Sigma_c Dbar and Lambda_c Dbar states in a chiral quark model

The S-wave Sigma_c Dbar and Lambda_c Dbar states with isospin I=1/2 and spin S=1/2 are dynamically investigated within the framework of a chiral constituent quark model by solving a resonating group method (RGM) equation. The results show that the interaction between Sigma_c and Dbar is attractive, which consequently results in a Sigma_c Dbar bound state with the binding energy of about 5-42 MeV, unlike the case of Lambda_c Dbar state, which has a repulsive interaction and thus is unbound. The channel coupling effect of Sigma_c Dbar and Lambda_c Dbar is found to be negligible due to the fact that the gap between the Sigma_c Dbar and Lambda_c Dbar thresholds is relatively large and the Sigma_c Dbar and Lambda_c Dbar transition interaction is weak.

Combined analysis of eta' production reactions: gamma N -> eta' N, N N -> N N eta', and pi N -> eta' N

The production of eta' mesons in photon- and hadron-induced reactions has been revisited in view of the recent additions of high-precision data to the world data base. Based on an effective Lagrangian approach, we have performed a combined analysis of the free and quasi-free gamma N -> eta' N, N N -> N N eta', and pi N -> eta' N reactions. Considering spin-1/2 and -3/2 resonances, we found that a set of above-threshold resonances {S_{11}, P_{11}, P_{13}}, with fitted mass values of about M_R=1925, 2130, and 2050 MeV, respectively, and the four-star sub-threshold P_{13}(1720) resonance reproduce best all existing data for the eta' production processes in the resonance-energy region considered in this work. All three above-threshold resonances found in the present analysis are essential and indispensable for the good quality of the present fits.

Coupled-channel dynamics in the reactions piN --> piN, etaN, KLambda, KSigma

Elastic piN scattering and the world data of the family of reactions pi^- p --> eta n, K^0 Lambda$, K^0 Sigma^0, K^+ Sigma^-, and pi^+ p --> K^+ Sigma^+ are described simultaneously in an analytic, unitary, coupled-channel approach. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate both the t- and the u- channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. Partial-wave amplitudes are determined and the resonance content is extracted from the analytic continuation, including resonance positions and branching ratios, and possible sources of uncertainties are discussed. The results provide the final-state interactions for the ongoing analysis of photo- and electroproduction data.

Learning High-Dimensional Mixtures of Graphical Models

We consider unsupervised estimation of mixtures of discrete graphical models, where the class variable corresponding to the mixture components is hidden and each mixture component over the observed variables can have a potentially different Markov graph structure and parameters. We propose a novel approach for estimating the mixture components, and our output is a tree-mixture model which serves as a good approximation to the underlying graphical model mixture. Our method is efficient when the union graph, which is the union of the Markov graphs of the mixture components, has sparse vertex separators between any pair of observed variables. This includes tree mixtures and mixtures of bounded degree graphs. For such models, we prove that our method correctly recovers the union graph structure and the tree structures corresponding to maximum-likelihood tree approximations of the mixture components. The sample and computational complexities of our method scale as $\poly(p, r)$, for an $r$-component mixture of $p$-variate graphical models. We further extend our results to the case when the union graph has sparse local separators between any pair of observed variables, such as mixtures of locally tree-like graphs, and the mixture components are in the regime of correlation decay.

Pion photoproduction in a dynamical coupled-channels model

The charged and neutral pion photoproduction reactions are investigated in a dynamical coupled-channels approach based on the formulation of Haberzettl, Huang, and Nakayama [Phys. Rev. C 83, 065502 (2011)]. The hadronic final-state interaction is provided by the Juelich pi-N model, which includes the channels pi-N and eta-N comprising stable hadrons as well as the effective pi-pi-N channels pi-Delta, sigma-N, and rho-N. This hadronic model has been quite successful in describing pi-N to pi-N scattering for center-of-mass energies up to 1.9 GeV. By construction, the full pion photoproduction current satisfies the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity and thus is gauge invariant as a matter of course. The calculated differential cross sections and photon spin asymmetries up to 1.65 GeV center-of-mass energy for the reactions gamma p to pi+ n, gamma p to pi0 p, gamma n to pi- p and gamma n to pi0 n are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Dynamical coupled-channels model study of pion photoproduction

The photoproduction of pion off nucleon is investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels approach based on the Juelich pi-N model, which has been quite successful in the description of pi-N to pi-N scattering for center-of-mass energies up to 1.9 GeV. The full pion photoproduction amplitude is constructed to satisfy the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity and hence, it is fully gauge invariant. The calculated differential cross sections and photon spin asymmetries up to 1.65 GeV center-of-mass energy for the reactions gamma p to pi^+ n, gamma p to pi^0 p and gamma n to pi^- p are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Dressing the electromagnetic nucleon current

A field-theory-based approach to pion photoproduction off the nucleon is used to derive a microscopically consistent formulation of the fully dressed electromagnetic nucleon current in an effective Lagrangian formalism. It is shown how the rigorous implementation of local gauge invariance at all levels of the reaction dynamics provides equations that lend themselves to practically manageable truncations of the underlying nonlinearities of the problem. The requirement of consistency also suggests a novel way of treating the pion photoproduction problem. Guided by a phenomenological implementation of gauge invariance for the truncated equations that has proved successful for pion photoproduction, an expression for the fully dressed nucleon current is given that satisfies the Ward-Takahashi identity for a fully dressed nucleon propagator as a matter of course. Possible applications include meson photo- and electroproduction processes, bremsstrahlung, Compton scattering, and $ee'$ processes off nucleons.

The reaction pi+ p --> K+ Sigma+ in a unitary coupled-channels model

Elastic pi N scattering and the reaction pi+ p --> K+ Sigma+ are described simultaneously in a unitary coupled-channels approach which respects analyticity. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate the t- and u-channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. The pole structure of the amplitudes is extracted from the analytic continuation.

Photoproduction of $η'$-mesons off the deuteron

Quasi-free photoproduction of $η'$ mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The $η'$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first data for the $γn \rightarrow nη'$ reaction. In addition, also first estimates for coherent $η'$-production off the deuteron have been obtained. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. The data are compared to model calculations taking into account contributions from nucleon resonances and $t$-channel exchanges.

A model-independent analysis of p + p --> pp(1S0) + gamma

The pp hard bremsstrahlung reaction, p + p --> pp(1S0) + gamma, in which the two protons in the final state are in the 1S0 state, is investigated theoretically. Here, the most general spin structure of the NN hard bremsstrahlung reaction, consistent with symmetry principles, is derived from a partial-wave expansion of this amplitude. Based on this spin structure, it is shown that there are only four independent spin matrix elements in this reaction, which is a direct consequence of reflection symmetry in the reaction plane. It is also shown that it requires at least eight independent observables to determine them uniquely. The present method provides the coefficients multiplying each spin operator in terms of the partial-wave or, equivalently, multipole amplitudes. Some observables are expressed explicitly in terms of these multipoles and a partial-wave analysis is performed. The results should be useful in the analyses of the experimental data on the p + p --> pp(1S0) + gamma reaction being taken, in particular, at the COSY accelerator facility, as well as in providing some theoretical guidance to the future experiments in this area.

Backward pion-nucleon scattering

A global analysis of the world data on differential cross sections and polarization asymmetries of backward pion-nucleon scattering for invariant collision energies above 3 GeV is performed in a Regge model. Including the $N_α$, $N_γ$, $Δ_δ$ and $Δ_β$ trajectories, we reproduce both angular distributions and polarization data for small values of the Mandelstam variable $u$, in contrast to previous analyses. The model amplitude is used to obtain evidence for baryon resonances with mass below 3 GeV. Our analysis suggests a $G_{39}$ resonance with a mass of 2.83 GeV as member of the $Δ_β$ trajectory from the corresponding Chew-Frautschi plot.

The role of the background in the extraction of resonance contributions from meson-baryon scattering

The separation of background and resonance contributions in pion-nucleon scattering is an often discussed issue. We investigate to what extent the background can be separated from the pole contribution. For illustration we use results from an analytic model for the meson-baryon interaction derived from meson exchange. We focus on the two distinct cases of an elastic and a highly inelastic resonance, namely the Delta(1232) and the Delta*(1700). Our results are also relevant for studies of dynamically generated resonances and attempts to extract bare quantities from hadronic models to be compared to quark model results.

Analytic properties of the scattering amplitude and resonances parameters in a meson exchange model

The analytic properties of scattering amplitudes provide important information. Besides the cuts, the poles and zeros on the different Riemann sheets determine the global behavior of the amplitude on the physical axis. Pole positions and residues allow for a parameterization of resonances in a well-defined way, free of assumptions for the background and energy dependence of the resonance part. This is a necessary condition to relate resonance contributions in different reactions. In the present study, we determine the pole structure of pion-nucleon scattering in an analytic model based on meson exchange. For this, the sheet structure of the amplitude is determined. To show the precision of the resonance extraction and discuss phenomena such as resonance interference, we discuss the S11 amplitude in greater detail.

Backward pion photoproduction

We present a systematic analysis of backward pion photoproduction for the reactions gamma p -> pi0 p and gamma p -> pi+ n. Regge phenomenology is applied at invariant collision energies above 3 GeV in order to fix the reaction amplitude. A comparision with older data on pi0- and pi+ photoproduction at theta = 180 degrees indicates that the high-energy limit as given by the Regge calculation could be reached possibly at energies of around sqrt{s} = 3 GeV. In the energy region of sqrt{s} < 2.5 GeV, covered by the new measurements of gamma p -> pi0 p differential cross sections at large angles at ELSA, JLab, and LEPS, we see no clear signal for a convergence towards the Regge results. The baryon trajectories obtained in our analysis are in good agreement with those given by the spectrum of excited baryons.

The pair potential of colloidal stars

We report on the construction of colloidal stars: 1 micrometer polystyrene beads grafted with a dense brush of 1 micrometer long and 10 nm wide semi-flexible filamentous viruses. The pair interaction potentials of colloidal stars are measured using an experimental implementation of umbrella sampling, a technique originally developed in computer simulations in order to probe rare events. The influence of ionic strength and grafting density on the interaction is measured. Good agreements are found between the measured interactions and theoretical predictions based upon the osmotic pressure of counterions.

Monopole blocking governed by a modified KdV type equation

A type of coupled variable coefficient modified Korteweg-de Vries system is derived from a two-layered fluid system. It is known that the formation, maintenance, and collapse of an atmospheric blocking are always related with large-scale weather or shorts term climate anomalies. One special analytical solution of the obtained system successfully features the evolution cycle of an atmospheric monopole type blocking event. In particular, our theoretical results captures a real monopole type blocking case happened during 19 Feb 2008 to 26 Feb 2008 can be well described by our analytical solution.

Phase behavior and rheology of sticky rod-like particles

We construct colloidal ``sticky'' rods from the semi-flexible filamentous fd virus and temperature-sensitive polymers poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The phase diagram of fd-PNIPAM system becomes independent of ionic strength at high salt concentration and low temperature, i.e. the rods are sterically stabilized by the polymer. However, the network of sticky rods undergoes a sol-gel transition as the temperature is raised. The viscoelastic moduli of fd and fd-PNIPAM suspensions are compared as a function of temperature, and the effect of ionic strength on the gelling behavior of fd-PNIPAM solution is measured. For all fluidlike and solidlike samples, the frequency-dependant linear viscoelastic moduli can be scaled onto universal master curves.
