Effects of the electron spin on the nonlinear generation of quasi-static magnetic fields in a plasma

Through an extended kinetic model, we study the nonlinear generation of quasi-static magnetic fields by high-frequency fields in a plasma, taking into account the effects of the electron spin. It is found that although the largest part of the nonlinear current in a moderate density, moderate temperature plasma is due to the classical terms, the spin may still give a significant contribution to the magnetic field generation mechanism. Applications of our results are discussed.

Temporal dynamics in the one-dimensional quantum Zakharov equations for plasmas

The temporal dynamics of the quantum Zakharov equations (QZEs) in one spatial dimension, which describes the nonlinear interaction of quantum Langmuir waves (QLWs) and quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) is revisited by considering their solution as a superposition of three interacting wave modes in Fourier space. Previous results in the literature are modified and rectified. Periodic, chaotic as well as hyperchaotic behaviors of the Fourier-mode amplitudes are identified by the analysis of Lyapunov exponent spectra and the power spectrum. The periodic route to chaos is explained through an one-parameter bifurcation analysis. The system is shown to be destabilized via a supercritical Hopf-bifurcation. The adiabatic limits of the fully spatio-temporal and reduced systems are compared from the viewpoint of integrability properties.

Connection between the two branches of the quantum two-stream instability across the k space

The stability of two quantum counter-streaming electron beams is investigated within the quantum plasma fluid equations for arbitrarily oriented wave vectors. The analysis reveals that the two quantum two-stream unstable branches are indeed connected by a continuum of unstable modes with oblique wave vectors. Using the longitudinal approximation, the stability domain for any k is analytically explained, together with the growth rate.

Fluid moment hierarchy equations derived from gauge invariant quantum kinetic theory

The gauge invariant electromagnetic Wigner equation is taken as the basis for a fluid-like system describing quantum plasmas, derived from the moments of the gauge invariant Wigner function. The use of the standard, gauge dependent Wigner function is shown to produce inconsistencies, if a direct correspondence principle is applied. The propagation of linear transverse waves is considered and shown to be in agreement with the kinetic theory in the long wavelength approximation, provided an adequate closure is chosen for the macroscopic equations. A general recipe to solve the closure problem is suggested.

Translating oscillatory nonlinear structure in a plasma boundary

By means of a Madelung decomposition, exact periodic traveling solutions are constructed for a modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation derived by Stenflo and Gradov, describing electrostatic surface waves in semi-infinite plasma. The condition for the existence of bi-stable equilibria is discussed. A conservation law as well as the modulational instability admitted by the model are analyzed.

Physical interpretation of the quantum two-stream instability

The unexpected features of the two-stream instability in electrostatic quantum plasmas are interpreted in terms of the coupling of approximate fast and slow waves. This is accomplished thanks to the factorization of the dispersion relation into different sectors carrying positive or negative energy. The concept of negative and positive energy waves, therefore, is useful not only for classical, but for quantum plasmas as well.

Fluid moment hierarchy equations derived from quantum kinetic theory

A set of quantum hydrodynamic equations are derived from the moments of the electrostatic mean-field Wigner kinetic equation. No assumptions are made on the particular local equilibrium or on the statistical ensemble wave functions. Quantum diffraction effects appear explicitly only in the transport equation for the heat flux triad, which is the third-order moment of the Wigner pseudo-distribution. The general linear dispersion relation is derived, from which a quantum modified Bohm-Gross relation is recovered in the long wave-length limit. Nonlinear, traveling wave solutions are numerically found in the one-dimensional case. The results shed light on the relation between quantum kinetic theory, the Bohm-de Broglie-Madelung eikonal approach, and quantum fluid transport around given equilibrium distribution functions.

Nonlinear structures: explosive, soliton and shock in a quantum electron-positron-ion magnetoplasma

Theoretical and numerical studies are performed for the nonlinear structures (explosive, solitons and shock) in quantum electron-positron-ion magnetoplasmas. For this purpose, the reductive perturbation method is employed to the quantum hydrodynamical equations and the Poisson equation, obtaining extended quantum Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. The latter has been solved using the generalized expansion method to obtain a set of analytical solutions, which reflect the possibility of the propagation of various nonlinear structures. The relevance of the present investigation to the white dwarfs is highlighted.

Gamma-ray spectroscopy of $^{38}_{17}$Cl using grazing reactions

Excited states of $^{38}_{17}$Cl$_{21}$ were populated in grazing reactions during the interaction of a beam of $^{36}_{16}$S$_{20}$ ions of energy 215 MeV with a $^{208}_{82}$Pb$_{126}$ target. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the CLARA $γ$-ray detector array was used to identify the reaction fragments and to detect their decay via $γ$-ray emission. A level scheme for $^{38}$Cl is presented with tentative spin and parity assignments. The level scheme is discussed within the context of the systematics of neighboring nuclei and is compared with the results of state-of-the-art shell model calculations.

Collins and Sivers asymmetries for pions and kaons in muon-deuteron DIS

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions.

Phase-space structures in quantum-plasma wave turbulence

The quasilinear theory of the Wigner-Poisson system in one spatial dimension is examined. Conservation laws and properties of the stationary solutions are determined. Quantum effects are shown to manifest themselves in transient periodic oscillations of the averaged Wigner function in velocity space. The quantum quasilinear theory is checked against numerical simulations of the bump-on-tail and the two-stream instabilities. The predicted wavelength of the oscillations in velocity space agrees well with the numerical results.

Nonlinear stationary solutions of the Wigner and Wigner-Poisson equations

Exact nonlinear stationary solutions of the one-dimensional Wigner and Wigner-Poisson equations in the terms of the Wigner functions that depend not only on the energy but also on position are presented. In this way, the Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal modes of the classical plasma are adapted for the quantum formalism in the phase space. The solutions are constructed for the case of a quartic oscillator potential, as well as for the self-consistent Wigner-Poisson case. Conditions for well-behaved physically meaningful equilibrium Wigner functions are discussed.

Automatizing the application of Mellin-Barnes representations for Feynman integrals

Feynman diagrams may be evaluated by Mellin-Barnes representations of their Feynman parameter integrals in d=4-2\eps dimensions. Recently, the Mathematica toolkit AMBRE has been developed for the automatic derivation of such representations with a loop-by-loop approach. We describe the package and exemplify its use with the \eps-expansion of the massive one-loop QED vertex function.

Nonlinear structure in a current-carrying collisional dusty plasma

A perpendicular ion drift is investigated as a mechanism for the generation of magnetic field structures in a highly collisional dusty plasma. The basic dissipation mechanism is assumed to be the dust-neutrals momentum exchange, so that plasmas with a small ionization fraction are natural candidates for experiments. The model reduces to a nonlinear partial differential equation for the vector potential. The conditions for linear instability are determined. The stationary states are periodic arrangements for the magnetic field, described by a Lienard equation. The fully depleted (ion-dust) case is also considered in detail. Applications to planetary rings, comets and dust acoustic instability experiments are analyzed. A necessary condition for the validity of the model is a sufficiently slow time-scale of the generated magnetic fields.

Nonlinear Saturation of the Weibel Instability in a Dense Fermi Plasma

We present an investigation for the generation of intense magnetic fields in dense plasmas with an anisotropic electron Fermi-Dirac distribution. For this purpose, we use a new linear dispersion relation for transverse waves in the Wigner-Maxwell dense quantum plasma system. Numerical analysis of the dispersion relation reveals the scaling of the growth rate as a function of the Fermi energy and the temperature anisotropy. The nonlinear saturation level of the magnetic fields is found through fully kinetic simulations, which indicates that the final amplitudes of the magnetic fields are proportional to the linear growth rate of the instability. The present results are important for understanding the origin of intense magnetic fields in dense Fermionic plasmas, such as those in the next generation intense laser-solid density plasma experiments.

Multinucleon transfer reactions in closed-shell nuclei

Multinucleon transfer reactions in 40Ca+96Zr and 90Zr+208Pb have been measured at energies close to the Coulomb barrier in a high resolution gamma-particle coincidence experiment. The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the CLARA gamma-array has been employed. Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of transfer products. Mass and charge yields, total kinetic energy losses, gamma transitions of the binary reaction partners, and comparison of data with semiclassical calculations are reported. Specific transitions in 95Zr populated in one particle transfer channels are discussed in terms of particle-phonon couplings. The gamma decays from states in 42Ca in the excitation energy region expected from pairing vibrations are also observed.

Variational approach for the quantum Zakharov system

The quantum Zakharov system is described in terms of a Lagrangian formalism. A time-dependent Gaussian trial function approach for the envelope electric field and the low-frequency part of the density fluctuation leads to a coupled, nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. In the semiclassic case, linear stability analysis of this dynamical system shows a destabilizing rôle played by quantum effects. Arbitrary value of the quantum effects are also considered, yielding the ultimate destruction of the localized, Gaussian trial solution. Numerical simulations are shown both for the semiclassic and the full quantum cases.

Harris sheet solution for magnetized quantum plasmas

We construct an infinite family of one-dimensional equilibrium solutions for purely magnetized quantum plasmas described by the quantum hydrodynamic model. The equilibria depends on the solution of a third-order ordinary differential equation, which is written in terms of two free functions. One of these free functions is associated to the magnetic field configuration, while the other is specified by an equation of state. The case of a Harris sheet type magnetic field, together with an isothermal distribution, is treated in detail. In contrast to the classical Harris sheet solution, the quantum case exhibits an oscillatory pattern for the density.
