Effect of assisted hopping on the formation of local moments in magnetic impurities and quantum dots

Assisted hopping effects in magnetic impurities and quantum dots are analyzed. The magnitude of the assisted hopping term in a quantum dot in the limit of large level spacing is comparable to other corrections induced by the electron-electron interactions. Assisted hopping leads to differences between conductance peaks associated to the same level, and, when the effect is sufficiently strong, to local pairing correlations.

Granular systems in the Coulomb blockade regime

Disordered granular systems, at temperatures where charging effects are important, are studied, by means of an effective medium approximation. The intragrain charging energy leads to insulating behavior at low temperatures, with a well defined Coulomb gap. Non equilibrium effects can give rise to a zero temperature transition between a metallic, gapless phase, and an insulating phase.

Phase diagram and influence of defects in the double perovskites

The phase diagram of the double perovskites of the type Sr_{2-x} La_x Fe Mo O_6 is analyzed, with and without disorder due to antisites. In addition to an homogeneous half metallic ferrimagnetic phase in the absence of doping and disorder, we find antiferromagnetic phases at large dopings, and other ferrimagnetic phases with lower saturation magnetization, in the presence of disorder.

Adaptive learning and coloniality in birds

We introduce here three complementary models to analyze the role of predation pressure in avian coloniality. Different explanations have been proposed for the existence of colonial breeding behavior in birds, but field studies offer no conclusive results. We first propose a learning model in which the decision of birds are taken according to the collective performance. The properties of the system are then studied according to a model in which birds choose according to their individual experience, and the agreement of the introduction of spatial structure with field data are then shown.

Low temperature properties of a quantum particle coupled to dissipative environments

We study the dynamics of a quantum particle coupled to dissipative (ohmic) environments, such as an electron liquid. For some choices of couplings, the properties of the particle can be described in terms of an effective mass. A particular case is the three dimensional dirty electron liquid. In other environments, like the one described by the Caldeira-Leggett model, the effective mass diverges at low temperatures, and quantum effects are strongly suppressed. For interactions within this class, arbitrarily weak potentials lead to localized solutions. Particles bound to external potentials, or moving in closed orbits, can show a first order transition, between strongly and weakly localized regimes.

Electronic susceptibilities in systems with anisotropic Fermi surfaces

The low temperature dependence of the spin and charge susceptibilities of an anisotropic electron system in two dimensions is analyzed. It is shown that the presence of inflection points at the Fermi surface leads, generically, to a $ T \log T $ dependence, and a more singular behavior, $χ\sim T ^{3/4} \log T$, is also possible. Applications to quasi two-dimensional materials are discussed.

Properties of electrons near a Van Hove singularity

The Fermi surface of most hole-doped cuprates is close to a Van Hove singularity at the M point. A two-dimensional electronic system, whose Fermi surface is close to a Van Hove singularity shows a variety of weak coupling instabilities. It is a convenient model to study the interplay between antiferromagnetism and anisotropic superconductivity. The renormalization group approach is reviewed with emphasis on the underlying physical processes. General properties of the phase diagram and possible deformations of the Fermi surface due to the Van Hove proximity are described.

The interplay between double exchange, super-exchange, and Lifshitz localization in doped manganites

Considering the disorder caused in manganites by the substitution of Mn by Fe or Ga, we accomplish a systematic study of doped manganites begun in previous papers. To this end, a disordered model is formulated and solved using the Variational Mean Field technique. The subtle interplay between double exchange, super-exchange, and disorder causes similar effects on the dependence of T_C on the percentage of Mn substitution in the cases considered. Yet, in La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$Mn$_{1-y}$Ga$_y$O$_3$ our results suggest a quantum critical point (QCP) for $y\approx 0.1-0.2$, associated to the localization of the electronic states of the conduction band. In the case of La$_x$Ca$_x$Mn$_{1-y}$Fe$_y$O$_3$ (with $x=1/3,3/8$) no such QCP is expected.

Quantum Chinos Game: winning strategies through quantum fluctuations

We apply several quantization schemes to simple versions of the Chinos game. Classically, for two players with one coin each, there is a symmetric stable strategy that allows each player to win half of the times on average. A partial quantization of the game (semiclassical) allows us to find a winning strategy for the second player, but it is unstable w.r.t. the classical strategy. However, in a fully quantum version of the game we find a winning strategy for the first player that is optimal: the symmetric classical situation is broken at the quantum level.

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of a particle coupled to dissipative environments

The amplitude of the Bohm-Aharonov oscillations of a particle moving around a ring threaded by a magnetic flux and coupled to different dissipative environments is studied. The decay of the oscillations when increasing the radius of the ring is shown to depend on the spatial features of the coupling. When the environment is modelled by the Caldeira-Leggett bath of oscillators, or the particle is coupled by the Coulomb potential to a dirty electron gas, interference effects are suppressed beyond a finite length, even at zero temperature. A finite renormalization of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations is found for other models of the environment.

Proximity effect and strong coupling superconductivity in nanostructures built with an STM

We present high resolution tunneling spectroscopy data at very low temperatures on superconducting nanostructures of lead built with an STM. By applying magnetic fields, superconductivity is restricted to length scales of the order of the coherence length. We measure the tunneling conductance and analyze the phonon structure and the low energy DOS. We demonstrate the influence of the geometry of the system on the magnetic field dependence of the tunneling density of states, which is gapless in a large range of fields. The behavior of the features in the tunneling conductance associated to phonon modes are explained within current models.

First order transition and phase separation in pyrochlores with colossal-magnetoresistance

Tl$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ pyrochlores present colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) around the long range ferromagnetic ordering temperature (T$_{C}$). The character of this magnetic phase transition has been determined to be first order, by purely magnetic methods, in contrast to the second order character previously reported by Zhao et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 219 (1999)). The highest CMR effect, as in Tl$_{1.8}$Cd$_{0.2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$, corresponds to a stronger first order character. This character implies a second type of magnetic interaction, besides the direct superexchange between the Mn$^{4+}$ ions, as well as a phase coexistence. A model is proposed, with a complete Hamiltonian (including superexchange and an indirect interaction), which reproduce the observed phenomenology.

A model for predation pressure in colonial birds

Different explanations have been proposed for the existence of colonial breeding behavior in birds, but field studies offer no conclusive results. We analyze the interplay between learning habits and predation pressure by means of numerical simulations. Our analysis suggests that extremely simple learning processes and equally simplistic models of predation pressure lead to the formation of stable colonies.

Energy radiation of moving cracks

The energy radiated by moving cracks in a discrete background is analyzed. The energy flow through a given surface is expressed in terms of a generalized Poynting vector. The velocity of the crack is determined by the radiation by the crack tip. The radiation becomes more isotropic as the crack velocity approaches the instability threshold.

Exchange instability of the two-dimensional electron gas in semiconductor quantum wells

A two-dimensional (2D) electron gas formed in a modulation-doped GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well undergoes a first-order transition when the first excited subband is occupied with electrons, as the Fermi level is tuned into resonance with the excited subband by applying a dc voltage. Direct evidence for this effect is obtained from low-temperature photoluminescence spectra which display the sudden renormalization of the intersubband energy $E_{01}$ upon the abrupt occupation of the first excited subband. Calculations within density-functional theory, which treat the 2D exchange potential {\it exactly}, show that this thermodynamical instability of the electron system is mainly driven by {\it intersubband} terms of the exchange Coulomb interaction. From temperature-dependent measurements the existence of a critical point at $T_c = 35\pm 5$ K is inferred.

Order in driven vortex lattices in superconducting Nb films with nanostructured pinning potentials

Driven vortex lattices have been studied in a material with strong pinning, such as Nb films. Samples in which natural random pinning coexists with artificial ordered arrays of defects (submicrometric Ni dots) have been fabricated with different geometries (square, triangular and rectangular). Three different dynamic regimes are found: for low vortex velocities, there is a plastic regime in which random defects frustrate the effect of the ordered array; then, for vortex velocities in the range 1-100 m/s, there is a sudden increase in the interaction between the vortex lattice and the ordered dot array, independent on the geometry. This effect is associated to the onset of quasi long range order in the vortex lattice leading to an increase in the overlap between the vortex lattice and the magnetic dots array. Finally, at larger velocities the ordered array-vortex lattice interaction is suppresed again, in agreement with the behavior found in numerical simulations.

Surface effects in multiband superconductors. Application to MgB$_2$

Metals with many bands at the Fermi level can have different band dependent gaps in the superconducting state. The absence of translational symmetry at an interface can induce interband scattering and modify the superconducting properties. We dicuss the relevance of these effects to recent experiments in MgB$_2$.

Monte Carlo determination of the phase diagram of the double-exchange model

We study the phase diagram of the double exchange model, with antiferromagnetic interactions, in a cubic lattice both at zero and at finite temperature. There is a rich variety of magnetic phases, combined with regions where phase separation takes place. We identify phases, intrinsic to the cubic lattice, which are stable for realistic values of the interactions and dopings. Some of these phases break chiral symmetry, leading to unusual features.
