Many body effects on $c$- axis properties: out of plane coherence and bilayer splitting

The out-of-plane hopping in layered metals with strong electronic correlation is analyzed theoretically. By studying the effects of in-plane interactions on the interlayer tunnelling we investigate one of the oldest unresolved problems of high-T$_c$ cuprates, the so-called bilayer splitting. The strong electron-electron interactions within each layer reduce the quasiparticle weight, and modify the hopping between layers. We analyze the effect of the in-plane correlations on the interlayer hopping using a Renormalization Group scheme already applied to the problem of interlayer coherence . The bilayer band splitting acquires a significant temperature and doping dependence, and can be completely suppressed when the Fermi energy coincides with a Van Hove singularity.

Statistics of infections with diversity in the pathogenicity

The statistics of outbreaks in a model for the propagation of meningococcal diseases is analyzed, taking into account the possibility that the population is fragmented into weakly connected patches. It is shown that, depending on the size of of the sample studied, the ratio between the variance and the mean of infected cases can vary from one (Poisson statistics) to the inverse of the infection rate.

Orbital ordering and magnetic structures in $\LMFO$ and $\LWFO$ double perovskites

We analyzed the possible magnetic and orbital orderings of double perovskites, using a simple extension of the double exchange model well suited for these compounds. Orbital ordering is favored by the on site repulsion at the Fe ions. We obtain a rich phase diagram, including ferri- and antiferromagnetic phases, which can, in turn, be metallic or insulating, depending on the existence of orbital order.

Electronic dephasing in wires due to metallic gates

The dephasing effect of metallic gates on electrons moving in one quasi--one--dimensional diffusive wires is analyzed. The incomplete screening in this geometry implies that the effect of the gate can be described, at high energies or temperatures, as an electric field fluctuating in time. The resulting system can be considered a realization of the Caldeira-Leggett model of an environment coupled to many particles. Within the range of temperatures where this approximation is valid, a simple estimation of the inverse dephasing time gives $τ_{\rm G}^{-1} \propto T^{1/2}$.

Superconductivity Driven by Chain Coupling and Electronic Correlations

We present an analysis of a system of weakly coupled Hubbard chains based on combining an exact study of spectral functions of the uncoupled chain system with a renormalization group method for the coupled chains. For low values of the onsite repulsion $U$ and of the doping $δ$, the leading instability is towards a superconducting state. The process includes excited states above a small correlation pseudogap. Similar features appear in extended Hubbard models in the vicinity of commensurate fillings. Our theoretical predictions are consistent with the phase diagram observed in the (TMTTF)$_2$X and (TMTSF)$_2$X series of organic compounds.

Magnetoresistance of itinerant electrons interacting with local spins

Transport properties of itinerant electrons interacting with local spins are analyzed as function of the bandwidth, $W$, the exchange interaction, $J$, and the band filling, $n$, near the band edge. Numerical results have been obtained within the dynamical mean-field approximation and interpreted with the help of analytical treatments. If spatial correlations of the magnetic fluctuations can be neglected, and defining $ρ(m)$ as the magnetization dependent resistivity, we find that $δρ/ ρ(0) \sim n^{-4/3}$ for $J / W, n \ll 1$ (weak coupling, low density limit), $δρ/ ρ(0) \sim constant$, for $J / W \gg 1, n \ll 1$ (double exchange, low density limit), where $δρ= \partial ρ/ \partial m^2 |_{m^2 \to 0}$. Possible limitations from ignoring both localization effects and critical fluctuations are also considered.

Assisted hopping and interaction effects in impurity models

We study, using Numerical Renormalization Group methods, the generalization of the Anderson impurity model where the hopping depends on the filling of the impurity. We show that the model, for sufficiently large values of the assisted hopping term, shows a regime where local pairing correlations are enhanced. These correlations involve pairs fluctuating between on site and nearest neighbor positions.

Entanglement at the boundary of spin chains near a quantum critical point and in systems with boundary critical points

We analyze the entanglement properties of spins (qubits) attached to the boundary of spin chains near quantum critical points, or to dissipative environments, near a boundary critical point, such as Kondo-like systems or the dissipative two level system. In the first case, we show that the properties of the entanglement are significantly different from those for bulk spins. The influence of the proximity to a transition is less marked at the boundary. In the second case, our results indicate that the entanglement changes abruptly at the point where coherent quantum oscillations cease to exist. The phase transition modifies significantly less the entanglement.

Electronic lifetimes in ballistic quantum dots electrostatically coupled to metallic environments

We calculate the lifetime of low-energy electronic excitations in a two-dimensional quantum dot near a metallic gate. We find different behaviors depending on the relative values of the dot size, the dot-gate distance and the Thomas-Fermi screening length within the dot. The standard Fermi liquid behavior is obtained when the dot-gate distance is much shorter than the dot size or when it is so large that intrinsic effects dominate. Departures from the Fermi liquid behavior are found in the unscreened dipole case of small dots far away from the gate, for which a Caldeira-Leggett model is applicable. At intermediate distances, a marginal Fermi liquid is obtained if there is sufficient screening within the dot. In these last two non-trivial cases, the level width decays as a power law with the dot-gate distance.

Assisted hopping in the Anderson impurity model: A flow equation study

We investigate the effect of assisted hopping in the Anderson impurity model. We use the flow equation method, which, by means of unitary transformations, generates a sequence of Hamiltonians in order to eliminate the assisted hopping terms. This approach yields a renormalized on-site energy $ε_d^*$, a renormalized correlation energy $U^*$ and other terms, which include pair hopping. For some parameter values, the initial Hamiltonian flows towards an attractive Anderson model. We argue that this result implies a tendency towards local pairing fluctuations.

Disorder and interaction effects in two dimensional graphene sheets

The interplay between different types of disorder and electron-electron interactions in graphene planes is studied by means of Renormalization Group techniques. The low temperature properties of the system are determined by fixed points where the strength of the interactions remains finite, as in one dimensional Luttinger liquids. These fixed points can be either stable (attractive), when the disorder is associated to topological defects in the lattice or to a random mass term, or unstable (repulsive) when the disorder is induced by impurities outside the graphene planes. In addition, we analyze mid-gap states which can arise near interfaces or vacancies.

Coherence and Coulomb blockade in single electron devices: a unified treatment of interaction effects

We study the interplay between Coulomb blockade and the Kondo effect in quantum dots. We use a self-consistent scheme which describes mesoscopic devices in terms of a collective phase variable (slave rotor) and quasiparticle degrees of freedom. In the strong Coulomb blockade regime, we recover the description of metallic islands in terms of a phase only action. For a dot with well-separated levels, our method leads to the Kondo effect. We identify the regime where a crossover between the Coulomb blockade regime at high temperatures and the formation of a Kondo resonance at lower temperature takes place. In addition, we find that for a dot with many overlapping resonances, an {\it inverse crossover} can take place. A Kondo resonance which involves many levels within the dot is first formed, and this coherent state is suppressed by correlation effects at lower temperatures. A narrower Kondo resonance, due to a single level in the dot can emerge at even lower temperatures.

Quantum electrodynamic fluctuations of the macroscopic Josephson phase

We study the equilibrium dynamics of the relative phase in a superconducting Josephson link taking into account the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic vacuum. The photons act as a superohmic heat bath on the relative Cooper pair number and thus, indirectly, on the macroscopic phase difference ϕ. This leads to an enhancement of the mean square <ϕ^2> that adds to the spread due to the Coulomb interaction carried by the longitudinal electromagnetic field. We also include the interaction with the electronic degrees of freedom due to quasiparticle tunneling, which couple to the phase and only indirectly to the particle number. The simultaneous inclusion of both the radiation field fluctuations and quasiparticle tunneling leads to a novel type of particle--bath Hamiltonian in which the quantum particle couples through its position and momentum to two independent bosonic heat baths. We study the interplay between the two mechanisms in the present context and find interference contributions to the quantum fluctuations of the phase. We explore the observability of the QED effects discussed here.

Influence of external information in the minority game

The influence of a fixed number of agents with the same fixed behavior on the dynamics of the minority game is studied. Alternatively, the system studied can be considered the minority game with a change in the comfort threshold away from half filling. Agents in the frustrated, non ergodic phase tend to overreact to the information provided by the fixed agents, leading not only to large fluctuations, but to deviations of the average occupancies from their optimal values. Agents which discount their impact on the market, or which use individual strategies reach equilibrium states, which, unlike in the absence of the external information provided by the fixed agents, do not give the highest payoff to the collective.

Interlayer hopping properties of electrons in layered metals

A formalism is proposed to study the electron tunneling between extended states, based on the spin-boson Hamiltonian previously used in two-level systems. It is applied to analyze the out--of--plane tunneling in layered metals considering different models. By studying the effects of in--plane interactions on the interlayer tunneling of electrons near the Fermi level, we establish the relation between departure from Fermi liquid behavior driven by electron correlations inside the layer and the out of plane coherence. Response functions, directly comparable with experimental data are obtained.

Single-channel transmission in gold one-atom contacts and chains

We induce superconductivity by proximity effect in thin layers of gold and study the number of conduction channels which contribute to the current in one-atom contacts and atomic wires. The atomic contacts and wires are fabricated with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope. The set of transmission probabilities of the conduction channels is obtained from the analysis of the $I(V)$ characteristic curve which is highly non-linear due to multiple Andreev reflections. In agreement with theoretical calculations we find that there is only one channel which is almost completely open.

Simple model of anisotropic pairing with repulsive interactions

A simple tight binding model with repulsive interactions is studied. The inclusion of more than one orbital per site leads to assisted hopping effects, and, when the orbitals involved have different symmetries, to an anisotropic superconducting phase. Superconductivity exists for all fillings, and for all values of the on site repulsion.
