Periodic Chaotic Billiards: Quantum-Classical Correspondence in Energy Space

We investigate the properties of eigenstates and local density of states (LDOS) for a periodic 2D rippled billiard, focusing on their quantum-classical correspondence in energy representation. To construct the classical counterparts of LDOS and the structure of eigenstates (SES), the effects of the boundary are first incorporated (via a canonical transformation) into an effective potential, rendering the one-particle motion in the 2D rippled billiard equivalent to that of two-interacting particles in 1D geometry. We show that classical counterparts of SES and LDOS in the case of strong chaotic motion reveal quite a good correspondence with the quantum quantities. We also show that the main features of the SES and LDOS can be explained in terms of the underlying classical dynamics, in particular of certain periodic orbits. On the other hand, statistical properties of eigenstates and LDOS turn out to be different from those prescribed by random matrix theory. We discuss the quantum effects responsible for the non-ergodic character of the eigenstates and individual LDOS that seem to be generic for this type of billiards with a large number of transverse channels.

Delocalization border and onset of chaos in a model of quantum computation

We study the properties of spectra and eigenfunctions for a chain of $1/2- $spins (qubits) in an external time-dependent magnetic field, and under the conditions of non-selective excitation (when the amplitude of the magnetic field is large). This model is known as a possible candidate for experimental realization of quantum computation. We present the theory for finding delocalization transition and show that for the interaction between nearest qubits, the transition is very different from that to quantum chaos. We explain this phenomena by showing that in the considered region of parameters our model is close to an integrable one. According to a general opinion, the threshold for the onset of quantum chaos due to the interqubit interaction decreases with an increase of the number of qubits. Contrary to this expectation, for a magnetic field with constant gradient we have found that chaos border does not depend on the number of qubits. We give analytical estimates which explain this effect, together with numerical data supporting our analysis. Random models with long-range interactions are studied as well. In particular, we show that in this case the delocalization and quantum chaos borders coincide.

Entropy production and wave packet dynamics in the Fock space of closed chaotic many-body systems

Highly excited many-particle states in quantum systems such as nuclei, atoms, quantum dots, spin systems, quantum computers etc., can be considered as ``chaotic'' superpositions of mean-field basis states (Slater determinants, products of spin or qubit states). This is due to a very high level density of many-body states that are easily mixed by a residual interaction between particles (quasi-particles). For such systems, we have derived simple analytical expressions for the time dependence of energy width of wave packets, as well as for the entropy, number of principal basis components and inverse participation ratio, and tested them in numerical experiments. It is shown that the energy width $Δ(t)$ increases linearly and very quickly saturates. The entropy of a system increases quadratically, $S(t) \sim t^2$ at small times, and after, can grow linearly, $S(t) \sim t$, before the saturation. Correspondingly, the number of principal components determined by the entropy, $N_{pc} \sim exp{(S(t))}$, or by the inverse participation ratio, increases exponentially fast before the saturation. These results are explained in terms of a cascade model which describes the flow of excitation in the Fock space of basis components. Finally, a striking phenomenon of damped oscillations in the Fock space at the transition to an equilibrium is discussed.

Unconventional decay law for excited states in closed many-body systems

We study the time evolution of an initially excited many-body state in a finite system of interacting Fermi-particles in the situation when the interaction gives rise to the ``chaotic'' structure of compound states. This situation is generic for highly excited many-particle states in quantum systems, such as heavy nuclei, complex atoms, quantum dots, spin systems, and quantum computers. For a strong interaction the leading term for the return probability $W(t)$ has the form $W(t)\simeq \exp (-Δ_E^2t^2)$ with $Δ_E^2$ as the variance of the strength function. The conventional exponential linear dependence $W(t)=C\exp (-Γt)$ formally arises for a very large time. However, the prefactor $C$ turns out to be exponentially large, thus resulting in a strong difference from the conventional estimate for $W(t)$.

Avoiding Quantum Chaos in Quantum Computation

We study a one-dimensional chain of nuclear $1/2-$spins in an external time-dependent magnetic field. This model is considered as a possible candidate for experimental realization of quantum computation. According to the general theory of interacting particles, one of the most dangerous effects is quantum chaos which can destroy the stability of quantum operations. According to the standard viewpoint, the threshold for the onset of quantum chaos due to an interaction between spins (qubits) strongly decreases with an increase of the number of qubits. Contrary to this opinion, we show that the presence of a magnetic field gradient helps to avoid quantum chaos which turns out to disappear with an increase of the number of qubits. We give analytical estimates which explain this effect, together with numerical data supporting

Quantum-Classical Correspondence for Isolated Systems of Interacting Particles: Localization and Ergodicity in Energy Space

Generic properties of the strength function (local density of states (LDOS)) and chaotic eigenstates are analyzed for isolated systems of interacting particles. Both random matrix models and dynamical systems are considered in the unique approach. Specific attention is paid to the quantum-classical correspondence for the form of the LDOS and eigenstates, and to the localization in the energy shell. New effect of the non-ergodicity of individual eigenstates in a deep semiclassical limit is briefly discussed.

Mobility Edge in Aperiodic Kronig-Penney Potentials with Correlated Disorder: Perturbative Approach

It is shown that a non-periodic Kronig-Penney model exhibits mobility edges if the positions of the scatterers are correlated at long distances. An analytical expression for the energy-dependent localization length is derived for weak disorder in terms of the real-space correlators defining the structural disorder in these systems. We also present an algorithm to construct a non-periodic but correlated sequence exhibiting desired mobility edges. This result could be used to construct window filters in electronic, acoustic, or photonic non-periodic structures.

Single-Pulse Preparation of the Uniform Superpositional State used in Quantum Algorithms

We examine a single-pulse preparation of the uniform superpositional wave function, which includes all basis states, in a spin quantum computer. The effective energy spectrum and the errors generated by this pulse are studied in detail. We show that, in spite of the finite width of the energy spectrum bands, amplitude and phase errors can be made reasonably small.

Anderson localization as a parametric instability of the linear kicked oscillator

We rigorously analyse the correspondence between the one-dimensional standard Anderson model and a related classical system, the `kicked oscillator' with noisy frequency. We show that the Anderson localization corresponds to a parametric instability of the oscillator, with the localization length determined by an increment of the exponential growth of the energy. Analytical expression for a weak disorder is obtained, which is valid both inside the energy band and at the band edge.

Localization and Mobility Edge in One-Dimensional Potentials with Correlated Disorder

We show that a mobility edge exists in 1D random potentials provided specific long-range correlations. Our approach is based on the relation between binary correlator of a site potential and the localization length. We give the algorithm to construct numerically potentials with mobility edge at any given energy inside allowed zone. Another natural way to generate such potentials is to use chaotic trajectories of non-linear maps. Our numerical calculations for few particular potentials demonstrate the presence of mobility edges in 1D geometry.

Quantum Chaos and Thermalization for Interacting Particles

In this review the problem of statistical description of isolated quantum systems of interacting particles is discussed. Main attention is paid to a recently developed approach which is based on chaotic properties of compound states in the basis of non-interacting particles. In order to demonstrate the most important aspects of this approach, the matrix model of two-body random interaction between Fermi-particles has been used. Different problems have been considered such as the onset of chaos and statistical equilibrium, the relation between the structure of eigenstates and distribution of occupation numbers, the emergence of the Fermi-Dirac distribution in isolated systems of finite number of particles and many others. The application of the approach to dynamical systems with the classical limit is discussed as well.

Classical statistical mechanics of a few-body interacting spin model

We study the emergence of Boltzmann's law for the "single particle energy distribution" in a closed system of interacting classical spins. It is shown that for a large number of particles Boltzmann's law may occur, even if the interaction is very strong. Specific attention is paid to classical analogs of the average shape of quantum eigenstates and "local density of states", which are very important in quantum chaology. Analytical predictions are then compared with numerical data.

Experimental observation of the mobility edge in a waveguide with correlated disorder

The tight-binding model with correlated disorder introduced by Izrailev and Krokhin [PRL 82, 4062 (1999)] has been extended to the Kronig-Penney model. The results of the calculations have been compared with microwave transmission spectra through a single-mode waveguide with inserted correlated scatterers. All predicted bands and mobility edges have been found in the experiment, thus demonstrating that any wanted combination of transparent and non-transparent frequency intervals can be realized experimentally by introducing appropriate correlations between scatterers.

One-dimensional tight-binding models with correlated diagonal and off-diagonal disorder

We study localization properties of electronic states in one-dimensional lattices with nearest-neighbour interaction. Both the site energies and the hopping amplitudes are supposed to be of arbitrary form. A few cases are considered in details. We discuss first the case in which both the diagonal potential and the fluctuating part of the hopping amplitudes are small. In this case we derive a general analytical expression for the localization length, which depends on the pair correlators of the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements. The second case we investigate is that of strong uncorrelated disorder, for which approximate analytical estimates are given and compared with numerical data. Finally, we study the model with short-range correlations which constitutes an extension with off-diagonal disorder of the random dimer model.

Excited Eigenstates and Strength Functions for Isolated Systems of Interacting Particles

Eigenstates in finite systems such as nuclei, atoms, atomic clusters and quantum dots with few excited particles are chaotic superpositions of shell model basis states. We study criterion for the equilibrium distribution of basis components (ergodicity, or Quantum Chaos), effects of level density variation and transition from the Breit-Wigner to the Gaussian shape of eigenstates and strength functions. In the model of $n$ interacting particles distributed over $m$ orbitals, the shape is given by the Breit-Wigner function with the width in the form of gaussian dependence on energy.
