Cotunneling theory of inelastic STM spin spectroscopy

We propose cotunneling as the microscopic mechanism that makes possible inelastic electron spectroscopy of magnetic atoms in surfaces for a wide range of systems, including single magnetic adatoms, molecules and molecular stacks. We describe electronic transport between the scanning tip and the conducting surface through the magnetic system (MS) with a generalized Anderson model, without making use of effective spin models. Transport and spin dynamics are described with an effective cotunneling Hamiltonian in which the correlations in the magnetic system are calculated exactly and the coupling to the electrodes is included up to second order in the tip-MS and MS-substrate. In the adequate limit our approach is equivalent to the phenomenological Kondo exchange model that successfully describe the experiments . We apply our method to study in detail inelastic transport in two systems, stacks of Cobalt Phthalocyanines and a single Mn atom on Cu$_2$N. Our method accounts both, for the large contribution of the inelastic spin exchange events to the conductance and the observed conductance asymmetry.

Equivariant Poincare series of filtrations

We offer a new approach to a definition of an equivariant version of the Poincaré series. This Poincaré series is defined not as a power series, but as an element of the Grothendieck ring of $G$-sets with an additional structure. We compute this Poincaré series for natural filtrations on the ring of germs of functions on the plane $(\C^2,0)$ with a finite group representation.

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy of a single nuclear spin

Detection of a single nuclear spin constitutes an outstanding problem in different fields of physics such as quantum computing or magnetic imaging. Here we show that the energy levels of a single nuclear spin can be measured by means of inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). We consider two different systems, a magnetic adatom probed with STM and a single Bi dopant in a Silicon nanotransistor. We find that the hyperfine coupling opens new transport channels which can be resolved at experimentally accessible temperatures. Our simulations evince that IETS yield information about the occupation of the nuclear spin states, paving the way towards transport-detected single nuclear spin resonance.

Spin dynamics of current driven single magnetic adatoms and molecules

A scanning tunneling microscope can probe the inelastic spin excitations of a single magnetic atom in a surface via spin-flip assisted tunneling in which transport electrons exchange spin and energy with the atomic spin. If the inelastic transport time, defined as the average time elapsed between two inelastic spin flip events, is shorter than the atom spin relaxation time, the STM current can drive the spin out of equilibrium. Here we model this process using rate equations and a model Hamiltonian that describes successfully spin flip assisted tunneling experiments, including a single Mn atom, a Mn dimer and Fe Phthalocyanine molecules. When the STM current is not spin polarized, the non-equilibrium spin dynamics of the magnetic atom results in non-monotonic $dI/dV$ curves. In the case of spin polarized STM current, the spin orientation of the magnetic atom can be controlled parallel or anti-parallel to the magnetic moment of the tip. Thus, spin polarized STM tips can be used both to probe and to control the magnetic moment of a single atom.

Spin-transfer torque on a single magnetic adatom

We theoretically show how the spin orientation of a single magnetic adatom can be controlled by spin polarized electrons in a scanning tunneling microscope configuration. The underlying physical mechanism is spin assisted inelastic tunneling. By changing the direction of the applied current, the orientation of the magnetic adatom can be completely reversed on a time scale that ranges from a few nanoseconds to microseconds, depending on bias and temperature. The changes in the adatom magnetization direction are, in turn, reflected in the tunneling conductance.

Tunneling spectroscopy of spin-selective Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a lateral triple quantum dot molecule

We present a theory of tunneling spectroscopy of spin-selective Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a lateral triple quantum dot molecule. The theory combines exact treatment of an isolated many-body system with the rate equation approach when the quantum dot molecule is weakly connected to the leads subject to arbitrary source-drain bias. The tunneling spectroscopy of the many-body complex is analyzed using the spectral functions of the system and applied to holes in a quantum dot molecule. Negative differential conductance is predicted and explained as a result of the redistribution of the spectral weight between transport channels. It is shown that different interference effects on singlet and triplet hole states in a magnetic field lead to spin-selective Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.

Poincare series of collections of plane valuations

In earlier papers there were given formulae for the Poincare series of multi-index filtrations on the ring of germs of functions of two variables defined by collections of valuations corresponding to (reducible) plane curve singularities and by collections of divisorial ones. It was shown that the Poincare series of a collection of divisorial valuations determines the topology of the collection of divisors. Here we give a formula for the Poincare series of a general collection of valuations on the ring of germs of functions of two variables centred at the origin and prove a generalization of the statement that the Poincare series determines the topology of the collection.

Poincare series of filtrations corresponding to ideals on surfaces

Earlier the authors considered and, in some cases, computed Poincare series of two sorts of multi-index filtrations on the ring of germs of functions on a complex (normal) surface singularity (in particular on the complex plane). A filtration from the first class was defined by a curve (with several branches) on the surface singularity. The other one (so called divisorial filtration) was defined by a set of components of the exceptional divisor of a modification of the surface singularity. Here we define a filtration corresponding to an ideal or to a set of ideals in the ring of germs of functions on a surface singularity and compute the corresponding Poincare series in some cases. For the complex plane this notion unites the two classes of filtrations described above.

Spin selective Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a lateral triple quantum dot

We present a theory for spin selective Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a lateral triple quantum dot. We show that to understand the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in an interacting electron system within a triple quantum dot molecule (TQD) where the dots lie in a ring configuration requires one to not only consider electron charge but also spin. Using a Hubbard model supported by microscopic calculations we show that, by localizing a single electron spin in one of the dots, the current through the TQD molecule depends not only on the flux but also on the relative orientation of the spin of the incoming and localized electrons. AB oscillations are predicted only for the spin singlet electron complex resulting in a magnetic field tunable "spin valve".

The Poincare series of divisorial valuations in the plane defines the topology of the set of divisors

To a plane curve singularity one associates a multi-index filtration on the ring of germs of functions of two variables defined by the orders of a function on irreducible components of the curve. The Poincare series of this filtration turnes out to coincide with the Alexander polynomial of the curve germ. For a finite set of divisorial valuations on the ring corresponding to some components of the exceptional divisor of a modification of the plane, in a previous paper there was obtained a formula for the Poincare series of the corresponding multi-index filtration similar to the one associated to plane germs. Here we show that the Poincare series of a set of divisorial valuations on the ring of germs of functions of two variables defines "the topology of the set of the divisors" in the sense that it defines the minimal resolution of this set up to combinatorial equivalence. For the plane curve singularity case, we also give a somewhat simpler proof of the statement by Yamamoto which proves that the Alexander polynomial is equivalent to the embedded topology.

Generating sequences and Poincaré series for a finite set of plane divisorial valuations

Let $V$ be a finite set of divisorial valuations centered at a 2-dimensional regular local ring $R$. In this paper we study its structure by means of the semigroup of values, $S_V$, and the multi-index graded algebra defined by $V$, $\gr_V R$. We prove that $S_V$ is finitely generated and we compute its minimal set of generators following the study of reduced curve singularities. Moreover, we prove a unique decomposition theorem for the elements of the semigroup. The comparison between valuations in $V$, the approximation of a reduced plane curve singularity $C$ by families of sets $V^{(k)}$ of divisorial valuations, and the relationship between the value semigroup of $C$ and the semigroups of the sets $V^{(k)}$, allow us to obtain the (finite) minimal generating sequences for $C$ as well as for $V$. We also analyze the structure of the homogeneous components of $\gr_V R$. The study of their dimensions allows us to relate the Poincaré series for $V$ and for a general curve $C$ of $V$. Since the last series coincides with the Alexander polynomial of the singularity, we can deduce a formula of A'Campo type for the Poincaré series of $V$. Moreover, the Poincaré series of $C$ could be seen as the limit of the series of $V^{(k)}$, $k\ge 0$.

Theory of electronic transport through a triple quantum dot in the presence of magnetic field

Theory of electronic transport through a triangular triple quantum dot subject to a perpendicular magnetic field is developed using a tight binding model. We show that magnetic field allows to engineer degeneracies in the triple quantum dot energy spectrum. The degeneracies lead to zero electronic transmission and sharp dips in the current whenever a pair of degenerate states lies between the chemical potential of the two leads. These dips can occur with a periodicity of one flux quantum if only two levels contribute to the current or with half flux quantum if the three levels of the triple dot contribute. The effect of strong bias voltage and different lead-to-dot connections on Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the conductance is also discussed.

Theory of spin, electronic and transport properties of the lateral triple quantum dot molecule in a magnetic field

We present a theory of spin, electronic and transport properties of a few-electron lateral triangular triple quantum dot molecule in a magnetic field. Our theory is based on a generalization of a Hubbard model and the Linear Combination of Harmonic Orbitals combined with Configuration Interaction method (LCHO-CI) for arbitrary magnetic fields. The few-particle spectra obtained as a function of the magnetic field exhibit Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. As a result, by changing the magnetic field it is possible to engineer the degeneracies of single-particle levels, and thus control the total spin of the many-electron system. For the triple dot with two and four electrons we find oscillations of total spin due to the singlet-triplet transitions occurring periodically in the magnetic field. In the three-electron system we find a transition from a magnetically frustrated to the spin-polarized state. We discuss the impact of these phase transitions on the addition spectrum and the spin blockade of the lateral triple quantum dot molecule.

Universal abelian covers of rational surface singularities and multi-index filtrations

In previous papers, there were computed the Poincare series of some (multi-index) filtrations on the ring of germs of functions on a rational surface singularity. These Poincare series were written as the integer parts of certain fractional power series, an interpretation of whom was not given. Here we show that, up to a simple change of variables, these fractional power series are specializations of the equivariant Poincare series for filtrations on the ring of germs of functions on the universal abelian cover of the surface singularity. We compute these equivariant Poincare series.

Suppression of Zeno effect for distant detectors

We describe the influence of continuous measurement in a decaying system and the role of the distance from the detector to the initial location of the system. The detector is modeled first by a step absorbing potential. For a close and strong detector, the decay rate of the system is reduced; weaker detectors do not modify the exponential decay rate but suppress the long-time deviations above a coupling threshold. Nevertheless, these perturbing effects of measurement disappear by increasing the distance between the initial state and the detector, as well as by improving the efficiency of the detector.

Preparation of atomic velocities by bound-state to resonance conversion

A procedure is proposed to control the average and width of the velocity distribution of ultra-cold atoms. The atoms are set initially in a bound state of an optical trap formed by an inner red detuned laser and an outer blue detuned laser. The bound state is later converted into a resonance by a suitable change of the laser intensities. An optimal time dependence of the switching process, between the sudden and adiabatic limits, adjusts the final translational energies to the Lorentzian shape of the resonance state.

Decay by tunneling of Bosonic and Fermionic Tonks-Girardeau Gases

We study the tunneling dynamics of bosonic and fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gases from a hard wall trap, in which one of the walls is substituted by a delta potential. Using the Fermi-Bose map, the decay of the probability to remain in the trap is studied as a function of both the number of particles and the intensity of the end-cap delta laser. The fermionic gas is shown to be a good candidate to study deviations of the non-exponential decay of the single-particle type, whereas for the bosonic case a novel regime of non-exponential decay appears due to the contributions of different resonances of the trap.
