Monte Carlo simulations for the ANTARES underwater neutrino telescope

Monte Carlo simulations are a unique tool to check the response of a detector and to monitor its performance. For a deep-sea neutrino telescope, the variability of the environmental conditions that can affect the behaviour of the data acquisition system must be considered, in addition to a reliable description of the active parts of the detector and of the features of physics events, in order to produce a realistic set of simulated events. In this paper, the software tools used to produce neutrino and cosmic ray signatures in the telescope and the strategy developed to represent the time evolution of the natural environment and of the detector efficiency are described.

The long-lived Type IIn SN 2015da: Infrared echoes and strong interaction within an extended massive shell

In this paper we report the results of the first $\sim$four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the Type IIn supernova SN 2015da (also known as PSN J13522411+3941286, or iPTF16tu). The supernova exploded in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5337 in a relatively highly extinguished environment. The transient showed prominent narrow Balmer lines in emission at all times and a slow rise to maximum in all bands. In addition, early observations performed by amateur astronomers give a very well-constrained explosion epoch. The observables are consistent with continuous interaction between the supernova ejecta and a dense and extended H-rich circumstellar medium. The presence of such an extended and dense medium is difficult to reconcile with standard stellar evolution models, since the metallicity at the position of SN 2015da seems to be slightly subsolar. Interaction is likely the mechanism powering the light curve, as confirmed by the analysis of the pseudo bolometric light curve, which gives a total radiated energy $\gtrsim10^{51}\,\rm{erg}$. Modeling the light curve in the context of a supernova shock breakout through a dense circumstellar medium allowed us to infer the mass of the prexisting gas to be $\simeq8\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, with an extreme mass-loss rate for the progenitor star $\simeq0.6\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,\rm{yr^{-1}}$, suggesting that most of the circumstellar gas was produced during multiple eruptive events. Near- and mid-infrared observations reveal a flux excess in these domains, similar to those observed in SN 2010jl and other interacting transients, likely due to preexisting radiatively heated dust surrounding the supernova. By modeling the infrared excess, we infer a mass $\gtrsim0.4\times10^{-3}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$ for the dust.

Nucleon resonances in $γp \to ωp$ reaction

The most recent high-precision data on spin observables $Σ$, $T$, $P'$, $E$, $F$ and $H$ reported by the CLAS Collaboration together with the previous data on differential cross sections and spin-density-matrix elements reported by the CLAS, A2, GRAAL, SAPHIR and CBELSA/TAPS Collaborations for the reaction $γp \to ωp$ are analyzed within an effective Lagrangian approach. The reaction amplitude is constructed by considering the $t$-channel $π$ and $η$ exchanges, the $s$-channel nucleon and nucleon resonances exchanges, the $u$-channel nucleon exchange and the generalized contact current. The latter accounts effectively for the interaction current and ensures that the full photoproduction amplitude is gauge invariant. It is shown that all the available CLAS data can be satisfactorily described by considering the $N(1520)3/2^-$, $N(1700)3/2^-$, $N(1720)3/2^+$, $N(1860)5/2^+$, $N(1875)3/2^-$, $N(1895)1/2^-$ and $N(2060)5/2^-$ resonances in the $s$-channel. The parameters of these resonances are extracted and compared with those quoted by PDG.

The Control Unit of the KM3NeT Data Acquisition System

The KM3NeT Collaboration runs a multi-site neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Water Cherenkov particle detectors, deep in the sea and far off the coasts of France and Italy, are already taking data while incremental construction progresses. Data Acquisition Control software is operating off-shore detectors as well as testing and qualification stations for their components. The software, named Control Unit, is highly modular. It can undergo upgrades and reconfiguration with the acquisition running. Interplay with the central database of the Collaboration is obtained in a way that allows for data taking even if Internet links fail. In order to simplify the management of computing resources in the long term, and to cope with possible hardware failures of one or more computers, the KM3NeT Control Unit software features a custom dynamic resource provisioning and failover technology, which is especially important for ensuring continuity in case of rare transient events in multi-messenger astronomy. The software architecture relies on ubiquitous tools and broadly adopted technologies and has been successfully tested on several operating systems.

First Measurements of the Double-Polarization Observables $F$, $P$, and $H$ in $ω$ Photoproduction off Transversely Polarized Protons in the $N^\ast$ Resonance Region

First measurements of double-polarization observables in $ω$ photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry $F$ has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries $H$ and $P$ have been measured using linearly polarized tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon ($N^\ast$) resonances. In particular, contributions from new $N^\ast$ resonances listed in the Review of Particle Properties are observed, which aid in reaching the goal of mapping out the nucleon resonance spectrum.

Photometric and Spectroscopic Properties of Type Ia Supernova 2018oh with Early Excess Emission from the $Kepler$ 2 Observations

Supernova (SN) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt) is the first spectroscopically-confirmed type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observed in the $Kepler$ field. The $Kepler$ data revealed an excess emission in its early light curve, allowing to place interesting constraints on its progenitor system (Dimitriadis et al. 2018, Shappee et al. 2018b). Here, we present extensive optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry, as well as dense sampling of optical spectra, for this object. SN 2018oh is relatively normal in its photometric evolution, with a rise time of 18.3$\pm$0.3 days and $Δ$m$_{15}(B)=0.96\pm$0.03 mag, but it seems to have bluer $B - V$ colors. We construct the "uvoir" bolometric light curve having peak luminosity as 1.49$\times$10$^{43}$erg s$^{-1}$, from which we derive a nickel mass as 0.55$\pm$0.04M$_{\odot}$ by fitting radiation diffusion models powered by centrally located $^{56}$Ni. Note that the moment when nickel-powered luminosity starts to emerge is +3.85 days after the first light in the Kepler data, suggesting other origins of the early-time emission, e.g., mixing of $^{56}$Ni to outer layers of the ejecta or interaction between the ejecta and nearby circumstellar material or a non-degenerate companion star. The spectral evolution of SN 2018oh is similar to that of a normal SN Ia, but is characterized by prominent and persistent carbon absorption features. The C II features can be detected from the early phases to about 3 weeks after the maximum light, representing the latest detection of carbon ever recorded in a SN Ia. This indicates that a considerable amount of unburned carbon exists in the ejecta of SN 2018oh and may mix into deeper layers.

Effects of $Δ(1905)5/2^+$ on $K^*Σ$ photoproduction

The two-channel photoproductions of $γp \to K^{*+} Σ^{0}$ and $γp \to K^{*0} Σ^{+}$ are investigated based on an effective Lagrangian approach at the tree-level Born approximation. In addition to the $t$-channel $K$, $κ$, $K^*$ exchanges, the $s$-channel nucleon ($N$) and $Δ$ exchanges, the $u$-channel $Λ$, $Σ$, $Σ^*$ exchanges, and the generalized contact term, we try to take into account the minimum number of baryon resonances in constructing the reaction amplitudes to describe the experimental data. It is found that by including the $Δ(1905)5/2^+$ resonance with its mass, width, and helicity amplitudes taken from the Review of Particle Physics [Particle Data Group, C. Patrignani {\it et al.}, Chin. Phys. C {\bf 40}, 100001 (2016)], the calculated differential and total cross sections for these two reactions are in good agreement with the experimental data. An analysis of the reaction mechanisms shows that the cross sections of $γp \to K^{*+}Σ^{0}$ are dominated by the $s$-channel $Δ(1905)5/2^+$ exchange at low energies and $t$-channel $K^*$ exchange at high energies, with the $s$-channel $Δ$ exchange providing significant contributions in the near-threshold region. For $γp \to K^{*0}Σ^{+}$, the angular dependences are dominated by the $t$-channel $K$ exchange at forward angles and the $u$-channel $Σ^*$ exchange at backward angles, with the $s$-channel $Δ$ and $Δ(1905)5/2^+$ exchanges making considerable contributions at low energies. Predictions are given for the beam, target, and recoil asymmetries for both reactions.

Nucleon-nucleon interaction in a chiral SU(3) quark model revisited

A dynamical investigation of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction by using the resonating group method (RGM) in a chiral SU(3) quark model has been revisited. The considered quark-quark interaction includes, besides the one-gluon exchange (OGE) and the phenomenological confinement potential, the nonet scalar and pseudoscalar meson exchanges derived from the spontaneous SU(3) chiral symmetry breaking. The physical consistency requirement that the wave functions of single baryons satisfy the minimums of the Hamiltonian has been strictly imposed in determination of the model parameters. The calculated masses of the octet and decuplet baryon ground states, the binding energy of the deuteron, and the NN scattering phase shifts up to a total angular momentum J=6 are in satisfactory agreement with the experiments.

SN 2016coi/ASASSN-16fp: An example of residual helium in a type Ic supernova?

The optical observations of Ic-4 supernova (SN) 2016coi/ASASSN-16fp, from $\sim 2$ to $\sim450$ days after explosion, are presented along with analysis of its physical properties. The SN shows the broad lines associated with SNe Ic-3/4 but with a key difference. The early spectra display a strong absorption feature at $\sim 5400$ Å which is not seen in other SNe~Ic-3/4 at this epoch. This feature has been attributed to He I in the literature. Spectral modelling of the SN in the early photospheric phase suggests the presence of residual He in a C/O dominated shell. However, the behaviour of the He I lines are unusual when compared with He-rich SNe, showing relatively low velocities and weakening rather than strengthening over time. The SN is found to rise to peak $\sim 16$ d after core-collapse reaching a bolometric luminosity of Lp $\sim 3\times10^{42}$ \ergs. Spectral models, including the nebular epoch, show that the SN ejected $2.5-4$ \msun\ of material, with $\sim 1.5$ \msun\ below 5000 \kms, and with a kinetic energy of $(4.5-7)\times10^{51}$ erg. The explosion synthesised $\sim 0.14$ \msun\ of 56Ni. There are significant uncertainties in E(B-V)host and the distance however, which will affect Lp and MNi. SN 2016coi exploded in a host similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and away from star-forming regions. The properties of the SN and the host-galaxy suggest that the progenitor had $M_\mathrm{ZAMS}$ of $23-28$ \msun\ and was stripped almost entirely down to its C/O core at explosion.

SN 2016X: A Type II-P Supernova with A Signature of Shock Breakout from Explosion of A Massive Red Supergiant

We present extensive ultraviolet (UV) and optical photometry, as well as dense optical spectroscopy for type II Plateau (IIP) supernova SN 2016X that exploded in the nearby ($\sim$ 15 Mpc) spiral galaxy UGC 08041. The observations span the period from 2 to 180 days after the explosion; in particular, the Swift UV data probably captured the signature of shock breakout associated with the explosion of SN 2016X. It shows very strong UV emission during the first week after explosion, with contribution of $\sim$ 20 -- 30% to the bolometric luminosity (versus $\lesssim$ 15% for normal SNe IIP). Moreover, we found that this supernova has an unusually long rise time of about 12.6 $\pm$ 0.5 days in the $R$ band (versus $\sim$ 7.0 days for typical SNe IIP). The optical light curves and spectral evolution are quite similar to the fast-declining type IIP object SN 2013ej, except that SN 2016X has a relatively brighter tail. Based on the evolution of photospheric temperature as inferred from the $Swift$ data in the early phase, we derive that the progenitor of SN 2016X has a radius of about 930 $\pm$ 70 R$_{\odot}$. This large-size star is expected to be a red supergiant star with an initial mass of $\gtrsim$ 19 -- 20 M$_{\odot}$ based on the mass $--$ radius relation of the Galactic red supergiants, and it represents one of the most largest and massive progenitors found for SNe IIP.

Nucleon resonances in $γp \to K^{*+} Λ$

The high-precision cross-section data for the reaction $γp \to K^{*+}Λ$ reported by the CLAS Collaboration at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility have been analyzed based on an effective Lagrangian approach in the tree-level approximation. Apart from the $t$-channel $K$, $κ$, $K^*$ exchanges, the $s$-channel nucleon ($N$) exchange, the $u$-channel $Λ$, $Σ$, $Σ^*(1385)$ exchanges, and the generalized contact term, the contributions from the near-threshold nucleon resonances in the $s$-channel are also taken into account in constructing the reaction amplitude. It is found that, to achieve a satisfactory description of the differential cross section data, at least two nucleon resonances should be included. By including the $N(2060){5/2}^-$ resonance, which is responsible for the shape of the angular distribution near the $K^*Λ$ threshold, and one of the $N(2000){5/2}^+$, $N(2040){3/2}^+$, $N(2100){1/2}^+$, $N(2120){3/2}^-$ and $N(2190){7/2}^-$ resonances, one can describe the cross-section data quite well, with the fitted resonance masses and widths compatible with those advocated by the Particle Data Group. The resulted predictions of the beam, target, and recoil asymmetries are found to be quite different from various fits, indicating the necessity of the spin observable data for $γp \to K^{*+}Λ$ to further pin down the resonance contents and associated parameters in this reaction.

Alice-Bob Physics: Coherent Solutions of Nonlocal KdV Systems

In natural and social science, many events happened at different space-times may be closely correlated. Two events, $A$ (Alice) and $B$ (Bob) are defined correlated if one event is determined by another, say, $B=\hat{f}A$ for suitable $\hat{f}$ operators. Taking KdV and coupled KdV systems as examples, we can find some types of models (AB-KdV systems) to exhibit the existence on the correlated solutions linked with two events. The idea of this report is valid not only for physical problems related to KdV systems but also for problems described by arbitrary continuous or discrete models. The parity and time reversal symmetries are extended to shifted parity and delayed time reversal. The new symmetries are found to be useful not only to establish AB-systems but also to find group invariant solutions of numerous AB-systems. A new elegant form of the $N$-soliton solutions of the KdV equation and then the AB-KdV systems is obtained. A concrete AB-KdV system derived from the nonlinear inviscid dissipative and barotropic vorticity equation in a $β$-plane channel is applied to the two correlated monople blocking events which is responsible for the snow disaster in the winter of 2007/2008 happened in Southern China.

Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of about 0.9 m^2 and 0.6 m^2 at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering <180 eV spectral resolution; the Large Area Detector (LAD) - a deployable set of 640 Silicon Drift Detectors, for a total effective area of about 3.4 m^2, between 6 and 10 keV, and spectral resolution <250 eV; the Polarimetry Focusing Array (PFA) - a set of 2 X-ray telescope, for a total effective area of 250 cm^2 at 2 keV, equipped with imaging gas pixel photoelectric polarimeters; the Wide Field Monitor (WFM) - a set of 3 coded mask wide field units, equipped with position-sensitive Silicon Drift Detectors, each covering a 90 degrees x 90 degrees FoV. The eXTP international consortium includes mostly major institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities in China, as well as major institutions in several European countries and the United States. The predecessor of eXTP, the XTP mission concept, has been selected and funded as one of the so-called background missions in the Strategic Priority Space Science Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2011. The strong European participation has significantly enhanced the scientific capabilities of eXTP. The planned launch date of the mission is earlier than 2025.

Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium - IX. SN 2014av, and characterization of Type Ibn SNe

We present spectroscopic and photometric data of the Type Ibn supernova (SN) 2014av, discovered by the Xingming Observatory Sky Survey. Stringent pre-discovery detection limits indicate that the object was detected for the first time about 4 days after the explosion. A prompt follow-up campaign arranged by amateur astronomers allowed us to monitor the rising phase (lasting 10.6 days) and to accurately estimate the epoch of the maximum light, on 2014 April 23 (JD = 2456771.1 +/- 1.2). The absolute magnitude of the SN at the maximum light is M(R) = -19.76 +/- 0.16. The post-peak light curve shows an initial fast decline lasting about 3 weeks, and is followed by a slower decline in all bands until the end of the monitoring campaign. The spectra are initially characterized by a hot continuum. Later on, the temperature declines and a number of lines become prominent mostly in emission. In particular, later spectra are dominated by strong and narrow emission features of He I typical of Type Ibn supernovae (SNe), although there is a clear signature of lines from heavier elements (in particular O I, Mg II and Ca II). A forest of relatively narrow Fe II lines is also detected showing P-Cygni profiles, with the absorption component blue-shifted by about 1200 km/s. Another spectral feature often observed in interacting SNe, a strong blue pseudo-continuum, is seen in our latest spectra of SN 2014av. We discuss in this paper the physical parameters of SN 2014av in the context of the Type Ibn supernova variety.

Understanding the structure of $d^*(2380)$ in chiral quark model

The structure and decay properties of $d^*$ have been detailedly investigated in both the chiral SU(3) quark model and the extended chiral SU(3) quark model that describe the energies of baryon ground states and the nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering data satisfactorily. By performing a dynamical coupled-channels study of the system of $ΔΔ$ and hidden-color channel (CC) with quantum numbers $I(J^P)=0(3^+)$ in the framework of the resonating group method (RGM), we find that the $d^*$ has a mass of about $2.38-2.42$ GeV and a root-mean-square radius (RMS) of about $0.76-0.88$ fm. The channel wave function is extracted by a projection of the RGM wave function onto the physical basis, and the fraction of CC component in the $d^*$ is found to be about $66\%-68\%$, which indicates that the $d^*$ is a hexaquark-dominated exotic state. Based on this scenario the partial decay widths of $d^*\to d π^0 π^0$ and $d^*\to d π^+π^-$ are further explicitly evaluated and the total width is then obtained by use of the branching ratios extracted from the measured cross sections of other possible decay channels. Both the mass and the decay width of $d^*$ calculated in this work are compatible with the data ($M\approx 2380$ MeV, $Γ\approx 70$ MeV) reported by WASA-at-COSY Collaboration.

Photocouplings at the Pole from Pion Photoproduction

The reactions $γp\toπ^0 p$ and $γp\toπ^+ n$ are analyzed in a semi-phenomenological approach up to $E\sim2.3$ GeV. Fits to differential cross section and single and double polarization observables are performed. A good overall reproduction of the available photoproduction data is achieved. The Jülich2012 dynamical coupled-channel model -which describes elastic $πN$ scattering and the world data base of the reactions $πN\toηN$, $KΛ$, and $KΣ$ at the same time - is employed as the hadronic interaction in the final state. The framework guarantees analyticity and, thus, allows for a reliable extraction of resonance parameters in terms of poles and residues. In particular, the photocouplings at the pole can be extracted and are presented.

Is $d^*$ a candidate of hexaquark-dominated exotic state?

We confirm our previous prediction of a $d^*$ state with $I(J^P)=0(3^+)$ [Phys. Rev. C 60, 045203 (1999)] and report for the first time based on a microscopic calculation that $d^*$ is a hexaquark dominated exotic state as it has about 2/3 hidden color (CC) configurations. By performing a more elaborate dynamical coupled-channels investigation of the $ΔΔ$-CC system within the framework of resonating group method (RGM) in a chiral quark model, we found that the $d^*$ state has a mass of about 2.38-2.42 GeV, a root-mean-square radius (RMS) of 0.76-0.88 fm, and a CC fraction of 66%-68%. The last ensures that the $d^*$ has a rather narrow width which, together with the quantum numbers and our calculated mass, is consistent with the newly observed resonance-like structure ($M\approx 2380$ MeV, $Γ\approx 70$ MeV) in double-pionic fusion reactions reported by WASA-at-COSY Collaboration.

Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium. IV. Transitional Type Ibn Supernovae

We present ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared data of the Type Ibn supernovae (SNe) 2010al and 2011hw. SN 2010al reaches an absolute magnitude at peak of M(R) = -18.86 +- 0.21. Its early light curve shows similarities with normal SNe Ib, with a rise to maximum slower than most SNe Ibn. The spectra are dominated by a blue continuum at early stages, with narrow P-Cygni He I lines indicating the presence of a slow-moving, He-rich circumstellar medium. At later epochs the spectra well match those of the prototypical SN Ibn 2006jc, although the broader lines suggest that a significant amount of He was still present in the stellar envelope at the time of the explosion. SN 2011hw is somewhat different. It was discovered after the first maximum, but the light curve shows a double-peak. The absolute magnitude at discovery is similar to that of the second peak (M(R) = -18.59 +- 0.25), and slightly fainter than the average of SNe Ibn. Though the spectra of SN 2011hw are similar to those of SN 2006jc, coronal lines and narrow Balmer lines are cleary detected. This indicates substantial interaction of the SN ejecta with He-rich, but not H-free, circumstellar material. The spectra of SN 2011hw suggest that it is a transitional SN Ibn/IIn event similar to SN 2005la. While for SN 2010al the spectro-photometric evolution favours a H-deprived Wolf-Rayet progenitor (of WN-type), we agree with the conclusion of Smith et al. (2012) that the precursor of SN 2011hw was likely in transition from a luminous blue variable to an early Wolf-Rayet (Ofpe/WN9) stage.
