Non-Collinearity in Small Magnetic Cobalt-Benzene Molecules

Organometallic clusters based on transition metal atoms are interesting because possible applications in spintronics and quantum information. In addition to the enhanced magnetism at the nanoscale, the organic ligands may provide a natural shield again unwanted magnetic interactions with the matrices required for applications. Here we show that the organic ligands may lead to non-collinear magnetic order as well as the expected quenching of the magnetic moments. We use different density functional theory (DFT) methods to study the experimentally relevant three cobalt atoms surrounded by benzene rings (Co$_3$Bz$_3$). We found that the benzene rings induce a ground state with non-collinear magnetization, with the magnetic moments localized on the cobalt centers and lying on the plane formed by the three cobalt atoms. We further analyze the magnetism of such a cluster using an anisotropic Heisenberg model where the involved parameters are obtained by a comparison with the DFT results. These results may also explain the recent observation of null magnetic moment of Co$_3$Bz$_3^+$. Moreover, we propose an additional experimental verification based on electron paramagnetic resonance.

Spin decoherence of magnetic atoms on surfaces

We review the problem of spin decoherence of magnetic atoms deposited on a surface. Recent breakthroughs in scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) make it possible to probe the spin dynamics of individual atoms, either isolated or integrated in nanoengineered spin structures. Transport pump and probe techniques with spin polarized tips permit measuring the spin relaxation time $T_1$, while novel demonstration of electrically driven STM single spin resonance has provided a direct measurement of the spin decoherence time $T_2$ of an individual magnetic adatom. Here we address the problem of spin decoherence from the theoretical point of view. First we provide a short general overview of decoherence in open quantum systems and we discuss with some detail ambiguities that arise in the case of degenerate spectra, relevant for magnetic atoms. Second, we address the physical mechanisms that allows probing the spin coherence of magnetic atoms on surfaces. Third, we discuss the main spin decoherence mechanisms at work on a surface, most notably, Kondo interaction, but also spin-phonon coupling and dephasing by Johnson noise. Finally, we propose some schemes to engineer spin decoherence.

RKKY oscillations in the spin relaxation rates of atomic scale nanomagnets

Exchange interactions with itinerant electrons are known to act as a relaxation mechanism for individual local spins. The same exchange interactions are also known to induce the so called RKKY indirect exchange interaction between two otherwise decoupled local spins. Here we show that both the spin relaxation and the RKKY coupling can be seen as the dissipative and reactive response to the coupling of the local spins with the itinerant electrons. We thereby predict that the spin relaxation rates of magnetic nanostructures of exchanged coupled local spins, such as as nanoengineered spin chains, have an oscillatory dependence on $k_F d$ , where $k_F$ is the Fermi wave length and $d$ is the inter-spin distance, very much like the celebrated oscillations in the RKKY interaction. We demonstrate that both $T_1$ and $T_2$ can be enhanced or suppressed, compared to the single spin limit, depending on the interplay between the Fermi surface and the nanostructure geometrical arrangement. Our results open a route to engineer spin relaxation and decoherence in atomically designed spin structures.

On the topological type of a set of plane valuations with symmetries

Let $\{C_i : i=1,\ldots,r\}$ be a set of irreducible plane curve singularities. For an action of a finite group $G$, let $Δ^{L}(\{t_{a i}\})$ be the Alexander polynomial in $r\vert G\vert$ variables of the algebraic link $(\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^{r}\bigcup\limits_{a\in G}a C_i )\cap S^3_{\varepsilon}$ and let $ζ(t_1,\ldots, t_r) = Δ^{L}(t_1,\ldots,t_1,t_2,\ldots,t_2, \ldots,t_r,\ldots,t_r)$ with $\vert G\vert$ identical variables in each group. (If $r=1$, $ζ(t)$ is the monodromy zeta function of the function germ $\prod\limits_{a\in G} a^*f$, where $f=0$ is an equation defining the curve $C_1$.) We prove that $ζ(t_1,\ldots, t_r)$ determines the topological type of the link $L$. We prove an analogous statement for plane divisorial valuations formulated in terms of the Poincaré series of a set of valuations.

Pencils and critical locus on normal surfaces

We study linear pencils of curves on normal surface singularities. Using the minimal good resolution of the pencil, we describe the topological type of generic elements of the pencil and characterize the behaviour of special elements. Then we show that the critical locus associated to the pencil is linked to the special elements. This gives a decomposition of the critical locus through the minimal good resolution and as a consequence, information on the topological type of the critical locus.

Equivariant Poincaré series and topology of valuations

The equivariant with respect to a finite group action Poincaré series of a collection of $r$ valuations was defined earlier as a power series in $r$ variables with the coefficients from a modification of the Burnside ring of the group. Here we show that (modulo simple exceptions) the equivariant Poincaré series determines the equivariant topology of the collection of valuations.

On Poincaré series of filtrations

In this survey one discusses the notion of the Poincaré series of multi-index filtrations, an alternative approach to the definition, a method of computation of the Poincaré series based on the notion of integration with respect to the Euler characteristic (or rather on an infinite-dimensional version of it), generalizations of the notion of the multi-variable Poincaré series based on the notion of the motivic integration, and relations of the latter ones with some zeta functions over finite fields and with generating series of Heegaard-Floer homologies of algebraic links.

Consequences of Kondo exchange on quantum spins

When individual quantum spins are placed in close proximity to conducting substrates, the localized spin is coupled to the nearby itinerant conduction electrons via Kondo exchange. In the strong coupling limit this can result in the Kondo effect - the formation of a correlated, many body singlet state - and a resulting renormalization of the density of states near the Fermi energy. However, even when Kondo screening does not occur, Kondo exchange can give rise to a wide variety of other phenomena. In addition to the well known renormalization of the g factor and the finite spin decoherence and relaxation times, Kondo exchange has recently been found to give rise to a newly discovered effect: the renormalization of the single ion magnetic anisotropy. Here we put these apparently different phenomena on equal footing by treating the effect of Kondo exchange perturbatively. In this formalism, the central quantity is $ρJ$, the product of the density of states at the Fermi energy $ρ$ and the Kondo exchange constant J. We show that perturbation theory correctly describes the experimentally observed exchange induced shifts of the single spin excitation energies, demonstrating that Kondo exchange can be used to tune the effective magnetic anisotropy of a single spin.

An equivariant Poincaré series of filtrations and monodromy zeta functions

We define a new equivariant (with respect to a finite group $G$ action) version of the Poincaré series of a multi-index filtration as an element of the power series ring ${\widetilde{A}}(G)[[t_1, \ldots, t_r]]$ for a certain modification ${\widetilde{A}}(G)$ of the Burnside ring of the group $G$. We give a formula for this Poincaré series of a collection of plane valuations in terms of a $G$-resolution of the collection. We show that, for filtrations on the ring of germs of functions in two variables defined by the curve valuations corresponding to the irreducible components of a plane curve singularity defined by a $G$-invariant function germ, in the majority of cases this equivariant Poincaré series determines the corresponding equivariant monodromy zeta functions defined earlier.

The emergence of classical behavior in magnetic adatoms

A wide class of nanomagnets shows striking quantum behavior, known as quantum spin tunneling (QST): instead of two degenerate ground states with opposite magnetizations, a bonding-antibonding pair forms, resulting in a splitting of the ground state doublet with wave functions linear combination of two classically opposite magnetic states, leading to the quenching of their magnetic moment. Here we study how QST is destroyed and classical behavior emerges in the case of magnetic adatoms, as the strength of their coupling, either to the substrate or to each other, is increased. Both spin-substrate and spin-spin coupling renormalize the QST splitting to zero allowing the environmental decoherence to eliminate superpositions between classical states, leading to the emergence of spontaneous magnetization.

Spin wave imaging in atomically designed nanomagnets

The spin dynamics of all ferromagnetic materials are governed by two types of collective excitations: spin waves and domain walls. The fundamental processes underlying these collective modes, such as exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropy, all originate at the atomic scale; yet, conventional probing techniques, based on neutron and photon scattering, provide high resolution in reciprocal space, and thereby poor spatial resolution. Here we present direct imaging of spin waves in individual chains of ferromagnetically coupled $S=2$ Fe atoms, assembled one by one on a Cu$_2$N surface using a scanning tunnelling microscope. We are able to map the spin dynamics of these designer nanomagnets with atomic resolution, in two complementary ways. First, atom to atom variations of the amplitude of the quantized spin wave excitations, predicted by theory, are probed using inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy. Second, we observe slow stochastic switching between two opposite magnetisation states, whose rate varies strongly depending on the location of the tip along the chain. Our observations, combined with model calculations, reveal that switches of the chain are initiated by a spin wave excited state which has its antinodes at the edges of the chain, followed by a domain wall shifting through the chain from one end to the other. This approach opens the way towards atomic scale imaging of other types of spin excitations, such as spinons and fractional end-states, in engineered spin chains.

Local probe of fractional edge states of S=1 Heisenberg spin chains

Spin chains are among the simplest physical systems in which electron-electron interactions induce novel states of matter. Here we show that the combination of atomic scale engineering and spectroscopic capabilities of state of the art scanning tunnel microscopy enables probing the fractionalized edge states of individual atomic scale S=1 spin chains. These edge states arise from the topological order of the ground state in the Haldane phase. We also show that the Haldane gap and the spin-spin correlation length can be measured with the same technique.

Hilbert function, generalized Poincaré series and topology of plane valuations

To a multi-index filtration (say, on the ring of germs of functions on a germ of a complex analytic variety) one associates several invariants: the Hilbert function, the Poincaré series, the generalized Poincaré series, and the generalized semigroup Poincaré series. The Hilbert function and the generalized Poincaré series are equivalent in the sense that each of them determines the other one. We show that for a filtration on the ring of germs of holomorphic functions in two variables defined by a collection of plane valuations both of them are equivalent to the generalized semigroup Poincaré series and determine the topology of the collection of valuations, i.e. the topology of its minimal resolution.

Graphene single electron transistor as a spin sensor for magnetic adsorbates

We study single electron transport through a graphene quantum dot with magnetic adsorbates. We focus on the relation between the spin order of the adsorbates and the linear conductance of the device. The electronic structure of the graphene dot with magnetic adsorbates is modeled through numerical diagonalization of a tight-binding model with an exchange potential. We consider several mechanisms by which the adsorbate magnetic state can influence transport in a single electron transistor: by tuning the addition energy, by changing the tunneling rate and, in the case of spin polarized electrodes, through magnetoresistive effects. Whereas the first mechanism is always present, the others require that the electrode has either an energy or spin dependent density of states. We find that graphene dots are optimal systems to detect the spin state of a few magnetic centers.

Intrinsic spin noise in MgO magnetic tunnel junctions

We consider two intrinsic sources of noise in ultra-sensitive magnetic field sensors based on MgO magnetic tunnel junctions, coming both from $^{25}$Mg nuclear spins ($I=5/2$, 10% natural abundance), and S=1 Mg-vacancies. While nuclear spins induce noise peaked in the MHz frequency range, the vacancies noise peaks in the GHz range. We find that the nuclear noise in submicron devices has a similar magnitude than the $1/f$ noise, while the vacancy-induced noise dominates in the GHz range. Interestingly, the noise spectrum under a finite magnetic field gradient may provide spatial information about the spins in the MgO layer.

Probing a Single Nuclear Spin in a Silicon Single Electron Transistor

We study single electron transport across a single Bi dopant in a Silicon Nanotransistor to assess how the strong hyperfine coupling with the Bi nuclear spin $I=9/2$ affects the transport characteristics of the device. In the sequential tunneling regime we find that at, temperatures in the range of $100 mK$, $dI/dV$ curves reflect the zero field hyperfine splitting as well as its evolution under an applied magnetic field. Our non-equilibrium quantum simulations show that nuclear spins can be partially polarized parallel or antiparallel to the electronic spin just tuning the applied bias.

Equivariant Poincaré series of filtrations and topology

Earlier, for an action of a finite group $G$ on a germ of an analytic variety, an equivariant $G$-Poincaré series of a multi-index filtration in the ring of germs of functions on the variety was defined as an element of the Grothendieck ring of $G$-sets with an additional structure. We discuss to which extend the $G$-Poincaré series of a filtration defined by a set of curve or divisorial valuations on the ring of germs of analytic functions in two variables determines the (equivariant) topology of the curve or of the set of divisors.

Storage of classical information in quantum spins

Digital magnetic recording is based on the storage of a bit of information in the orientation of a magnetic system with two stable ground states. Here we address two fundamental problems that arise when this is done on a quantized spin: quantum spin tunneling and back-action of the readout process. We show that fundamental differences exist between integer and semi-integer spins when it comes to both, read and record classical information in a quantized spin. Our findings imply fundamental limits to the miniaturization of magnetic bits and are relevant to recent experiments where spin polarized scanning tunneling microscope reads and records a classical bit in the spin orientation of a single magnetic atom.
