On the linearization of the generalized Ermakov systems

A linearization procedure is proposed for Ermakov systems with frequency depending on dynamic variables. The procedure applies to a wide class of generalized Ermakov systems which are linearizable in a manner similar to that applicable to usual Ermakov systems. The Kepler--Ermakov systems belong into this category but others, more generic, systems are also included.

Lie symmetries for two-dimensional charged particle motion

We find the Lie point symmetries for non-relativistic two-dimensional charged particle motion. These symmetries comprise a quasi-invariance transformation, a time-dependent rotation, a time-dependent spatial translation and a dilation. The associated electromagnetic fields satisfy a system of first-order linear partial differential equations. This system is solved exactly, yielding four classes of electromagnetic fields compatible with Lie point symmetries.

Frobenius theorem and invariants for Hamiltonian systems

We apply Frobenius integrability theorem in the search of invariants for one-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with a time-dependent potential. We obtain several classes of potential functions for which Frobenius theorem assures the existence of a two-dimensional foliation to which the motion is constrained. In particular, we derive a new infinite class of potentials for which the motion is assurately restricted to a two-dimensional foliation. In some cases, Frobenius theorem allows the explicit construction of an associated invariant. It is proven the inverse result that, if an invariant is known, then it always can be furnished by Frobenius theorem.

Generalized Hamiltonian structures for Ermakov systems

We construct Poisson structures for Ermakov systems, using the Ermakov invariant as the Hamiltonian. Two classes of Poisson structures are obtained, one of them degenerate, in which case we derive the Casimir functions. In some situations, the existence of Casimir functions can give rise to superintegrable Ermakov systems. Finally, we characterize the cases where linearization of the equations of motion is possible.

Anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates and completely integrable dynamical systems

A Gaussian ansatz for the wave function of two-dimensional harmonically trapped anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates is shown to lead, via a variational procedure, to a coupled system of two second-order, nonlinear ordinary differential equations. This dynamical system is shown to be in the general class of Ermakov systems. Complete integrability of the resulting Ermakov system is proven. Using the exact solution, collapse of the condensate is analyzed in detail. Time-dependence of the trapping potential is allowed.

Nyquist method for Wigner-Poisson quantum plasmas

By means of the Nyquist method, we investigate the linear stability of electrostatic waves in homogeneous equilibria of quantum plasmas described by the Wigner-Poisson system. We show that, unlike the classical Vlasov-Poisson system, the Wigner-Poisson case does not necessarily possess a Penrose functional determining its linear stability properties. The Nyquist method is then applied to a two-stream distribution, for which we obtain an exact, necessary and sufficient condition for linear stability, as well as to a bump-in-tail equilibrium.

Noether symmetries for two-dimensional charged particle motion

We find the Noether point symmetries for non-relativistic two-dimensional charged particle motion. These symmetries are composed of a quasi-invariance transformation, a time-dependent rotation and a time-dependent spatial translation. The associated electromagnetic field satisfy a system of first-order linear partial differential equations. This system is solved exactly, yielding three classes of electromagnetic fields compatible with Noether point symmetries. The corresponding Noether invariants are derived and interpreted.

Highly deformed $^{40}$Ca configurations in $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C

The possible occurrence of highly deformed configurations in the $^{40}$Ca di-nuclear system formed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C reaction is investigated by analyzing the spectra of emitted light charged particles. Both inclusive and exclusive measurements of the heavy fragments (A $\geq$ 10) and their associated light charged particles (protons and $α$ particles) have been made at the IReS Strasbourg {\sc VIVITRON} Tandem facility at bombarding energies of $E_{lab} (^{28}$Si) = 112 MeV and 180 MeV by using the {\sc ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The energy spectra, velocity distributions, and both in-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations of light charged particles are compared to statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. The analysis suggests the onset of large nuclear deformation in $^{40}$Ca at high spin.

A multistream model for quantum plasmas

The dynamics of a quantum plasma can be described self-consistently by the nonlinear Schroedinger-Poisson system. Here, we consider a multistream model representing a statistical mixture of N pure states, each described by a wavefunction. The one-stream and two-stream cases are investigated. We derive the dispersion relation for the two-stream instability and show that a new, purely quantum, branch appears. Numerical simulations of the complete Schroedinger-Poisson system confirm the linear analysis, and provide further results in the strongly nonlinear regime. The stationary states of the Schroedinger-Poisson system are also investigated. These can be viewed as the quantum mechanical counterpart of the classical Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal modes, and are described by a set of coupled nonlinear differential equations for the electrostatic potential and the stream amplitudes.

Self-consistent fluid model for a quantum electron gas

It is shown that, for a large class of statistical mixtures, the Wigner-Poisson (or Hartree) system can be reduced to an effective Schroedinger-Poisson system, in which the Schroedinger equation contains a new nonlinearity. For the case of a zero-temperature one-dimensional electron gas, this additional nonlinearity is of the form Psi^4. In the long wavelength limit, the results obtained from the effective Schroedinger-Poisson system are in agreement with those of the Wigner-Poisson system. The reduced model is further used to describe the stationary states of a quantum electron gas and the two-stream instability.

Elastic $α$-transfer in the elastic scattering of $^{\bf 16}$O$+^{\bf 12}$C

The elastic scattering $^{16}$O$+^{12}$C angular distributions at $^{16}$O bombarding energies of 100.0, 115.9 and 124.0 MeV and their optical model description including the $α$-particle exchange contribution calculated in the Coupled Reaction Channel approach are presented. The angular distributions show not only the usual diffraction pattern but also, at larger angles, intermediate structure of refractive origin on which finer oscillations are superimposed. The large angle features can be consistently described including explicitly the elastic $α$-transfer process and using a refractive optical potential with a deep real part and a weakly absorptive imaginary part.

8Be cluster emission versus alpha evaporation in 28Si + 12C

The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations in the $^{40}$Ca di-nuclear system formed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C reaction is investigated by analyzing the spectra of emitted light charged particles. Both inclusive and exclusive measurements of the heavy fragments (A $\geq$ 10) and their associated light charged particles (protons and $α$ particles) have been made at the IReS Strasbourg {\sc VIVITRON} Tandem facility at bombarding energies of $E_{lab}$ ($^{28}$Si) = 112 MeV and 180 MeV by using the {\sc ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The energy spectra, velocity distributions, in-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations of light charged particles are compared to statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. This spin dependence approach suggests the onset of large nuclear deformation in $^{40}$Ca at high spin. This conclusion might be connected with the recent observation of superdeformed bands in the $^{40}$Ca nucleus. The analysis of $α$ particles in coincidence with $^{32}$S fragments suggests a surprisingly strong $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.

Refractive elastic scattering of carbon and oxygen nuclei: The mean field analysis and Airy structures

The experimental data on the $^{16}$O$+^{12}$C and $^{18}$O$+^{12}$C elastic scatterings and their optical model analysis are presented. Detailed and complete elastic angular distributions have been measured at the Strasbourg Vivitron accelerator at several energies covering the energy range between 5 and 10 MeV per nucleon. The elastic scattering angular distributions show the usual diffraction pattern and also, at larger angles, refractive effects in the form of nuclear rainbow and associated Airy structures. The optical model analysis unambiguously shows the evolution of the refractive scattering pattern. The observed structure, namely the Airy minima, can be consistently described by a nucleus-nucleus potential with a deep real part and a weakly absorptive imaginary part. The difference in absorption in the two systems is explained by an increased imaginary (mostly surface) part of the potential in the $^{18}$O$+^{12}$C system. The relation between the obtained potentials and those reported for the symmetrical $^{16}$O$+^{16}$O and $^{12}$C$+^{12}$C systems is drawn.

Deformation effects in the $^{28}$Si+$^{12}$C and $^{28}$Si+$^{28}$Si reaction Search

The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations is investigated in the $^{40}$Ca and $^{56}$Ni di-nuclear systems as formed in the $^{28}$Si+$^{12}$C,$^{28}$Si reactions by using the properties of emitted light charged particles. Inclusive as well as exclusive data of the heavy fragments and their associated light charged particles have been collected by using the {\sc ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The data are analysed by Monte Carlo CASCADE statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. Significant deformation effects at high spin are observed as well as an unexpected large $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.

Search for emission of unstable $^8$Be clusters from hot $^40$Ca and $^56$Ni nuclei

The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations is investigated in the $^{40}$Ca and $^{56}$Ni di-nuclear systems as formed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C and $^{28}$Si + $^{28}$Si reactions, respectively, by using the properties of emitted light charged particles. Inclusive as well as exclusive data of the heavy fragments (A $\geq$ 6) and their associated light charged particles (p, d, t, and $α$-particles) have been collected at the IReS Strasbourg VIVITRON Tandem facility with two bombarding energies $E_{lab}(^{28}$Si) = 112 and 180 MeV by using the ICARE charged particle multidetector array, which consists of nearly 40 telescopes. The measured energy spectra, velocity distributions, in-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations are analysed by Monte Carlo CASCADE statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. Although significant deformation effects at high spin are needed, the remaining disagreement observed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C reaction for the S evaporation residue suggests an unexpected large unstable $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.

$^{35}$Cl+$^{12}$C Asymmetrical fission excitation functions

The fully energy-damped yields from the $^{35}$Cl+$^{12}$C reaction have been systematically investigated using particle-particle coincidence techniques at a $^{35}$Cl bombarding energy of $\sim$ 8 MeV/nucleon. The fragment-fragment correlation data show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process with rather large numbers of secondary light-charged particles emitted from the two excited exit fragments. No evidence is observed for ternary break-up events. The binary-process results of the present measurement, along with those of earlier, inclusive experimental data obtained at several lower bombarding energies are compared with predictions of two different kinds of statistical model calculations. These calculations are performed using the transition-state formalism and the Extended Hauser-Feshbach method and are based on the available phase space at the saddle point and scission point of the compound nucleus, respectively. The methods give comparable predictions and are both in good agreement with the experimental results thus confirming the fusion-fission origin of the fully-damped yields. The similarity of the predictions for the two models supports the claim that the scission point configuration is very close to that of the saddle point for the light $^{47}$V mass-asymmetry-dependent fission barriers needed in the transition-state calculation.
