellent agreement between experimentally measured activation gaps and our calculated mobility gaps, when combining the effects of both disordered potential and layer thickness. We clarify the difference between mobility gap and spectral gap of fractional quantum Hall states and explain the disorder-driven collapse of the gap and the subsequent transitions from the fractional quantum Hall states to insulator.

Berry Curvature on the Fermi Surface: Anomalous Hall Effect as a Topological Fermi-Liquid Property

The intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in metallic ferromagnets is shown to be controlled by Berry phases accumulated by adiabatic motion of quasiparticles on the Fermi surface, and is purely a Fermi-liquid property, not a ``bulk'' Fermi sea property like Landau diamagnetism, as has been previously supposed. Berry phases are a new topological ingredient that must be added to Landau Fermi-liquid theory in the presence of broken inversion or time-reversal symmetry.

Disorder driven collapse of the mobility gap and transition to an insulator in fractional quantum Hall effect

We study the nu=1/3 quantum Hall state in presence of the random disorder. We calculate the topologically invariant Chern number, which is the only quantity known at present to unambiguously distinguish between insulating and current carrying states in an interacting system. The mobility gap can be determined numerically this way, which is found to agree with experimental value semiquantitatively. As the disorder strength increases towards a critical value, both the mobility gap and plateau width narrow continuously and ultimately collapse leading to an insulating phase.

Exact diagonalization study of domain structure in integer filling factor quantum Hall ferromagnets

Opposite spin Landau levels in a quantum well can be brought into coincidence by tilting the magnetic field away from normal orientation. We demonstrate that the magnetotransport anomaly at integer filling factors that was recently discovered by Pan {\it et al} is due to such a coincidence. By performing exact diagonalization calculations using microscopically evaluated effective electron-electron interactions, we are able to establish that the electronic ground state at coincidence is an Ising quantum Hall ferromagnet and that the low energy excitations correspond to the formation of a domain wall.

Electromagnetic Surface Modes at Interfaces with Negative Refractive Index make a "Not-Quite-Perfect" Lens

Interfaces between media with negative relative refractive index generically support propagating electromagnetic surface polariton modes with large wavenumber. The relation of these modes to a recent prediction by Pendry of ``perfect (real) image formation'' by a parallel slab of negative-refractive-index material is analyzed. The ``perfect image'' theory is found to be incomplete without inclusion of a large-wavenumber cutoff that derives from a necessary wavenumber-dependence of the constitutive relations, and which controls the resolution of the image.

Wigner Crystals in the lowest Landau level at low filling factors

We report on results of finite-size numerical studies of partially filled lowest Landau level at low electron filling factors. We find convincing evidence suggesting that electrons form Wigner Crystals at sufficiently low filling factors, and the critical filling factor is close to 1/7. At nu=1/7 we find the system undergoes a phase transition from Wigner Crystal to the incompressible Laughlin state when the short-range part of the Coulomb interaction is modified slightly. This transition is either continuous or very weakly first order.

Incompressible paired Hall state, stripe order and the composite fermion liquid phase in half-filled Landau levels

We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu =5/2), we find a first order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level but the transition point is not near the Coulomb potential.

Spontaneous Breakdown of Translational Symmetry in Quantum Hall Systems: Crystalline Order in High Landau Levels

We report on results of systematic numerical studies of two-dimensional electron gas systems subject to a perpendicular magnetic field, with a high Landau level partially filled by electrons. Our results are strongly suggestive of a breakdown of translational symmetry and the presence of crystalline order in the ground state. This is in sharp contrast with the physics of the lowest and first excited Landau levels, and in good qualitative agreement with earlier Hartree-Fock studies. Experimental implications of our results are discussed.

Charge Density Wave Ordering in Half Filled High Landau Levels

We report on numerical studies of two-dimensional electron systems in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, with a high Landau level index (N > 1) half filled by electrons. Strong and sharp peaks are found in the wave vector dependence of both static density susceptibility and equal-time density-density correlation function, in finite-size systems with up to twelve electrons. Qualitatively different from partially filled lowest (N=0) Landau level, these results are suggestive of a tendency toward charge density wave ordering in these systems. The ordering wave vector is found to decrease with increasing N.

A dipole interpretation of the $ν=1/2$ state

We consider the problem of Bosonic particles interacting repulsively in a strong magnetic field at the filling factor $ν=1$. We project the system in the Lowest Landau Level and set up a formalism to map the dynamics into an interacting Fermion system. Within a mean field approximation we find that the composite Fermions behave as a gas of neutral dipoles and we expect that the low energy limit also describes the physical $ν=1/2$ Fermionic state.

``Bare'' Effective Mass in Finite Sized $ν= 1/2$ Systems

In this note, we discuss the effective mass of quasiparticles in finite sized $ν= 1/2$ systems in the lowest Landau level, given a natural notion we have of the Fermi surface in these finite sized systems. The effective mass is related to the difference between instantaneous density-density response functions of the ground state and excited states of the system; we do a finite size calculation for this difference for $ν= 1/2$ systems with 7, 8 and 9 fermions, and conjecture how the difference must look in the thermodynamic limit.

A Gauge Invariant Way to Evaluate Quasiparticle Effective Mass in Fermionic Systems with Gauge Interactions

In this paper, we propose a gauge-invariant way to define and calculate the effective mass for quasiparticles in systems with gauge interactions, and apply it to a model closely related to the half-filled Landau level problem. Our model is equivalent to the Halperin-Lee-Read $ν= 1/2$ Hamiltonian with an ultraviolet cutoff $Λ$ for the gauge fields, and we expand our answer in powers of $Λ/ k_F$, assuming it is small. In this definition the effective mass depends only on the gauge-invariant density and current response functions of the system. Within RPA, this definition yields a finite result for the effective mass in our model. We also comment on corrections to this effective mass formula when processes beyond RPA are included. Finally, we comment briefly on the observation that organizing the perturbation expansion in powers of $Λ/ k_F$ is a way to systematically study the physics beyond RPA.
