Edge Excitations of the $ν= 2/3$ Spin-Singlet Quantum Hall State

The spectrum of edge excitations is derived for the spin-unpolarized $ν= 2$ and $ν= 2/3$ FQHE. Numerical diagonalization of a system of six electrons on a disc confirms that the edge $ν= 2/3$ spin-singlet FQHE state consists of oppositely directed spin and charge branches on the same physical edge. The highly correlated $ν= 2/3$ singlet edge is shown to have the same spin branch as the $ν= 2$ singlet edge, providing evidence that the same $SU(2)_{k = 1}$ Kac-Moody algebra describes all unmixed spin branches. The spin and charge branches of the singlet state at $ν= 2/3$ are less coupled than the two branches of the spin-polarized state at the same filling factor, suggesting that the conductance along an edge may increase sharply across the polarized-unpolarized transition.

Landau Level Mixing and Levitation of Extended States in Two Dimensions

We study the effects of mixing of different Landau levels on the energies of one-body states, in the presence of a strong uniform magnetic field and a random potential in two dimensions. We use a perturbative approach and develop a systematic expansion in both the strength and smoothness of the random potential. We find the energies of the extended states shift {\em upward}, and the amount of levitation is proportional to $(n+1/2)/B^3$ for strong magnetic field, where $B$ is the magnetic field strength and $n$ is the Landau level index.

Topological Phase Transition in the $ν=2/3$ Quantum Hall Effect

The double layer $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall system is studied using the edge state formalism and finite-size diagonalization subject to periodic boundary conditions. Transitions between three different ground states are observed as the separation as well as the tunneling between the two layers is varied. Experimental consequences are discussed.

Single-particle Green's functions of the Calogero-Sutherland model at couplings λ= 1/2, 1, and 2

At coupling strengths lambda = 1/2, 1, or 2, the Calogero-Sutherland model (CSM) is related to Brownian motion in a Wigner-Dyson random matrix ensemble with orthogonal, unitary, or symplectic symmetry. Using this relation in conjunction with superanalytic techniques developed in mesoscopic conductor physics, we derive an exact integral representation for the CSM two-particle Green's function in the thermodynamic limit. Simple closed expressions for the single-particle Green's functions are extracted by separation of points. For the advanced part, where a particle is added to the ground state and later removed, a sum of two contributions is found: the expected one with just one particle excitation present, plus an extra term arising from fractionalization of the single particle into a number of elementary particle and hole excitations.

Stability of Chiral Luttinger Liquids and Abelian Quantum Hall States.

A criterion is given for topological stability of Abelian quantum Hall states, and of Luttinger liquids at the boundaries between such states; this suggests a selection rule on states in the quantum Hall hierarchy theory. The linear response of Luttinger liquids to electromagnetic fields is described: the Hall conductance is quantized, irrespective of whether edge modes propagate in different directions.

Integrals of motion of the Haldane Shastry Model

In this letter we develop a method to construct all the integrals of motion of the $SU(p)$ Haldane-Shastry model of spins, equally spaced around a circle, interacting through a $1/r^2$ exchange interaction. These integrals of motion respect the Yangian symmetry algebra of the Hamiltonian.

Laughlin State on Stretched and Squeezed Cylinders and Edge Excitations in Quantum Hall Effect

We study the Laughlin wave function on the cylinder. We find it only describes an incompressible fluid when the two lengths of the cylinder are comparable. As the radius is made smaller at fixed area, we observe a continuous transition to the charge density wave Tao-Thouless state. We also present some exact properties of the wave function in its polynomial form. We then study the edge excitations of the quantum Hall incompressible fluid modeled by the Laughlin wave function. The exponent describing the fluctuation of the edge predicted by recent theories is shown to be identical with numerical calculations. In particular, for $ν=1/3$, we obtain the occupation amplitudes of edge state $n(k)$ for 4-10 electron size systems. When plotted as a function of the scaled wave vector they become essentially free of finite-size effects. The resulting curve obtains a very good agreement with the appropriate infinite-size Calogero-Sutherland model occupation numbers. Finally, we numerically obtain $n(k)$ of the edge excitations for some pairing states which may be relevant to the $ν=5/2$ incompressible Hall state.

Elementary Excitations of One-Dimensional t-J Model with Inverse-Square Exchange

We identify exact excitation content of the intermediate states for the one-particle Green's functions, spin-spin and (charge) density-density correlation functions of the periodic one-dimensional $t$-$J$ model with inverse square exchange. The excitations consist of neutral $S=1/2$ spinons and spinless (charge $-e$) holons with semionic fractional statistics, and bosonic (charge +2$e$) ``anti-holons'' which are excitations of the holon condensate. Due to the supersymmetric Yangian quantum symmetry of this model, only the excited states with {\it finite} number of elementary excitations contribute to the spectral functions. We find a set of selection rules, and this allows us to map out the regions of non-vanishing spectral weight in the energy-momentum space for the various correlation functions.

Dynamical T=0 correlations of the S=1/2 1D Heisenberg Anti-Ferromagnet with 1/r^2 exchange in a magnetic field

We present a new selection rule for matrix elements of local spin operators in the $S=1/2$ ``Haldane-Shastry'' model. Based on this rule we extend a recent exact calculation \cite{H93} of the ground-state dynamical spin correlation function $S^{ab}(n,t)$ = $\langle 0 | S^a(n,t)S^b(0,0)| 0 \rangle$ and its Fourier-transform $S^{ab}(Q,E)$ of this model to a finite magnetic field. In zero field, only {\it two-spinon} excitations contribute to the spectral function; in the (positively) partially-spin-polarized case, there are two types of elementary excitations: {\it spinons} ($ΔS^z = \pm 1/2$) and {\it magnons} ($ΔS^z = -1 $). The magnons are divided into left- or right-moving branches. The only classes of excited states contributing to the spectral functions are: (I) two spinons, (II) two spinons + one magnon, (IIIa) two spinons + two magnons (moving in opposite directions), (IIIb) one magnon. The contributions to the various correlations are: $S^{-+}$: (I); $S^{zz}$: (I)+(II); $S^{+-}$: (I)+(II)+(III). In the zero-field limit there are no magnons, while in the fully-polarized case, there are no spinons. We discuss the relation of the spectral functions to correlations of the Calogero-Sutherland model at coupling $λ= 2$.

Physics of the Ideal Semion Gas: Spinons and Quantum Symmetries of the Integrable Haldane-Shastry Spin Chain

Various aspects of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain with 1/r^2 exchange, and its various generalizations, are reviewed, with emphasis on its Yangian quantum group structure, and the interpretation of the model as the generalization of an ideal gas (of ``spinons'') to the case of fractional statistics. Some recent results on its dynamical correlation function are discussed, and conjectured extensions of these remarkably simple results to the $SU(n)$ model, and to the related Calogero-Sutherland model with integer coupling constant, are presented. Exact calculation of the ground-state dynamical spin correlation function of a S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with free spinons

We calculate the exact dynamical magnetic structure factor S(Q,E) in the ground state of a one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet with gapless free S=1/2 spinon excitations, the Haldane-Shastry model with inverse-square exchange, which is in the same low-energy universality class as Bethe's nearest-neighbor exchange model. Only two-spinon excited states contribute, and S(Q,E) is found to be a very simple integral over these states.

Yang-Baxter equation in spin chains with long range interactions

We consider the $ su(n) $ spin chains with long range interactions and the spin generalization of the Calogero-Sutherland models. We show that their properties derive from a transfer matrix obeying the Yang-Baxter equation. We obtain the expression of the conserved quantities and we diagonalize them.

On Models with Inverse-Square Exchange

A one-dimensional quantum N-body system of either fermions or bosons with $SU(n)$ colors interacting via inverse-square exchange is presented in this article. A class of eigenstates of both the continuum and lattice version of the model Hamiltonians is constructed in terms of the Jastrow-product type wave function. The class of states we construct in this paper corresponds to the ground state and the low energy excitations of the model that can be described by the effective harmonic fluid Hamiltonian. By expanding the energy about the ground state we find the harmonic fluid parameters (i.e. the charge, spin velocities, etc.), explicitly. The correlation exponent and the compressibility of are also found. As expected the general harmonic relation(i.e. $v_S=(v_Nv_J)^{1/2}$) is satisfied among the charge and spin velocities.
