Magnetic relaxation and magnetization field dependence measurements in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3

We reported a systematic change in the average magnetic relaxation rate, after the application and removal of a 5 T magnetic field, in a polycrystalline sample of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3. Magnetic relaxation measurements and magnetization versus field curves were taken from 10 K to 160 K. The long time behavior of the relaxation curves was approximately logarithmic in all cases. Unusual magnetic relaxation behavior in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3

We present an extensive study of the time dependence of the magnetization in a polycrystalline and low temperature charge ordered La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 sample. After application and removal of a 5 T magnetic field, a systematic variation of the magnetic relaxation rate from 10 K to 245 K was found. At 195 K, the magnetization decreases in a very short time and after that it increases slowly as a function of time. Moreover, between 200 and 245 K, an increase in magnetization, above the corresponding value just after removing the 5 T magnetic field, was measured. This unusual behavior was tested in several other relaxation procedures. PACS: 70, 74.25 Ha, 75.60.-d, 76.60.Es

Meissner - London state in superconductors of rectangular cross-section in perpendicular magnetic field

The distribution of magnetic induction in Meissner state with finite London penetration depth is analyzed for platelet samples of rectangular cross-section in a perpendicular magnetic field. The exact 2D numerical solution of the London equation is extended analytically to the realistic 3D case. Data obtained on Nb cylinders and foils as well as single crystals of YBCO and BSCCO are in a good agreement with the model. The results are particularly relevant for magnetic susceptibility, rf and microwave resonator measurements of the magnetic penetration depth in high-Tc superconductors.

Magnetic remanence of Josephson junction arrays

In this work we study the magnetic remanence exhibited by Josephson junction arrays in response to an excitation with an AC magnetic field. The effect, predicted by numerical simulations to occur in a range of temperatures, is clearly seen in our tridimensional disordered arrays. We also discuss the influence of the critical current distribution on the temperature interval within which the array develops a magnetic remanence. This effect can be used to determine the critical current distribution of an array.

Reentrant AC magnetic susceptibility in Josephson-junction arrays: An alternative explanation for the paramagnetic Meissner effect

The paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) measured in high $T_{C}$ granular superconductors has been attributed to the presence of $π$-junctions between the grains. Here we present measurements of complex AC magnetic susceptibility from two-dimensional arrays of conventional (non $π$) Nb/Al/AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions. We measured the susceptibility as a function of the temperature $T$, the AC amplitude of the excitation field, $h_{AC}$, and the external magnetic field, $H_{DC}$. The experiments show a strong paramagnetic contribution from the multi-junction loops, which manifests itself as a reentrant screening at low temperature, for values of $h_{AC}$ higher than 50 mOe. A highly simplified model, based on a single loop containing four junction, accounts for this paramagnetic contribution and the range of parameters in which it appears. This model offers an alternative explanation of PME which does not involve $π$-junctions.

Meissner state in finite superconducting cylinders with uniform applied magnetic field

We study the magnetic response of superconductors in the presence of low values of a uniform applied magnetic field. We report measurements of DC magnetization and AC magnetic susceptibility performed on niobium cylinders of different length-to-radius ratios, which show a dramatic enhance of the initial magnetization for thin samples, due to the demagnetizing effects. The experimental results are analyzed by applying a model that calculates the magnetic response of the superconductor, taking into account the effects of the demagnetizing fields. We use the results of magnetization and current and field distributions of perfectly diamagnetic cylinders to discuss the physics of the demagnetizing effects in the Meissner state of type-II superconductors.

Superconductivity in sintered-polycristalline PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

Superconductivity in thin films and powders, and in single crystals of Pr-123 has been found by Blackstead et al. and Zou et al., respectively. Nevertheless, up to now it has never been reported in sintered-policrystalline samples. We have prepared high-quality samples of this material by following a sol-gel method. We characterized the structure of all samples by using XRD and SEM-EDS techniques. Magnetic characterization was performed by measuring the magnetization as a function of the temperature T, and the applied magnetic field H. Measurements were taken in the ranges 2 K <T < 400 K and 0 <H< 5 Tesla. In this work we report by the first time superconductivity in Pr-123 sintered-polycristalline samples, with $T{_c}$ around 90 K, and $H{_c1}$ around 870 Oe.
