Josephson Coupling through a Quantum Dot

We derive, via fourth order perturbation theory, an expression for the Josephson current through a gated interacting quantum dot. We analyze our expression for two different models of the superconductor-dot-superconductor (SDS) system. When the matrix elements connecting dot and leads are featureless constants, we compute the Josephson coupling J_c as a function of the gate voltage and Coulomb interaction. In the diffusive dot limit, we compute the probability distribution P(J_c) of Josephson couplings. In both cases, pi junction behavior (J_c < 0) is possible, and is not simply dependent on the parity of the dot occupancy.

Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm for the Double Exchange Model

The Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm is adapted to the simulation of a system of classical degrees of freedom coupled to non self-interacting lattices fermions. The diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix is avoided by introducing a path-integral formulation of the problem, in $d+1$ Euclidean space-time. A perfect action formulation allows to work on the continuum euclidean time, without need for a Trotter-Suzuki extrapolation. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method we study the Double Exchange Model in three dimensions. The complexity of the algorithm grows only as the system volume, allowing to simulate in lattices as large as $16^3$ on a personal computer. We conclude that the second order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition of Double Exchange Materials close to half-filling belongs to the Universality Class of the three-dimensional classical Heisenberg model.

Variational Mean Field approach to the Double Exchange Model

It has been recently shown that the double exchange Hamiltonian, with weak antiferromagnetic interactions, has a richer variety of first and second order transitions than previously anticipated, and that such transitions are consistent with the magnetic properties of manganites. Here we present a thorough discussion of the variational Mean Field approach that leads to the these results. We also show that the effect of the Berry phase turns out to be crucial to produce first order Paramagnetic-Ferromagnetic transitions near half filling with transition temperatures compatible with the experimental situation. The computation relies on two crucial facts: the use of a Mean Field ansatz that retains the complexity of a system of electrons with off-diagonal disorder, not fully taken into account by the Mean Field techniques, and the small but significant antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the localized spins.

Discontinuous transitions in double exchange materials

It is shown that the double exchange Hamiltonian, with weak antiferromagnetic interactions, has a rich variety of first order transitions between phases with different electronic densities and/or magnetizations. For band fillings in the range $0.3 \le x \le 0.5$, and at finite temperatures, a discontinuous transition between phases with similar electronic densities but different magnetizations takes place. This sharp transition, which is not suppressed by electrostatic effects, and survives in the presence of an applied field, is consistent with the phenomenology of the doped manganites near the transition temperature.

Electron-electron interactions in graphene sheets

The effects of the electron-electron interactions in a graphene layer are investigated. It is shown that short range couplings are irrelevant, and scale towards zero at low energies, due to the vanishing of density of states at the Fermi level. Topological disorder enhances the density of states, and can lead to instabilities. In the presence of sufficiently strong repulsive interactions, p-wave superconductivity can emerge.

Partially filled stripes in the two dimensional Hubbard model: statics and dynamics

The internal structure of stripes in the two dimensional Hubbard model is studied by going beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. Partially filled stripes, consistent with experimental observations, are stabilized by quantum fluctuations, included through the Configuration Interaction method. Hopping of short regions of the stripes in the transverse direction is comparable to the bare hopping element. The integrated value of $n_{\bf \vec{k}}$ compares well with experimental results.

Phase Diagram of Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Quantum Wells

The phase diagram of diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum wells is investigated. The interaction between the carriers in the hole gas can lead to first order ferromagnetic transitions, which remain abrupt in applied fields. These transitions can be induced by magnetic fields or, in double-layer systems by electric fields. We make a number of precise experimental predictions for observing these first order phase transitions.

Non-equlibrium effects in transport through quantum dots

The role of non-equilibrium effects in the conductance through quantum dots is investigated. Associated with single-electron tunneling are shake-up processes and the formation of excitonic-like resonances. They change qualitatively the low temperature properties of the system. We analyze by quantum Monte Carlo methods the renormalization of the effective capacitance and the gate-voltage dependent conductance. Experimental relevance is discussed.

Anisotropic Fermi surfaces and Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity in two dimensions

The instabilities induced on a two-dimensional system of correlated electrons by the anisotropies of its Fermi line are analyzed on general grounds. Simple scaling arguments allow to predict the opening of a superconducting gap with a well-defined symmetry prescribed by the geometry of the Fermi line. The same arguments predict a critical dimension of 3/2 for the transition of the two-dimensional system to non-Fermi liquid behavior. The methods are applied to the t-t' Hubbard model in a wide range of dopings.

The magnetism of the t-t' Hubbard model

The magnetic properties of the t-t' Hubbard Model in the two dimensional square lattice are studied within an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation in real space. The interplay between antiferromagnetism, ferromagnetism, phase separation and inhomogeneous magnetic textures is studied. It is shown that, at sufficiently large values of t'/t, a rich fenomenology is to be expected between the antiferromagnetic phase at half filling and the ferromagnetic phase a lower fillings.

Andreev scattering in nanoscopic junctions at high magnetic fields

We report on the measurement of multiple Andreev resonances at atomic size point contacts between two superconducting nanostructures of Pb under magnetic fields higher than the bulk critical field, where superconductivity is restricted to a mesoscopic region near the contact. The small number of conduction channels in this type of contacts permits a quantitative comparison with theory through the whole field range. We discuss in detail the physical properties of our structure, in which the normal bulk electrodes induce a proximity effect into the mesoscopic superconducting part.

Phase separation and enhanced charge-spin coupling near magnetic transitions

The generic changes of the electronic compressibility in systems which show magnetic instabilities is studied. It is shown that, when going into the ordered phase, the compressibility is reduced by an amount comparable to the its original value, making charge instabilities also possible. We discuss, within this framework, the tendency towards phase separation of the double exchange systems, the pyrochlores, and other magnetic materials.

Kinematics of electrons near a Van Hove singularity

A two dimensional electronic system, where the Fermi surface is close to a Van Hove singularity, shows a variety of weak coupling instabilities, and it is a convenient model to study the interplay between antiferromagnetism and anisotropic superconductivity. We present a detailed analysis of the kinematics of the electron scattering in this model. The similitudes, and differences, between a standard Renormalization Group approach and previous work based on parquet summations of log$^2$ divergences are analyzed, with emphasis on the underlying physical processes. General properties of the phase diagram are discussed.

Dynamics of Holes and Universality Class of the Antiferromagnetic Transition in the Two Dimensional Hubbard Model

The dynamics of a single hole (or electron) in the two dimensional Hubbard model is investigated. The antiferromagnetic background is described by a Nèel state, and the hopping of the carrier is analyzed within a configuration interaction approach. Results are in agreement with other methods and with experimental data when available. All data are compatible with the opening of a mean field gap in a Fermi liquid of spin polarons, the so called Slater type of transition. In particular, this hypothesis explains the unusual dispersion relation of the quasiparticle bands near the transition. Recent photoemission data for Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ are analyzed within this context.

Learning, competition and cooperation in simple games

The minority model was introduced to study the competition between agents with limited information. It has the remarkable feature that, as the amount of information available increases, the collective gain made by the agents is reduced. This crowd effect arises from the fact that only a minority can profit at each moment, while all agents make their choices using the same input. We show that the properties of the model change drastically if the agents make choices based on their individual stories, keeping all remaining rules unaltered. This variation reduces the intrinsic frustration of the model, and improves the tendency towards cooperation and self organization. We finally study the stable mixing of individual and collective behavior.

Competition, efficiency and collective behavior in the "El Farol" bar model

The El Farol bar model, proposed to study the dynamics of competition of agents in a variety of contexts (W. B. Arthur, Amer. Econ. Assoc. Pap. and Proc. 84, 406 (1994)) is studied. We characterize in detail the three regions of the phase diagram (efficient, inefficient and better than random) of the simplest version of the model (D. Challet and Y.-C. Zhang, Physica A, 246, 407 (1997)). The efficient region is shown to have a rich structure, which is investigated in some detail. Changes in the payoff function enhance further the tendency of the model towards a wasteful distribution of resources.

Straight cracks in dynamic brittle fracture

We study the dynamics of cracks in brittle materials when the velocity of the crack is comparable to the sound velocity by means of lattice simulations. Inertial and damped dynamics are analyzed. It is shown that dissipation strongly influences the shape of the crack. While inertial cracks are highly unstable, dissipation can stabilize straight cracks. Our results can help to explain recent experiments on PMMA.

A Configuration Interaction approach to hole pairing in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

The interactions between holes in the Hubbard model, in the low density, intermediate to strong coupling limit, are investigated by systematically improving mean field calculations. The Configuration Interaction basis set is constructed by applying to local Unrestricted Hartree-Fock configurations all lattice translations and rotations. It is shown that this technique reproduces, correctly, the properties of the Heisenberg model, in the limit of large U. Upon doping, dressed spin polarons in neighboring sites have an increased kinetic energy and an enhanced hopping rate. Both effects are of the order of the hopping integral and lead to an effective attraction at intermediate couplings.
